“THE STALKER” BY ‘SANDEEP SHARMA’
A book review by Payal Ghorpade
Date: May 9, 2019
But the bus left before I had a chance to board it. For the first time in my life, I understood the worth of 3 minutes. Damn! Those precious 3 minutes! I was supposed to travel a long journey from Nagpur to Kolhapur at the crack of dawn but like always my fate and I weren’t on equal terms. Well, no matter how much I try to grease the palm of my fate, it simply doesn’t favour my fathom. So, there I was left with no other choice but to kill time until I get into another scheduled bus three hours later and start my long journey. Hence, the Kindle app on my phone came to my rescue and I deliberately bought 3 books out of which one was “The Stalker” by ‘Sandeep Sharma.’
About the Author:
Sandeep Sharma is a well-known book reviewer who has reviewed more than 200 books. He is also the co-founder of ‘Author Paradise’ and ‘urbookmyreview.com’- a website that promotes reading Indian Authors. He has the bestselling novels like ‘The Coin’, ‘Let The Game Begin’, ‘Hey Dad! Meet My Mom’, ‘Algorithm Of The Future’ and ‘Just A Few Lies’ to his credits.
The Stalker is his sixth book published in January 2019 by Redgrab Books and Anybook Publication.
The Cover page:
The cover page depicting a person in a hoodie standing in the dark, denying to reveal his/her true identity is cognizant to the plot and the title of the novel. The cover page itself answers the purpose of the plot for the expectant readers by the author. It has been clearly sketched that this is a mystery novel and the readers should entirely focus on unleashing the identity of the stalker. The tagline, ‘Here, everyone’s a liar’ aroused my attention more than the mysterious man in the dark. I started digging in through the pages of the novel to unveil these lies while uncovering the mask of the hideous stalker.
Overall, the cover page justified the title, the plot, the setting and the mystery groping in the dark. I liked it!
Characters:
1)Randhir Kamat: co-owner of USB, handsome hunk in his early thirties, harsh, workaholic, true leader, hard worker, attention seeker, sex addict.
2)Rupali: event manager, partner in USB, beautiful, highly mature, professional, short sighted, love of Randhir.
3)Devendra: creative head of USB, Randhir’s friend.
4)Suraj Pant: Inspector in his late forties, man of a few words, keen observer, committed towards his duty.
5)Deepali: unhappy wife of Vipin, the girl who stalked Randhir on his social media.
6)Vipin: Deepali’s husband, corporate worker, workaholic.
7)Rajiv Dixit: Legal advisor of USB
8)Mayank Dev: CEO of Natank Company, professional rival of USB, career focused, childhood friend of Rupali.
9)Pankaj: personal assistant of the chief editor of the Times Daily Newspaper, college junior of Randhir and Devendra, opportunist, genius hacker.
10)Krishna: Suraj’s wife, a homemaker, responsible, understanding, mature, perfect planner.
Themes:
1)Theme of Popularity: In today’s world gaining popularity to earn profits is in vogue. Everyone wants to gain fame and attract publicity towards them. For the sake of this accomplishment, these people are ready to do everything by hook or crook. Randhir in the initial days of USB wanted his company to reach out and rule the internet. Hence he made a cheap plan for gaining popularity for his company, followed by his own fame in the league. The theme of popularity is well exposed in the novel.
2)Theme of Power and Money: With immense money follows power. Devendra wanted to hide truth from the media for time being. He knew anything is possible if he kept the right amount of money in the right hand of the right kind of person. This gives me a blur idea that in India, system is corrupted and bribe makes it easy. Randhir is a successful entrepreneur having enormous money and power, so that he could ask for a special inspector of his choice for dealing his case. Deepali being brainwashed by the stalker began to blackmail Randhir to earn money. The greed of money made her walk on the sinful path and eventually she lost everything.
Hence, with great power and extreme money the doors of sins are always welcoming oneself.
3)Theme of Revenge: In the phase of life, man nurture his brain child to gain success and when this success falls in somebody else’s feet , he just wanna destroy that person to take revenge. Devendra is no different. Randhir, keeping his blossoming career on the threshold decides to involve police to save his love but when he comes to know the truth, he also ensures that every single person involved must be admonished severely. The theme of revenge is the central soul of this novel since the beginning. Every character has harsh feelings for others and deep down in the corners of their heart they desperately seek revenge.
4)Theme of Love: Love is the universal theme of relations. People are ready to walk barefoot blind folded on tight rope to save their loved ones. Love encourages people to play tricks with each other. Randhir loves Rupali. So he is ready to risk everything for her. Rupali fights on behalf of Mayank with Randhir by working in his company. Krishna loves Suraj to the extent that she handles all the preparations of the wedding by herself. Deepali loves her husband Vipin and she blindly follows the instructions of the mysterious stalker to save her husband from the prison. The theme of Love is substantial on the novel.
5)Theme of loneliness: When people are lonely they tend to seek company to fulfil the desires of their hearts. Deepali was a lonely homemaker . She was unhappy in her married life. With no one to talk with her, listen her pleas or lend her a shoulder to cry on, She chose Randhir to fulfil her desires despite knowing everything about Randhir.
Plot:
Inspector Suraj Pant known for his professionalism and commitment towards his duties is appointed to solve the stalking case of Mr.Randhir Kamat, a famous name on page 3. Soon, the inspector finds that every character is hiding something from each other for the accomplishment of their dreams. Gradually, the case takes turns from been the stalking case to merely blackmailing case to a fraud case and at last a revenge case, ultimately unmasking the true identity of the mysterious mastermind.
My Review:
Well, the author did arrange a wonderful concoct of mystery, romance, revenge, fame and power together. The novel was fast paced , a page turner and I finished reading it in less than 2 hours. From almost the beginning , the plot was fairly clear. I particularly liked the dedication page of the novel. It was a unique way of expressing gratitude and dedication. The novel is an easy read with its lucid language. The flow of the story kept me glued till the end. Though, I might have enjoyed a little more development in the professional relations of Devendra and Randhir, the characters are well built. I felt, the story had a good start but it failed to maintain the rhythm till the end. Also, the misprinting in the names like ‘Suraj and Surya’, ‘Devendra and Dharmendra’ set me high on my nerves. It was irritating to continue reading the story with such misprinting. The novel needs a lot of good editing. The author tried to add too many background stories with the characters in the same chapter which spoilt the essense of the suspense. A character gets involved in a circumstance and there follows a background story pf the character in the same chapter where the circumstance prevailed. There is only one character who neither falls prey to any circumstance nor has been provided with any background story. This style of author’s writing clearly gives a hint of the mastermind. I was able to predict the stalker in the first few chapters itself. According to me, the last part of the story was irrational. It was certainly not able to cross the benchmark of a mystery novel. I mean when one has worked hard and executed one’s master plan brilliantly such that no one ever doubted the one then why would one confess everything infront of a police officer unasked without a single thought that this might serve as an evidence to get one caught in the crime. This is silly! The narration should have been better.
Although it is a quick read, I least enjoyed the book. I apologise.
Recommendation:
For the beginners who are looking for a fast paced light read suspense, this novel is for you. The ones who are fond of reading suspense and thrillers shouldn’t go for this.
Favourite Quotes:
1)Nothing will remain at rest and especially when you are dealing with people, you can’t rely on anyone. Everyone can behave in ‘n’ number of ways and hence it is necessary to be prepared with ‘n+1’ number of ways. If you really want to master your game, your plan, you just can’t rely on Plan A or on Plan B. You need to prepare the plan C,D,E,F,…. (needs a good deal of editing)
2)People should either be caressed or crushed. If you do them minor damage they will get their revenge; but if you cripple them there is nothing they can do. If you need to injure someone, do it in such a way that you do not have to fear their vengeance.
3)If you want to catch a thief, look for the sweat.
4)Party hard but only after you have worked hard.
5)Purpose… Existence…Reality… Everything is just a loophole where we- the common people-get stuck. Don’t think of what, why, how of the life, simply enjoy it.
6)Maybe… ‘Maybe’ is always the beginning and the end of anything that can’t be explained.
7)The journey from sanity to insanity takes no considerable effort. It’s all there,up in your head that can drive you to the other side of the fine line that a sane person will never cross.
8)If you want to make God laugh, just let him know your future plans.
9)Listening is a fine art and there’s nothing that can’t be learned about a person by simply listening to his words.
10) The life, from which we want to run away sometimes, prove to be the best life that we could actually live.
11)Sometimes, the things that we plan for our betterment becomes the worst possible things that could happen to us.
12) A perfect planner is the one who is unpredictable, just like life is!
13) If you want to see the extremity of a person, ignite fear in him.
14)Sometimes, it is better to accept the things that you have and let go of the things that you think you deserve because everyone gets what they deserve; not more, not less.
