Dr. Ann Wigmore, teacher, healer, Living Foods Lifestyle® founder and Center director and author of numerous books and articles on Living Foods, dedicated her life to educating the world about the transforming qualities of this wonderful lifestyle. She wrote over fifteen books, distributing over one million copies,[citation needed] and lectured in thirty-five countries. The Vegetarian Times Magazine once stated, "Dr. Ann Wigmore is to sprouts what George Washington Carver is to peanuts. Both are food geniuses of a sort. The next time you see sprouts on a salad bar or in a store, thank Dr. Ann."
In 1968, Ann Wigmore co-founded the Hippocrates Health Institute, a health resort in the United States, with Viktoras Kulvinskas. Known as "the mother of living foods", she was an early pioneer in the use of wheatgrass juice and living foods for detoxifying and healing the body, mind, and spirit.
In her autobiography, Why Suffer?: How I Overcame Illness & Pain Naturally, Wigmore recalls observing her grandmother using herbs and natural remedies as a child in Lithuania.
Dr Ann was Founder-Director of the Ann Wigmore Natural Health Institute in Puerto Rico and the Ann Wigmore Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts. She died an untimely death from smoke inhalation in a fire in her Boston center in February, 1994. At the time of her death, she was 84 years young and had more energy than most 20-year-olds!
Today, her methods are still being taught at the Ann Wigmore Natural Health Institute.
I am fascinated with Ann Wigmore books right now. I just can't get enough! Especially looking forward to "Be your own doctor".
I currently have some wheatgrass growing on top of my fridge, courtesy of Ann's instructions. :) I hope to have a living foods kitchen one day that rivals hers!
I have tried wheatgrass juice before, but haven't used it regularly or extensively. I love the fact that it is something that is natural that I can grow myself (vs. have to order it from somewhere), it's cheap (vs an expensive supplement), and according to Ann, you can use it for just about ANYTHING.
I will update my review after I have tried everything suggested and tell how it goes!
This book's statistics and documented studies gave me the courage to try wheat grass juice. I though it would be vile. At first it was, but now I sort of crave it. I'm so glad to learn there are other ways to eat wehat than whole wheat breads and boiled wheat cereal.
All one needs to know about growing, preparing and using wheatgrass. sometimes a bit more explanation would be great, or a more structured one. still it is the best condensed knowledge on wheatgrass I my hands on
The beginning talks a lot about what wheat grass is supposed to be good for, which is believable, but I felt there was not nearly enough scientific evidence or studies cited. I felt like we were supposed to take her claims at face-value.
It was great, there is a lot of info available in this book that you can hardly find on the internet. It includes the first-hand experiences of a professional wheatgrass-grower. I give only 4 stars, because there are a few statements\stories that undermine the credibility of the writer. E.g. the story of the woman who walked across the states within 3 weeks by eating only wheatgrass of course. Don’t include something like that in an otherwise great book.
For a 30-year old book, I give it four stars, but most of what is in the book can be found on http://hippocratesinst.org/. It's outdated and the usefulness of it has run its course, so 3-stars.
This is a great, short introduction. Even though the book was written 30 or so years ago, it's still very helpful. I've gathered some trays, seed, and soil, and I'm ready to get started!
