A colony in the Taoan system sent a distress call, then went dead quiet. On Coriolis station, a rescue mission is hastily organized. It includes the former passenger liner Ghazali, as well as the players characters. During the portal jump to Taoan, something goes terribly wrong. The characters wake up to loud alarms on a mortally wounded ship. What has happened? And can the characters survive the Last Voyage of the Ghazali?
The artwork is, as usual, fantastic with Free League produced content. The scenario seems “fine”. It's not particularly evocative of Arabian Nights In Space that Coriolis is supposed to be going for but fits the bill for a generic starter scenario adapted to this system. I think some people will like it but it’s not my cup of tea, unfortunately.
It drives me nuts that they bill the scenario as free play, unguided scenario, and that you can arrange the scenes how you like, as literally when you follow the parts where it shows exactly what the players should take away from this scene and where to go next. It makes little sense if not progressed in a linear manner because of that. The fact that they can wander around before getting to these checkpoints that drive them to next sequence doesn't mean it's not a railroad.
I read it to see if I wanted to run it before Emissary Lost but decided not to. I don't think it adds much to the main campaign, which is, while still quite a railroad, more interesting than this--with a more interesting aesthetic and premise.
Not much strange or cool going on here - compare for example vs Alien RPG Chariot of the Gods. Also, no real flavour of the setting coming through. Most damning of all though is the sandbox presentation. 'You could do this or that,' with only brief notes just isn't enough. Act 3 is very poor on this count. I bought the scenario because I didn't want to have to do it all myself... Plus, as another reviewer rightly points out, there are logical steps that the scenario needs to go through. Finally, the maps are unimaginative and poorly presented. I will probably only use a summary of Acts 1 and 2 and get through this quickly to get everyone familiar with the rules. Hopefully Mercy of the Icons is better.
Last Voyage of the Ghazali is a deep scenario that is an introduction to the Mercy of the Icons campaign, and starts intertwining the players into the events that shape the metaplot of the Third Horizon.
Fantastic read, and it gives multiple option of how to resolve events in the scenario. It has some linear parts, but others are open to player ingenuity.
There is also some information on the Hamura system with story ideas, faction friction, points of the interest, and thought provoking ideas that allow for open adventuring as well.
