Her mother was part of the women's liberation movement many years before it became fashionable. Her best friends are her mother and her sister, Dannis Spaeth (Cole), who now has two daughters, Amanda Belle Hofstetter and Maggie and lives in Utah. Susan grew up reading Zane Grey and fell in love with cowboys. Susan is a former newspaper reporter, with sixteen years experience on both daily and weekly newspapers. Susan and her husband have one son, Blayne Edward, born in 1980.
She began selling romances in 1979 as Diana Palmer. She also used the pseudonyms Diana Blayne and Katy Currie, and her married name: Susan Kyle. In 1998, her husband retired from his own computer business and now pursues skeet shooting medals in local, state, national and international competition. They love riding around and looking at the countryside, watching sci-fi on TV and at the movies, just talking and eating out.
FINAL DECISION: HIS GIRL FRIDAY is one of my favorite Palmer books. It takes the typical Palmer template: older experienced man who is gruff and somewhat of a woman hater and a sweet young innocent woman and elevates it through humor and good characters.
THE STORY: Danetta Marist loves her gruff boss, Cabe Ritter. She believes in happy endings but knows that Cabe who is a womanizer is not the man for her. She has been trying to keep a distance between them because she knows that she could fall deeply in love with him and be vulnerable to him. Cabe uses his womanizer facade to protect himself from women who want a commitment. He hasn't been able to stop thinking of Danetta for months despite his best intentions. When Danetta is in danger, Cabe gets closer to her and both their intentions fall apart.
OPINION: I really like this book because of its humor, its well executed story and the likeable characters. I am a fan of Palmer's books but sometimes the heroes are so bitter and cold that I have a hard time liking them. Here Cabe is gruff and commitment-phobic and while he is sometimes hurtful towards Danette, he recognizes his mistakes more quickly that I would expect and ultimately falls completely under Danette's spell.
Danette is sweet and innocent, but she banters and fights with Cabe and doesn't back down from an argument. She has a fun sense of humor and her ignuana is simply hysterical. Cabe doesn't like reptiles and the situations that arise made me laugh out loud.
There is nice chemistry between the hero and heroine and they seem more equal here than their boss/secretary relationship would suggest. I also liked the ongoing corporate espionage story even though the guilty part is obvious almost immediately.
One of the books that really showcases Palmer's style and voice.
WORTH MENTIONING: I loved the pet in this book -- an iguana named Norman who has an important role in the book.
CONNECTED BOOKS: HIS GIRL FRIDAY is connected with HUNTER which tells the story of Danetta's cousin.
I didn't particularly enjoy this book but it wasn't too bad. I love that Danetta had a pretty lizard alc I thought it was funny how everyone was scared of him. I didn't like Cabe at first and thought he was just an asshole and I hated how he tried to make Danetta jealous. I love how Cabe took her to his parents after her apartment had been broken into. I love that they finally got over their stupid shit and got married. 3.5 stars.

A really charming book, but it does lack something towards the beginning. Danetta is a charming young woman who keeps an iguana as a pet. Yes, you read it right. She's charming, and a complete contrast to her boss, Cabe, who is a bit gruff. Cabe sees his secretary as just a helper in the office. He carries a playboy appearance only to ward off women like his secretary, those who want a lasting relationship. As does with all books with this theme, it bites him hard as he comes to realize how much he cares for his secretary. (Of course, he has a scheming father who tries to put them together.) It does have a bit of intrigue woven within the pages, but it only enhances the story, as Danetta's life is placed in danger and Cabe places himself as her guardian. They have such a sweet romance, after Cabe makes an effort to show her that he is not a playboy and that he is in the relationship for the long haul. It also introduces Jenny, who is Danetta's cousin, and Hunter. (These two have a book all their own.) Anyway, this is one of the good books Diana has created, if you've read some of hers you know that some are better than others. This is one of the better ones. It's one of those that you can read in one sitting and there are moments within the book that you may find re-reading when you want a laugh. (i.e. the iguana.)
4 Stars I purchased a copy of His Girl Friday: The Marist Sisters Book 1 by Diana Palmer in Kindle Unlimited, and this review was given freely. A story of strong attraction, second marriage, and jealousy mixed with some steam and humor. Secretary and Iguana-loving virgin Danetta Marist thinks of leaving her womanizing and overly critical boss Cabe, until jealousy and espionage bring out his protective instincts. 18+ for intimate scenes.
I'm very disappointed. Normally I don't read this kind of books and out of curiosity read this one with hope it's worth the time. Sadly, it wasn't. The characters are acting and thinking like idiots. Like it matters that there's a virgin and a womanizer. Oh, yeah, the idiotic idea of the female character "He wants to sleep with me ergo he's in love with me." Come on ...
This was kind of interesting. Part of the plot goes into the sequel Hunter. Not sure if it’s the world’s greatest romance but extra star for the pet iguana! My brother had a 4ft female named Ziggy!
This is a book that did NOT age well. I could cope with all Cabe's bemoaning Danetta's virginity. All. The. Time. I could just about cope with his smoking (remembering that yes, there are still people who smoke). I could even cope with his alpha-ness. But jumpin' jehozaphat! I could NOT cope with Danetta's crazy morality. And I'm NOT talking about her being a virgin at 23. Seriously. I'm not. Really and truly. Trust me on this. But she seemed to have no clue about the freakin' MECHANICS of sex. Also her insistance on birth control not working. Like ever. This was first published in 1989. Post AIDS. So people had pretty damn good reasons for engaging in safe sex. Rant over.
It's all too bad because this had some great things going for it. An older virgin in a "contemporary". An iguana. Uh... the iguana? No, really. Danetta had some great lines and POV (other than her bizarro attitude towards birth control's failure rates).
The plot sort of fell apart at the end. I know it was a bit of a set up for the sequel, but still.
There has only ever been one man for young Danetta Marist...but he's the one she can never have. That's gruff, handsome boss Cabe Ritter, whose mere glance makes her spine tingle and her heart race. And then there was that heart-stopping kiss in his office. But Danetta believes in marriage and happily-ever-afters. And everyone knows Cabe is a terrible womanizer... Deep down, Cabe is no playboy. Long ago, he put up a facade to protect himself from any woman--like his alluring secretary--who wanted a commitment from him. Cabe knows that young, fresh and deliciously tempting Danetta has a lot to learn about love. But now that he has held her in his arms once, he decides that he'll be the man to teach her...for the rest of their lives. This is the kind of love ever girl 'dreams' about. It's our dreams lived through Dani! 5 stars.
I first read the Outsider and wanted to find some of the characters to fill as I felt something was missing.
This is about a commitment phobe who's is forced to face his fears by an innocent. He doesn't treat her well & continually confusing her but when her safety is treated his manoeuvre opens old, throws him off balance & clarifies his position.
It's sweet light read with a touch of industrial espionage. Hunter would fill in more gaps but a costly novella even in Kindle.
During my reading, I didn't know whom I wanted to shake the most: the hero for being so close-minded and sometimes so cold heartead to her emotions or the heroine for being so indecisive and so stickler for principles. Plus, the hero spends most of his time smoking. He smells cigarette (it's often written in the book especially when he kissed her!) I know it was frequent at this time (1989) but Irk)! And there were definitely too much repetitions!
It's been a while since I read Diana Palmer. I loved it.
Sure the story's definitely have the similarity with Diana Palmer's other books, but I enjoyed it anyway. Mostly because Cabe (or Gabe?) is pretty annoying towards Danetta and I missed that. She's a bit annoying too to be honest, because she's so naive but then again she's a shy virgin. Though I'm a virgin but I'm not like her. LOL.
I loved it. Can't wait to read the rest of Diana Palmer's book! :)
I'm certain this is a reissue or a new date for email release bc it seemed a little older. Another dominant, womanizing boss falls helplessly in love w/ his much younger, innocent secretary. I don't understand why they all have to get pregnant right away either. Disappointing.
