A page-turning debut in the vein of Michelle Sagara and Green Rider -- A gripping tale of redemption, adventure, and home.

Rose Trewin is on the run. Pursued by memories of her father, she runs from city to city, seeking normalcy. But Rose can't escape her past, or the magic running through her veins, the magic that allows her to slip through the shadows unnoticed. The magic her father once used to mold her into a mercenary sent to destroy his enemies.
Now her magic is growing and changing, becoming something new and untamable. Rose is unable to rest. Wolves wrapped in fog follow her relentlessly along the countryside. Desperate, she uses her magic to escape, but the shadows are pushing her towards the center of a conspiracy.

Now, her country teeters on the brink of a civil war as a Lord Governor gathers power against the king. An enemy, with magic similar to her own, emerges in the chaos of political intrigue.

Faced with a country at war and a king brought to his knees, Rose must accept who she is and harness her powers in order to save her country and herself.

I really enjoyed this unusual magical fantasy. Whilst it was quite dark at times, the story moves along at a swift pace. The main characters are well developed. I like that we get snippets of Rose's past, learning a little more about her throughout the story whilst she runs from her past and grows into something new. There are slight hints of a romance but it certainly isn't the main driving force of the novel. I like that the female characters aren't just some simpering females wanting to be rescued, or some cliche to prop up the males.
There were a couple of grammatical errors that I noticed right near the end which was a little distracting, but overall it is a well written book, with a proper ending but room for a sequel, which I would definitely read!

If you like Green Rider by Kristen Britain, then you will like Shadow’s Voice. Rose is a reluctant hero with an odd skill set and not much trust in others. The story opens with a few great scenes showing us that Rose is multi-faceted. She’s independent but not brash. She doesn’t trust people but she doesn’t hate everyone. She can and will kill if necessary, but won’t take pleasure in it. Pretty soon she’s caught up in a conspiracy to kill the king.

Normally, Rose wouldn’t bat an eye at this, but the king’s messenger saved her life and now he begs her to carry the message. She owes him and that is something she cares about. So off to the capital, a place she hasn’t been before. There she’s thrown into the world of the royals, who are also a diverse bunch. The king and his cadre are admittedly distanced from their people yet King Micah is also a kind and thoughtful ruler. Other characters often have traits that seem at odds with each, such as one character being both stern and caring. This is one of the things that really drew me into loving these characters as most of us are a jumble of traits, some of them opposing.

The espionage aspect was also fun. I think Rose, with her special shadow magic, is well-suited for spy work. Looks like the spies have also made a foothold in the capital and Rose must now figure out who knows what. Ducking into the shadow lands and back out, Rose discovers there are even more secrets: there are wolves! Yep, big, talking shadow wolves making snarky comments. This aspect reminded me a little of Perrin in The Wheel of Time series, who also has to deal with snarky wolves in a shadow-like dream world. Rose embraces it much swifter though.

While Rose is skilled with a dagger, she gets pushed by Captain Mariah Sayla into learning the sword from her brother Arnie. She also gets plenty of time with the horses and the Light Horse guards. I especially liked her interactions with Starlet, a large somewhat truculent mare who has taken a liking to Rose. I also liked her way of interacting with the king and others. She doesn’t bow or simper or such. She just politely treats them like people…. unless they try to bully her and then she snarks back.

The action heats up for the last bit of the story where all sorts of stuff happens. The king’s life is in danger, the spy revealed, the whispering evil unveiled, and the wolves called out from the shadows. There’s certainly an epic feel to it and I could not put it down. I really had to get some chores done but I blew them off until I finished this book. The story ends with a lot of questions answered but with the door open for more exploration. There’s a lot more magic to explore and this greater evil is still out there waiting to get punched in the face. 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Candace Bennett was a great match for Rose. She was great at capturing Rose’s many sides: independent, vulnerable, angry, sympathetic, scared, determined, etc. Bennett had a variety of voices for all the characters and her male voices were believable. I would have liked a little more variation for some of the secondary female characters as I sometimes got one or more of the guards confused along with the seamstress. I also liked her wolfy voices for the shadow wolves and her creepy sibilant voice for the Big Baddie was truly creepy! The pacing was perfect. There was an odd long, long blank spot at the end of track 13 (on AuthorsDirect/FindAwayVoices), but other than that, there were no technical errors with the recording. 4.5/5 stars.

Shadow’s voice had me hooked from the first chapter which I find rare with a lot of books. I was instantly pulled in and wanted to know more. The plot was a great pace, not lacking any action.

The main character, Rose, is such a strong female lead and it’s nice to see her thought process.

While this does set up for more books, it’ll be nice to see more of the characters developments but this sets us up really well. You could also read this as a stand alone as well which is really different to me.

Overall, a really great book. No spice so more young adult than new adult in my opinion.

I read this book in it's first edition, published a few years ago by a different publisher, and then had the opportunity to read it in it's most recent edition, which has been reworked and republished. Between the two versions, it is apparent that Johanson has grown immensely as a writer and author. While the plot and story line are the same in both versions, the writing style and editing has shown great improvement.

The story and characters were engrossing the whole novel through. It was hard to put down because you are always wanting to know what was going to happen next. While the plot was riveting, the shining element of this story that makes it stand apart from others is the main character, Rose. Rose is not a stereotypical heroine of a fantasy novel. She is tough and knows it, and doesn't apologize for it. She has no respect for authority, to the point of regularly talking to her King in a way that makes supporting characters squirm (to the delight of the reader.) Part of the enticement of the novel is finding out the small tidbits of information about Rose's past, which the readers know is very dark and something Rose doesn't want others to find out about. The ending of this book implies that there may be sequel. If there is a sequel, I hope the author explores more of Rose's past.

If you need other reasons to read this book beyond a fantastic main character, the world that Johanson creates is amazing. Johanson manages to create a whole world, with a complex history and geography perfectly interwoven with the main storyline of Rose and the plot to kill the king. This is also something I hope the author includes more of in a future sequel as it made the story feel very real.

The last thing to mention that sets this book apart from others of it's genre, is the author's treatment of women. This story is in a medieval setting, and were other fantasy books in similar settings seem to think women should be treated the same as if the story takes place in OUR world's medieval culture, Johanson remembers that she is creating this world and doesn't have to follow the same rules. The women in Shadow's Voice are not second to men, or are unique if they are fighters. One of the best characters in the novel is Captain Sayla of the Light Horse. She is a fighter, a high ranking official in one of the king's commands, and is one of the kings commands. The other characters do not consider this unusual for a woman to hold this. And she is not an exception for this story, as there are several women holding roles that, in other novels, would be a traditional man's role.

This book has it all - great plot, great characters, and great writing. Eagerly awaiting a sequel from this talented offer who has a lot to offer to fantasy literature!

I was granted complimentary audiobook access to Shadow’s Voice by Natalia Johanson as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Audiobookworm Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

Rose is trying to outrun her past in a world where magic users are celebrated and put to work in some areas and treated poorly out of fear and hatered in others. Rose comes from the latter and struggles to accept her welcome when she stumbles upon a potential new home among a benevolent king's court of magic users. When a would-be assassin targets that king, can Rose use her magic to save him?

This book is great! I loved it, I want more, and I just realized I've got a promo spot on a blog tour for the next book and asked if I can upgrade to review. There's action, fascinating magic systems, complex social structures, badass women, and a whole lot of radical acceptance of one's place and destiny that makes it satisfying and humbling to read. The pacing is perfect, leaving no dull moments, and the hints dropped here and there keep the reader ALMOST one step ahead of Rose the whole way. Simply put, this is not a book you'll be able to put down and come back to later. Read this when you've got time, because it's a one-sitting adventure!

The only part of this book that didn't quite sit just right for me was the growing relationship between Rose and her king. It feels almost Beauty and the Beast, except they're both Beauty and it doesn't really feel earned. When I realized there was something blooming there I felt like I missed something, and I still haven't figured it out.

Candace Bennett's narration is easy to listen to and quite entertaining. Bravo! Definitely a narrator I'll keep an eye out for in the future.

AMAZING!!!!! From the pacing, to the plot, to the world development, to the characters, this story did not disappoint.
I did not want to put this book down. From the first page you are enraptured by Rose and her world. I wanted to know more about her world, and the plot did not disappoint. NO SPOILERS, but while you could have predicted where Rose ends up, there was no way to know how she would get there. Rare for the first in the series, the people in Rose's book have already begun their character development, growing into who they will be as the world impresses.
Now, the story! We meet Rose as she is running for herself and her past, but when she meets a good and happy man on the road who then dies, she finishes off his mission from the king. From here, the enlightenment she brings to the king to the work she does as a temporary member of his guard are an unexpected but a relief for Rose, getting her combine a past she had missed with her present that she usually avoids. As this is the first in a series, we did not get to see the ends of the tale of Rose and her cohorts, but what we did see, WHEW!
A WARNING: do not get turned off by the first couple chapters, as who Rose is grows so quickly that beginning rapidly goes from benign to essential.
I cannot wait to hear the rest of Rose's story and eagerly await Johanson's next masterpiece.

Overall: 5 out of 5
Story: 5 out of 5
Narration: 5 out of 5

Overall: I absolutely loved this book, I was hooked from the start. The pacing is good, and Bennett does a great job narrating. Overall, highly recommend.

Story: Think fairy tale, but with a twist. There are some dark moments, but nothing that really makes the story overall a dark one. The characters were well-developed, and I loved Rose from the start. Rose isn't waiting in the shadows to be rescued, and I loved how independent and strong she was. The world has just as much depth as Rose, and I'd love to step through the pages and spend a day or two exploring it. It was a fun read, even for someone who isn't in the target audience range.

Narration: I thought Bennet did a wonderful job bringing the story to life. I think she really captured Rose's essence, emotions, everything. It was easy to tell the other characters apart, and there was a nice range of different voices for all the different characters. I think my favorite voice was Rose, but the wolves's voices may have been the most impressive.

Rose is on the run. She is afraid that her father will find her and use her magic again. But her travels lead her into a man then the task of giving his message to the king. After delivering the message the king offers her a job as a spy. Rose decides to take the job even though her magic is becoming more powerful. Maybe this will be what she needs.

This is a great first book from Natalie Johsanson. You have an amazing world and a kick butt lead character. Rose doesn’t take grief from anyone which is at odds with her running from her past. As you learn about her past you do come to care for her and hope that her finds her place in the world.

This world was created perfectly. No info dumps and a hint at a romance that progresses very slowly. It was very easy to get into this story and the ending wrapped everything up neatly. There is an opening for a sequel and I really hope that there is more to come from this world.

I recommend checking out Shadow’s Voice if you like YA fantasy stories. I can’t wait to read more from Natalie Johanson.

I was truly enchanted by Shadows Voice. Johanson has a superb writing style. They also pulled me into the story further with wonderful character development. Rose is a consistent character that undergoes growth and change throughout the book.

Sometimes I find that in books that multiple perspectives can be jarring, but in this story it really fit. Getting perspectives not only adds to the plot and mystery, but also begins to give some answers and resolution.

All in all, a wonderful fantasy, a touch of romance, interesting world building, are all leading me to picking up the second book! Would absolutely recommend.

This was an interesting story with a cool magic system.

What I liked about Rose was her take-no-crap attitude, and how unimpressed she was about others importance.
What I didn't like about her, was how she each and every time she was assaulted, always left the attacker able to continue to pursue her and assault her again, which they did every single time.

The world Natalie Johanson creates is amazing. It is so vibrant and rich in detail, it was like I was really there.
The plot kept my eyes glued to the pages in order to read as fast as I could before having to go to work. I was reluctant to put it down, and when I did all I could think about was, what is going to happen next.

I loved the backstories behind the characters, they were woven so perfectly that it made the characters real and relatable.

I love the magic, history and geography that the author somehow manages to blend beautifully, like a chef who has mastered the flavor of a dish.

Something About the book:

Rose Trewin is running from her past. She would run from her magic too, if she could, but her ability to move through shadows like a wraith isn’t going anywhere. She hopes for a simple life, forgotten and unknown. When a promise to take a message to the king turns deadly, Rose must decide what matters more: disappearing into the night or the fate of her country.

My thought about it:

Rose is coming on strong! and ik really like that in this book.

It has a great worldbuilding and wonderfull characters. It would be nice to see more developement in the books to come in this serie.

Shadow’s Voice by Natalie Johanson is an incredible story. Is our protagonist actually a villain or merely made that way by life’s cruel circumstances? Who is the mastermind pulling all these people together and exactly what is he seeking? The mysteries and drama will keep you turning the pages. The cruelty life deals to Rose tugs at your heartstrings. Yet, resilient souls find a way to infuse humor into the toughest situations. Every character is fully developed and the settings from the castle to the Shadowlands are vividly displayed through the author's words. It’s amazing this is her debut novel. It is written like a seasoned professional.

I can not wait to read the next book in this series. Pick up a copy of Shadow’s Voice today. It is a winner!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The story begins like any other, with a new possibility. Despite the fact that it started slowly, it gradually became more action-packed, culminating in a big finale that made my arm break out in goosebumps.

Rose is on the run from her father, who has not been kind to her. She will do anything to cover her tracks, including murder. She is once again on the run when she meets an unlikely man, a member of the Light Horse. He has an important message for the king. Nico, who is killed by mercenaries, reveals the message to Rose. For some reason, she feels guilty about his death and feels obligated to deliver it to the king. From there, it's a race to find out who wants to kill the king and why Rose insists on doing the right thing despite having no obligation to do so.

Rose tells herself she doesn't need anyone and would be better off alone, but she stays. In doing so, she repeatedly finds herself in a world of pain. Is it worth all this trouble? And will her father find her and drag her back home? And can she trust anyone?

It's a masterfully told tale that tells about the long forgotten mages and magic. But when this knowledge threatens the balance, the shadow in her evolves. But is she worthy to protect it?

It is a gripping story with well-developed characters. The world building is fantastical, and also it explains why magic is disliked in some territories. There are many terrifying and painful encounters, as well as unexpected plot twists and a grand finale at the end. It's a fantastic story, and I'm curious what the future holds for Rose and the king.

I had been wanting to read this book for awhile - the cover had intrigued me and a brief blurb I had seen on social media. And then I couldn’t remember what it was called…

Behold, my amazement and glee when it came in a book advent box (yes, this is real!) from Caffeine & Legends and I recognized the cover.

I finally sat down to read it today, and it did not disappoint.

Rose was a strong, multidimensional character who, while stubborn to a fault, desperately desired a place to belong.

Micah was a young king, desperate to do right by his people.

Marian, a strong and independent captain, determined to serve and still keep her people safe.

These three set out to save a kingdom, failing to realize the fate of more than the kingdom is at stake.

But how does one play the game, when one doesn’t know the rules?

I cannot wait to read the sequel!

An interesting story of magic in the shadows. Our heroine is a troubled person, running from her magic and those who would abuse her because she had magic.

The author weaves quite a tale. Darkness and evil pursued her, but she was strong. It was worth reading, even in the dark side when the shadows tried to pull her to their world.

I liked the previous cover with the wolves better than the newer one which echoes Shadow's Voice.

“Rose Trewin is on the run, trying to escape her past as a spy and desperate for a quiet life. After a fateful encounter on the road she is forced to carry a message to the king and warn him of forces plotting to end his life and take his kingdom. She is thrown into a world of courtly intrigue, political machinations, and a king who asks too many questions. However, Rose has a deeper secret than her life as a spy; a magic she tries to keep hidden.”

Shadow’s Voice is the first book of Shadowstalker series. The book follows Rose Trewin, former spy who is on the run, trying to escape her past.

Rose is a strong and interesting main character with unique powers. She was well introduced and developed. Parts of her past are being revealed during the story. I would have liked to learn more about her past and why she’s running from it.

I would have also liked to learn a bit more about the world itself and also the supporting characters. Some of them were well introduced, but others were not.

The magic system was unique and interesting. I liked how the magic had cost and using too much of it had consequences. The storyline itself was quite interesting with some twist and turns.

The pacing was quite slow, especially at the beginning of the book but it got better towards the end.

I wasn’t a fan of the ending. It felt a bit rushed and left me with more questions than answers. I know that there are other books in the series and maybe things will be answered in those.

Unfortunately the writing would have needed some more work and editing. I didn’t like how the author kept repeating some words over and over during the same paragraph. For example when telling what the main character was doing in a action scene her name was repeated way too many times in a short amount of time.

Overall not my favorite read but not a bad book either. The storyline has a lot of potential and after a bit more work and editing could easily be a four star read.

After reading Shadow's Voice by Natalie Johanson who is a Sci-Fi/fantasy novel despite I am not mainly into sci-fic book but this book grabbed my attention at first chapter, first page. The book is perfectly edit and positive through out my journey in the fantasy world. The story develops in next few chapters very intensely. Rose Trewin, who was living her life peacefully who knows since how long in a small town but an emergence of a character changed her life and the story's plot quickly and the story progress to her quest for answers she always seeks from life. Few of scenes in the book were boring and few were exciting.

Author has written perfect era of 17 century as if she had been there. Usage of old English words and product were highly highlighted in the book. but there are few glitches in the plot. The female lead is way too expressive. She sometimes make wrong decisions. Like in first chapter, she could have make a better choice instead of killing that man mercilessly at first place and if she killed him why did she needed to move out from that place? If she had to leave that place even after killing him why worth of killing him? There were many glitches in Rose's character. I will give mix reviews to this book somehow positive but negative as well. I will rate Shadow's Voice 3/5. Author could earn 5/5 if she would have worked on main character's development as Rose was too advanced in the beginning of the book which is a bit sharp for the beginning.

I was given an ARC through Xpresso Book Tours throught Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

When I first viewed the cover, I almost kept scrolling. I know. I did the thing. I judged a book by the cover. To me, it looked like a red riding hood knock off. However, something in the back of my mind told me to take a moment and just read the synopsis. The story did not sound too bad, even if the description felt a little cliche. When I was given the ARC, I cracked open the book with a little trepidation about what I may discover. Was the story going to be good? Would it be like every other magic wielding, other universe, books like all the others scattered on bookshelves today? Now that the book is complete read, I have to admit that it was actually pretty good. There were quite a few typographical errors that made reading distracting at times, but this is a new author. If there was a better editor, I would have bumped this up to 3.5 stars instead of three. This book is rather good for a brand new author! There is room for the author to grow, and I look forward to reading her next book and see where her career as an author takes her.

BOOK REVIEW

Wow! Oh my freaking goodness! I just finished Natalie Johanson’s book, Shadow’s Voice in two days!!

This book grabbed my face with both hands from the first chapter. Then it grew progressively interesting the farther I read.

This was exactly the type of thrill ride of a book that I crave!

The book jumps in with action, builds awesome characters that have depth and believability, it’s funny, then it creeps you out in a fog of dark. The best ending of a book ever ! Near the end, I found myself laughing, then literally two chapters later, I was crying, then the show began! I must admit, I was super creeped out there a hot minute, and I don’t scare easy. It was like I was watching a movie, it was so vivid and a chilling horrific scene and setting at the end,……and the villain, OMG!

I was so into the all relationships built, the scenery, the romance, the friendships and the interactions within the side characters. It was such a great addition to all the rest of this books world. Great world building 💕

I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book!

6 out of 5 stars if I could. Great book, now I gotta go find the next book….

Happy reading 💕

Shadow's Voice is for you if you love

✨ A strong female lead
✨ Interesting magic
✨ A slow-burn love story

This first novel by Natalie Johanson is well-paced (I read it in 2 days), and her likable main character, Rose, has an interesting backstory that will keep you reading. There are a fair number of typos in this indie-published book and a few non-fictional references that will pop you out of the story for a sec (Clydesdale horses and koi fish in a fictional land of magic?), but these minor grievances are not enough to dull an otherwise well-written story.

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, where I hope to see more character development of Rose's love interest, as well as more of Rose's backstory.

This is an excellent story but the beginning was so slow I almost didn’t finish. It took a bit for me to know Rose and find her likeable. There is violence and evil and also some goodness in this unusual magical fantasy. It tends to be dark in more ways than one.
I have two problems with the book. First, it would benefit greatly if it was corrected by a good editor. Second, I really thought the ending wasn’t one. I don’t care for cliffhangers but this story didn’t have a tease for another book, it just ends.
The story has its share of twists and surprises and overall was not a bad read.
I received a free copy of this book through Authorsxp and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
