The minute I saw a unicorn on the cover of this book, I knew that I was going to love it. Call it a hunch! I was a big lover of unicorns as a young girl and their majestic beauty and allure seemed to stay with me into adulthood.
Darion Smith seems to be your typical teenage boy growing up in Oregon who has to face normal teenage issues (bullying, girl crushes, not fitting in, etc.) but Darion is anything but “normal” and soon starts to see how different he really is. Born with an unusual birthmark that seems to be growing and continually having frighteningly real dreams, he is soon faced with an undeniable fate and is literally propelled into another world.
Enter Nav’Aria- a fantasy lover’s dream come true, where unicorns are bad-a$$ warriors that are both beautiful and deadly creatures, centaurs roam and the land is in war and turmoil at the hands of the evil, Narco, who has treasonously corrupted this beautiful and peaceful place with dark magic.
You’ll meet a slew of characters, a line of unicorns that will leave you speechless, and a magnificent king who is the very definition of regal. And you’ll be thrown into the non-stop action that is taking place as Darion finds his true identity and must join in the battle to save the kingdom.
This book had it all- mythical creatures, history, action, drama and some laughs too. KJ Backer weaves an amazingly eloquent tale with multiple POVs and back stories. Such character development and suspense that had me unable to stop reading. This was a true page turner!
With elements of Narnia and Legend as well as an originality that will utterly thrill you, this fantasy novel is a must read and I absolutely LOVED it! I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one.
I went into this novel not knowing what to expect. I don't usually read adult fantasies, but found myself completely enthralled and on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Darian is a teenager, adopted by two amazing and loving parents, but he's always felt like he didn't belong somehow. Strange things are starting to happen to him...he doesn't belong in Oregon. Who is he? Who are his real parents and why was he given away for adoption as a baby? The answer can't be found in Oregon, where he grew up, but in Nav'Aria.
I won't give away too much, but I am loving this fresh take on a fantasy realm. Trolls, centaurs, humans, cruel Rav'Arians, fighting unicorns (my favorite characters of the book), and a villain I hate even more than Dolores Umbridge - and that's really saying something! My stomach was in knots the entire time, cheering for the characters and sharing in their heartache. I can't wait to see what happens next with Darian and his companions!
Darion is a typical teenager. Beset by guffawing bullies, he lurches from one disaster to another, usually in front of the girl he idolises. His adoptive parents and his boss are fine, but can tell him nothing of his elusive past, until a curious birthmark suddenly starts to spread... The first installment of Backer's Nav'Aria cycle, The Marked Heir, is a fun read, containing all you'd want from a fantasy: a teenage hero growing into his destiny, royal parents struggling with theirs, an evil villain, the hint of a dragon and, in my opinion its best feature, warrior unicorns. My only quibble was that I found the writing tended to veer from YA fantasy, where I would place most of the novel, to some seriously adult moments that were jarring in context. However, a fun 4 star read and great start to the series.
Do you like fantasy, a mix of dark and heroic/epic with a magic portal and supernatural creatures? Then, welcome to Nav'Aria!
Darion is an ordinary pizza boy from Oregon. Until, he is summoned to his true home which is at war with an evil that is shockingly brutal. Stopping before the spoilers, but this is the start of an amazing fantasy series. P.S. dragons and unicorns?! 💖😍
Loved the take on the unicorns. Not sure why you feel this is for older people as the subjects and story are great, mild and not “adultish “ at all. I recommend for great read
Wonderfully written, I was enthralled from the start. Had trouble putting it down until silly hours of early mornings. Excellent characters, great world building and awesome storyline. Can't wait for book 2!
Well worn tropes and archetypes presented in a familiarly comfortable tale. The flow and visual language raises it above many similar stories, I want to read the rest of the story.
As soon as I knew what this book was about I just had to read it. Fantasy, a boy who doesn't really know who he is, a fantastic bad guy and unicorns. It are not the light-hearted Disney kind, but the talking, prideful, fighting kind. I don't know how Backer does it, but there is no comparison possible. This book is unique. Backer has the ability to pull you in the story and keep you there, from the first moment you start reading. An amazing talent!
A prince finally returns home. A king wages war against an evil foe. And daring escapes and attacks occur. Nav’Aria: The Marked Heir was a page turning, heart pounding, wild adventure from start to finish, and I’m already OBSESSED with this series! I’ve followed KJ Backer on social media for a while, and this book has been at the top of my TBR for a while. I’m so glad I started it, but since book two hasn’t come out yet, I’m left wishing for more!
Darion feels like an outsider. He’s an orphan, he’s bullied in school, and he has an odd birth mark on the ring finger of his right hand. While his adoptive parents love him, Darion still feels that something isn’t right. When he begins to have dreams of a woman locked in a cell, the truth of Darion’s heritage comes out, and he must hurry to embrace his fate before it’s too late.
Right off the bat readers are presented with the outsider/orphan hero. There’s nothing special about Darion - yet - while there are countless clues hinting that he’ll to become something more. I loved how realistically Darion was written for a high schooler - and working as a pizza delivery boy too! He’s easy to understand and sympathize with, and I was immediately rooting for him to succeed at everything he attempted.
When Darion’s birthright came to light, I loved how everyone in his life who cared for him was in on the truth. Obviously his adoptive parents, Rick and Carol, knew who Darion truly was, but I was surprised that Tony from the pizza place played a big role too. Together, the three of them made up Darion’s Protectors, and it was so nice to have them tell the whole back story of how they left Nav’Aria. Most times books with a backstory like this only reveal small pieces at a time as the main character unravels what happened, but because there’s so much more conflict for Darion to face, readers quickly learn about the coup on the royal family, the atrocities Narco has been inflicting, and the current state of the kingdom. Although all that information is provided up front, there are still questions about Narco and his source of power that none of the characters have answers to.
There was so much at play in Nav’Aria that it’s almost hard to choose what to discuss! There were themes of family and belonging between Darion and his Protectors as well as his true parents. It was so sweet that Carol and Rick had come to care so deeply for Darion that they still considered him their son even after reuniting him with his birth father. And then there was Darion meeting his birth parents for the first time and the questions of living up to parental expectations - which were quite high considering Darion’s birth parents were the King and Queen of Nav’Aria, as well as skilled warriors.
There was also a wonderful focus on gender and races - with a fantasy twist of course! Because there are more than just humans living in Nav’Aria, the different species interact in different ways. Not so much an “us versus them” scenario, but it was great how KJ Backer goes into detail about the roles each species fill and how they all contribute to Nav’Arian society. The role of female warriors comes up a few times, and I love how KJ Backer emphasizes the fact that females can be just as fierce and skilled as the male warriors in this story.
Several different points of view are explored throughout the novel, and KJ Backer does a wonderful job giving each individual their own voice. From Darion all the way to the majestic unicorn warriors, they are all well developed and distinct. And she even goes into Narco’s perspective which was a treat (even though he’s horrible) because we get to see how twisted his mind is, and it doesn’t give away too much of his motives or secrets that it spoils the plot for the books to come.
I enjoyed the beginning of this series so much, and I’m already dying for more. Thankfully book two will be coming out this year, and there will be a third to follow!
Welcome to Darian’s world, a typical teenager dealing with hormones, resentment, and let’s not forget pimples. But, all of Darian’s worries become trivial in comparison to a battle against good and evil that may rely on his help. Discovering his destiny, Darian is thrown into Nav’Aria – a magical world with centaurs, trolls, fairies, and yes, unicorns. Just as Darian has to forget all he knows about his previous life, us readers should forget most everything we know about the gentle, mythical creatures we think of as unicorns. K.J. Backer’s unicorns make an apt analogy of the emotions many young adults are wrought with compared to many people’s initial perception of the mythical animals. Much like the unicorns, Darian, the teenage boy, has stronger characteristics than anyone would initially perceive at a glance. Strength, determination, intelligence, and an aptitude for leadership are many of the common features shared between our main character and the unicorns in this book. Both Darian and the unicorns can be misjudged at first glance, yet both have massive potential. Nav’Aria is a place where impossible ideas, creatures, and dreams come to life. The world is Darian’s escape from the harsh reality of being a teenager, giving him the opportunity of a new life that is full of adventure, but great responsibility as he defends a kingdom and his heritage from an evil usurper. Much like becoming an adult in normal life, teenagers can branch out on their own, choosing a life they can be proud of, if they are willing to put in the work and take responsibility for themselves. For any teenager who dreams of a life other than the one they’re currently in, this is the book for them. No longer will unicorns appeal only to girls. With strong, battle-warring, intelligent unicorns to bond with, every boy and girl, young and old, will be wanting one as these unicorns as a best friend and trusted advisor. Though the book is not labeled as a YA novel, having the main character as a young adult who deals with the same insecurities and mental capacity of other youths his age allows this novel to appeal to YA fans while also including adult, fantasy fiction enthusiasts.
Orphan. Outsider. Freak. Labels and questions swirl in Darion’s troubled mind. Why did his birthparents abandon him? Why is he haunted by visions of mythical beasts, a captive, and her torturer? And why is his birthmark glowing? Discovering his true-identity may cost Darion everything, as he is suddenly confronted with a war-ravaged Realm and the answers he has always sought. My Review: There is so much I want to say about this book. It has everything a fantasy novel should have! It has mythical creatures, which everyone should love, plot, developed characters, an interesting progression of events. I was really excited to read this novel for quite some time, and it did NOT disappoint. The imagery K.J. Backer's writing creates in your mind is superb and magnanimous. The battle scenes were written well, and I was enthralled the entire time. What is really amazing about this story is the emotion of the author. It has been some time that I have read something that truly had the spirit of the writer. If you want to read a story that involves unicorns that aren't stereotypical, i.e. pink, fluffy, cotton candy eating creatures, then you need to pick up this novel. I highly recommend this novel to everyone who loves fantasy of any genre.
I can't believe how much I loved this book! It was perfectly paced. The characters were appropriately flawed for a compelling story. Even the characters I didn't necessarily care for at the beginning, grew with the story; I loved (or hated) them by the end.
I didn't see the twist of betrayal coming because it was well written into the story. I can usually see those things coming a mile away. When it happened I was like ahhhh...how did I not see that?
The Marked Heir contained the ideal amount of scenery and plot description. It lead me anxiously to the next scenes and chapters and sparked my imagination.
Now for the fun stuff...unicorns, centaurs, mermaids, nymphs, trolls, winged lizard beasts (dragons?), and magic, this story had it all. The land of Nav'Aria seamlessly integrated these mythical creatures into a story that had me rooting for good to prevail.
My only criticism for this story (and I am nit picking here) is the head/POV hopping within a scene. It distracted me a tiny bit but did not slow me down.
I can't wait to see what happens next. In fact, I am going to start reading the next one as soon as I finish this review. Yes, that good.
Step Into The World Of Nav’Aria & Be Enthralled! I was enticed into reading this series by a very dear lady & I’m so glad I took the bait!! What a fantastical ride; I’m not ashamed to admit that I read all three books in a little over a week!! I couldn’t wait to get my indoor & outdoor chores done so that I could delve into the land of Nav’Aria once again. Each and every character within these pages is lovingly developed…even those cast in unlikeable roles! I thrilled at each new personality and marveled at how they were all cleverly tied together. Kudos to KJ Backer for taking the time to create a one of a kind fantasy world most of us have only partially visited or dreamed of!! This lovely author valiantly depicts each and every whimsical creature I have ever daydreamed of when fantasizing about such a place. Thank you KJ for a fabulous series in the wonderful world of Nav’Aria. Keep the creative juices flowing; can’t wait to read more of your exceptional work.
A classic tale of good versus evil set in a new fantastical land! Nav’Aria is filled with lots of magical creatures such as unicorns, centaurs, nymphs and others. But forget the docile unicorns that are usually found in stories - in K.J Backer’s world you will meet fearsome warrior unicorns! It’s a new and very interesting take on these mythological creatures! Backer also deals very well with the adoption theme in her novel. I really get a sense of the conflicting emotions that adopted children can experience. All in all, if you love unicorns and a classic battle of good versus evil then this is definitely the book for you!
I may add to this review at a later time. instead of dawdling I wanted to get something up. I loved this story, the characters came alive for me and the places that they spent time made me feel like I was there. This is a simple and quick review saying wow I loved it. As soon as I finished Book 1 I bought the next book in this series and I am already reading it. I am already invested in this next book.
K.J. Backer has created a wonderful world in Nav’Aria. The bond between human and unicorn is beautiful and necessary for a world held in the grip of evil and betrayal. Darion, the rightful prince and heir to the Throne, must battle his insecurities even as he trains for the final test to establish himself as the true Heir.
This is book one and I can hardly wait to read the second in the series. Highly recommend this to all fantasy lovers.
I really enjoyed this book. It reminded my of The Chronicles of Narnia, just veered more for adults. There was plenty of action in the story making it so I didn’t want to put the book down. I loved Backer’s use of mythical creatures, especially the Unicorns. I loved how they were civilized and lived alongside humans as their equals. Antonis was easily my favorite character and I’m excited to see how his story continues in book 2.
This is a wonderful coming of age tale about Darion, your not so average teenager. Brace yourself for trolls, centaurs and yes... unicorns! These are not your run off the mill peaceful unicorns. We are talking warrior unicorns. There is some wonderful world building that any fan of epic/high fantasy will enjoy.
In her debut novel Nav’Aria: The Marked Heir, KJ Backer has done a splendid job of world-building and creating mythologies, and she tells an action-packed story revolving around issues of family, belonging, and honor.
Ms. Backer’s best creation, however, are her unicorns. And for the record, these are not sweet My-Little-Pony-ish unicorns. These are bad@$$, fighting, telepathic unicorns dedicated to protecting both the kingdom and the (legitimate) rulers of Nav’Aria. Which means going up against the forces of Narco, who has usurped power by foul means and dark magic.
The Marked Heir is a coming of age story, primarily following the perspective of Darion as he learns of his heritage (kept from him for his own protection) as The Marked Heir of the Merida family and the throne of Nav’Aria. He faced with the confusion of feeling he’s betraying the love of his adopted parents by accepting the mantle of Heir and reconnecting with his birth parents, the King and Queen of Nav’Aria. Darion must also discern what it means to be a Merida, absorb the history of his new kingdom, and learn to be a warrior and ruler.
And a warrior he must become, for Narco’s hold is almost absolute, and if unchecked he and his minions (Rav’Arians (nasty creatures, for sure) and Trolls) will soon overwhelm the forces of men, unicorns, centaurs, etc. arrayed against him. This is a starkly black and white, good vs evil story. There don’t seem to be many shades of grey in Nav’Aria—one is either aligned with Narco (evil personified), or with King Vikaris and his family as they strive to restore their line to the throne of Nav’Aria.
Ah, but I digress. Back to those unicorns. They can mystically bond with members of the ruling family, acting as protectors, mentors, and often consciences. They are fiercesome warriors and possess magical qualities as well, making them valuable allies and feared enemies. They also seem to be the keepers of knowledge and legend in this world, and for this reason alone Narco would wish them dead, so he can mold the world to his own twisted vision rather than to the historical norms.
Nav’Aria: The Marked Heir has lots of action (some of it surprisingly brutal), a bit of leavening humor, some excellent world-building, and characters you can cheer for (and a few you can happily hate on). The story ends on a LoTR-ish cliffhanger that propels one right off into the next book in the series, The Pyre of Tarsin. More unicorns, please!

Backer takes us on a magical journey into the wonderful kingdom of Nav'Aria, as Darion learns of his true heritage, and his princely destiny yet to be fulfilled.
The evil Narco and the Rav'Arians wants to rule Nav'Aria, killing every creature who dares to stop them. Mythical warriors including centaurs, unicorns and nymphs aide the Marked Royals as they make their stand against the evil forces--will they win? Or will the kingdom they love disappear?
Nav'Aria is a magical, heartwarming story of good vs. evil, filled with enchanting characters and scenery descriptions that takes your breath away. This is a fantasy, coming of age page turner that kept this reader engaged to the very last paragraph. A great read, highly recommended!
I happened to meet KJ at a renaissance festival and she is just the sweetest person to talk to! So when I started reading her novel it was unlike anything I expected. Full of danger, heart break, and an enemy that makes your blood boil with rage, it truly was a great action packed read. Also, can’t forget strong, badass female characters! Can’t wait to read the sequel next.
