Almost everyone knows about what Stephen Hawking accomplished in his life but little is known about how he came about to be what he was. Hourly History provides those details, details of a tumultuous life that this legendary figure led.
I've always been a fan of Stephen Hawking but knew very little about his early life. His courage through out his life has inspired me, for him to live with the complications of MND and work like he did takes some doing. Very much recommended.
Stephen Hawking was an extraordinary person in so many ways. This book is a pretty quick read on the highlights of his personal and professional life and the people most important to him.
When I might feel down again, I'll think about what Stephen Hawking was able to accomplish with ALS. I feel lucky to have born in the same era as Hawking, Sagan, and Jobs.
This is my favorite type of biography; it is a fairly balanced view of Stephen Hawking's personal and professional life. I was aware that Hawking had Lou Gehrig's Disease but this is an uplifting tale about a man's ability to operate on a plane above his personal suffering. It is an inspiring story and I would encourage others to hear this amazing man's story.
I remember reading "A Brief History of Time" and being in awe that I could understand; he explained things in such a clear way. It is interesting that he could be understood only by scientists with a physics degree (or two under their belts). However, his goal was to make everyone part of understanding the majesty of science.
Hawking's personal life was no less interesting than his scientific pursuits. I was not aware that he even had a wife, much less than the fact that he had two (and 3 children). Hawking earned so many awards for his work; it looks like he was compensated for his loss of physical abilities with lots of accolades and worldwide recognition. I thought this book brought a rare insight into a complex man's life and work.
Stephen Hawking was a physicist, cosmologist and one of the most brilliant minds. He is known for his work on black holes.
I was surprised to read that when he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS the doctors told him that he would probably not survive more than two years. However he managed to live more than fifty years after the diagnosis. The book captures his remarkable and inspirational life.
Stephen Hawking was truly inspirational for me, because despite having the Motor Neuron Disease, he still didn't give up and instead he made meaning in his life, by writing books which sold millions of copies and contributing in physics. This book concisely talks about his early life, the challenges he faced, and chronological order of events which happened in his life. It's just 1 hour read (approx. 34-35 pages) so you'll be able to finish it in a day!
After reading most number of works on Stephen Hawking and also some of his works(which I can make sense of), I can surely say that hourly history has done a great job in presenting the inspiring life in a concise way. It was a story of man with a lust for life that even significant disability couldn't dampen, Stephen Hawking will be an inspiration to all.
An interesting synopsis of the life of Stephen Hawking. The author stated several of Hawking's theories from physics and cosmology as well as brief mention of his family life. While the physics theories were stated in terms a layman could understand I still found myself scratching my head over the complexity of it all.
It gives a good overview of Hawking's life and so is memorable.
As a lover of science, learning about one of the world's most famous scientist was kind of my wish. And a short, but informative book by hourly history was clearly what I needed.
This book contains Stephen Hawking's childhood, his disease, his discoveries, personal life, awards, and death; all of this in just 48 pages.
These Hourly History books are pretty good, and I am a better person after reading them. But they could all use a once-over by an editor. Still this one about Stephen Hawking is worth the read.
Hawking’s fierce intellect and sharp sense of humor reminded everyone that “people need not be limited by physical handicaps as long as they are not disabled in spirit.
This is a concise story of the life and work of Stephen Hawking. It mentions but does not elaborate his sense of humor. ALS may have taken his life but he managed to accomplish a great deal before he succumbed. I intend to reread his book A Brief History of Time.
I had seen the movie about Stephen Hawking's life and I had also read "A Brief History of Time" and yet I did still learn more about Stephen Hawking's life that I had not known before by reading this brief one hour biography. Well worth the read.
Before I read this book I did not think that I was going to learn much more than I already knew about Hawking. However, after reading this book, it is interesting to know that there was yet more to learn about Steven Hawking than I had anticipated.
Interesting read for me. I barely knew exactly what Stephen Hawking was famous for but this quick read explained it well. He was quite a quirky character but lived a long, full life despite being diagnosed with ALS at age 20. That in itself is quite a feat.
I very much enjoyed this book. I had heard about this famed scientist but didn't have too much information, this book gave it to me and, it gave me more information to look into!
This is a piece which justifies the work and life of Stephan and will allow you to know more about the protagonist. His life has been full of obstacles and it will motivate you to do things which may seem to be impossible for you. This book is all about knowing the legend.
Concise story that very well summarizes highlights and events from Stephen Hawking's Life. A good reminder that “people need not be limited by physical handicaps as long as they are not disabled in spirit.”
I very seldom have any quibbles recommending any books from this series. However, would much prefer, to point any interested reader in the direction of Stephen's own work "A brief history of time".
