Heart of the Mountains #6

This Daring Journey

Rate this book

The only hope to keep her newborn baby alive is to reach the safety of her Indian people… This mountain man is the last person she should trust to get her there.

As a half-Indian raised among her Peigan tribe, Moriah Clark knows better than to trust white people. The tragedy that resulted in her birth is proof enough. But when her trusted grandfather marries her to a white man, she has no choice but to obey and hope this new life isn’t her downfall. Her white husband turns out to be a decent sort, but his unexpected death left her to birth a newborn baby among hostile mountain men. She wants nothing more than to retreat to the safe haven of her tribal upbringing. When a mysterious frontiersman arrives on her doorstep seeking her deceased husband, his offer to escort her and the babe to her people seems like the opportunity she’s been praying to find. But can she trust him?

Samuel Grant has been sent to retrieve Henry Clark for his sister’s wedding, but the sight that greets him at the little cabin in the woods is not what he expected. Not only has the man died, but Henry’s wife is fighting off an aggressive gang of men at gunpoint—while trying to conceal a newborn. He can’t leave the pair unattended, so helping her travel into the mountain country to reach her family seems like the only option. If he can win her trust, that is.

Such a grueling journey with a three-week-old baby will be risky, but the challenges that arise test them far more than either expected. When a devastating surprise increases the danger ten-fold, Moriah focuses all her efforts on keeping her newborn daughter alive. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t realize how much of her heart belongs to the mountain man—until it’s too late.

Misty Beller yet again succeeds in captivating and enchanting with her beautiful redemptive love story set in the backdrop of wintery harshness of the Canadian mountains. Her previous five books in the Heart of the Mountains series all have similar setting but it never gets old; there is so much beauty and danger in the mountains during the winter and the struggle of the main characters to survive is real, tangible, and heart-wrenching at times. The story has a nicely paced plot, endearing characters, and spiritual growth and affirmation in both Moriah and Samuel. This is book 6 in the series but it can be read as a stand-alone (but I highly recommend reading all the books in the series since the Grant family is so lovable!).
Moriah is a recent widow, fighting to keep her newborn and herself alive. She’s resourceful, formidable, and determined yet has self-doubts due to her half-Indian heritage. Samuel is loyal, kind, steadfast, and tender yet he himself has self-doubts from all his perceived failures. Samuel arrives to fetch Moriah and her family for her husband’s sister’s wedding, not realizing the husband is dead. Thus begins their journey into the wilderness of Canada. If you enjoy well-written historical romance, you will totally love this book (and the entire series!).

Samuel Grant is on his way to get Henry Clark and bring him back for his sister's wedding, but when he gets to Henry's cabin, there is a ruckus going on. A woman is holed up inside and men out front are aggressively trying to take the cabin. Then Samuel hears a baby crying.

Moriah Clark's husband has died 6 months previously, leaving her with a newborn and a cabin and land to maintain. She is half Peigan and just wants to get back to her people, after being given to a white man in marriage by her grandfather. When Samuel Grant rescues her from the men trying to take her home, she reluctantly agrees to allow him to take her back to her family's camping grounds.

Thus begins a treacherous, dangerous journey, and having a three week old infant is not easy on any of them. Moriah is concerned with keeping her baby alive and not relying on this frontiersman any more than she has to. When she gets back to her tribe, everything will be fine. Or will it?

Misty Beller adds another compelling story to her Heart of the Mountains series. She brings these characters and their plight to life in a wonderful way. I enjoyed it very much. Recommended.

I can't imagine traveling in the rugged untamed wilderness on the cusp of winter with a brand new baby! Moriah had so much fortitude to leave behind the home she built with her husband and seek out her mother's people. I came to like Samuel in the previous book that focused on his twin, so it was wonderful to read his story and see him be the hero to Moriah and her baby girl. They are strong together and over time she learns to trust him by witnessing his actions and manner that reflect his inner goodness. The journey is treacherous of course, and they pass through and overcome a variety of trials and obstacles, picking up a Native boy along the way who brings another dynamic to their small group. I love the adventure and sweet romance in this series!

What a beautiful, heartfelt journey these characters were on! This is book six in the Heart of the Mountains series, yet it could be read on its own, as well. The previous book, This Homeward Journey, would be a good one to read right before This Daring Journey, as Samuel Grant appears in both novels.

I loved the connection that developed between not only Samuel and Moriah, but also between Samuel and baby Cherry. Samuel’s character and gentleness came shining through in the way he cared for Moriah and her child.

The rugged, dangerous land that these characters had to journey across came to life within these pages. It was easy to imagine the frigid temperatures and desolate beauty as their party trekked toward the hope of reaching family. I loved this story from start to finish!

4.5 Stars. This Daring Journey is book 6 in the Heart of the Mountains series, but the first that I have read. I very much enjoyed this book and had no issues following this story. It can definitely be read as a standalone.

Moriah Clark's husband has been dead for 6 months. He died without knowing his daughter. She has been left alone with a cabin that is constantly being set upon by squatters and she needs to protect it for herself and her newborn daughter Cherry. That is how Samuel Grant finds her when he arrives at the cabin looking for Henry Grant. Driving off the interlopers, he meets Moriah who explains to him that she wants to get back to her people. She is half Peigan and does not feel at home where she is. Samuel wants to escort them to ensure they are safe and she reluctantly agrees to allow him to take her back to her family's camping grounds. Thus begins a treacherous journey, with a three week old infant, through the Canadian Mountains in the winter.

I really liked the characters in the story. Moriah is resourceful, formidable, and determined yet has self-doubts due to her half-Indian heritage. Samuel is loyal, kind, steadfast, and tender yet he himself has self-doubts from all his perceived failures. Matisse, the teenager they meet along the way has his own issues, having been abandoned at the age of two, this young half Peigan was rescued by a white trapper who raised and trained him to survive in the wilds. With his death, Matisse also wants to return to his people. He is extremely helpful to have around the camp and even knows a bit about healing. Baby Cherry is a bright spot in this tale. She is just a sweet little one, who Samuel starts calling Little Bit, yet manages to charm this big, strong man. The setting is amazing. The harshness of winter in the mountains adds to the struggle of the characters, with them needing to survive many obstacles. With faith, determination and intelligence they work together to deal with the realities of their journey. The story has a nicely paced plot, with spiritual growth and affirmation in both Moriah and Samuel. As their relationship changes, they both maintain respect for themselves, one another and God. A beautiful story of second chances and redemption. I do recommend this one. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit Blog Tours upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Misty Beller was a new author for me whenI reviewed the first book in this series and I fell in love with her writing! And this 6th book in the Heart of the Mountain Series in my favorite on yet! Moriah Grant has been living in her cabin with her newborn baby for months after her husband passed away, but how much more can she take of these horrible mountain men trying to take her home. When Samuel Grant arrives with a message for her husband from his sister, Moriah decides she can trust him to help her and her newborn baby.

I love, love this story set in the Canadian Winter Wilderness. Misty Beller creates another cast of characters that quickly find their way into my heart very early in the story. Moriah is a determined woman ready to take on whatever she needs to do to survive. Samuel Grant wants nothing more than to help Moriah and her baby journey their way through the harsh wilderness to find her family. Even though the trip through the cold snowy wearther was harsh, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey with Samuel, Moriah and Cherry! I love the tender way Samuel was with Cherry, he had her spoiled after a few days. I also love the interaction between Samuel and Moriah. Even though they’ve couldn’t see it, or wouldn’t admit it, I could see early on that they were formig an attraction to each other.

There is so much going on in this book, but the plot always flows nicely and Ms. Beller kept on the edge of my seat most of the time and I could put the book down. In fact it took me less than a day to read “This Daring Journey!” Another thing I like an appreciate is how the author weaves the Christian life into her characters. By the end of the story, I feel like Moriah and Samuel are my friends, and it feels like I’m living the story with them! I highly recommend this book!

Moriah is the perfect combination of fiery and vulnerable and she’s a great match for the quiet, patient, and protective Samuel. Moriah takes motherhood to a truly fierce level. She is seriously one boss mama! Samuel is chivalry personified and his physical endurance is truly impressive! Moriah’s inspiring bravery and fledgling faith blossom and grow in the safety of Samuel’s steadfastness and encouragement. I love indulging in these mountain stories over and over again.

This is book 6 in the Heart of the Mountains series and this book picks up directly after book 5 where we are on the journey with Samuel Grant. He is in search for his soon to be sister in law, Rachel's brother Henry Clark. He happens upon a cabin in the woods which he is guessing belongs to said Henry but there are men there and he can tell they are up to no good. Once he discovers it is a woman they are trying to gain access to he comes to her rescue.

Moriah Clark has been on her own for a while and has prayed for help. Could this man be who God sent to help her back to her people? Moriah and Samuel along with Moriah's young daughter Cherry, begin their journey in the cold wilderness. They have trouble along the way as well as learn to trust and love one another. To survive in this wilderness you must learn trust in both God and the man you are falling for.

This story is so inspiring. I felt for Moriah, I loved Samuel and was so happy we get to visit with the entire Grant family again and see how a families love can conquer all. We also get a new person to love along the way. I love how this author gives us such details that you feel like you are there with the characters and can see what they see and feel what they are feeling. That is talent to take you there without pictures.

I received an early copy to read and review and give my honest opinion. I loved this book. I highly recommend it as well as all the others in this series. You do not have to read the others first to enjoy this story but they are all so good you will want to.

THIS DARING JOURNEY is the story of a woman who has learned to survive on her own as she cares and protects her baby and the man who comes and helps her journey to find her family. A story full of sweet moments between the characters, the dangers they face, the friendships they forge, and their faith in God woven through. A heartwarming and inspiring historical romance.

I love this series with its strong women and trustworthy men! Moriah and Samuel were both characters I loved! Moriah was fierce, protective, beautiful, and intelligent. I loved how Samuel first comes upon her protecting her baby and speaking in three languages. Samuel was also protective, smart, loyal, and dependable, which Moriah needs. The other characters were also easy to like and I especially fell in love with Matisse and his quiet strength as well as adorable Cherry.

I really appreciated how the romance develops in this story. I liked how it starts small... from strangers to friends, then to attraction and feelings that they both fight but can't help as they travel and work together. Their relationship then turns to deeply caring about each other. It made sense and worked for me. I also enjoyed the inspirational elements of the story. They didn't feel forced or pushy, but natural to the characters and their situations.

My one issue with the story was that I felt Moriah lost a little of her distinctive character as the story progressed. I felt like the half Peigan side of her kind of got lost as the journey went on. She's still fierce, as any woman who had been what she'd been through and was protecting a baby would be, but the stilted English and other mannerisms seemed to fade and I wanted them to still remain a strong part of her character. Those types of details make a story more unique and characters more rich and full - as well as more genuine.

In the end, was it what I wished for? An enjoyable, heartfelt, sweet read from beginning to end with some intense moments of danger and romance. Another great addition to this series and recommended to inspirational historical romance readers. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book!

How can he safely lead the woman and her newborn to her people?

My rating is 4.5 stars

Imagine traveling on a multiple day journey through the wilderness. In the Canadian Rockies. In the cold. With a newborn and a man you had never met. . . Without a map or GPS, and on an unmarked route!

This Daring Journey chronicles Moriah’s journey back to her people after the death of her husband. This amazing French-Indian woman had a strength and determination not often seen. The story of her tragic birth was hinted at enough to give the sense of what had happened and yet it wasn’t explained. I appreciated that the author knew that she didn’t need to go into more details than she did.

Samuel, who we met in This Homeward Journey, was determined to help this strong, yet fragile woman on her journey. I loved his protective nature and the way that he fell so quickly and completely in love with Cherry, the newborn.

I really like the way Misty Beller gives such a sense of place in her books. The details of the surroundings, the frigid temperatures, and the perils of the journey seemed very real.

Despite the dangers of the journey and the developing romance, a few parts seemed to drag a little.

I recommend this for lovers of historical fiction who do not require high action or intrigue to keep them interested.

This Daring Journey is the sixth book in the Heart of the Mountains series by Misty M. Beller. Although it continues the story of Samuel Grant from the previous book, it is easily read as a stand-alone book as the author does a great job filling in enough of the backstory the reader does not have a lot of questions regarding what has gone on before. It is a beautiful and captivating story of unexpected love, the importance of being able to trust family and friends (and sometimes strangers) and as the title suggests a daring journey through the wintry Canadian mountains during the mid-1800s. The writing style is graceful and flows smoothly as the author tells the story of a young widow, Moriah, and Samuel traveling through the mountains to find Moriah's family. The author has beautifully crafted her characters, Moriah, strong and full of spunk and determination. Samuel, a rugged man of the mountains and yet with a tender heart who cared, provided and protected those he loved. I enjoyed watching the relationship between Moriah and Samuel morph and change throughout the story as they encountered so many struggles, harrowing struggles--illness, fire, wild animals, and so much more. Moriah trusted few men, especially white men. Could she trust Samuel to safely lead her and her newborn to find her family? Strong characters that are so likable, realistic situations, wonderfully descriptive scenes all work together for a delightful story and threaded throughout the book is a faith in God--the God who alone can fix situations as we are not strong enough to do so. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Beller's books.

If you haven't read any books in this series, I would highly recommend taking the time to read each one. The story is full of adventure and danger as we get to follow Samuel on his journey. He is a strong character with survival instincts which come in handy as he faces trying to save Moriah and her new born baby. I loved how the author incorporated Moriah's heritage and found it to be fascinating.

Moriah feels all alone in the world after her husband dies. She is a strong person and will do anything to protect her baby. Samuel and Moriah take off on a journey to reunite her with her people. They are in for some danger as they encounter wildlife, storms and caring for a new born on the trail. I could feel the determination in Moriah as she has to learn to trust God. It must have been hard for her to travel with a stranger but she knew if she stayed where she was, her and her baby Cherry would not survive. Samuel must show Moriah that he can be trusted and I really liked how he helped out with the baby when Moriah became ill.

The author has done an excellent job of making readers feel like they are on the journey as she describes vivid accounts of the wilderness . Their shelters along the way are just enough to help keep everyone relatively warm at night. I can't imagine traveling with a new born in the wilderness and thought at times it was getting to Moriah. She tried so hard to hide her fatigue but Samuel soon discovers that she is ill and steps in to tend to the baby as much as he can.

The story kept my attention and I loved reading how Samuel was such a respectable man. His drive to get Moriah somewhere safe was admirable. I like camping but I would never last out in the cold weather that Samuel and Moriah encountered. At some point I think I would give up and go home. They had no choice but to travel on hoping to reach their destination soon.

I know if you like historical fiction, you will fall in love with this story filled with adventure, faith, trust and finding your way home.

Can she trust him with their lives?

It's a bit hard to believe that I am almost done with the Heart Of The Mountains series from Misty M. Beller. This Daring Journey is the sixth book out of seven and I'll admit that that I'll be a bit sorry to say goodbye to the extended Grant family when I do 'read' the last one. I say 'read' because I have actually been listening to the entire series in audiobook.

This Daring Journey was much like its predecessors with a small manageable cast of characters and a dangerous journey through the mountains. There really weren't very many surprises but I was perfectly OK with that. I liked the chance to get to know the characters a little better and to enjoy the wilderness winter setting.

I just have to say how much I enjoy the narrator for this series. Leonor A. Woodworth has the perfect voice for historical romance, it's so easy to listen to her for hours, and she really brings Misty M. Beller's characters to life. If you enjoy uncomplicated historical romance and audiobooks you should check out the Heart Of The Mountains series. Each book is standalone, though loosely connected, so it isn't hard to pick it up anywhere and read or listen.

I have read all the books in this Heart of the Mountains series, and I think This Daring Journey may be her best so far. There are plenty of obstacles to thwart Moriah Clark and Samuel Grant as they journey together through the harsh winter landscape in search of family. Loss and trust both play major roles in the tale. How will this new mother and her baby survive the winter elements and the dangers of the wilderness? The author crafts characters well and places them in exciting adventures, which tests their skills and endurance. The drama portrayed on the page comes to life for readers as they journey alongside the courageous characters. Each novel stands alone, but there are some overlapping characters and connections in the stories. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

The next installment in the series and as good as the rest. In this book. Samuel meets Moriah, Henry's wife, when he goes to their cabin to get him to attend his sister's upcoming wedding. Circumstances, aren't what he expects, and he ends up taking Morah and her infant daughter into the winter wilderness to find her Indian tribe.

Along the way, they encounter unforeseen hardship and their paths cross with a young boy who becomes a traveling companion. Fighting the elements, an accident, sickness and the strain of relationships, they each manage to finally trust each other. Both, relying on God's help and strength.

A wonderful addition to the series filled with new acceptance, trust, and love. Highly recommended.

This was my first book that I read by Misty Beller and oh, what a lovely little gem was this! I was immediately captivated and held hostage to the very end! I read it without difficulty as a stand-alone, however I enjoyed Misty's writing so much that I wish I had started at the beginning. Looking back at the descriptions of the other books in the series, the main characters shift to different people, so it wasn't as difficult to jump-in later in the series. Having said that though, even though my TBR is incredibly high right now, I fully plan on going back to the beginning and hopefully reading through the rest.

This is a story that would appeal to historical fiction and survivalist fans alike. After Samuel finds Moriah and her newborn baby Cherry, they embark on a journey of twists and turns neither could have expected. The longer they travel, the closer they become. When one faces trouble the other is quick to help. Their mutual concern along with steadfast perseverance helps them battle the elements and illnesses that come their way.

At less than 300 pages I consider this a shorter read, but there was still a full story that didn't feel rushed or incomplete. I found it both engaging and realistic. It has led me to add the rest of the books in the series to my TBR and I fully plan on reading more from this author in the future. Easily a book (series) I'd highly recommend!

Samuel Grant volunteers to go find his brother's fiancee's brother and bring him to the wedding. When he arrives he finds a half Indian woman, Moriah Clark and a 3 week old baby in the cabin, and she is the wife of the owner of the cabin. Mariah says her husband is dead, and she wants to go back to her people to raise her baby. Samuel volunteers to take Moriah to her village. With the three week old baby, the grueling journey becomes very risky. Can Samuel keep the mother and her baby safe until they reach their destination? Will Samuel loose his heart to Moriah, or will he loose his life? Can Moriah keep her daughter safe? Will she fall in love with Samuel on the journey? Read this book and find out. Even though I was given a copy of this book, it in no way influenced my opinion of this book, and these are my personal views on this book.

BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB
(copied form Amazon.com)

The only hope to keep her newborn baby alive is to reach the safety of her Indian people... This mountain man is the last person she should trust to get her there.

As a half-Indian raised among her Peigan tribe, Moriah Clark knows better than to trust white people. The tragedy that resulted in her birth is proof enough. But when her trusted grandfather marries her to a white man, she has no choice but to obey and hope this new life isn't her downfall. Her white husband turns out to be a decent sort, but his unexpected death left her to birth a newborn baby among hostile mountain men. She wants nothing more than to retreat to the safe haven of her tribal upbringing. When a mysterious frontiersman arrives on her doorstep seeking her deceased husband, his offer to escort her and the babe to her people seems like the opportunity she's been praying to find. But can she trust him?

Samuel Grant has been sent to retrieve Henry Clark for his sister's wedding, but the sight that greets him at the little cabin in the woods is not what he expected. Not only has the man died, but Henry's wife is fighting off an aggressive gang of men at gunpoint--while trying to conceal a newborn. He can't leave the pair unattended, so helping her travel into the mountain country to reach her family seems like the only option. If he can win her trust, that is.

Such a grueling journey with a three-week-old baby will be risky, but the challenges that arise test them far more than either expected. When a devastating surprise increases the danger ten-fold, Moriah focuses all her efforts on keeping her newborn daughter alive. Maybe that's why she doesn't realize how much of her heart belongs to the mountain man--until it's too late.

Heart of the Mountains series continues with brave, compassionate Samuel Grant traveling to give a message to Henry Clark. Samuel finds Henry's widow, Moriah Clark, and her newborn baby at the rough cabin. Moriah has not been treated kindly by whites and doesn't trust this burly white man.
Moriah is a strong half white and half Peigan woman but knows she cannot stay alone and protect her baby. You will admire both Moriah and Samuel as they travel through snow to find Moriah's tribe only to find them gone. Should they continue searching for her tribe or seek shelter with Samuel's family? I have enjoyed all of the books in this series and recommend them to others.

My review today is on the Western Romance, This Daring Journey. This is book six of the Heart of the Mountains Series. I have so enjoyed this series. I like revisiting the characters from the first five books. I love the characters. This story is well written, action packed, and full of faith. I warn you it's not a book to read on a cold night, you will freeze just like the characters do. You are going to love this book.

Samuel Grant is sent on a mission by his brother's future wife. They are about to be married and she wants her brother to come to the wedding. When Samuel arrives at the cabin where Henry lives he finds a woman there and she is under attack. He drives off the attackers and makes himself known to Henry's wife only to learn that Henry had died several months ago. It's obvious to Samuel that this young woman is in trouble. He decides he will take her and her three week old baby to her people.

Moriah Clark is a half breed. Her mother was raped by a French man and then left to care for the child. Moriah's grandfather gave her to the white man Henry Clark to wed. He'd been good to her but after his death men kept trying to take her cabin and her. She has been alone along time and had delivered her child on her own. All she wants now is to travel back to her family. She needed help and safety. She doesn't want Samuel's help but she knows she needs him. Like all the books in this series, this one does not skimp on plot line, interesting well-developed characters, obstacles, danger and devotion. I think of the people who won’t venture out-of-town with a young child and compare that to leaving everything you know, in the middle of winter, with a stranger and to top it off a new born baby. Misty M. Beller always brings such strong characters to her books. It is always a pleasure to get a new book. I can highly recommend this book and the others in the series.

Another fabulous book in the Heart of the Mountain series that you won't put down until you finish! The details of their journey were so well described that I could almost see the narrow mountain trails, the clear waters of the streams and even the campfires beside the rough shelters made to block the wind and weather. I loved the way their faith and trust grew as the story continued to the point of believing that the Lord would bring them safely to their destination. The author has once again crafted an absolutely wonderful narrative that is sure to send your imagination soaring.
I received this ARC through CelebrateLit. All impressions and opinions are my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Misty Beller has become one of my favorite Authors regardless of genre. And is definitely is my favorite authors when it comes to Christian Historical Romance especially that set in early North America either the United States or Canada. I also love the way she organizes her books in the "Heart of the Mountains" series of books. In the case of this volume it is as if you are reading the diaries of Moriah Clark and Samuel Grant. At the beginning of each chapter is what appears to be a Journal entry. And then based on that Journal entry a chapter is written. To me it helps to add realism to her story. I don't want to repeat what is in the synopsis about this book in Goodreads are include spoilers; but basically it is about Moriah Clark who is half Indian and based on her experience doesn't trust white men. Although against her wishes she is married off to a white man named Henry Clark by her Indian Grandfather. He turns out to be OK; but before her baby can be born he dies. Samuel Grant has a brother who is marrying Rachel the sister of Henry Clark. Rachel has sent Samuel Grant to invite her brother to her wedding. Samuel Grant rescues Moriah from some Mountain Men who are threatening her. And then promises to take her to her people. On their journey Samuel Grant is attentive to the needs of both Moriah and her baby, Cherry. He is kind and trustworthy, often putting their needs above his own. Moriah has never know a man like Samuel Grant, Indian or White. On their journey they are joined by a young man named Matisse who is also Indian and looking for the same Peigan tribe that Moriah is part of. There journey is a long hard one with many hardships, sickness, injuries, and danger. It is their faith and integrity of Samuel Clark that allows a relationship to grow between Moriah and Samuel to include Cherry and Matisse that allows them to finally reach safety.

I found it to be a very exciting and moving story. Very well written story. There are no cliff hangers. At no time did the story feel rushed. I just loved it tremendously.
