Izzy Sage is settling into her new life despite the pall hanging over her past.
While the memories of the catastrophe that took her parents when she was a child remain elusive, she finds she’s comfortable in her new environment… even though she happens to have taken up the same position her father held when he was killed.
She’s the new death gate operator, which means she’s in control when souls are ferried to the other side. She literally controls death… and it’s not a comfortable spot to be in.
Her only problem is a man… and it’s not something she thought she would be facing because romance was supposed to be off the table.
Braden Grimlock isn’t exactly known for being mature and grounded, but there’s something about Izzy that calls to him. He can’t stay away. The feeling only grows stronger when a group of deaf students tour the aquarium located on top of the death gate… and the teacher drops dead in the middle of a blackout.
Right away, Izzy senses something is wrong… other than the obvious, that is. She simply can’t figure out what sort of opponent she’s facing.
The past is about to meet the present as a long-hidden secret grabs Izzy by the throat and demands answers. There’s a malevolent spirit on the loose and he has designs on escape from Belle Isle. The havoc he could wreak if freed is immeasurable.
It’s up to Izzy and Braden… and the rest of the Grimlocks… to figure out what’s happening and stop a horrifically determined ghost from claiming an innocent life. It’s going to take all of them working together… and if a little romance gums up the works, they’re simply going to have to deal with that, too.
Izzy is a powerful Bruja. Even she might not be strong enough to face the horror of what’s to come, though.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
Only the Quiet A Death Gate Grim Reapers Thriller, Book 2 By: Amanda M. Lee Narrated by: Sarah Grace Wright Great follow-up book with more info on the co-workers, the Grimlock family, and a dead soul that is inhabiting a boy! There are ghosts, merpeople, and thrills in here along with witty dialogue, a fun family, and budding romance. A very enjoyable read! I hope this series is 20 books long!!! The narration is excellent!
Ok, so I am really liking this series, but lines are getting blurred. Is this series for Izzy, or is it just another way to tell Aisling's story from the sidelines. For a side character, she takes up a lot of the page.
This series is of the light read, fun paranormal mystery style. She probably shouldn’t put thriller in the sub-title as those not familiar with the author may expect something significantly less pleasant. Amanda writes cozy witch mysteries with a few series focusing on a different main character paranormal than witch.
I’ve been enjoying both this and the Grim series and will continue to read them as they’re available.
This book is supposed to be about the Gatekeeper, Izzy. However 75% of it is about the Reaper clan and their family drama. I didnt read that series and I wont based on how they all act in this book. I cant even imagine reading a book that's exactly dedicated to them if it's anything like this one. They're characters are childish and whiny. It's not cute or endearing in any way.
Izzy (with her limited page time) comes off as immature and a bit of a jerk. For example, the first chapter of the book consist of her trying to force her employee to talk about personal relationships while in the work place. She actually tells him that he "has to tell her". Well actually Boo, he doesnt. Did she get any type of management training? Apparently not.
She then goes on to spit out phrases such as, "You're annoying too. In fact, I think you're more annoying than I am"... 😒Seriously?
She visits the Grim Respers clan house and says, "It still looks the same"... Duh!🙄 You just saw it twoweek ago! Why would a house change in two weeks?
There is this scene where the dad has to explain that women did not have the same rights as men 60 years ago. Obviously this is basic American history... did these people not go to High School???
Then immediately after the sexism conversation, they start a sexist conversation about the men going to spa days like it's only for women 🤦🏽♀️... immature.
Izzy also has these temper tantrum for at least the first quarter of the book. When she is talking to people, she constantly responds with "I became immediately irritated" or "I had to hold in my annoyance". Chick you are new to this, shut up and learn something!
Other annoying stuff from this book includes how many times characters mention that the Dad loves his 5 kids... OK! THATS WHAT DADS DO!... and how many times characters say, "I dont understand"... over and over and over. And this was a complaint I had with book 1... so apparently they still ain't learned NOTHING!
And last but not least, how can you have these immature characters using these randomly "big" words that dont actually fir into the type of vocabulary they use on z regular basis... these kids aren't "Flabbergasted"... A-NNOY-ING!!!
I feel bad because the premise of this story is intriguing, but it doesnt fit well in this YA format. I still don't even know the purpose of Gatekeepers. They're function seems irrelevant. If this was written with real adult characters, grown up dialogue, possibly Urban Fantasy it had a chance to be great for me. In this middle school format, I'm just done with this series.
I haven't even mentioned how things from book one were different in book two. How Izzy doesnt know how to hire a new employee. How Izzy doesnt know that there are cameras in her work place. That Izzy (with no kids) has to teach these people about their own baby and how to soothe her. How she comes up with these magically abilities out of the blue... so convenient and unrealistic.
One nice thing: The Cover art is beautiful! Two nice things: Narrator was good
But that's it...
1 STAR - 🌟 Either this was Not Interesting or Bad Story tmTelling. Usually a book I had to force myself to finish.
I am really enjoying this series. It has a number of things that make a great read for me.
First off, this is some very creative, clever and entertaining paranormal world-building. This world has paranormals that are different from other stories (although it also has the ones readers are familiar with, like witches and vampires).
These books also have interesting, likable but complex characters - especially Izzy - who have very engaging back stories to enable the events of each book.
So far the two books I've read have had well constructed clever plots with plenty of drama and suspense to keep me reading once I start.
Finally, this author is great at infusing humour into the story that not only makes me laugh out loud at the antics of the characters and their interactions, but it neatly defuses the tension at key moments in the story.
I'm totally hooked on this world and it's inhabitants and definitely plan to continue with this series. Really entertaining reads!
What can I say, I am adoring this series so far. Izzy still hasn’t shown up her full power, and I can’t wait for the day she does. She is such a sassy fun character, and her relationship with Braden and his family is deepening. Which leads me to the Grimlocks. Wow, they are completely insane, but I do so enjoy this family. We get to spend more time with Cormack, as well as baby Lily (who has a surprise in store for her deliriously tired family), and Jerry. He’s so much fun.
Anyway, the mystery this time around wasn’t as interesting as the supercharged wraiths in the first book, yet I still enjoyed the hell out of Only the Quiet. My hands are now itching to get a hold of book three.
4.5 Stars... I enjoyed this read immensely... We got a deeper look at Izzy's abilities as well as her hidden history... The presenting storyline revolving around ghosts and evil spirits was intriguing and uncovered past secrets for the characters... We also continue to hang with the Grimlock brood which is highly entertaining... And last but not least, Izzy's and Braeden's relationship intensifies which adds another dynamic to the storyline... All in all a fun and entertaining read in this engaging series:)
I wanted to love this book/series. It has an interesting storyline.
Girls parents are killed. Girl can’t remember what happened although she was there. Girl grows up and returns to the scene years later to discover what happened. Girl, now woman, meets mysterious guy who is linked to her new job as the gate keeper. Weird and funky things start happening.
That’s the basis of books 1 and 2. Not a bad premise right?
Here are my issues: - I still don’t know what a gatekeeper actually does. I know they “control the gate through which souls cross over”, but we never actually learn about how this happens or what she does. Also, she’s never, ever at work!? - I started getting suuuuper tired of none of the characters ever knowing anything about anything? Something happens…all characters announce “I have no idea what that is / I don’t know what to do / I’ve never seen this before / I don’t know anything. I get this is supposed to be mysterious…but hells bells, surely someone in the story has to know something? I felt lost as the reader, with none of the characters ever knowing what was happening and taking the lead. - The repetition is mind numbing. The scenes repeat bits of information and conversations all the time. It’s like being in a weird do-loop, and much of it is redundant. - The dialogue bothered me most. It’s incredibly childish and stilted. It’s really unnatural and not easy to read. The MC’s dialogue in particular was extremely formal and not how I’d imagine a twenty something year old woman to talk. - The MC is hella irritating. She’s a know it all who (as we have already mentioned in point 2) actually knows nothing, according to her. She’s bitchy and childish towards her love interest, and no self respecting guy would have persued her as long as he did, given how much she constantly rejected him and they way she does it. Example: guy has repeatedly asked her on a date, she likes him a lot but for some unknown reason insists on being a stuck up bitch alllll the time. Here’s a little nugget…
“I don’t want to spend another night here.” “You don’t have to go right now, though.” “I guess. What did you have in mind? If it’s another meal with your family, no offense, I think I’ll pass.” “How about I take you out for a simple dinner? There’s a good place right around the corner.” “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.” “It’s also a bar. We can get a few drinks and then I can get one of my father’s drivers to take you back to the island.” “I guess I can live with that”
Is it just me or does she sound petulant?
And this line: “I viciously pinched his flank.”
What are we? 27 or 12? Who “viciously pinches flanks?” Sigh.
- Did I mention the terrible dialogue? I did? Ok good, just needed to make sure that was covered because it’s pretty bad. - She repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly tells us how she “don’t need no man”. No that’s a joke, but she tells us how she can look after herself and doesn’t need anyone to look after her. Again, and again, like…we get it honey, you’re a strong independent woman. It’s ok to lean on people sometimes. It actually makes her look immature and weak to be honest.
I like the idea of the book, as I mentioned, I just didn’t like parts of the writing. I was cringing through most of this one. Not sure I’ll make it to the third sadly.
The plot had a lot of scenario repetition and kept getting lost in getting the female lead and male lead together... which would have been fine if that had been good.
But it wasn't.
In their interactions, the female lead comes off as weak, irresolute and easily manipulated while the male lead comes off as full of himself, disrespectful (she doesn't want to hold hands with you, buddy, back off!) and manipulative and, despite the page time devoted to them, no meeting of the minds and/or emotional connection and/or passionate interest was built between them. They met, he quickly expressed interest, she turned him down, everyone started pressuring her in his direction (very inappropriately in the underling's case), they ended up in social situations several times due to work circumstances (which usually featured his family more than them) and, then for no on-page reason, . Yeah, she thought he was attractive and charming but while everyone else was insisting she was into him, her actual thoughts/actions were pretty lukewarm and tentative.
Personally, I am finding the books are more about his family than their romance and while I am finding his family endlessly amusing (hence the two stars), my growing disappointment in the female lead and male lead is fast overshadowing my enjoyment of them.
Also folks constantly keeping her in the dark regarding her past is beyond annoying. She's not a child or teenager or even a young adult, she's a grown-ass twenty-seven year old woman who has worked literally years to get to this position in life in order to uncover it, respect her strength of purpose and just answer her damn questions!
This is great. I really like Izzy and this was a great continuation of the previous book. It takes place a few weeks after. The story was absorbing and her romance relationship with the Grimlocks developed further. Great scenes and cuteness with baby Lily.
Loved the introduction of Bret and the further development of Oliver. Not as much snark but would say the perfect amount of it and sass. New development with Angelina which was interesting and entertaining; hopefully more to come (she is a pitiful love to "dislike" kind of character). Her character development has been just great.
Izzy eenie meenie miney moed (basically) her new hire on the last couple of pages. Most guesses or (hopes) by fans was chosen. It will be great to see the character in a new setting and see where it might lead. Especially since the character is a fan favorite. This character's children may be Lily age'ish so maybe some common ground with Aisling (which I struggled to force myself to pronounce her name correctly [I'd been thinking Ayz'ling], Cillian was easier as I thought Kill e an half the time). She may still revert in my brain, but it is my brain after all.
Super enjoy all of Amanda M always's books and her book as under Lily Harper Hart and recommend them as well as this fun newish series.
This book was cute, though it wasn't nearly as fascinating as the first one. Here are some of my main issues: - Oliver keeping things about Carroll secret was a bit, jumbled and felt abrupt and out of place - The delay between each piece of information. I loved the Grimlock family shenanigans and the budding romance, but it felt like two different stories trying to mash together - Carroll's demise was just as short and underwhelming as the villain in the first book, there seems to be more that could happen. Especially with the potential with the fact that Izzy is a Bruja. There almost seems to be stuff missing making the action a bit lack luster.
Over all, this was a fun read. Mostly for the budding romance and the family bonding. There was a lot of potential with a shade and with the trapped ghosts but it didn't seem to build upon that. I hope further into the series there can be more explored with the voodoo, and also more hints to her parents. There's a big bad, but as of right now there has been no hint that there is a big bad. Just a bit more filling of the world would be fun to read, so I'm hoping.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Again with the Aisling crap... Who is this book about? Well, May the gods help all the other ' freakin' amazons' out there that dont have five brothers, a creepy over involved DADDY, and total stranger to watch her her baby if its collicky, or doesnt sleep good. Give me a TOTAL FRICKEN BREAK! Lady? Do you have kids? Its friggin ridiculous and utterly unrealistic even in a fictional book way. You are a good writer! Leave this boring shit behind! People dont act that way and they shouldn't in stories! You chick flucked in a totally unbelievable way a series that shouldve been awesome! Get over the fucking breast feeding and a dad and house full if men whose biggest priority in supernatural world is that their friggin weak ass sister hadnt slept with bc she gas a newborn and they all are SO worried. Its jusy, i dont know how else to say it but its stupid. NOONES LIKE THAT! Youre characters have mens features but carry vaginas and belong in sewing circle! Come ON! YOUR BETTER THAN THIS!
I love Izzy, Oliver, and the Grimlocks. I have to agree with another reviewer this mystery wasn’t as high energy, but the characters kept me going.
The developing of Izzy’s character is enjoyable. I can’t wait to see where her path takes. I imagine Izzy’s life will never be easy, but she has the sassy and people to help her through it. I do think Aunt Max is right though and would imagine Izzy will one day find she thought too much of herself and will have to walk through that. Hard times, but good character development.
I am also enjoying her growing relationship with Oliver and hopefully more with Brett. It sounds like they were the uncles she doesn’t remember she had.
Overall, I enjoyed Only the Quiet as much as I did Only the Lonely. Maybe I should have waited a bit longer after it’s release to read it, because I can’t wait for Izzy’s story to continue and I know I will have to.
A wonderful read to join the others. A terrific link with the Grimlocks and our new main character Izzy who fits in seamlessly into the chaos. A plot of magic, humour and ghosts but actually not a lot of reaping. Sarky, arrogant and unafraid to voice their opinions - you will either love or hate the characters. Me I can't wait for the next book. She has been trying to find out more about her parents, trying to distance herself from the Grimlocks and feeling guilty about the way she had to kill her employee. Now Oliver wants her to pick a replacement and a group of deaf children are due to tour. The tour ends badly with a blackout and a murder. Add in a reaper who didn't want to die, a baby that won't stop crying, the secrets of the library, the Grimlocks in all their glory, a man she's afraid to let into her life, a crowd of ghosts and sprinkle with a liberal dose of magic. Will they all survive?
I normally enjoy Me. Lee's books. This one had so many inconsistencies, they made it difficult to focus on the plot. Most are minor, it's just that they add up. For example, a character who asked for a Jack and Coke later says she doesn't drink whiskey and someone who is described as a paternal great-grandfather actually traces up through the maternal line. Those are just two examples of several issues where story details within this book. There are also continuity issues between this book and the first in the series, such as a stuffed dog described as a gift from Santa in book one becoming a birthday present from a family friend in book two.
Ms. Lee, you have entertaining story lines. Unfortunately, these continuity goofs distract from them. Please either slow down enough to reduce these mistakes or find yourself a couple of good beta readers to help.
Izzy is still finding her feet and trying to get to the bottom of what happened to her parents. Oliver is still holding back. Braden is still determined to win Izzy's heart. Aiden and Jerry both want Aisling to stand for themselves for the wedding. Cillian wants to find the missing books. Redmond to win a bet. Cormack to keep everyone safe. All the Grimlocks want Lily to settle down and sleep. They also all want to be Cormack's favourite!!
Can they work out what happened to the deaf school teacher? Send the ghosts onwards? Save Granger? And end whatever it is that's causing the problems?
Of course but it won't be easy and it will take a fight between Aisling and Angelina to end it once and for all!!
Funny laugh out loud wit.. desperately waiting for more information on Izzy's parents..
I've really enjoyed the Death Gate series so far, especially because it's a spinoff of the Grim series. Those characters are some of my favorites, so I was happy to see that they continue to make regular appearances in these books. In this installment, Izzy and Braden are growing closer, and are working toward a relationship. There's an intriguing situation involving some ghosts who are unable to communicate why they are still on the earthly plane. It's clear that they need Izzy's help to find their way home. Izzy has become somewhat of a regular at Grimlock Manor. Highly recommend this series to cozy mystery lovers, paranormal fans, and fans of Amanda M. Lee's writing.
This is by far my favorite author and I read at least a book a day! When I see she has a new release I get so excited! Then I am sad when I finish it! I love this new series and then again I haven’t found one book I don’t like in any of her work, they just keep getting better and better! I am constantly looking in the book sales to find when her next work is coming out! Just one thought though, I actually feel bad for Angelina! I know I know, but I do! I kinda wish they could make up, or that she didn’t have such a bad childhood with her mother! That would be something if they could begin a friendship! Maybe Angelina could be Lily’s godmother! Just a thought! Lol!
With possibly my favourite of all of Amanda M Lee's character groups, I eagerly await every instalment featuring the Grimlocks. Izzy and Braden are delightful and their budding romance is a joy to read, despite all the usual death, drama and danger around them. No matter what though, there is always a chance to play shark attack, sock and have a themed meal :-) With Cormack in super protective Grandad mode, Izzy proves herself to be both incredibly powerful and resourceful and an invaluable addition to the Grimlock crowd. Despite the many voices of the family, Izzy stands out and the author cleverly manages to make each voice unique and funny. As ever a hugely entertaining and heart warming read.
Only the Quiet was a funny little for a book with Grimlocks in it...lol
Izzy, Braden, Ollie and the rest of the Grimlock family are all back with another awesome supernatural mystery to solve, a heap of fun and laugh along the way, Izzy gets to use her magic to calm baby Lily, Braden gets to use his charm to try and win Izzy over.
I am really enjoying this new series, its expansion on the Reaper world is fantastic adding Oliver a vampire into the mix adds another exciting element especially when he knows all about Izzy's past that she can't remember and I'm enjoying the little bits that are unfolding for her.
This story was wonderful, engaging, quirky and I can't wait for more.
I always love Amanda M. Lee's books, but Izzy's stories are that much better because of her connection to the Grimlock family. Izzy is a really fun addition to the reaper world and she is definitely expanding the Grimlock's view of the paranormal world! I love all the time-in's and the fresh take on this group of people. Braedon is very different from Izzy's point of view than from his sister Aisling's. Their romance is fun and funny! The setting of the gate has brought all new possibilities to the story and the adventures that everyone gets into are wonderful.
Izzy struggles to figure out Braden's place in her life and her spot in the lives of the Grimlock clan, while she deals with an aggressive spirit that controls a gang of ghosts that need Izzy's power to free them from that control. With the band of worker on Belle Isle and a snarky band of Grimlocks to help her, Izzy must put her questions of her past on hold to save the world-- again.
Very excited for the possible crossover hinted near the end of the book. Can't wait to see how the new worker will impact the story.
I loved the Grimlock series and was sorry to hear that it was ending. Yet they were just moved into a more expensive universe with more characters and more adventures and an even better series. Follow the adventures of the gate keeper to the veil between life and death in the Grim Reaper‘s and other characters that interact.. The Grimlock Family including Aislín‘s best friend Jerry and the river home-office are all in this expanded world and series. Just as entertaining and even more extraordinary then the original series. Check it out
I am loving this series! The stories are interesting, fun, and full of great characters. The dialog is both realistic and witty. The humor is exactly my cup of tea. I've lost count how many times I've laughed out loud. Even the main "villain" who appears in every book is a hoot! I'm thrilled I have so many books by this author to look forward to reading! Do yourself a favor and start with the Grim Reaper series before you read this series. There are things that won't make sense otherwise. I'm going to download the next book now.
Amanda M Lee is a new all time favorite author. She has a way of drawing you into a book and getting your feeling involved. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. I love the Grimlock's and all of the other characters. I love how she gets other characters from other series into the mix. I have never laughed and cried reading a book as I have reading hers books. The only other Authors that have manged to do that are Nora Roberts, JD Robb, Catherine Coulter, and Richard H. Stephens. Would love to find more that can do that.
For a spin off series this one isn't bad. It's not as good as the original, in my opinion though. I like the concept of Izzy as a character but I don't think she's given a chance to develop in a consistent fashion. Also, the character interactions and plot line seem a lot more forced than in the original series. Even though I don't like it as much, it's still entertaining.
Izzy is back and the Grimlocks are with her to help solve a mystery more than 50 years in the making. Izzy will need all the help she can get from her new friends to stop the evil being that has shown itself on Belle Isle. Only the Quiet is the second installment of the Death Gate Grim Reaped and it's definitely the best! As always looking forward to the next book in this snarky and adventurous series
I really love the premise of this series, but I just can't deal with everything being repeated over and over and over again. Something happens and then Izzy has to tell Cormick and then she has to tell Braden and then she has to tell the Grimlocks and then someone else has to be told - so not only do you get a first person account of what is happening, you have to go through the re-telling about four more times and nothing new happens in any of the retellings. I just couldn't even finish it.
I truly struggled to finish this book.. Book one was a so so and this one was worse. Everyone pushing Izzy and Braden together was annoying and it caused me to feel disconnected with the romance. I don't want to insult the writer but it felt like I was ready a book a teen would've written. I think if I was a teenager I probably would have liked this book but I'm not. I'm unfortunately not going to continue with this serries.
