This is a very fine richly illustrated introduction to the Vikings for children. I read it for myself, merely to get some grounding on the basics and a sense of what things looked like before moving onto more adult material. I learnt accidentally from having a child that a good place to start learning something about which you no nothing is from the Eyewitness series. This is an excellent starting point for children of all ages. It relies heavily on the idea that a picture tells a thousand words, while being scholarly and accessible for older children. Good all round work.

OK I know these are supposed to be kid books but they are awesome! Great pictures and just enough text to make you want to learn more. Great choices for a beginning history reader or to start an older reader out in a new area. Every time I pick one of these up and read it I learn new things. Highly Recommended

Like all DK Eyewitness Books, Viking is packed with color photographs, in this case of archeological finds and historical recreations of the Viking Age. What surprised me was how much information Susan M. Margeson has written to accompany Peter Anderson's photographs. The book was not only delightful to look at but fascinating to read. A great resource for anyone interested in the history of the Vikings.

Again, I love these types of informational books for kids. They are great for boys and girls, introduce nonfiction text features like a table of contents and index effectively, and are packed full of information and illustrations that can be used for all sorts of things. Easy to read. One of the coolest "Eyewitness" books I've ever seen, I love vikings!

The DK Eyewitness series are awesome tools for research or just delving into a favorite topic. This re-issue of the Viking book provides a unique view into the lives of the Norse people, their legends and their bravery. You can further explore their amazing stories with a foldout wall chart and a clip-art CD. A great book to add to your collection, for ages 9 to Adult.

I love Eyewitness Books because there are good overviews of cultural history and even though some captions are a higher level of reading, the real-feel pictures keep children interested (learning) and entertained (fun).

Comprehensive introduction to the Viking Age for young readers

Eyewitness Vikings is an excellent technical book to educate in a fun way. A while ago I was writing a fiction storyline about vikings and honestly I sifted through so many large texts online about norse mythology and viking lifestyles and I was looking for this book. A place where visual images of what terms references, and a neatly organized compartmentalization of all different aspects of their culture. If only I had this book at the time.

This book comes with a audio CD, a poster in the back, and a special glossary of lingo and fascinating facts. Fun fact: "First Arrivals: the first europeans to colonize North American were Vikings, who landed in Newfoundland, Canada, in about 1001, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus made his famous journey."

so why do we have Columbus Day and not Viking Day?

I would highly recommend this text to any student interested in history, medieval lifestyles, warriors, boats, and explorers.
