An excellent source book for anyone interested in learning methods of teaching reading. The book is easy to read and covers a huge amount of information with excellent examples. One of the first reading methods books I have read that has an entire chapter devoted to acquisition of spanish literacy. I highly recommend this book.

Since there's not a 3.5 stars option, I'll round up.

Over all, I found this to be a solid compilation of research-supported instructional strategies for reading. I got especially jazzed while reading the chapters on vocabulary instruction. I'd knock off a half a star (if goodreads would let me) because many of the sample lesson plans don't effectively account for group size, varying ability levels, or, you know, the amount of classroom time that teachers actually have at their disposal (a ten-page lesson plan is too long, folks). That's a common enough failing of many of these types of sourcebooks, though. My main reason for reading this was to preview it for a grad course for new teachers. And it seems like it will be especially useful for that purpose.

In general, it's a decent reference to keep on your bookshelf.

I actually did read this book, cover to cover. It will be a valuable resource to educators wanting to align their teaching methodologies with Reading Research. This book has a wealth of information, is easy to read, and is practical. A must have for anyone interested in the explicit and systematic teaching of reading.

I wanted to read this book to further my knowledge of teaching reading for kindergarten through third grade. It was a great book for me to spend reading during my summer break.

This is the most comprehensive resource I have come across. It is chock full of research based strategies to teach reading. I refer to it often in my work as a literacy coach and as a tutor for early readers and older struggling readers. If I was only aloud to keep one of my scores of books related to literacy instruction, this would be the one!

Wow - this is THE sourcebook for anyone engaged in teaching reading. It’s literally almost my entire masters degree distilled into a (large) single volume. Highly recommend for pre-service teachers looking for a consolidated source of updated reading research along with practical instructional method examples.

Very well written and organized. Very helpful for all educators. Future educators, new educators, and experienced educators alike. I only rented this book for the semester, but down the road I will for sure buy my own copy.

A useful compendium of all things related to elementary school reading--including decoding, syllabication, common letter patterns, spelling assessment (to determine developmental stage--I was able to see a number of my students reflected in the useful examples), vocabulary development and word study, comprehension strategies (only the core ones) and text structures. There are also sections and sample lessons for Directed Reading and Thinking, Question Answer Relationships, Questioning the Author and more. Notably absent is any discussion of Fountas and Pinnell's ubiquitous and increasingly disputed reading levels. It's possible that more updated versions of Honig's text (which I was not able to get my hands on and which is just too expensive to buy) do address "leveling". I learned a lot from Honig's text. There is much that is worthwhile here, even though this edition is now 16 years old.

I read this book for my Reading CORE academy class I just finished. This book has great insights for teaching reading for all levels and to help those who are struggling. It has great strategies and makes a good teacher better. I have new ideas I want to try next year!
