When eighteen-year-old Lisa enters the mandatory Birth Program, she doesn’t doubt the deadly turn her life is to take. With the ominous threat of a trial and the terrible grief that comes with the loss of a close friend, survival soon emerges as second nature to her. Among impending death, violence, and terror are also friendship, love, and compassion. But this world is fragile, and to protect it, Lisa is forced to make difficult choices, and no matter which path she chooses, staying alive will require sacrifices the likes of which she never could have imagined. The question is: will Lisa be able to live with the fallout of these choices and the sacrifices that accompany them?

An enjoyable dystopian read about Lisa, who fails in the mandatory birthing program. She is supposed to be retired... but is retirement all that it's cracked up to be?

I thought the romance elements were nicely done and very sweet, while not overtaking the story. There were also a couple of surprises (that I won't mention here) that made me intrigued, and all was answered at the end. Or was it? I'm still not entirely sure what happened on the final page, but I've heard rumours of a second book so I'm going to take an optimistic approach ;).
