From infancy to maturity, what Ye Zhou dislikes the most was “two”.

The reasons were: he was ranked second at home, he had been forever ranked second at school, no matter how diligently he worked and tried, he couldn’t shake off that “second” curse. What was more exasperating was that, at University, not only was he ranked second, but even his appearance that he was proud of had to be classified as second best!

Why can’t I obtain the first place!

The eternal second will rise!

Then, Ye Zhou, after his vigorous efforts finally rises and the result was… the first became his boyfriend.

This is the story of a man who has been forced to be “second” and how he became the first, most popular.

Protagonists: Ye Zhou, Shang Jin.

3.5 stars. This was just cute! But also an excellent slow burn romance with terrifically imperfect characters. These guys might have made their way to each other long before they did but for their hilariously interfering roommates. They meant well and couldn't be faulted for their sincerity.

However, once Ye Zhou and Shang Jin finally got past all the roadblocks, the romance was sweet and made me happy to read it. 💕

A sweet, comparatively shorter novel which doesn’t carry a perfect protagonist that seems to have everything going their way. The charm in the book lays with how imperfectly perfect our characters are. They seem all-knowing but in truth they are clumsy, they stumble and they make mistakes just like you and I.

Another thing that pulled me was the ever meddling roommates. Although their actions were to the best of our protagonist, most of them were just useless but the hilarity it caused were worth it. In the end you could say that it was truly the roommates who brought them together in a certain aspect.

I won’t write much as this is not a book to be analyzed but rather a book to be enjoyed. But compared to others, I would really say this bring reality more to the table.

This was funny, heart-warming and had almost no angst but good tension and chemistry between the main couple. I really enjoyed it and the extras were great 👌 The sexy scenes weren’t many because of China’s censorship but the 1 described was fluffy ❤️ I definitely recommend as a good read 👍

4.5* This is a veeeery slow burn romance full of misunderstandings.
Ye zhou decides to trade some photos of the most "handsome and popular" student in his uni (Shang Ji) for some photos of his crush Tang dongdong who is studing in other university. BUT he gets caught taking the pics so obviously everyone thinks his crush is this guy in his class, Shan ji.

This is the first of tonsss where their friends and finally all the uni are convinced that he really is totally in love with Shang Ji and are one to help him to catch the boy 😂!

Is really chill , lowkey funny story , but I really end up loving the characters and feel a bit sad saying goodbye 💕

note: Happy ending 🌈

BEWARE of SPOILER

It all started from a misunderstanding. Ye Zhou was caught snapping Shang Jin's photo secretly and the entire Finance Department was so cool about it that they decided to help Ye Zhou pursue Shang Jin. Ye Zhou's denial was seen by his classmates as him being shy and at the end, Ye Zhou decided to just go with the flow.

Shang Jin was not tsundere. He was just iceberg cold. But, Ye Zhou appreciated it because even his little action showed he care. Ye Zhou was a man after all and needed to retain his dignity.

Both of them didn't come from a harmonious family. Shang Jin's from a broken family and Ye Zhou's from a strict family that only care for the No 1 place. And that was what brought them together. Outsiders may saw them as perfect, but they were not.

The romance was a bit slow because Ye Zhou was adamant he didn't love Shang Jin. Amidst all that, I like that instead of them spiraling into doom because of their family situation, they both studied hard. Shang Jin for example, even at a young age, accumulated his own wealth through stock exchange, that even without his father's inheritance, he can live leisurely for the rest of his life. It was refreshing to read about a character that did not depend of his family's wealth for once. Ye Zhou may not planned the future yet but, he also managed to live without his family's financial help because of his scholarship.

I wished more youths appreciated life the way Shang Jin and Ye Zhou did.

5⭐

Me encanta.

¡Ah! Me encantó.

Ye Zhou, realmente me gustas.

Me gustaría serlo"

"Como el caramelo de fresa después del limón, la dulzura llegó al fondo de su corazón."

So cute, I probably have cavities.
Really no plot besides these two boys becoming friends and realizing maybe they like each other even more. Still, the ending and the extras when they are coming out to their families really had my tear ducts working.

Super super fluffy, guaranteed to make you laugh.
Oh and they are in college NOT high school like I assumed. Just in case the age matters to anyone.

I think I would’ve liked this more if I read it when I first got into danmei. It’s not bad — just not intriguing enough for me at this point. Dropping it at 9% (Chapter 9).

i liked this a lot. normally i would give more stars but this was my first bl novel and it just felt a bit slow at times? i love that their relationship took a lot of time to build up and i love how domestic they were even before everything, with the pedicab and strawberries and stuff. it was pretty cute to read and the relationship was the sweetest and loveliest with no harmful tropes. i'd definitely recommend. it was just a bit slow for me since it was my first time reading something of this type but i enjoyed it nonetheless.

Ahhhh this was such an enjoyable read. I think possibly my favorite part was seeing the genuine development of the two leads from rivals to lovers. This story really took the time to build up their relationship and bring the two characters together in a way that felt believable and heartwarming. I was a little worried about how I was going to feel about a plot that hinged around others forcing them together but the roommates were so genuinely well intentioned that it ended up coming off more sweet than awful and they never did anything that I felt crossed the line from “means well” to “gross under the circumstances.” I even actually took delight in their antics, especially when it spread to the rest of the school.
I really loved this story and I highly recommend it!

This actually grew on me. I was dragging myself through the first 20 or so chapters (I was an idiot for picking up university student life, which I usually avoid), but noticed somewhere in the middle that the author's style of writing started to mature. Like if you were to compare the first ten chapters to the last ten, you'd think those parts were written by different people. The first parts seemed like they were written by a barely experienced high school kid, while the latter parts probably either drew from real-life experience or the author started doing research about how LGBTQ+ financially and emotionally cope with family rejection (not everyone can be as lucky as the MC+ML, though).

The reason why I usually avoid university student life fiction is that many authors never talk about what happens after university. Or if they did, it's usually written with rose-colored lenses. The relationships that normally last are the ones you find later in life (once you've been a veteran of learning from your mistakes, and once you've already gained enough independence to actually tell naysayers to eff it). This story did start out with the characters as 2nd year uni students, but it ends with them in graduate school, so there's a lot of personal development here.

This novel is so GOOD. 4.6/5 for me. Hands down my favorite I’ve read this year so far - and I LOVED “I just want to be in a relationship”. Aaaa I got way too attached to these characters, how am I supposed to move on T-T.

First of all, read this. PLEASE. It’s so good. The story is very well written, the translations are also pretty good for the most part, and these characters are super likeable.

Then, I’d like to warn that from here onwards this is my least coherent and most unhinged review ever.

Ye Zhou is a perfect protagonist! I was a fan of Ye Zhou from the start, he’s hilarious but he’s also a really nice person, despite unintentionally gaslighting himself at times. Regarding Shang Jin, he’s such a great love interest, he slowly grows on you just as he does to the main lead and he’s just so akadnskfnsjfbajdnakxsjcbsj

All the side characters are really great too and I couldn’t help but want to keep reading so I could know all that happens to them.

This novel was also a huge page turner, it’s critical final exams season and I developed an unhealthy obsession over this novel so I may or may have not neglected my studies :( but still, worth it!! This novel gave me happiness and serotonins which I was really in need of. Reading it until 4 and 5 am might not have been my best choice but oh well. Maybe I’ll end up blessed in my studies by Shang Ye just like most their classmates, first and second place please give me some blessings 🙏.

Regarding the CP, they’re meant for each other, they love each other, let them be happily ever after. The way they’re fit just like puzzle pieces aaaaaaaa can we have a sequel

The way they go from strangers to lovers, all the steps in between, it’s all so much fun to read, I was never, ever, bored with this novel, NEVER. Instead, I thought about it all the time, even when I should be studying. So, if you’re like me and you can’t separate family problems and work, don’t read it during a time where you should be studying :| or do, and like me, pray to Shang Ye.

hope you have fun reading and all of you have a nice day ~

P.S.:

Head can be broken, blood can flow, Shang Ye with one heart, never hatred!!

SMALL SPOILER ALERT FOR BASIC PLOT DONT READ IF YOU WANT TO BE KEPT IN THE DARK

Absolute masterpiece, we don't often come across a well written danmei novel with consent, realistic settings and a decent pace of the story.

As the title says the story takes place in A city's University and talks about Ye Zhou. A poor individual who gets caught up in a misunderstanding which leads his whole class to believe he likes top student, and only rival when it comes to academic scores, Shang Jin.
I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out that his class was now dead-set on getting him and his sworn rival together.
Together with his friends, and even people who he'd never consider to be his friends an absolutely hilarious tale is told with enough moments that make you look away from your screen and take a deep breath before resuming you reading.

Our lovely boys from both room 403 as 405 drag you along on their devious plans and schemes with no room to think about what the consequences might entail. Every single one of them will have you go "I seriously love this guy so much" at least once, even Chen Shao who only appears like three times!!
although the build up towards the actual romance is slow once you get to that point you're dragged into a rollercoaster full of fluff and comfort making it all the more worth it.

I was already aware that their love would be a good long slow burn and usually that could bother me a bit. However seeing the way the story progressed and how active the side characters were in the first half of the novel I really didn't mind it that much.
I gave this book a 4/5 because even tho I was very happy with how it turned out I still felt like overal the first 2/3 of the book was a bit dragged out. It wasn't so bad during the time you read it but once the romance starts you realise just how little chapters are left in the book and feel a bit disappointed. Overall I would have loved to see more details about the friendship between room 405 & 403 but it was kept limited to the funny misunderstandings caught between the MC and ML rather than focusing on the actual friendship aspect.

All in all I finish this novel in one go, had to pull an all nighter as I write this at 9am, but I would definitely do it again in a heartbeat. If you don't mind waiting for the romance then you should definitely read this book. It's not all fluff and comfort but I feel like that was the beautiful realistic part we don't often get to see in well written danmei novels.

A cute college romance story that starts out with a whole lot of misunderstandings (as most of them seem to...). The two main characters are Ye Zhou, who's perpetually #2 in his class throughout middle and high school and now college, and Shang Jin, who effortlessly gets the #1 spot without even trying.

Ye Zhou is asked by his friend to take pictures of Shang Jin secretly, since they're in the same class together, in exchange for pictures of his crush. However, he gets caught in the act, and soon the whole class is under the misunderstanding that he has a crush on Shang Jin and does everything they can to push them together. And their respective roommates, don't even get me started on how hilarious they are in their misunderstanding. It's pretty cute.

I love the idea that both Ye Zhou and Shang Jin come from dysfunctional families, where they don't get any support from their parents, but they find that loving family support in each other. I was secretly hoping Ye Zhou's parents would come around when he finally came out to them, but that would've been too out of character for them.

They had some crazy antics around campus, especially with the Shang Ye pedicab. I love how it became the informal test god for the whole campus and thus all the students were invested in their relationship, which became a hot topic on the school forum. Shang Jin's younger sister was precious, and I would've loved to see more interactions between her and Ye Zhou.

The story was super cute and fluffy, but I'm only giving three stars because that's all there was to the story. I usually prefer a little bit more depth to the story, a little bit more conflict, but this was an enjoyable read.

its been a long time i didnt read slice of life.

Awalnya mungkin aku agak ngantuk, and i need sometimes to adapt with the plot. Setelah melanjutkannya, im having such a nice time to be more into the story, cuz its getting good.

Trope : stronger cp, rival to lover, top god cp (dua duanya sama sama pinter dan dipuja), y a o i, comedy, dll

1. Supportive friends
2. Start with misunderstanding, but well develop
3. Relatable parts
4. Light , fun, and loveable

Our cp Shang Ye are so adorable and funny.

This is an adorable short story that provides wholesome satisfaction about romance without excessive filler chapters. The coming of age school genre can become predictable. But, this one surprisingly was not. The main characters were likable. The secondary student characters were very funny and added to the plot. The antagonistic parental units provided the tension in a very smooth flowing storyline. All issues were resolved leaving no open plots. This is definitely recommended reading!

“Ye Zhou, you always said that you can’t beat me. You’re wrong. This time, I admit defeat.”

must every 5 star story be complex? is it not enough for two cute boys to find love in each other for 70 chapters? honestly, this was so adorable. so sweet. i have no words. it's like, most of the time you don't even quite realize you're going forward in the book, because the only thing you care about is the fact that those two characters are getting along so well and you're so INVESTED. it's just wonderful. i could go on and on about them, but i'm still so attached to them and i can't believe i've actually FINISHED IT. like, please, ye zhou and shang jin, come back to me. i'm gonna miss you two so much.

I wanted to like this more but I found it kind of boring even though it was funny at some parts. I really liked the MC (Ye Zhou) and ML (Shang Jin) though because I thought they were more mature than their friends. The ML is probably one of my favourite MLs so far because he was very sweet and considerate towards the MC. The way they both handled their personal problems with their families and their coming out to their families were also very admirable. However, I didn't like the pacing of the story and the ending felt incomplete and way too abrupt to me.

This book had me laughing and I like how the characters respect each other so much. There's not a lot of turmoil and it's a fluffy read. It's a breath of fresh air to read characters that aren't completely illogical and ridiculous. They behave like mature adults that actually talk to each other...what a concept!

Fun book! the Shang Ye number parts were always enjoyable and didnt feel tacked on, and the way misunderstandings were solved didnt feel forced either. Both main and side characters were very likeable. 10/10 would read again just for good laughs.

I'll make sure to pray to the mighty Shang Ye number next time an exam comes around lmao
