Honestly, I could go on and on about my love for Jen Turano's writing until Buttercup came home. She is my favorite historical author. I know that some people have a hard time with the ridiculousness of her stories, but honestly, they make me laugh so hard. They are always the perfect mix of comedy, romance, drama, and inspirational all wrapped into one enjoyable book sized package.
This might have been her most ridiculous story yet and that is saying something since I distinctly remember a problem with peacocks in In Good Company. But I think that the chickens beat out the peacocks.
Ian and Izzie were both extremely interesting characters, I loved how Turano showed a little bit more of the business aspect in this story instead of just the upper class.
This isn't my favorite of her works, but I was still filled with such a nostalgia after I finished this one. I wished that I hadn't because I missed it.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, all opinions, however, are my own.

I love the color scheme of it plus the facial expressions of the model. It all fits the story quite well. Jen Turano’s debut book, “A Change of Fortune”, has continued to be my favorite book by her and while this newest still didn’t take that first-place spot, it definitely reminded me of that book very much with the disguise plot-line that I enjoy so much. While this new novel did feel a little more romance-y at a few points and there was the cad we are supposed to dislike, it was cleaner in the kisses and was an overall entertaining story. “Flights of Fancy” has begun this new series well and I look forward to read the next books!
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. *I received this book for free from the Author for this honest review.
I really needed a laugh and this book took care of that need. There are so many wonderfully crazy things in this book that kept me turning the pages wondering how it would all turn out. Seriously, who would let a chicken or a cow in the house as pets? Would you hire a housekeeper who couldn't boil water? Crazy!
Isadora is a New York socialite who needs a place to hide from an unwanted and murderous suitor. She finds it at a farm in Pennsylvania. She struggles and wants to be successful as a housekeeper, but when you have goats eat the laundry, it can cause complications. She has one complication after another. There are many moments where you had to laugh.
Ian is a successful attorney. He needs the farm to be as uncomplicated as possible so he can conduct business in the city. He just needs someone to manage things, deal with his aging Aunt and Uncle and the four kids they decided to take in in their old age.
This book isn't all about the humor, there are some conflicts. Ian and Isadora have some huge challenges to overcome. But really, the humor runs the book.
Source: I requested a copy from Netgalley. My thanks to Bethany House for approving my request. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
I pretty much decided Jen Turano's books weren't for me a few years back because they're silly - like to the point where my personality didn't find them fun anymore because they are so unrealistic. I realize lots of people really like this style of book and that's great, I just don't.
And then today came. And I'm fighting off the flu so I didn't feel well. I had a stack of books just waiting to be read, but instead, I wanted something that would be exceedingly lighthearted and easy to read. I've heard various other book bloggers talk about this book recently, so I decided to give it a go. Also, I think the cover's really pretty. ;)
WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book was more enjoyable than I expected. I read it all afternoon and although I did skim in parts, it kept my attention and made me wonder what was going to happen next. It's kinda like a Hallmark movie, just not quite so predictable.
To make this easy, I'm just going to go with a few pros and cons that I came up with while reading the book. And please, keep in mind that this isn't the style of book that I normally read - so if you've read any of Jen Turano books in the past and liked them, then you'll probably really like this one. It's my favorite of hers that I've read. (I think I've read two or three before.)
Pros: I liked the main character. She was realistic most of the time, she didn't annoy me, and she was amusing. Plus, even though she wasn't telling the truth about her life, she basically told them that she wasn't telling the truth. Which that sounds weird, but it worked well in the book and was actually a big selling point for me. Also, the book was well written and easy to follow which isn't always the case for me when there are dukes and such involved.
Cons: It was exceedingly silly - which is both a good thing and a bad thing. A good thing because it was amusing, a bad thing because it was kinda eye-rolly with how often "bad" stuff happened. Like rolling down hills, landing in mud, etc... Also, the main character was always being picked up and carried by the main guy when she had gotten hurt, etc... I mean, really though? I'm fairly certain that wouldn't have happened and so that type of thing bothers me a lot.
The book starts with the main character being at a ball with a duke, and the duke's not a cool guy and he's not being nice with how he treats the main character. He's just kinda leering at her, so it's not detailed or anything. Also, later in the book, there were a few things that happened that weren't "bad" but I wouldn't consider proper.
CONCLUSION
I'm glad I gave this book a try because it was what I was looking for today (silly, light-hearted, and not needing much brainpower), but not my normal read at all.
RATING
I’m giving Flights of Fancy 3 out of 5 stars.
((I got this ebook from NetGalley in exchange for me reviewing it, all thoughts and opinions are my own.))
Turano is the queen of slapstick CF. This books has all the familiar things you’d expect to see in a Turano book— eccentric characters and animal escapades. The plot is a familiar one for CF—a woman of means disguising herself to escape a misfortunate marriage. Julie Klassen did it in “Maid of Fairbourne Hall” and Cathy Marie Hake did it in “Fancy Pants.” But of course each authors brings her own voice to the table.
When you can read a book in 3 days after a reading slump of months, you know it’s a good book!
Honestly, when I read the first three chapters, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. The first chapters for me were more like a 2 star rating. But then, then there was a (quite hilarious) first impression. Ah, yes. One that was totally unrealistic but totally entertaining and I just had to see how her employment at Glory Manor panned out. And I must say, both of the main characters grew on me until I realized how much I was enjoying this fun read. This book reminded me how much I love to smile and laugh while reading.
It was a lighthearted story with deep lessons learned. Funny events that I honestly could kind of relate to. I mean, I’ve never had a Buttercup in the house, but I have had my fair share of chickens, goats, and mini horses in the house. ;)
I love that the farm loved their animals. And their naming the animals was so cute. Also, the four children in this story was adorable and it would not be the same without them! (They kind of reminded me of my own short story with orphans in it.)
I found this book to be somewhat unrealistic for the time period, it it honestly didn’t bother me. I just enjoyed it so much! And it was interesting to learn about the business end of things.
The writing style was different, but really good! It’s kinda silly, but there was some words used in description that I had never heard before. On one hand, that made it difficult to read (especially in those first chapters) but actually I think it was good to expand my reading vocabulary.
The romance wasn’t my top favorite by any means, but I think the characters matured so much in the end. At first, it was so much about physical appearance that it was SO annoying to me. But then, their relationship went deeper and their purposes in life changed who they were. They were pretty perfect for each other... There was a typical miscommunication at the end, but even though it was predictable at times, it was enough excitement for me to finish this book past midnight. And that says a lot for a climax of a story.
It’s a story about finding your true purpose and identity. Often Gods plan is different than what the world views as successful and important. But trust me, God’s plan is far wilder and far more important than you, I, or society could even dream up.
In the end, I’m so glad to have read this story and glad to have been gifted this whole series! Thanks, sis!!
Bwahahahaha! Snort! Guffaw! My wits have been scrambled by mirth after listening to another Jen Turano rom/com masterpiece. Quirkiness that's almost scary. Slapstick that's burst-out-loud laughable. Not to mention the critters who don't act like they should. Buttercup, the expert tracker cow who also thinks she should live inside the house with her human herd. Elmer, the maniacal hen who just wants to be loved. Chortle. I was in reader heaven.
Izzy is a riot -- the proverbial pampered miss who finds herself in all kinds of unexpected situations once she talks her way into a job on a farm. There's a sweet naivety about her that makes her likable despite her definite class disconnect. And her innate kindness draws folks to her and lets her inner light shine.
There's a great quote that I can only paraphrase because I listened to the audible version of this book and I was walking at the time. But it went along the lines of how God puts obstacles in our path in order to show us who He knows we can be. And that's definitely the kind of faith journey both the hero and heroine are on in this story.
Ian has gotten so caught up in being a success that he's almost forgotten what's really important. And then Izzy bursts into his life and turns everything upside down. Loved this hero and his quest to stay true to the values he was raised on.
There's even a bit of a mystery and more than one diabolical villain to conquer before we reach the stand-up-and-cheer happily ever after. The perfect mood lifting escape for these trying times.
What a fun start to a new series! Flights of Fancy was a cute romantic read with relatable characters and witty dialogue. This book was an entertaining, easy read.
It was impossible for me to not like the two main characters of the book. The author creates a wonderful scene at the beginning of the book to draw readers to Isadora, or Izzie, and make them instantly sympathize with and like her. Ian is equally as instantly likable and the two together are so much fun. It was nice seeing them form a friendship and then seeing a sweet romance blossom. Besides the two main characters, there are several secondary characters that add to the mayhem that takes place within the pages of the book.
This was a well-written story and moves along at a pace that kept the story interesting. There is plenty of humor and light-hearted banter keeping the story a light read. After reading this book I'm wondering why the author isn't higher on my must-read list. I like her writing style and the way she creates down-to-earth, real characters that are easy to relate to.
I definitely recommend this book for fans of historical fiction. It's an easy read and one that will have you looking for more from this author. I'm anxious to see what happens in the next book in the series. I can't wait for more from these characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not obligated to write a review. All opinions are mine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I looked forward to it every time I picked it up--wanting to see what would happen next with Izzie and Ian and the gang. This is a delightful tale filled with humor and heart, with a beautiful faith message. The overall themes of loving what is on the inside rather than the trappings of the outside shines through on the pages. The animals are a hoot, as are all of the supporting characters. The light-hearted novel has so much going for it, including a fast-paced plot and a bit of mystery surrounding what was going on at Glory Manor. I love Jen Turano's writing, she makes late 1800s America come to life with its sights, sounds, and even smells. Izzie's development as a person was absolutely captivating. Her evolution from headstrong but compliant heiress to "household manager" (with all of the corresponding foibles and catastrophes sprinkled in along the way) was enchanting to read. I excitedly look forward to the next installment of the series!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I think I actually liked our hero, Ian MacDREAMY, even more then Izzie herself.
I've looked at the one star reviews for this book, and they just don't get or appreciate this kind of writing. It's supposed to be silly and far-fetched at times. If you're looking for a serious, historically dramatic story, then this author is not for you. She is infamous for characters getting dirty (like muddy, mud), multi-generational characters included, and animal antics (yes, farm animals as characters!) in her books, and once again, she does not disappoint! Loved this book and adore this author!!!
I bought this book for me, and ALL the friends I will be loaning it to, to enjoy as well!
A high society lady goes undercover to escape marriage to a heinous man. She lands her self in a predicament (or two) that she isn't quite capable of handling. Cows who can open doors, goats who have a taste for freshly laundered clothes, and chickens...everywhere. This all shapes up into a hilarious tale you'll want to finish!
The book boasts some adorable characters, from chubby babies to mischievous cows. Many a smile happened while I read this book.
There was instant chemistry between the two main characters, which always makes a book more enjoyable to read for me. Not only was there chemistry between them, but everyone just meshed well together making it seem like all had known each other forever. There was just a "home sweet home" feel when they were all together.
Uncle Amos & Aunt Birdie were the best! I loved the "grandparent" feel they gave to EVERYONE. They didn't care who they were "related" to, everyone was to call them Aunt Birdie and Uncle Amos. They gave with such selfless hearts, real servant hood. I just really loved them!! 😍
There was a ton of growth for both of the main characters.
You can truly see the change in Isadora as she comes to find herself as an independent women, instead of being what her mother taught her she had to be. She grows from this sheltered, spoiled, demanding 😉 gentlewoman to this strong, brave, determined, confident young lady. Everything she knew about life flipped upside down, but she quickly realized that the life she lived wasn't the only way one could be happy.
Ian also grew a lot in this book. His dreams and desires he'd had his entire life changed when 4 little kiddos and one ridiculously under-qualified housekeeper wormed their way into his heart. He learned that status didn't mean as much as he thought it did, and family was everything. He, like Aunt Birdie and Uncle Amos, was such a giving soul. He didn't question anyone who needed help, he just extended his hand and his wallet. I will say this, I was very disappointed in how Ian handled learning the truth about Isadora. He never hid that he wanted to marry well and climb the social ladder. I am BEYOND glad he came to his senses, but still... 😒
This book has two "bad guys" and both were appropriately slimy. Each has his own agenda, but they never conflicted with each other and both subplots were dealt with in quick succession. I love it when the good guy gets the win and the girl.
This book had some adorable moments, and made me laugh a few times. Jen just has a way with spinning stories! I rated it a 4/5 stars. I cannot wait to see what other shenanigans we get into with our next heiress!
*I received this book from the author**All opinions are my own*
He had the sneaking suspicion her question was completely serious, which spoke volumes about her experience, or lack thereof, in the kitchen.
Delightfully engaging, Turano once again takes readers on a fanciful jaunt into the countryside with an heiress seeking anonymity from an unsuitable suitor. But fanciful isn’t the only thing going on here. What struck me most about this story is Isadora’s journey to becoming better—a better person, that is.
While many assumptions are made about Isadora’s abilities (or inabilities as the case may be), one thing she is not in want of is self-examination. And when ‘Izzie’ finds herself lacking, she owns up to it and changes. Her transformation is miraculous; like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. Along the way, there is plenty of entertainment and laughter which is classic Turano style.
Ian MacKenzie is a successful businessman hoping to climb even higher by marrying a society girl. His adoptive parents own the farm where Isadora is masquerading as a housekeeper and he spends a lot of time there helping them out. Shenanigans are happening in the area, some that turn rather dangerous. But amidst it all, Ian also discovers there is more to life than climbing the proverbial social ladder.
Christian fiction is all the better for the added addition of Jen Turano’s books. Each one has its eccentricities, making them exceptionally entertaining while faith in the Lord is woven skillfully throughout as well. It’s never overdone, like Izzie’s attempts in the kitchen. :-)
I highly recommend Flights of Fancy to historical fiction fans. It’s a sweet treat if there ever was one! I was gifted a copy from the publisher and author with no expectation of a review. No compensation has been received.
quite honestly, though I have previously read two books by Jen before, it would be more accurate to say that I just skimmed them because I do not remember them at all. I've had this sitting on my kindle for almost 2 years now and every time I picked it up I put it down because I couldn't get through the first couple chapters. however I decided to give it one final try and see if I couldn't make it a little bit further, and I'm so glad I did.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can't remember the last time I laughed at a book... smiled, certainly, but never before have I let out a chuckle because of a character's hijinks. the storytelling is so charming - it reminded me a little bit of Anne of Green Gables (but the movie version - I haven't read the books since I was a child) and the characters were all delightful. the romance was flirty and fun, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop. it was just a very fun story that I would be happy to read again.🤗
A delightfully fun read! Jen Turano has such a gift for writing stories that will make you laugh and put a smile on your face. This one is simply adorable and full of silly antics! It also includes plenty of heartwarming moments and a sweet romance.
“A woman who doesn’t like chickens isn’t to be trusted.”
A manor by any other name is a farm, an unfortunate truth that Izzie learns quickly after being dropped off at Glory Manor. Between Buttercup the cow wandering through the house, a hen named Elmer that likes to peck at Izzie’s ankles, goats eating the laundry, and an apparently-confused but endearing Uncle Amos who chases people with a rifle and accuses them of being chicken murderers, this heiress hiding out as a housekeeper (without a clue how to even boil water) is smack in the middle of what I can only describe as my worst nightmare – but hilarious when happening to someone else.
“She’d also not been expecting to find herself deposited on what seemed to be some type of farm, complete with chickens running amok and a cow standing on the front porch.”
Which means I laughed pretty much from start to finish, sweet message and heartwarmingly tender scenes notwithstanding. The adorable orphans (especially precious Daisy), Aunt Birdie, and Uncle Amos were the perfect supporting characters for this special brand of Turano-orchestrated mayhem. And when I wasn’t laughing, I was swooning over Ian who is my favorite Jen Turano hero – not the least of which reason is because he considers himself smitten with the written word.
“The sight of that grin stole the breath right out of her chest, robbing her of anything remotely sophisticated she might have wanted to say to him and leaving her feeling nothing like the cultured society lady she’d always prided herself on being.”
Bottom Line: Flights of Fancy gave In Good Company some close competition for the position of my fave Jen Turano novel. In the end, Millie Longfellow & In Good Company did just edge it out to retain the title, but it was a tight race. Endearing characters, swoony romance and madcap hilarity share the page with a touching reminder that one can be rich in many things besides money – and poor in many things even with great monetary wealth.
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I purchased for my own collection.)
Flights of Fancy is another wonderful, witty tale by Jen Turano.
It is 1885. Join American Heiress, Isadora Delafield, as she takes her Flight of Fancy to escape the clutches of a most unsuitable suitor. She flees from New York Society to a remote farm in Pennsylvania. There she encounters a successful man of business, Ian MacKenzie, his Aunt Birdie and eccentric Uncle Amos and four endearing orphans. She tries to pass herself off as a housekeeper with hilarious results. While learning a completely different way of life, she finds satisfaction in serving others. Ms. Turano takes her characters through circumstances that help them realize that sometimes wealth isn’t everything. I can always count on her for some fun along the way with antics by the characters- be they human or animal. This story has Buttercup, the cow, who likes to visit in the kitchen or the parlor and the pet attack hen named Elmer! Along with the signature comedy there is a mystery to solve and villains to dissuade. I recommend this book for those who want a lighthearted yet inspirational, historical read.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
'And you thought it wise to provide a woman who'd gotten herself stuck in the wringer of a washing machine with a rifle and bullets?'
Jen Turano is a particular favorite of mine and she will have you laughing out loud all the way through her books, while learning a wonderful spiritual lesson.
Miss Isadora Delafield is a New York high society American heiress who has everything she could ever want. When her mother begins to pressure her greatly to marry a British duke, she begins to think something has to give. The duke is elderly and decidedly lecherous and rumor has it his previous 3 wives met with very suspicious deaths. So, together with a friend and two butlers, Isadora flees New York to search out a job as a housekeeper. Never mind the fact that she has absolutely no idea what a housekeeper actually does. When she lands at Glory Manor, 'Izzy' finds a quite chaotic farm and a very handsome man who owns it. Ian MacKenzie is a very savvy businessman who wants to marry up in society but his adoptive parents, who live at Glory Manor, hire Izzy to be housekeeper. Ian soon learns that Izzy is quite inept, but she is a wonderfully delightful young woman. Soon, however, mysterious accidents begin to plague Glory Manor and all things point to some threats against the area.
This book was absolutely delightful to read and kept me entertained greatly. The antics of these characters will keep you rolling with laughter, especially Buttercup, the tracking cow, who likes to stay indoors, and Elmer, the hen who likes to be carried around. There are also secondary characters that were quite interesting which I hope find their way into a forthcoming novel and probably will since this is the beginning of a series. Bravo!
*My thanks to Bethany House for a complimentary preview copy of this novel. All opinions stated here are entirely my own.
Get ready for some trademark Turano humor and hijinks!
Sadly this wasn’t my favorite of Jen Turano’s novels but it still had all of the things that make her writing so unique! From the creative cast of characters with all their varying eccentricities, to animals that seem to have their own personalities, to a mystery needing to be solved, and a cute love story!
I enjoyed seeing Isadora and Ian come to realize that money and social standing really don’t matter. That it’s the people we have in our lives that make us rich. They were a well matched pair and it was fun to watch as they fell in love even though neither of them were looking for romance.
So, yes this book took me a little longer to get through, but there was still a lot to enjoy and if you love this author’s whimsical writing style be sure to check this one out!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book had me laughing out loud, such an entertaining and enjoyable read, I could picture this one as a movie! One minute our girl Isadora [Izzie] is waited on hand and foot, and the next she is in a quandary to dress herself, and how to boil water. How is she ever going to pass herself off as a housekeeper? Funny! There are some challenges that are met here, is the beloved Uncle suffering from dementia, or is an outside force tormenting him and many others? Got your attention, this is just a tease of what you are going to have once you turn those pages. A cow in the house? A chicken? A mansion and balls, along with the above make for a great read! I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.
It’s no secret that Jen Turano is an extraordinary author. Each and every one of her books brings joy and a smile to my face. There’s not a lot of authors that bring humor to their historic novels, which is too bad, because I happen to think they go together quite nicely. Turano thinks that as well.
I have been excited about Flights of Fancy since I first heard about it. A high society socialite disguising herself as a housekeeper? Sign me up! And while you know what the final outcome of the book is going to be, it is a romantic story after all, that doesn’t stop you from enjoying every single moment of it. Turano writes in such a way that you become involved in the story line. She makes you fall in love with every single character, whether they are primary or secondary.
Isadora is a hoot in this book, but what I liked about her the most was her journey in finding out what God wanted for her life. She blossomed without having her mother around to correct everything she did, and I enjoyed seeing her grow into this beautiful, strong woman. And I must say this, when she first arrived at Glory Manor, well I have never laughed so hard over a book. In fact, I had to read the scene out loud to my daughter because it was so hysterical. This my friends is why I love reading Turano’s books.
Along with the humor, she provides little lessons that will stick with you for a long time. Such as this…… “My dear, it has been my experience that God occasionally throws obstacles our way so that we’re forced to grow into the people He wants us to be.” That is my absolute favorite quote of the entire book, and not because it sets the theme for the entire book. If we’re honest, it sets the theme for all of our own, individuals lives. When I look back at everything I’ve been through, this quote absolutely makes sense and brings peace. In the midst of humor, romance and mystery, Turano has managed to speak straight to my heart about something so deep that I wasn’t expecting to find it here.
Friends, Jen Turano is a brilliant author. I adore her books, just like I adore her. If you’re looking for a great laugh, pick up this book. If you love reading historical books, read this one. If you’re looking for a deep message, you’ll find it here. And if you love seeing two people come together in unusual circumstances, you’ll see that as well. There truly is something for everyone!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was fun...just so much fun...lots of animals...goats, chickens, a cow that loves a lovely home...clumsy socialite woman...adorable man attorney...four ornery and totally lovable children...and an Aunt and Uncle that started it all on a farm. Who couldn’t enjoy a read with all of that ( besides we actually do bring our goat in the house from time to time- FUN!)
It’s a charming story as only Jen Turano can deliver!
Really don’t miss out on this author. She is her very own genre!

Flights of Fancy by Jen Turano takes us back to July of 1885. Isadora Delafield has a mother determined to marry her off to a gentleman with a title. The older Duke of Montrose has set his sights on Isadora and her mother, Hester is thrilled with the match. Isadora is repulsed by the Duke and his reputation sends her running with the aid of those who care for her. Isadora or Izzie finds herself in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania applying for the position as housekeeper at Glory Manor. With a name like Glory Manor, Izzie imagines a large residence where she can direct and organize servants which happens to be her expertise. Mr. Ian MacKenzie was raised by Amos and Birdie Alderson on their farm, Glory Manor. Birdie was injured in a plow incident and Amos has been forgetful lately. Ian needs someone to take care of them while he is managing his business interests in the city. He was unprepared for the four Duffy children that a social worker has put into Birdie’s care. Ian has his doubts about Izzie’s qualifications especially after he must show her how to use the washing machine, but he is in a pinch plus he finds Izzie intriguing. Izzie finds herself adapting to her new situation, but she is concerned by malicious activities happening at Glory Manor and other surrounding farms. Izzie and Ian will need to work together to overcome unexpected challenges. What happens when someone threatens those they love and a promising future?
Flights of Fancy is a delightfully entertaining historical novel. I found the book to be well-written with steady pacing. Isadore Delafield is a great character. She has a controlling mother who wants her daughter to marry a man with a title. The Duke of Montrose fits the bill, but he is twice Isadora’s age. When her best friend’s butler, Mr. Hatfield learns of the Duke’s intentions, he informs Mr. Godkin, the Delafield butler, of the man’s character and what happened to the Duke’s other three wives. The two men come up with a plan to keep Izzie safe. Ian MacKenzie is grateful to Amos and Birdie Alderson for taking him in as a child and making sure he got an education. Ian is now a successful businessman who is determined to marry a society lady. I enjoyed the witty repartee between Izzie and Ian. Izzie has no clue how to perform the most basic of tasks, but she is a whiz at organization and hiring others to accomplish her plans. Add in four rambunctious children, a cow who prefers a house to a barn and a chicken (who really should have been named Nigel). Also, Izzie tends to be long-winded with her unusual explanations (which make Ian forget what he asked in the first place). I found myself laughing from beginning to end while reading Flights of Fancy (I am talking about laugh-out-loud laughing). Jen Turano captured the historical period with her descriptions of the homes (mansions), the beautiful clothing, the attitudes of men and women (especially society mother’s like Harriet Delafield), the transportation utilized, the historical figures mentioned, and the types of businesses run. The Christian element is light but well thought out. Birdie is the character with the strongest faith which she shares with those in her life. My finger was kept busy flipping the virtual pages of my Kindle as I devoured this book. Flights of Fancy is a captivating story with romance, action, rich historical details, suspense, and whimsy.
Jen Turano consistently lives up to my expectations. If ever I want a romantic comedy to brighten my day, her books are always at the top of my list.
Though it may seem far-fetched to have an heiress who's never done a day's work in her life manage a household, this is largely negated by the utter chaos--and unusualness--of the household she is theoretically running. Izzie might be incompetent at basic household tasks like washing clothes and boiling water, but they're desperate, she's there, and she's willing to learn, which is theoretically better than no help at all. Jen Turano is the master of quirky characters and quirkier pets (not one, but TWO this time!).
The setting was very different from Turano's other books, mainly due to taking place on a farm (not even an estate). I enjoyed the relaxed country atmosphere and all the ensuing hijinks one can expect for a city girl out of her natural environment. The labor disputes were a surprise, given how serious an issue they were historically versus how the humorous I expect Jen Turano's books to be. However, she manages the issue with sympathy and aplomb while never losing the sense of fun.
I am not a fan of historical fiction but I never miss a chance to read a novel from Turano. I love the wit and humor and the snappy dialogue. I think I have read most of her novels and this may be the best one yet.
What might happen when Isadora, a young heiress to her family's wealth, flees New York society to escape the the advances of a truly lecherous duke from England? Helped by a butler, she manages to travel to rural Pennsylvania to secure a job as a … housekeeper.
Turano has the amazing ability to include wit, humor, and snappy dialogue in a great plot. I laughed out loud. But this is also a sort of coming of age novel. Isadora had been raised with wealth and now is faced with seeing how some people must live without such privilege. She also experiences the warmth and friendship in a small community foreign to her life in high society.
I like that Turano has included some other issues of the time, such as the conditions mill workers endured. It was a time of wealth building for some at the expense of many others.
I highly recommend this novel. You'll get a bit of romance, a good dose of humor, and a thoughtful exploration of one young privileged woman finding out what is really important in life.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Jen Turano creates magnificent characters. Her people have every strength, virtue, flaw, and weakness they should to make them believable. If I had a quibble, I’d say that sometimes her villains are just a little too perfectly evil, but seriously, I like them just the way they are regardless.
Not only that, she manages to create storylines that aren’t the same old, done a million and one times, plots that just get tied up in a different colored ribbon. Even the most unbelievable scenarios become believable when filtered through her imagination. She’s truly a gifted story-crafter.
Her most recent book, Flights of Fancy, is no exception. In fact, unlike the previous two books of hers that I’ve read, there were no dull spots that made me ache to put it down. I was captivated from beginning to end. I can't tell you how happy I was that I'd requested a review copy
Yes, certain writing issues that I’ve written about in Behind the Scenes and Out of the Ordinary are still there. Many people probably wouldn’t be bothered. Others might. The redundancy in phrasing, the info dumping, the explanations… yes, they were there. I’ve decided it’s Ms. Turano’s style, and since so many people love her work, I’ll have to ignore it—just as sure as she’d probably hate my overuse of em dashes or preference for minimal kissing scenes or whatever.
Having issues that aren’t your favorite doesn’t mean a book isn’t excellent. And that’s just what I realized as I closed this book. Page by page, I felt like I was reading a four-star book.
I was wrong.
The reason I was wrong is simple. This book was a brilliant escape—both figuratively and literarily. ;)
However, that’s not the reason.
The reason this book is a five-star (on Amazon) book for me is that I loved it—because of the beautiful lessons shown through the character of Isadora. Because I saw a beautiful portrait drawn of a woman who took an honest look at herself, found the picture wanting, and did something about it.
The process of becoming Izzie wasn’t overnight, preachy, or too perfect. It was real.
Yep. Flights of Fancy truly was just the right escape for this reader. Bravo, Ms. Turano.
I wanted to enjoy this book but the old guy putting his hands on the main character and looking at her like he did, sick! I stopped reading after like five pages because I am done with books that are filled with sick "men" who only think about a woman and her looks. Okay, okay, this guy's sick but he's likely the only guy in the book but why on earth can I not find a book that doesn't have a guy who can treat a girl like he's suppose to? Hmm?
If I finished the book I'm sure I'd love it but I don't want to since the beginning is trash.
I'd like just one book where adultery, lust, fornication, or other likewise sins come up. I mean come on, I'm seventeen, I like to read and want a book that has good content. It's not like I have high standards! Sure the Bible talks about all of these sins but in all of the books I've read lately they have these sins just to have them. There is no reason for every book I read to have mentions of a sexual sin just to have mention of them.
I will give a real review on my blog after I am finished stewing over the mindset that everything comes down to sex and I have fallen in love with the characters and wonderful story that Mrs. Turano has shared.
"My dear, it has been my experience that God occasionally throws obstacles our way so that we're forced to grow into the people He wants us to be." (pg. 40)
Charming, hilarious and heartwarming! This is my first historical fiction book ever and it did not disappoint! This book follows heiress, Isadora Delafield, as she is forced to flee high society in disguise as a housekeeper to avoid a marriage to a dastardly duke. Her obvious mishaps as an inexperienced and questionable housekeeper was a constant source of comedic delight, as well as the colorful cast of characters on Glory Manor farm - including socialable cow, Buttercup, and aggressive chicken, Elmer. Ian and Izzie's romantic chemistry was natural and endearing, and the spiritual themes of selflessness and finding one's God-given purpose in life are seamlessly incorporated in the story and expertly conveyed in Ian and Izzie's character arcs. A story with depth, love and lots of laughs. This book was so much fun and I highly recommend it!
