The Sunshine sisters from Dial M for Mischief are back in this second installment of a three-book series. Jessica Sunshine can be downright deadly. That's the lesson learned by homicide detective Matt Denby when he teams up with the youngest Sunshine sister to solve the murder of her father. Original.
Kasey Michaels is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 books (she doesn't count them). Kasey has received three coveted Starred Reviews from Publishers Weekly, two for the historical romances, THE SECRETS OF THE HEART and THE BUTLER DID IT, and a third for contemporary romance LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (that shows diversity, you see). She is a recipient of the RITA, a Waldenbooks and Bookrak Bestseller award, and many awards from Romantic Times magazine, including a Career Achievement award for her Regency era historical romances. She is an Honor Roll author in Romance Writers of America, Inc. (RWA)
Kasey has appeared on the TODAY show, and was the subject of a Lifetime Cable TV show "A Better Way," in conjunction with Good Housekeeping magazine, a program devoted to women and how they have achieved career success in the midst of motherhood (short version: "with great difficulty").
A highly praised nonfiction book, written as Kathryn Seidick, "...OR YOU CAN LET HIM GO," details the story of Kasey and her family during the time of her eldest son's first kidney transplant.
Kasey has written Regency romances, Regency historicals, category books including novellas and continuities and a few series "launch" books, and single title contemporaries. She has coped with time travel, ghosts, trilogies, the dark side, the very light side, and just about everything in between. Hers is also the twisted mind behind her ongoing Maggie Kelly mystery series starring a former romance writer turned historical mystery writer whose gorgeous hunk of a fictional hero shows up, live and in color, in her Manhattan living room – to melt her knees, to help her solve murders, and to leave the top off her toothpaste. And, says Kasey, she's just getting started!
My, my my. If you could only see the snarky grin on my face! I just finished "Mischief becomes her" by Kasey Michaels and it was a blast to read. I've been a fan of Michaels' stories for several years now, both contemporary and historical, so when I picked up the first 'Mischief' contemporary book and realized it had a connection to her 'Ainsley Beckett' historical series, I was psyched. This second book in the 'Mischief' series continues with tantalizing hints of an upcoming book that will cement the tie between the two series while providing a sexy contemporary reunion story. Now who can resist that? Not me.
Jessica is the second Sunshine daughter's story even though she's the baby. The first book "dial M for Mischief' was about Jolie Sunshine the movie star who ends up reunited with her first love after her father's death. Now Jessica takes main stage and she falls for an older cop, Matt, who isn't quite sure how their relationship got started, much less where it goes from here. There's a ton of great repartee and witty bantering back and forth between these two, so if you're looking for a 'hearts and flowers' romance, pass this one by.
The heat factor is fairly high without being explicit, but I'd still restrict reading for an adult or mature older teen. The mystery is intricate and even though you get a good feel for the 'bad guy' halfway through, the mystery that's solved isn't the one involving him (yet) so there are still surprises and plenty of sleuthing to do.
This series is very much a romantic mystery with tons of humor and I'm salivating for the next book "Mischief 24/7" which should be out April 2009. Until then, I'll nestle "Mischief becomes her" on my Kasey Michaels shelf and try to wait patiently.
Two cases solved and 2 to go! I hope this series ends with some shockers... but it is good to know where it is leading. I am looking forward to the dynamics of the next one. This story here was good... their major issue was an age difference. But they had good chemistry. The dislike from the first novel is quickly dealt with.
The three books are definitely meant to be read together and in order. They refer to each other often, and we really see how the three sisters work together to solve these crimes. Their significant others are also on the scene. I like that the three books make one whole, and that we continue to learn more about the characters that star in the other books. The sisters have an interesting dynamic, which their significant others try to figure into.
So in this book we see Jessica and Matt not only look into the strangler case, but also digging up more clues about the other two, and possibly connecting two of their cases together? They manage to solve the Fishtown Strangler case and stumble upon a major clue for the Dumpster Baby case. They also manage to overcome their differences and give into love.
I didn't like Jessica in the first book, and I still wasn't crazy about her in this book, either. She grew on me as the book went on. However, it was Matt and all of the unsolved cases that kept me reading and really wishing I had the third book to dive right into.
This was a really cute story, but it felt like it wrapped up in a hurry. Too quickly for my liking. Jessica and Matt go from solving the Fishtown Strangler case, to him moving out, to them getting officially together all within what feels like two or three chapters. With most of the book leading up to this, it seemed like a rushed ending. We don't even get to see the follow-through of Matt's proposal at the end. That being said, I still did very much enjoy the story. Jessica and Matt get their HEA with no cliffhanger. This book can be read as a stand-alone if desired, but the first book in the series, Dial M for Mischief, is also very enjoyable and I would recommend it. I am excited to hear Jade's story in Mischief 24/7. Hopefully it includes a little bit more closure on Jessica and Matt's story as well.

I had to read a book with the cover as my favorite color. This had it but that was it. Not really an ending in this book. I have never read this author and thought it would be a quick read. The main characters are three sisters. There father was accused of murder and then committing suicide. They are out to avenge his death. They take on his cold cases from his PI business. They are solving cases sort of, but in the end the main case that they are working the whole book on for 367 does not get finished.
I enjoyed reading this book; however, I was disappointed that it didn't have the all the sisters together. I also feel like the ending was rushed. Then the page and boom another case solved. I would give this book 31/2 stars.
It's well-articulated with some good personality. Still, it's not her finest work. The story lost me several times, the heroine annoys me, and several times I caught myself either skimming or getting annoyed by passages that seemed more as an advertisement for her other books than anything relevant to the story
I am a fan of Kasey Michaels. I read the first book in this series and liked it well enough to find this second book.
There are three Sunshine sisters – there is Jade, she was working with their late father as a private investigator. Jolie is a movie star. Jessica is is a TV reporter who loves doing ambush interviews for her cable show.
This book focuses on Jessica.
The 3 sisters are trying to prove their father did not commit suicide nor did he murder a woman. He was a respected former policeman who was a straight shooter and would never have done the things which are being said of him.
He was working on a few cases when he died and the girls believe if they can solve those cases, they will understand what really happened to their father.
I would recommend that before you read this book, you start out with Dial M for Mischief, the first book in the series. It makes things much easier to follow.
In this book, Jessica and Matt, a homicide detective who knew her dad, start working together to find answers to questions.
Matt is a very honorable man who wants to help clear the name of a former cop he respected. And he is very attracted to Jessica. The lust nearly oozes off the pages, in a good way.
Jessica is an airhead who evidently has no respect for boundaries, the truth or other people. At times she puts her sister Jade in a difficult situation, she puts Matt's career in jeopardy and generally blunders through life doing what she darn well pleases. She has no evident concern for who may be adversely affected until after the fact.
I was not a fan of Jessica.
This is an interesting story. The plot is well developed and the twists and turns keep the reader interested. I am pretty sure I know the solution to a couple of the yet to be mysteries. The puzzles are involved enough to make any fan of mysteries want to find answers.
Character development is one of Ms Michaels' strong points. People are well rounded and generally interesting. The secondary characters in this book add to the story and help move things forward. I especially liked Ernesto.
If you like mysteries with romance thrown in this is a book you will enjoy. But, if you have a queasy feeling about Jessica, don't be surprised.
*** "Mischief becomes her" is the second of four light lively romantic capers by Kasey Michaels, about the gorgeous Sunshine sisters. The girls tickle out smiles while solving the apparent suicide of their retired cop dad, and the cold cases that could have caused his murder. The youngest, our main heroine, nervy investigative reporter for cable TV news, Jessica, flirts provocatively and vamps rumpled older widower cop on vacation Matt. Responsible eldest PI Jade is married to, but conflicted about, southern gentleman Court. Diplomatic actress Jolie loves millionaire Sam. In his Philadelphia mansion, the couples, and Irish setter, team up against the mayor and their greedy mother, bake brownies, race the Mercedes, swim, and house a helpful homie from the 'hood. [Spoiler: A convict too easily conveniently confesses.] Pushing new clothes on Matt tilts Jesse to the superficial side. Amusing, but annoying, maybe because I did the same. Hmmm.
This is the first book I've read by this author. Not bad at all, the plot was engaging and I thought it was a nice blend of romance and crime solving. The characters were nice and wholesome, Jessica in particular. She's charming, smart, witty and compassionate, I was also vaguely interested in Jade and Court's story but perhaps not enough to read the next book. I might though because the cases haven't all been solved yet.
I always loved conversations between Matt and Ernesto. I also loved the humour Jess and Matt shared.
I give this story 3 1/2 stars. I enjoyed the romance, but found the many other storylines to be distracting. This is the second of a series of three books. I read the first one several years ago, but don't remember much about it. The mystery revolves around who killed Jessica Sunshine's father. The mystery was interesting, but wasn't solved in this book, which I found annoying. There are several cases the father was working on, something about a gemstone which brings bad luck, three couples to involve in romance, a low income boy to help, and on and on. Too much is apparently resolved in other books. I did like this, but I recommend you start with the first book in order to best understand what is going on.
Jessica Sunshine is using her position as a local news anchor to help solve her father's death. It's infuriating cop Matt Denby who just wants to help keep the lovely woman safe and sound. He thinks he's too old for her but can't keep away.
I liked it. the story was entertaining, quick and light. The writing style reminds me of Carly Phillips, which is a good thing. I will look for the rest of the series, book 1 and 3, and probably other books by this author too.
I thought the story was great and I love how she has connected the becketts from then and now and he mystery of the Empress Emerald. I can't wait to read the next 2 books in the series.
