Dead men walking.

Nox, the Coilhunter, is enjoying an uncharacteristic respite in the lawless land of the Wild North, thanks to many years of gunning down bad men.

When those bad men start returning from beyond the grave, rest time is over, and it's time to draw up some Wanted posters for the well-rested.

Plagued by wave after wave of his own past kills, Nox struggles between his own survival, the welfare of the Northfolk, and the hunt for whoever it is who digs up the dead.

Well I didn't see this idea coming.

This series is great. Nox is a superb main character, the modern day equivalent of Clint Eastwood, mixed with Stephen Kings Gunslinger and combined with a Sci Fi / Steampunk element to great use.

This time Nox finds that people just won't stay dead, and sets out to do what he does best - help them into the grave. During the travels in this story, we meet the usual blend of low life good for nothings that have plagued the wastelands for so long. A lot of familiar faces, if not quite how they used to look. The trademark nicknames are here in abundance, as are the quirky contraptions that make this series stand out (duck anyone)...

Now to the not so great stuff. What happened to the editing? As the book goes on, there are more and more extra letters in words and spelling errors, at times giving the impression that this was maybe rushed to be released. Although not full of these, this should not be happening with an established author and was mildly annoying.

Also, what is with Porridge? He used to be a riot, laugh out loud innuendos and over the top exclamations. Right at the beginning of this story, he is there in all his glory, but immediately feels forced. The oh! Exclamations that make him so funny appear all over the place, totally ruining the whole persona and making him feel rushed and fake. As one of my favourite characters, I found this really disappointing.

As I can't give half stars, this book has 4, but it is more like a 3.5 purely due to the issues mentioned. The story itself is gritty and pretty dark - definitely still worth a read.

Deadwalker is a unique and interesting addition to The Coilhunter Chronicles by Dean F. Wilson.

As I’ve been reading the books in The Coilhunter Chronicles in order, journeying through the different adventures of the main character, Nathaniel Osley Xander or Nox or the Coilhunter or the Man with a Thousand Names, I didn’t expect that a story about him encountering zombies was in store. However, it’s a perfect addition to the series. The land of the Wild North is brutal and difficult to survive and there are many dead, some due to the destructive nature of the desert, others due to violence, and others killed for their crimes and evil behavior by the Coilhunter. It makes sense that many of those in the latter group would want to rise from the dead to seek revenge on the Coilhunter.

How this happens, the mechanism behind the rise of the zombies, is developed in a way that makes sense and fits with the rest of the series. Deadwalker is a great addition to the Zombie Science Fiction genre.

Always a good read.

The prose have a certain artistic quality to them.

I suspect no critics of today would consider this literary fiction. Perhaps in the future that might change. After all, most artist are thought average or even below average in their lifetimes.

To me, there’s an undeniable artistic quality to the prose. The stories are all focused on the lone hero working through loss & pain while trying in their own way to make the world a better place. They’re a syfyish stylized version of the old spaghetti westerns from which Clint Eastwood became famous.

Most importantly though there’s just something about the prose an artistic flair that’s lacking in so many novels today. Plus, these books are just so fun to read. Highly recommended for any who enjoy western style gunslinger stories.

It was another good storyline...

Sadly, it lagged for most of the book and it took my knowledge of his past books to help me finish it. This book had more missing words or grammatical errors than I remember from previous books but in the end, story segments were completed. Antagonists were removed and new challenges took their place. I am certain I will read his next installment, mostly because I hope he returns to his previous story telling style.

Put that down!! It's rotten! I love the dead.

I love this series of books, it's so sci-fi pulp western just let's my imagination run wild! Who would not want to have a Mono Wheel of their own. The main character just can't help himself for stepping in to messed left and right. Great series, please try to read them in order, Heathen's.
