영혼이 부서질 정도로 비극적인 일을 겪은 이에게 어지간한 위로나 격려는 별 소용이 없으며, 그보다는 이런 식으로 이야기들에서 실을 자아내 스스로 자신의 영혼을 꿰매어 수선할 수 있도록 도와주는 것이 좋지 않을까, 를 고찰해 보고자 이 시리즈를 쓰기 시작했다고 작가는 밝히고 있다.

가까이 다가오면 반드시 사랑하는 남녀를 헤어지게 만든다는 연못, 앞일을 예고하는 능력을 가진 산장, 사람이 감추고 있는 악행을 꿰뚫어 보는 아이, '마구루'라는 짐승의 퇴치해야 할 운명을 가지고 태어난 여인의 이야기를 비롯한 여섯 편의 연작 단편이 실려 있다.

Miyuki Miyabe (宮部みゆき Miyabe Miyuki) is a popular contemporary Japanese author active in a number of genres including science fiction, mystery fiction, historical fiction, social commentary, and juvenile fiction.
Miyabe started writing novels at the age of 23. She has been a prolific writer, publishing dozens of novels and winning many major literary prizes, including the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize in 1993 for Kasha and the Naoki Prize in 1998 for Riyū [The Reason] (理由). A Japanese film adaptation of Riyû, directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, was released in 2004.

どの話もおもしろかったけど、特に切なさやちょっとした温かみが感じられるタイプの話が自分は好きなんだなと感じた(この巻だと「くりから御殿」「節気顔」、あとは第四話のおこぼさんのエピソードみたいな)。

Amazing read as always from Miyuki Miyabe. Her horror stories are always brilliant and nuanced, elegantly capturing the heart and soul of common folk during Edo period. Even her samurai characters are either retired or flawed in certain ways, eg a country bumpkin accent. There are no heroes in her stories, it's all regular folk with heartbreaking stories. She's such an excellent writer you end up empathising with the monster or ghost. It's because of human flaws - greed, jealousy, etc that morphs into evil after death. The dead have their stories too, and sometimes the living lie.

「まぐるが出て来る」と言われ、「？？？」と読み始めたが、確かに出て来た。
ただ、読んでいるときは頭の中が江戸時代だったので、ハリポタのマグルのことは全く考えなかったので、後でもう一回指摘されて、物凄く驚いてしまった。

内容は相変わらず面白い。
このシリーズ、奇数巻と偶数巻で雰囲気が変わるらしいが、私は１と３を立て続けに読んだ。
ならば次の４巻は心温まる系になるのか。
それは嬉しい。
このシリーズ、読んでて楽しいけれど、ずっとこの感じが続くと飽きるし辛い。
