In Anabelle Bryant’s novel of unexpected romance, a lord and lady learn that not all emotions can be expressed in the light of day . . .
Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced, Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham, takes his position very seriously. Not only does it distract him from the painful aftermath of a gunshot wound to the leg, earned most honorably, it is important work. So he feels duty-bound to question esteemed scientist Lord Talbot about a suspect article. Matthew dashes from London to Oxfordshire, despite wretched weather that only exacerbates his injury, reminding him he is far from the dashing gentleman he once was . . .
Theodosia, Lord Talbot’s granddaughter, has inherited his gift for inquiry, enjoying her pursuits safely away from the artifice of London society. But her identity as the true author of Talbot’s article is about to be exposed. And if Matthew expects a dour bluestocking, surprises abound. Not only do Theodosia’s botanical concoctions soothe his leg, he’s clearly attracted by her delicate beauty. But dare she hope for more? It will take an urgent trip to London for both to discover how passion and lasting love can ignite under the cover of darkness . . .
Anabelle began reading at age three and never stopped. Her passion for reading soon turned into a passion for writing and an author was born. Happy to grab a suitcase if it ensures a new adventure, Anabelle finds endless inspiration in travel, especially imaginary jaunts into Regency England, a far cry from her home in New Jersey. Instead, her clever characters live out her daydreams because really, who wouldn't want to dance with a handsome duke or kiss a wicked earl?
Though teaching keeps her grounded, photography, running and writing, counterbalance her wanderlust. Often found with her nose in a book, Anabelle earned her Master's Degree and is completing her Doctorate Degree in education. Thrilled to be an author for Harlequin's Carina line, Anabelle's historical romances are character driven. She strives to provide a heartfelt connection between her hero, heroine, and the reader, believing the emotional journey on the path to true love is the most important bond. Clever secondary characters and lively conversation keep the pages turning.
I'm sorry, I just couldn't keep listening. How divided, the magic...
I fear alienating so many of my GR friends with this one, because I didn't like this book as much as seemingly everyone else did... ・ ・ ・ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕮⋆˚࿔✎𓂃 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 As usual another wonderful story from this author. A great addition to this series and full of adventure and tension. The characters were great , they fit together beautifully, and I can’t remember enjoying a plot so much , there was something very addictive to it . I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Theodosia and Matthew. Heroine is sort of mean to Matthew at first because she is trying to hide that she has been submitting scholar papers-not her grandfather. She also tried to hide her grandfather has dementia, and such but Matthew figured it out before they headed to London. Matthew has a leg that is in constant pain. Matthew appreciated her brain and body.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So I do not remember what Matthew did in book 1. I did read my review and it seems he was an asshat, but I still wrote that he needed a HEA. But that is the good thing, when I finally got to his book I had forgotten any bad feelings I might have had for him.
Matthew goes to visit an Earl since that Earl had written a paper and they could not, oh long story. Smart dude wants to talk with another smart dude. Instead he meets Thedosia, the real author.
Theo lives with her grandfather and speaks with animals more than humans. She is really smart in a time when women had no place for that.
Matthew is in constant pain (I have read a lot of books lately with men in constant pain from bullet holes, hmm, strange.)
They flirt. He has has his job in the city, she hates it (for a silly reason in the end) Oh and her granfather has dementia so there is that too.
And that is the drama folks.
And they work it out and live happily ever after. Nice story. I think the "baddie" was in book 1 too but I had forgotten him.
Narrator I like her voice for historical romance so she did really well
Can two scholars living in two different world with distinct background find a common base for a future together.
Mrs Anabelle Bryant with these two very clever and flawed characters has devised a brilliant and bright tale of choosing its true path.
Matthew, Earl of Whittingham has made his mission to ensue every published article in scientific publications must be ascertained. It is how he finds himself estranged in the country because of bad weather. He is a man who made with his impairment, what he has no more on the physical side, he has won with his intellectual pursuits. Thus he is no obtuse man and soon Theodosia intrigue him. She is so unlike the ladies he usually frequent, he fells irritably drawn to her. But they have both different agendas, so it is not meant to be. Sure, he first walked away but they had known each other for a couple of days, so nothing to lead to a change of life. But when they meet again, he was the first to realize there is more that chemistry between her. And once set on the path he must follow, he let nothing deter him from his goal. He is a kind and caring man, in spite of the mistakes he makes at time as he must temper his own requirements, he always let his needs seconding Theodosia’s first. He is man of grand gestures, and for a scholar, he acts as promptly as he thinks. And for the woman he loves, he will risk anything. Theodosia has known no other way than her life with her scientific grandfather in their quite isolated estate. Her sole foray outside of her confort zone was a failure, a feeling she is not ready to face again. She knows she is no ton lady, her upbringing gave her the freedom to carry on any area she wanted but set her apart too from the “demure” debutantes. Why she is concentrating on her scientific courses and her grandfather failing health. But Matthew’s arrival unsettles everything she has done lately. She first is suspicious of his presence, with right but once they clear his queries, new sentiments take place even if she knows nothing is to be expected. Their second chance encounter opens her to a glimpse of what could be but also of more heartaches to come as she is certain of only one thing, she won’t abandon her sole parent. They are matter of fact straightforward characters, they do some introspection but quickly peruse their own turmoil and once the truth of their sentiments known, there is no denial. They accept them. Up to them to decide if they must give themselves a chance or not.
I have been charmed by this lovely tale of two people who must choose what they are seeking for first, success or love. 4.5 stars
I was granted through Netgalley by the publisher Kensington/Zebra an advance copy, I have also purchased my own. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I was particularly taken with how well written this historical romance was. The author really captured the essence of this time period and the characters fit beautifully in this world. I admired Theodasia scientific mind and her quest to make a mark in the world. I was glad she found a partner in Matthew. That being said I did feel the story dragged a bit and the language too flowerly to a point where my mind was wandering. But despite that, I enjoyed it and would read more from this author.
Since a gunshot wound to the leg rendered many physical pursuits impossible for him, Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham, now sticks to scholarly achievement. He's the Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced in London and is responsible for verifying the validity of its scientific reporting. When an article from the Earl of Talbot, an esteemed scholar, raises heated debate, Matthew hies off to Talbot's home in Oxfordshire to investigate despite the snowy weather reminding him of how far he now is from the able gentleman he was.
Lord Talbot's granddaughter, Lady Theodosia, is interested in scholarly pursuits herself, content with her studies away from London society. Now it seems she's about to be revealed as the fraudulent author of Lord Talbot's latest articles despite her best efforts to misdirect Matthew.
With Matthew's stay extended by the snow and impossible travel conditions, he and Theodosia spend more time together and she begins to help him make herbal remedies for his leg, the attraction between them grows. Matthew's trip soon comes to an end, but the two reunite when Theodosia and her grandfather take an unplanned trip to London. Soon Theodosia and Matthew both realize how undeniable their passion is, even in the face of barriers that could keep them apart.
I loved Matthew. He was such a sweet, serious, terribly romantic hero. It made me sad for him every time Theodosia questioned his feelings. I wasn't the biggest fan of hers. Her constant insistence on worrying about everything, even unnecessarily, and on remaining alone was frustrating and slowed the pace of this romance considerably. The intimacies of Theodosia and Matthew's relationship occurred at an odd pace as well, but all came together for a satisfactory conclusion in the end. I loved how Matthew stepped up and was there for Theodosia and her grandfather once she finally allowed it and that just made me like him even more. I also loved the festive holiday feel of this one and it made me want to curl up with a hot drink and Christmas decorations.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Add another author to my auto-buy list. I thoroughly enjoyed this story by Anabelle Bryant and can't wait to dive into more of her books. Matthew and Theodosia are wonderfully complex characters, obviously made for one another. Bryant gives them intriguing layers, challenging obstacles, and heartrending baggage to overcome before skillfully guiding them to their happily ever after and I was with them every step of the way. I adored their banter, their intellect, and their slowly evolving passion. I appreciated the care and sensitivity the author used in depicting Theodosia's grandfather's debilitating disease while also showcasing the reality of the marked difference in how people react to those suffering from dementia and other similar conditions. There's one scene in particular where Matthew's behavior had me in tears - the good kind - and convinced me he was worthy of both Theodosia's love and mine.
Bryant's prose is beautiful and evocative, stealing my breath with its mental images and eliciting emotions with ease. Take this passage, during the time when Theodosia is fighting her deepening feelings for Matthew:
"First her parents, and now Grandfather. She couldn't bear to fall in love and be broken again. Loneliness didn't hurt nearly as much if nothing was at risk."
Or this one, during a visit to the British museum:
"Winter's distant sunlight poured through the high windows positioned near the crown molding. The noises surrounding them - discreet conversations and nearby footfalls - faded away. The moment became timeless, as if divinity entered the room, fragile and precious for its rarity."
Is it any wonder I'm looking forward to reading more Anabelle Bryant books?
London's Late Night Scandal is the third book in Bryant's Midnight Secrets series but stands on its own. Feel free to begin with Matthew and Theodosia's story. In the meantime, I'll be over in the corner, losing myself in the first two books of the series: London's Wicked Affair and London's Best Kept Secret.
4.5 stars *Advance copy received from publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I have to be honest, I was thinking about DNF-ing it most of the time.
I don’t know why is this happening to me for the last couple reads I got from NetGalley but I know for sure why this one didn’t work for me.
While it sounds exactly what I like to read (wounded hero, an intelligent heroine), this book focuses more on her worries over her grandfather than the romance itself.
I got the feeling that the author put quite a research into this story because everything was described into details. Everything.
There were some parts that didn’t intrigue me that much so I just skimmed the sentences.
The romance took around 10 % of the whole book. Maybe less. I like to be connected to the MCs, I like to see their relationship progress.
This book really didn’t suit me at all. I know the author probably took time with this book but it just didn’t work for me.
3 stars.
ARC provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and absolutely loved the main characters, Matthew and Theodosia! I really felt for Theodosia and what she goes through with her grandfather who has the onset of dementia because I'm going through the same thing with my elderly mother. I've learned that love and patience goes a long way!!
When they meet, Matthew is intrigued by Theodosia and soon learns that she has a brilliant mind and is very scientific, just like he is. She would rather be reading a science book than to attend a ball in London and is quite happy living in the countryside taking care of her grandfather. Matthew works and lives in London, although he's never cared for the ton and all the rules. When they fall in love, decisions need to be made and he has to convince her to take a chance. A truly wonderful love story and a truly beautiful ending that takes place at Christmas time:)
I was given an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham, is Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced. He has questions about a recently published article by the respected scientist, Earl Talbot. Despite a wounded leg he hies off to Oxfordshire when Lord Talbot grants him an interview. Matthew wants Talbot to come to London to take questions on his latest paper. Unfortunately the Lord's granddaughter, Lady Theodosia Leighton has her own very good reasons for stymieing such a meeting. Theodosia is a gifted reclusive woman, trained by her grandfather. She has written a scientific paper under the Talbot name. Things are certainly shaken up by Matthew's arrival. I liked Matthew and Theodosia as antagonists who can't help the sparks that ignite between them. I felt the reasons for Theodosia's withdrawal from society had so much more going for it than was represented. In the end her confrontations with her Finishing School persecutors seemed a bit tame. The whole problem around Lord Talbot's ongoing behaviour was handled and explained really well. Matthew wins high praise from me at least here. There was one loose end for me. I couldn't quite determine what the underlying problem was that governed Lord Kirkman's behaviour. Why is he driven to seek a wealthy wife? Given his desperate actions, I wanted more guideposts. All in all, I felt the tantalizing beginning did not really live up to its promise. Mind you, I did love that the scientifically bent Earl also believed in intuition—and just as well he did! A charming read!

I loved the wounded hero & the bluestocking , they complimented each other beautifully & it made for a lovely read My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I am addicted to Anabelle Bryant’s Midnight Secrets series. Her characters are vivid, true to life, and just so loveable. Their relationships evolve slowly with plenty of passion and wit, and even a little bit of intrigue. And there’s just something special about her writing style. Her beautiful and eloquent prose never fails to immediately ensnare me in her stories. I’ve devoured them all, but her newest, London’s Late Night Scandal, could very well be her best work yet. Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham valued his role as the chief officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced. He took his job seriously and when he questioned the validity of a recent article, he was anxious to verify the study. Especially as it was submitted by the renowned though reclusive Lord Talbott, a knowledgeable and meticulous man of science. As chief officer, Matthew was compelled to investigate and repudiate the claims made or get the earl to speak to his colleagues in London. And so began his mission of discovery and investigation. A quest for the truth in the most elemental form. But this mission proved more valuable than any of knowledge and fact. Once he arrived at Leighton Hall, he not only found the truth, he found his heart. Theodosia Leighton, granddaughter of esteemed scientist Lord Talbott, was extremely intelligent and obsessed with all things scientific. After the death of her parents, she’d been raised by her grandfather at Leighton Hall. She’d spent her life there in the country working alongside him and learning from him. When Lord Talbot began to decline, Theodosia submitted her own articles in her grandfather’s name. Both to protect his legacy and to prove her own worth. She never expected the persistent and annoying gentleman who’d beleaguered her with queries about those articles to show up on her doorstep. Just in time for a snowstorm, no less. And she certainly didn’t expect such a smart, strong, and far too charming gentleman either. Theo had lived an isolated existence for years and kept her emotions in check. But Matthew Strathmore had a way of touching on subjects she preferred to keep tucked away. He intruded on her solitude and brought to surface all her tightly held emotions and buried insecurities. With his appearance, her simple life was being upended. All because of one man. One gloriously attractive, smart, and charming man. With her lack of social polish and her unconventional preference for academics, she’d never fit in Matthew’s world. But she couldn’t deny he sparked her curiosity. And her desire. Was she brave enough to take a chance? I fell in love with Theodosia when she named the animals she nursed back to health. Anyone who has conversations with their pets is my kind of gal. In spite of the heartache she’d suffered and the responsibility she carried, she was beautiful, smart, kind, and funny. She put everything she had in to caring for her grandfather. Anyone who has ever taken on the role of caregiver knows how emotionally and physically draining it can be. But Theo was strong, patient, and calm. Just like her grandfather had been for her all her life. Everything she did was with him in mind. She was definitely unlike most society women. That unconventionality was what made her so wonderful. For Matthew, he found those qualities intoxicating. Matthew was hands down the best romantic hero ever. So charming and witty. He treated Theo as an equal and a friend. He admired and encouraged her academic pursuits. He even got turned on by her spouting random scientific facts during romantic moments. I adore his nickname, Bookish, for her and melted every time he used it. When he realized the weight Theo carried, he wanted to protect her, fix all the ills, and resolve all the problems. He wanted to replace painful memories with worthwhile ones. And he did that in some of the most romantic ways. Sleigh rides, trips to the Apothecaries Hall, the circus, and the museum. All the things he knew she’d love. And let me tell you, I never knew the museum could be so titillating! Matthew seemed to know just what Theo needed even when she didn’t. He pulled out all the stops in showing her there was no need to fear the future as long as they were together. In all honesty, I’ve never read a heroine more worthy of admiration or a more perfectly dreamy hero. As I said before, this is definitely one of Ms. Bryant’s best. A love story for the ages with passion that is to die for and some of the most romantic lines ever written. Yes, Matthew is absolutely swoon-worthy. Though part of a series, this book can easily be read as a stand -alone. Consider yourself warned though. Anabelle Bryant’s books will raise a spike in temperature and heartbeat. And an unquenchable need to read more. Her writing never fails to hit all the right notes and keep readers anticipating that next scene, knowing they’ll be swept off their feet. Her writing is exquisite. She writes those lines you linger over because they’re just that mesmerizing. Her books never fail to lift me up. They’re the kind you’ll never want to loan out but keep them for yourself so you can read them over and over. A true literary indulgence.
- Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review - The start of “London’s Late Night Scandal”, by Anabelle Bryant (Kensington Books/Zebra) really drew me in. It was lovely to have two leads who are scholars, and to watch how the hero’s erudite mind analyzes the heroine’s beautiful features with a fascination born both from the smitten man and the academic mind. Theodosia is a refreshingly unconventional heroine and Matthew, the wounded hero who falls for the gray-eyed beauty, is kind, charming and handsome. Unfortunately for me Matthew’s nerdy tendencies aren’t explored enough and even if his ailment is thoroughly described (meaning the author doesn’t forget he has some difficulties, as many authors often do), it doesn’t stop him from breezily carrying the heroine. For the most part the story was enjoyable, even tackling some serious issues as dementia, although I found myself skimming through parts of the London sightseeing, which seems well researched, the sex scenes or Kirkman’s involvement in the plot.
Another engaging addition to this intriguing series by Anabelle Bryant, who captures me every time with her brilliant storylines. I always have a special place in my heart for the wounded hero and the intelligent heroine and these two are perfect for each other! In this case the hero is brilliant as well, being the chief officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced and he was on a mission to talk to the elusive Lord Talbott. An article the renowned man had written was being questioned as to it's validity and he felt compelled to challenge some of the claims made. Well, he found a lot more than he expected when he arrived at Lord Talbott's home. Theodosia Leighton was the great scientist's grandaughter and just as intelligent and obsessed with all subjects pertaining to science. But Theo had started to see her grandfather grow ill and had begun to submit articles and papers in his name to keep up his legacy. Plus it showed her intelligence, even though she had lived isolated for years. She was in no way like the women in society. Theo became one of my favorite heroines with her strong love and care for her grandfather that branched out to animals and others. She had endured a lot. Matthew was a sigh worthy hero that captured my heart. Kind, funny, intelligent and so romantic! This is one of my favorite stories this year and I highly recommend it. Don't miss the others in this series either... My heart smiles.
London's Late Night Scandal by Anabelle Bryant is book three in the Midnight Secrets Series. This is the story of Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham and Theodosia. I have read (and Loved!) the previous books but feel you could make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Matthew is the Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced when goes to investigate a article written by Lord Talbot a Scientist but whit some questionable calculations. This has him on a trip to the country that ends up aggravating his gun shot wound from a earlier time. When he finally arrives he meets Theodosia who ends up helping him with his pain but he soon starts to learn something else she being doing. Theodosia has inherited her Grandfather's knowledge and when her Grandfather ended up with dementia it brought her into doing her own articles...which of course leads to Matthew. Loved their story.
This is the book I’ve waited for. Matthews and Theodosias story. I certainly was not disappointed. Anabelle Bryant is an auto buy for me. Matthew is a lonely intellectual and Thea is a mystery to Matthew from the start. The attraction between them sizzles from the pages. Their story kept me turning pages until the early morning. It is a wonderful love story. The characters were delightful. Secondary characters were wonderful as well. I can’t say enough how much I loved this book. I highly recommend this book and would give it more than five stars if I could. I was gifted this book from the author and NetGalley and my opinions are my own.
Here comes the white horse…this is one of the most romantic stories I have read in a while. It is sweet, intelligent, swoon-worthy and a little bit sexy. Matthew is definitely a knight in shining armor. Yep, love the scarred heroes. This story has two very intelligent main characters which I really liked and thought they worked well in this story. Matthew and Theodosia are lovely characters who deserve a HEA and definitely get it.
Psst…Kirkman is not so bad and I would love to see him as a hero in another story.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Theodosia and Matthew’s characters are so well defined by the author that they come alive on the pages. Theo and Matt are the perfect couple, even if she doesn’t want to change her circumstances. I like their banter and the fact that even if her theories can’t be proven He doesn’t condescend or think less of her. The heartbreaking reality of dementia is wonderfully portrayed. Ms. Bryant doesn’t disappoint and this book, which can stand alone, is another good story in this series.

Wonderful book to keep you up reading until the wee hours of the morning. Ms Bryant's style of writing is engaging and so descriptive you can see every scene in your mind's eye easily. I "read" this as an audio book, and enjoyed the narrator, Victoria Aston, very much. Highly recommend.
London’s Late Night Scandal⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ By Anabelle Bryant
This is the third book in the Midnight Secret Series and I have read all three much to my delight.
Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham, suffered a debilitating injury in his knee and has been somewhat limited in his pursuits. As Chief officer of the Society of Intellectual Advance it is his job to verify if articles published by the group are correct. When Matthew discovers an anomaly in a recent article published by the renowned Lord Talbott he must investigate. Matthew sets himself on the long arduous trip to Leighton Hall home of Lord Talbott. It is at Leighton Matthew meets Theodosia granddaughter of the Lord. Matthew observes how protective Theodosia is of her grandfather and although he was invited to visit feels like an intruder. As Matthew digs deeper into this family dynamic he sees more than he bargained for. Ms Bryant addresses several situations in this book. True a love story emerges but true family too emerges. Family is not just blood but loyal people surrounding this needy twosome. Dementia is addressed as well as the caregiver. Her hero is made of the true stuff and in for the duration. I loved this book.
I think it's cute Matthew can get flustered at times, “we should . . .” He faltered. “Would you like to go to the gallery? The Elgin Marbles are a rare gift to behold.” The man could get cheeky at times, “if that’s your idea of a good night kiss, then I suggest you prepare for mine.” The words rasped out, his body caught in a state of agonizing pleasure." I liked this book, I liked Matthew.
London's Late Night Scandal by Anabelle Bryant is perfect. I love how the author takes two characters, the Earl of Whittingham, Matthew Strathmore, and Lady Theodosia Leighton, the granddaughter of the Earl of Talbot, whom both lack certain graces the ton would not approve of, and tell their story.
I remember the Earl of Whittingham giving his sister the devil of a time about getting married, and he chose to just marry her off to anyone, no matter if it was a love match or not! Of course we all know how well that worked, and so now we have Matthew and Theodosia's story.
Theodosia lost her parents at the age of five to a horrific fire that claimed their lives. For twenty years now she has lived with her grandfather, who rescued her from the fire. Getting on in years. her grandfather is now suffering from dementia, and Theodosia, along with her staff take very good care of him. Theodosia has no interest in leaving him alone in his twilight years, and she has gotten used to the upside down life of a loved one with dementia, and how best to care for him.
Unknown to her grandfather, Theodosia has submitted several papers to the Journal of Science and her latest document seems subject to closer inspection by the The Society for the Intellectually Advanced. This is how Matthew comes into the story. He is the Chief of this Society and its up to him to make sure all articles are based on and proved scientifically. The paper has been hotly debated so thinking that the Earl of Talbot wrote this, he sends a few letters of inquiry that Theodosia just tossed. One day while she is sick, the staff brings the mail to her Grandfather and after reading yet another letter, promptly sends out word for the Earl of Whittington to visit!
When Matthew shows up at the door, she is instantly panicked, her Grandfather knows nothing of her articles to the journal for the last year or so, and now she doesn't know what to do with Matthew's visit. However since her grandfather invited him, he is welcomed and is given a room and this is Matthew and Theodosia get to know a little bit about each other and after having dinner with the Earl of Talbot, it isn't long for him to realize what has been going on. He says nothing!
Theodosia, never knowing the feeling of love starts feeling all kinds of 'unexplained thoughts and feelings' and so does Matthew! They are enamored of each other but are both too stubborn to admit it. When Matthew leaves a couple of days later, he starts examining his feelings for Theodosia also known as Bookish, a nickname Matthew gives her!
Theodosia and her Grandfather come to London to see a specialist about Lord Talbot's health about a month or so later and it is there that they further their friendship, and Matthew spends a lot of time with Theodosia escorting her around London. When Theodosia goes home, she knows she really loves Matthew, but does not tell him as she feels their lives would not work out together, with Matthew in London and Theodosia with her grandfather in Oxfordshire seven long hours away.
It takes an extraordinary man to do what Matthew does after this; he knows he has finally fallen in love and he plans to prove it to Theodosia! He decides he will not let love pass him by.
I don't want to say any more -you will have to read on, but you don't want to miss out on this wonderful book. There are so many special moments, so much angst in these characters lives, a book so well written you will want to read more by this author! I know this for a fact because I read one of her books-volume four, out of sync in a different series and loved it so much I went back and read all of her books!
I gave this book 5 stars and impatiently await more from this author! Anabelle Bryant is an automatic one click on my reading list!
A beguiling and seductive historical romance that sizzles with passion, drama, humor and heart, London’s Late Night Scandal brings to a close Anabelle Bryant’s sensational Midnight Secrets series. A captivating romance that draws you in from the very first chapter, London’s Late Night Scandal is another must-read by this talented storyteller.
Lady Theodosia Talbot is as far removed from a typical Regency miss as it is possible to get. While other girls of similar age and station occupy their minds with banal trivialities like balls, parties and routs, Theodosia is keen to put as much distance between herself and London as she possibly can and is perfectly content to bury herself in the countryside tending to her aged grandfather and dedicating herself completely to scientific endeavor. Having inherited her grandfather’s gift for inquiry and his passion for science, Theodosia’s days are spent with her nose in a book – and she couldn’t be happier. Her life in the country and her grandfather’s standing in the scientific community has allowed her to fully indulge in her passion and to submit and publish articles in prestigious journals using her grandfather’s name. Theodosia is sure that nobody is going to discover her secret – until Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham turns up on her doorstep wanting to speak to the writer of the articles he is keen to discuss and repudiate!
As Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced, Matthew takes his job extremely seriously. Not only does his position provide him with plenty of distraction from a gun shot wound sustained to his leg in battle, but it is also work which he is immensely proud of. Matthew is proud of the society’s standing in the scientific community – which is why he is absolutely baffled when he reads Lord Talbot’s latest article which is riddled with shocking inaccuracies and irresponsible claims. Setting off from London to Lord Talbot’s house, Matthew thinks he is going to be spending a couple of days with an irascible and fusty scientist – only nobody told him that Lord Talbot had a beautiful and intelligent granddaughter who takes the wind out of his sails!
Theodosia cannot risk her secret coming out. She has built a perfectly good life for herself and she certainly does not want Matthew to ask too many questions or upset her grandfather – who is unaware of Theodosia’s quiet life. Yet, the more time she spends with Matthew, the more she finds herself drawn to him. While Matthew is the most good-looking man she has ever clapped eyes on, there is more to him than good looks. He is charming, smart and has made her feel things she has never experienced before. But could a man like Matthew, who has the world at his feet, possibly ever even contemplate the possibility of a future with her? Theodosia knows that Matthew could never reciprocate her feelings, but fate might just end up surprising her…
Will Matthew be able to prove to Theodosia that she is the one for him? As Theodosia finds herself leaving the safety of her home behind for the bright city lights, will she realize that an unexpected late night scandal could give way to the love of a lifetime with the only man who could ever make her happy?
Wonderfully romantic, immensely emotional and a joy to read from start to finish, London’s Late Night Scandal is a fantastic Regency tale which is hard to resist and impossible to put down. As always, Anabelle Bryant writes with great verve and gusto and has written a dramatic, compelling and dazzling romance I simply did not want to end. Theodosia and Matthew are two brilliantly drawn and richly nuanced characters you will cheer for as they are intelligent, believable and relatable.
A spellbinding read from a terrific talent, London’s Late Night Scandal is an engrossing Regency romance fans of the genre are simply going to love!
London's Late Night Scandal is the third book in Anabelle Bryant's Midnight Secrets series. It stands alone perfectly well if you haven't read the others. Though the last book was entertaining, I was a bit disappointed in the storyline; there were just too many secrets there. This story, however, did not disappoint at all! It started off a bit slowly, but once it built up momentum I was carried away by this clever novel.
Lord Matthew Strathmore, the Earl of Whittingham, is the Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced. Sounds stuffy and pretentious, doesn't it? Though Matthew appears stuffy at first, apparently he isn't, as there seems to be a bit of a bad boy past that caused him to be shot in the knee. Matthew heads to Oxfordshire to meet with Lord Talbot, a scientist who submitted a suspect article of research that cannot be duplicated. When he arrives, he meets Theodosia, Talbot's granddaughter. It appears she is also of a scientific bent, and he begins to suspect that she, and not Talbot, submitted the article.
It was, simply put, a lovely romance between Matthew and Theodosia. Though they were quickly attracted to each other, Matthew first became the caring and considerate friend she desperately needed. I loved his nickname for Theodosia: Bookish. He was not threatened by an extremely smart woman, either, which made him even more attractive. Bookish, besides being wickedly smart, was a kind and caring soul. She cared for her wounded animals (William Snakespeare, Isaac Newt and Catpernicus...hehe) with the same love she showed her beloved grandfather. The issue of dementia in the elderly was extremely well handled here; it was realistic and heartbreaking. Add in a bit of suspense (just why did her best friend NEED to marry her?), and you have a most engaging and satisfying story.
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
This book had all the fixings for a lovely historical romance: injured hero, forced proximity, mutually intelligent characters, self enforced isolation…
The story starts out with the illustrious, but damaged Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced, Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham on a breakneck speed trip to Oxfordshire. He had finally received an invitation from the reclusive Lord Talbot. Talbot’s scientific work of late has drawn the attention of the society and Matthew is eager to find answers to his scientific questions and prove himself worthier of his position as Chief Officer. Sadly, upon arrival things don’t go as planned… he meets Lord Talbot’s beautiful and intelligent granddaughter, Lady Theodosia and ends up with more questions than answers.
Lady Theodosia has lived a quiet life in Oxfordshire with her grandfather ever since loosing her parents to a hours fire as a child. Her grandfather not only raised her, but had her follow in his scientific studies. Now as a young woman she is content to remain in her grandfathers house studying the sciences and taking care of her aging guardian. He has done so much for her, the least she can do is take care of him now that old age is taking its toll… besides where would she go? Oxfordshire is hame and her brief experience in London has shown her that she doesn’t belong there. All is going well until a winter snowstorm brings in the Earl of Whittingham who seems determined to discover her secrets and upend her peaceful existence.
This was a delightful read. I enjoyed both of the main characters and the addition of the ailing grandfather, Lord Talbot was respectfully done. A delightful read altogether.
The third and final book in the Midnight Secrets trilogy , London's Late Night Scandal by Anabelle Bryant was released September 24th, 2019.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Zebra Romance and Kensington Press through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
LONDON’S LATE NIGHT SCANDAL gives us an intellectual couple who are meant for each other in so many ways – they simply have to set aside a few beginning roadblocks to see that clearly. Matthew and Theodosia love science, the intensity of making new discoveries. Yet Matthew is in for a few surprises when he sets out from London during the winter season to investigate some points in Theodosia’s grandfather’s most recent papers – only to make a few discoveries of his own along the way.
I love a detailed story, it makes the location, the surroundings, the characters come alive for me and Anabelle Bryant has exceeded at creating a world rich with detail and characters that don’t always act as society demands. Both Theo and Matthew are intriguing people who definitely are attracted to each other yet aren’t entirely certain that they can “fit” in each other’s worlds. I loved Theo’s grandfather, and without giving much away, I think you’ll enjoy encountering him as well. Life isn’t always fair, but those loved ones in our lives try their best to make life well worth living every single day.
LONDON’S LATE NIGHT SCANDAL is intriguing, a lovely Romance with realistic touches that will engage your emotions. I liked this couple, even more so when they allowed the attraction, the passion between them to ignite. If you’re in the mood for a Historical Romance that will touch your heart, engage your emotions, bring you an unusual couple and a very good story then you’ll want to pick up the third story in the Midnight Secrets series as soon as it releases. I had such a good time with Theo and Matthew – and I believe you will as well.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
There’s so much about this next release that hits all the marks for a great historical read. Amazing in-depth physical descriptions of characters, scenes, and objects, bring everything to life for the reader. And what can be better than a wintry, country backdrop for the setting of this tale, with a little holiday spirit to put it over the top.
The hero, Lord Matthew Strathmore, is a handsome but stodgy Earl, Chief Officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced. He’s bent on investigating the questionable theories put forth by the author of an article in their journal, and not even an old painful leg injury or the despicable weather conditions will keep him from his travels from London to the snow covered acreage of Oxfordshire. Upon arrival he soon discovers nothing is as he expects. His well ordered plans will be met with bumps and distractions in the form of one beautiful and highly intelligent blue stocking.
As a young girl, Theodosia has experienced the biting judgement and meanness of the London ton and vows never to return. Growing up with the love and influence of her grandfather, Lord Talbot, Theodosia is content to surround herself with her scientific pursuits and experiments within her home, Leighton House, in Oxfordshire. When her sanctuary is invaded by this interesting but overbearing lord, sparks of various forms begin to ignite.
I loved how Matthew and Theodosia’s unexpected connection progressed with just the right mix of conflict, humor, desire and romance. Lots of romance. *sigh*
I received a printed arc for an honest opinion, but have also pre-ordered for my kindle collection. Whatever format you require, you don’t want to pass on this one. Check it out and see what happens with this captivating match-up. Sure to be another hit in this awesome series from Anabelle Bryant.
As always, Anabelle Bryant’s latest book, lives up to the dreamy covers and what promises to lie within the covers. The third book ‘London’s Late Night Scandal’ in the Midnight Secrets series is every bit as good as the previous books. Whilst it refers to other characters who again appear in this book, this is a standalone book. Lord Matthew Strathmore, Earl of Whittingham is so determined in his role as the chief officer of the Society for the Intellectually Advanced, that he is desperate to speak to Lord Talbott on his quest for an element and on receival of an invitation, quickly makes the journey to Leighton Hall. However, he is immediately captivated by Lord Talbot’s granddaughter, Theodosia Leighton, who has an amazing scientific mind. Having been raised by her grandfather since the death of her parents, she has had the freedom to study and learn from him. Yet she soon realises that Matthew, will discover that she has written the article that he is interested in and will uncover the fact, that her grandfather is suffering from dementia. Both Theodosia and Matthew were such beautifully written characters. Whilst Theodosia, is clever and kind, her vulnerability is there for all to see. Her love for her grandfather is quite admirable but not done in a manner to make her appear to self-sacrificing. However, Matthew as the true hero. I loved his nickname for Theodosia - ‘Bookish’ and everything that he does for her, he does with such gentleness and respect. Their feelings for each other were evident from the beginning of the relationship, without any falsehoods. This was a story that had me smiling from the start, despite the sad undertones from Lord Talbot’s illness. This is a story to savour, written with such elegant prose. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
