Meg Walton hopes her days of sleuthing are behind her. So when another murder occurs, the secret witch turned sleuth finds her life turned upside down.
This time, the case is personal when Meg finds out one of her dearest friends is the victim. Even more, Meg's friend has made enemies of the most influential family in town. Somehow, Meg has to find a way to navigate her grief while cracking her hardest case yet. Is Meg finally in over her head?
I'm going to first say that I initially really liked these books. They ARE cozy little mystery books that you can curl up on the couch with. My only issue is that they very much follow a formula, which began to get old after book four or five. The formula goes something like this:
Meet so-and-so. So-and-so dies. Meg wants to investigate but either Mom or Connor or both don't want her to but she does. Long list of suspects. Lots of ineffective questioning of suspects. "Don't even think about leaving town." Cat gives Meg grand insight, case is then solved.
That sounds worse than it is. Did I love these books? No. Did I kind of start making fun of them while reading the last 3 or 4? Yes. But would I recommend them? Yes, I would. Because each book is the perfect length for a bubble bath and if you can just enjoy them for what they, you won't be disappointed. This isn't Lillian Jackson Braun or Agatha Christie, nor is it meant to be. They're fun little stories that have some flaws but are overall...a good read (see what I did there).
If the character's profile was explained as her being insecure, irrational, presumptuous and chaos-loving, this series wouldn't be so bad. However, this series leaves one wondering why so many parts were left out because the author doesn't connect much in the stories. It's as if the author gets a good start, then loses focus, tries to return the story to relevancy, and back to the same cycle the next day of writing without editing. There are also inconsistencies in the writing with names and events. Proofreading was not apart of the process. I'm used to typos in digital sets as well as wacky female characters, but there were too many gaps in every book. I couldn't make it past book five because I couldn't take it anymore. I can normally read a book per day time permitting-- but I had no motivation this series so it's time to move on.
Read two of these, making an outline, and you, too, will be able to write another book in this series. Pure boilerplate and with very little to differentiate one book from the next. The characters were somewhat interesting, but the police detective's interviewing skills were pathetic and lame. The witches were not at all witchey, although I did enjoy the talking cat. What did I think of the last book? Give me a break! Totally out of left field with no foreshadowing at all. I really wish I had skipped the last short " book" completely. Would like to see this author work a while with a decent editor. I think we would then see some really good stories that would be worth reading.
These books are excellent for teenage girls. Not so much for adults. I did not dislike the short stories. They are great for 14-17year olds. I am going to get the set for my 16 year old granddaughter. I know she will love them. I would of given them a 5 rating. However I HATED the last story. It sets a horrible example for young people. The SOB wasn't man enough to own up to his evil deed. Refused to take responsibility for his cowardly deeds. Yet slimy enough to come begging for "A FAVOR" The man had no shame. Quite often I'm sorry just doesn't cut it. Telling young girls to grant favors to gutter trash is STUPID. I think she should of wiped his past memory and banished him to Isis country.
These are half cozy mysteries: just the murder part, the cozy part is missing. Each book sees donut witch Meg trying to solve the murder of or involving her "very close friend X" which gets rather redundant after the first four times and we realize we've never heard of any of these friends. Then you realize you've never met anyone on town except for her mom, chaste boyfriend, and grandma (who always solves the crime).
The murders are well plotted, the writing is clever, but I did not continue past book four because I was hoping for cozy, not just murder. Will definitely read more current books by Amelia, though, I'm sure she grew!
I found this to be an enjoyable as an entertaining read. I'll admit it would have been more so if the author would have found ways to introduce her talking cat into the stories because after about the third story in it began to sound monotonous. You have to wonder about the detective skills of the cop boyfriend if he didn't find it questionable that strange things happened every time his girlfriend went to check to see if there was an open back door...ijs. Otherwise it's just like I said before, it's an entertaining read.
I am not really into the type of books that would involve witch craft of any kind, but, these books seemed light and whimsical and I was enjoying them, and then at the end. If you want to talk about a twist, I was fine that they found another witch, but, the part about Connor being a werewolf was just stupidly ridiculous. It ruined the whole set for me. If this series had gone on any further with him using his abi!ities, I would have stopped reading and deleted the whole box set.
I have enjoyed these stories and like to read more of some others, but I would like them more if the author stuck with the storyline and less of the history in each of these books! I was a little confused and a little impatient reading them. Constantly explaining that her cat was her grandmother's spirit inside of the cat was boring, and so was some of the other things. But thanks for the books and stories!!😀😀
Morgan knows, or pretends to know, approximately zilch about police procedure. Her heroine, Meg, jumps to conclusions with almost no evidence but always turns out to be right. So why in the heck did I eagerly read all the way through this book? Because it is very entertaining. Morgan caught my attention and held it through nine books in one. Recommended for just about everybody.
Another great set of books. All of theses cozy mysteries grabs you from the start and keeps you guessing until the very end. I just love all of the books from this author. And the new book is just as great as the rest. If you like a great mystery then this box set is for you. I highly recommend these books.
There all the same story lines, she helps her boyfriend solve murders using same magic all the time, a lot are her friends dying but they never mention them again, they have the same argument every time she wants to help solve the murder, everything is too repetitive for me but do like the characters especially her cat who happens to be her grandma lol
Sometimes the best things come in inexpensive packages. This happens to be one of those times. Two (and later, more) people who are trying to live 'normal' lives even though they are much more! Nice character development, interesting stories, great settings; keep them coming!
In my view point, one of these stories is OK, a trifle juvenile, but all the other stories are the same with the only real difference being the names of the victims and the perpetrators, even the modes of death are similar. Therefore, it would be wiser to keep each story completely separate, with possibly other authors added if you wish for a more rounded storyline.
I enjoyed these books as they were light and whimsical. Each book has a separate mystery but they flow together. There are twists that keep you guessing who did it. It starts with 2 characters and more added as it goes. The characters are well described. The narration is good and maintains your interest.
Witch Cozy Mystery Nine Book Set was a great read by Amelia Morgan. This box set consists of; Ax To Grind, Killer Twist, A Bewitching Murder, The Nuts and Bolts of Murder, A Riddle of a Murder, Strangling Ambition, Therapy Can Be Murder, Sick of Murder, and Hexes and Other Hairy Situations. I really enjoyed these books and can't wait to read more by the author.
Nine great stories about a family of witches, well, two witches and one talking cat! Mel, her mom, Beth, and her grandmother, whose soul they transferred into a black cat... Loved it!
I found these books repetitive and pretty predictable. It was like the author was picking the sentences from a "how to" book on writing. Because I can't seem to leave a book unread, I waded through all of them but was anxious to finish and get on to something else.
I noticed that every person to die in these stories were always friends. For the most part Meg always cast the same spells even though she could do so many more. Would have liked to have seen some other spells. Didn't like how this set ended. Left you hanging.
Perfect loved every episode of the book set would love for there to be more stories to see how they manage knowing each others secrets and solving crime. As well as expanding there loves at Enchanted Bay.
Easy quick reading with simple plot lines and likeable characters
The books were easy and quick to read though the writer could have gone into a lot more depth and detail. I occasionally felt as though I was reading a book written for younger readers but enjoyable just the same.
Easy reading but perhaps plots are too predictable. But main characters , Meg,Beth, and Connor are likable SD no more than one dimensional. A little more conflict with other strange or occult characters might add some more colorful plots.
I like the cosy mysteries, but it bugs me as a non native speaker that there are grammar mistakes in the books. On top of that the author explains the same thing a couple of times in the book. Otherwise it's a relaxing read.
Waded through the first book in the box set but couldn't bring myself to finish wading through the second book in the set. Too much same old, same old.
