This might be the greatest children's book of all time. Hyperbole aside, I love this book. I loved it as a small child, and I have hunted down many used copies as an adult so I could gift them to my friends' small children. The illustrations of the grass frogs and the wingnuts and the junk man's 'copter have stuck with me my whole life.

James is a young boy who loves frogs more than anything. After his parents tell him he can no longer bring frogs into the house, James gets sad and goes to blow bubbles in his room. One of the bubbles completely surrounds him and proceeds to carry him out of his bedroom window and over to the meadow near his house and over a bunch of grassy green mounds. The bubble lands and as he gets a closer look, James realizes that the mounds are actually hundreds of grassy frogs! After introducing themselves, James and the frogs play games like leap frog, then the frogs take James to meet their friend Mr. Odds-and-Ends. Mr. Odds-and-Ends' house is full of toys and inventions that he has made from different materials that most people would consider to be junk. He then shows James a helicopter he has been working on that's missing one last part. James, who also collects odds and ends, just happens to have that very part in his pocket! Mr. Odds-and-Ends then offers to fly James back to his house after he says goodbye to his new frog friends. James is sad to leave, but when he gets to his house he's surprised to find his parents playing with his grassy frog friends!

This is a really fun book for children with big imaginations. I feel that the thing students will find most exciting about this book is the illustrations and the aspect of adventure. The illustrations are done with colored pencil and water color and are a great compliment to the exciting story. This was a favorite story of mine as a child simply because I loved the unique style of illustration and I also loved the idea of going on such a great adventure. This would be a great book for introducing a creative writing assignment in the classroom where students use their imagination to come up with a great adventure. In my experience, children love the idea of a good adventure as well as great illustrations, and I feel that this book incorporates both of these perfectly into a great children's book.
