12 books9 followersAs well as being the author of Blood Donors, Steve is a performance poet who has featured at Glastonbury Festival, the 100 Club, Latitude and was writer-in-residence at Battersea Dogs Home.
His second YA novel Nobody Saw No One will be published by Walker Books in Spring 2015, a gritty, witty modernisation of Oliver Twist, inspired by Steve’s time as writer-in-residence for the Dickens 2012 Bicentennial Celebrations.
He is presently working on the Arts Council supported book THE RISE OF MAIDSTONE UNITED, stationed as resident writer at the club’s Gallagher Stadium.

Romanul ne prezintă viața din taberele de refugiați, cu neajunsurile și lipsurile lor, lupta zilnică pentru hrană și îmbrăcăminte.
O carte pe care o recomand copiilor nemulțumiți de ceea ce au. O poveste care-ți rămâne întipărita in suflet.

Această carte nu ar trebui apreciată cu un număr de steluțe, ci în funcție de sentimentele pe care le-a trezit în fiecare dintre cititori. Pentru mine a fost o lectură foarte emoționantă care arată, din păcate, crudul adevăr din taberele de refugiați din întreaga lume. O lectură scurtă, dar care transmite un semnal de alarmă.

Child I is a book that tells a story of 5 kids in refugee camp. They are real events that happened to refugee kids across the world recently. Through this book you get to see the glimpse of the camp, and how these kids live day by day. How strong and brave they are. Living alone and forced by their situation to find new "family" while living in the camp is really not an easy thing to do for kids even for adult. But how they are doing life is so inspiring. How they respond to their situation is amazing.
This book is a must read for kids, for adult, for everyone out there. Please add this book to your TBR! It's inspiring, moving, heartbreaking but a hopeful one too.

Pare nepotrivit să îi ofer o notă, în condițiile în care naratorul are zece ani, iar întâmplările descrise în carte sunt reale, de la firimiturile de pâine murdare de noroi, uneori singura sursă de hrană, la buldozerele „harnice” care îi protejează pe copii prin distrugerea unui cămin ce le pune în pericol sănătatea și viitorul.

It was so hard for me to get into Child I by Steve Tasane, and when I eventually did, the ending was disappointing.
I mean, yes, this is based on a true story, and I appreciate this. But I had hopes the kids' names or pasts will be revealed.
Somewhere in the middle the story got so intense and emotional and I really liked it!
But other than that, not my cup of tea and really sad!

July 30, 2021The refugee crisis has taken a backseat with the virus but it wasn't long ago that everywhere there were debates raging about them. Incidentally all this reduces the refugees to nothing more than numbers, the children being lost in the statistics.
This is the story of a refugee camp told from the POV of a child who simply has been named Child I in the absence of his life book or passport. The camp has older people and youngsters, who have nowhere to go since they don't have their passports which have been either destroyed or lost when they fled their countries and thus they can't prove who they say they are.
This is the story of his friends, L, her younger brother E and a later addition to their little family, child V who are all unaccompanied minors. It is the story of their difficult days, foraging for food in the mud and shit. This is the story of their hopeful minds and courageous hearts, clinging on to their quickly fading memories of their parents or a life before the camp. Of the little bits of happiness snatched from dustbins in the form of broken dolls or half eaten apples thrown away by the soldiers who guard the camp. Of dancing under the trees on hope and half hungry stomachs. Of heartbreak when their little shacks are demolished and always finding the courage to go on.
It is an inspiring story of human tenacity and their capacity to love and hold on despite the worst of times, told extremely simply but hardly simple in its impact. It should be a must read for young kids and adults alike. Perfect for kids who read and have crossed the age of nine.

Refugee story that speaks to the reader through the voice of a fellow child.
Upsetting as you'd expect. A child, one of many undocumented in a large refugee camp, takes us on a tour of his life. He is known only by a letter, as are his friends - I, L, E, V. Some of them have forgotten their real names. They have lost their 'life books' (passports) and as such are stuck in the camp with no way out. No parents, no adults, they have only each other.
You get a feel for the camp, the smells, the shacks, the overcrowding and hunger. The children and their situation are harrowing. The style of writing hurts, the young voice quite clear and almost accepting of his current predicament.
There are some pretty shocking moments of inhumanity from camp guards, young readers might be upset about the content (nothing graphic), but it's an important novella on a subject that must not be glossed over or hidden from children.
The author adds an afterword about his reasons for writing the book, and notes that all the experiences are real ones that refugees have gone through, including some helpful websites.
It's a book that isn't a difficult read, but the context and emotional maturity required means it really is best read by older primary students and above. A very good choice for class discussions.
Recommended for ages 10 and above.

Cartea se citește foarte rapid, dar cu sigurnață te marchează. Bazată pe fapte reale, cartea este scrisă din perspectiva copilului E, care are 10 ani și se află într-o tabără de refugiați. De ce copilul E? Pentru că nu are acte de identitate pentru a-și confirma numele real.
În această tabără se află și alți copii, ei se țin unul de altul, pentru că mai mult nu au pe nimeni și maturii nu-și fac griji de ei, pentru că au propriile griji.
Foarte interesant de văzut din perspectiva unui copil cum e în aceste tabere și cum ei înțeleg că viitorul lor e pus sub semnul întrebării.

Being me, I initially thought this was a post-apocalyptic tale of climate disaster and a child living in a dystopian near-future camp. It isn’t. This is the story of a child living right now in a refugee camp. His experiences are taken from the lives of real children living across a number of camps and can be corroborated with pictures and video footage, according to the author. He is called Child I, because with no family or papers – which were stolen from him – the authorities have given him a letter, instead of his name.
What is both uplifting and heartbreaking is that Child I isn’t the sad-faced victim with tears welling in his eyes that we see on our TV sets during appeals from various charities – he is a typical ten-year-old boy. Those of us who have spent any time with children of this age will instantly recognise him – endlessly curious, energetic, playful and wanting to reach out to those around him. He tells us about his surroundings. The condition of the mud that rules their lives – where he sleeps, what the weather is like, what he can find to eat – he is constantly hungry as the unaccompanied children seem to be the ones that fall between the cracks when it comes to being looked after in refugee camps. But above all, he tells us of the games he plays and the adventures he has and who joins in…
The writing could so easily have tipped into sentimentality, portraying Child I as a victim, but it doesn’t. The voice is absolutely authentic. I can hear his earnest voice explaining what is going on – and managing to write as an adult portraying a child protagonist is a tricky business. Tasane succeeds in bringing Child I’s life to us in wrenching detail in this simple short book. It is both shocking and uplifting. It should be required reading for politicians around the world – and I’m donating my copy to a local school. Other children, luckier than Child I need to read what is happening in other parts of the world. Read it. It won’t take up much of your time, I promise, but if we don’t know – how can we all try to fix it so that Child I gets a name and home?

„Heute ist der Schlamm trocken und verkrustet und weht in meine Augen. Heute habe ich Geburtstag. … “ Die Geschichte beginnt, atemlos, gleich auf dem Buchdeckel und setzt sich auf dem Vorsatzpapier fort. Kind I (im Original Child I), hat es eilig, der junge Erzähler muss heute noch seine Geschichte aufschreiben, ehe er sie vergessen haben könnte – und Papier scheint knapp zu sein. Wenn niemand aus deiner Familie mehr lebt, du keine Geschichten aus deiner Kindheit erzählt bekommst, verschwindet deine Familie aus der Erinnerung. Sein Onkel hat den Jungen in das Boot eines Schleppers gesetzt, er nickt ein, hat kein Geld und keinen Pass mehr, als er aufwacht. Ein Pass erzählt die Geschichte eines Menschen – Biografie, Erinnerung und Identität vereinen sich hier. Wer keinen Pass hat, hat damit kein Buch seines Lebens und auch keinen Geburtstag – darum ist der zehnte Geburtstag des Jungen genau heute.
Der Junge I lebt in einem Flüchtlingslager und bildet mit den Kindern L, E und V eine eingeschworene Gemeinschaft. Die Buchstaben signalisieren ihre Zusammengehörigkeit. Wachleute sollen die Geflüchteten daran hindern, weiter in den Norden zu reisen. Wer wollte, könnte in sein Heimatdorf zurück – nur sind die Dörfer zerstört und die Bewohner getötet. Wenn Hilfsgüter geliefert werden, drängen Erwachsene die Kinder zur Seite, so dass sie nicht jeden Tag etwas zu essen bekommen. Der Junge I schließt sich einer freiwilligen Helferin an, die in einem Doppeldeckerbus einen Treff für Frauen und Kindern organisiert. Verantwortung für andere bringt wenigstens etwas Abwechslung in den öden Alltag im Lager. Auch wenn Schule hier sinnlos zu sein scheint und jeder eine andere Sprache spricht, wer seine Geschichte aufschreiben will, muss unbedingt Schreiben lernen.

A story of several refugee children living in a camp told through the voice of child I which can make it relatable for children. Each child is known by a letter, because they have no ‘life book’ (passport) or official documents stating who they are and their ‘stories’. Tasane has cleverly used the letters to hide the identity of the children this book is based on as well as using it as a way to represent many children’s experiences in refugee camps. These ‘unaccompanied minors’ are left to fend for themselves in the camp, building their own shelter from rubbish and searching for bits of food wherever they can. Each chapter is called a word using the letters of I and the other children, e.g L I V E , L O V E, L I E, E V I L. These words relate to the events in each chapter of the book. I think this would be a good discussion point with children.
Throughout the story child I is always trying to remain positive and come up with different games to play with the other children. I’s generosity with giving gifts to the other children and making an effort to find food and to keep everyone happy and peaceful, obviously represents how many children in refugee camps feel- wanting to be free, happy, play and have peace. I think this book shows how all children are the same- wanting to be free and play together. The children in the story are constantly searching for hope and an escape from the camp to a new life of normality and to just be children again. The children struggle to eat even when food and comfort is so near to them, but they are being kept away by guards. All of the children are concerned that they will never have their stories heard especially because they cannot write and spell.
It is a very thought provoking and moving read which would be suitable to be read with children in Year 5/6 and I think it could create some interesting discussions particularly because it is based around current global issues that children will be aware of.

July 3, 2019„Copilul E” este o carte care te tulbură și care te consumă pe interior la niște cote pe care nici măcar nu le bănuiești atunci când începi să o citești. Este destul de greu să nu strângi pumnii cu putere la piept și să nu te întrebi în ce lume nebună trăim, care permite ca niște copii să rămână suspendați între lumi, niște pui de om care și așa au fost groaznic încercați de viață, căci sunt copii de refugiați, siliți să fugă pe mare departe de casele lor și de tot ceea ce le era cunoscut, ba chiar sunt martori ai unor atrocități de nedescris, căci asistă la bombardamente, la împușcături pe stradă și la râuri de sânge, își pierd părinții, frații și rudele apropiate și devin doar niște dezrădăcinați.

Narator de 10 ani, ficțiune bazată pe fapte reale, "Copilul E" e despre foame și noroi. E drama unor copii de refugiați, orfani de părinți, de țară și de propria identitate, suspendați între lumi, dezrădăcinați ai sorții, înfrigurați și înfometați, umblând prin gunoaie și resturi.
Cartea se citește cu revoltă, cu emoție și drag, cu durere și chin. Printre tabere distruse, bombardamente, împușcături coexistă jocuri, visuri, amintiri...
Copii fără nume, fără nimic, dar cu speranță-n suflet. Iar copilul ce e doar o inițială, e pur și simplu o rază de soare, un omuleț plin de căldură, ce emană tone de empatie și duioșie. E o rază de speranță într-o lume nebună, plină de noroi.
Cartea se citește cu revoltă, cu emoție și drag, cu durere și chin. Printre tabere distruse, bombardamente, împușcături coexistă jocuri, visuri, amintiri...
Copii fără nume, fără nimic, dar cu speranță-n suflet. Iar copilul ce e doar o inițială, e pur și simplu o rază de soare, un omuleț plin de căldură, ce emană tone de empatie și duioșie. E o rază de speranță într-o lume nebună, plină de noroi.

Este o carte care mi.a starnit interesul prin titlul, un titlu oarecum ambiguu nu m.as fi gandit niciodata ca E practic e un nume.
Cartea este tragica, este drama unor copii dintr.o tabara de refugiati, care nu au identiate si de aceea numele fiecaruia e cate o litera din alfabet.
Fiecare tanjeste dupa parintii de odinioara, unii morti, altii plecati, altii disparuti despre care nu mai stie nimeni nimic.
Mi s.a rupt inima citind aceasta carte, nu as recomanda.o unui copil de peste 9 ani+ s.o citeasca.

Unicefin tarkoituksiin kirjoitettu teos, joka kuitenkin yllätti positiivisesti kaunokirjallisilla ansioillaan. Yksin tulleiden siirtolaislasten tarinoista saisi paljon raaempiakin kuvauksia, mutta pidin siitä, että tässä henki yritettiin pitää koko ajan edes himpun verran toiveikkaana.

Mă simt marcată de cartea asta și simt că va rămâne mult timp cu mine. E prima carte pe anul acesta care m-a făcut să o iubesc în cel mai dureros mod. 💔
Cartea e scrisă din perspectiva unui copil de 10 ani pe nume E (țoți copiii au pe post de nume inițiala unei litere), care ne prezintă ce înseamnă Tabăra, ce fel de oameni sunt acolo, ne face cunoștință cu prietenii săi I, U și R, ne demonstrează că îți poți găsi o familie și în cele mai uitate locuri din lume. Tabăra e formată din oameni care și-au pierdut căminul, pe cineva drag sau chiar totul și în încercarea de a căuta altceva și-au pierdut actele care să le spună povestea și au ajuns toți închiși în acel loc.
Toți acești copilași uitați nu aparțin nimănui, nu au niciun act care să le dovedească existența și nu par că mai au motive să spere la zile mai bune. Totuși ei își păstrează buna dispoziție și cheful de joacă, acesta e modul în care ei încearcă să evadeze din realitatea burților goale, a murdăriei în care trăiesc și a lipsei unui cămin real.
Tot ce e descris în carte e prea emoționant să fie exprimat în cuvinte. Ce îți distruge cu adevărat sufletul e faptul că această carte e bazată pe fapte reale, copiii sunt reali, tot ce se întâmplă e real, atât de real încât e greu să accepți că așa ceva există într-un secol XXI al tehnologiei, într-o lume aflată în continuă evoluție. Cartea asta trebuie citită de mai mulți oameni!
Cartea e scrisă din perspectiva unui copil de 10 ani pe nume E (țoți copiii au pe post de nume inițiala unei litere), care ne prezintă ce înseamnă Tabăra, ce fel de oameni sunt acolo, ne face cunoștință cu prietenii săi I, U și R, ne demonstrează că îți poți găsi o familie și în cele mai uitate locuri din lume. Tabăra e formată din oameni care și-au pierdut căminul, pe cineva drag sau chiar totul și în încercarea de a căuta altceva și-au pierdut actele care să le spună povestea și au ajuns toți închiși în acel loc.
Toți acești copilași uitați nu aparțin nimănui, nu au niciun act care să le dovedească existența și nu par că mai au motive să spere la zile mai bune. Totuși ei își păstrează buna dispoziție și cheful de joacă, acesta e modul în care ei încearcă să evadeze din realitatea burților goale, a murdăriei în care trăiesc și a lipsei unui cămin real.

Olipa vaikuttava kirja! Lyhyt, suht isotekstinen, joten nopea lukea. Kirja pakolaisleirissä asuvista lapisista, perustuu oikeiden lasten oikeisiin tapahtumiin. Tosi hyvä vinkattava nuorille!

Kirjoitettu kuvaus lapsen silmin niiden lukemattomien verkkoaitojen takaa, jossa pakolaisia jumiutetaan epäinhimillisissä oloissa. Ryhmä lapsia, jotka on nimetty aakkosin, kertovat mutaisesta, likaisesta ja väkivallan täyttävistä päivistä. Lapsi i ja muut tarinassa mukana olevat lapset ovat nimettömällä leirillä ilman vanhempia, ilman "henkikirjaa" joka oikeuttaisi leiriltä poispääsyn ja ilman ruokaa. Ainoa nimetty aikuinen on lapsia ja nuoria auttavan bussin vetäjä Christy ja tämän lähes aikuinen poika C. (C:llä on nimi, mutta jotta hän ei tuntisi oloaan ulkopuoliseksi hän haluaa, että häntä kutsutaan C:ksi.)
Tarina ei varsinaisesti kerro mihin pakolaisleiriin tai maahan Lapsi I:n tarina sijoittuu, mutta sillä ei tarinan kannalta ole merkitystä. Huonot olot ja menneisyyden, ja nykyhetken, koettu väkivalta on rajua ja äkkinäistä. Lapset leikkivät puutikuilla ja vanhoilla langanpätkillä, koska muuta ei ole.
En tiedä mille ikäryhmälle kirjaa voisi suositella. Kuolemasta puhutaan ja väkivalta on jatkuvasti pinnan alla, ehkä kirjan lukemisesta hyötyvät kaikki, koska Tasane kertoo tarinan olevan totta. Näkökulma leireissä elävien lasten maailmaan: pölyiseen, likaiseen ja huteraan.

Nu ma întrebați cum am reușit, dar se pare că în ultima perioada am parte numai de subiecte sensibile și care dor foarte mult. Și de aceasta data, cartea m-a făcut să tresar la fiecare pagina. Mulțumesc Dianei pentru recomandare.
Chiar dacă nu avem o explicație anume, o data fixa, un eveniment fix cartea te bulversează și poți sa alegi orice perioada pentru un război. Nu ni se spune războiul, dar e exact același prototip pentru toate.
În urma unui război apar tabere de refugiați. Refugiați care sunt de fapt oameni, copii care nu își pot confirma identitatea pentru ca si-au pierdut/furat/distrus cărțile de viata. Fără carte de viață copii devin doar litere din alfabet. Fără carte de viață trebuie sa supraviețuiești intr-un ghetou în care de cele mai multe ori te trezești cu convingerea ca azi nu o sa ai ce manca. M-a durut resemnarea oamenilor și m-a durut felul lor de a lupta în același timp. Fiecare zâmbet a copiilor, fiecare joc te face să lăcrimezi. Noi ne jucam cu cu cărți de joc? Ei se jucau cu cărți de viață făcute din frunze. Ei se luptau pentru o pereche de încălțăminte? Noi boceam ca mama nu ne ia pe ai mai scumpi. Noi ne jucam de-a mama și de-a tata cu păpușile? Ei bine, ei își imaginau ca păpușile sunt ei și visau la viață mai bună. Doar asa puteau sa zâmbească. Mi-ar fi plăcut sa fie o carte mai lunga, sa doară mai puțin și sa aibă un final mai fericit, dar nu a fost sa fie.
Oficial am devenit o bocitoare ca să știți, iar la cartea asta nu ai cum altfel.

🧒 Cartea este scrisă din perspectiva unui copil în vârstă de 10 ani, aflat într-o tabără de refugiați. Împreună cu ceilalți copii, care nu au niciun nume (sunt reprezentați de litere), luptă zilnic pentru a-și câștiga hrana. Modul în care este descrisă toată acțiunea este unul emoționant și te face să empatizezi cu fiecare personaj. Acesta este unul dintre lucrurile pe care l-am apreciat mult la carte.
🧒 Apoi, mi-a plăcut faptul că, deși situațiile erau cât se poate de triste și nedrepte, prezentau cruntul adevăr. Dacă stăm să ne gândim un pic la situația din ziua de azi din asemenea locuri, nu găsim mari diferențe. Și, din păcate, chiar este dezamăgitor. Nu vreau să vă dau spoiler, așa că vă las pe voi să descoperiți povestea.
🧒 Ultimul aspect pe care l-am luat în considerare la punctaj s-a legat de învățăturile pe care le poți trage din carte. Să fiu sinceră cu voi, povestea te învață ce înseamnă o familie, ce înseamnă bunătatea, fericirea, umanitatea, iubirea și, nu în ultimul rând, ce înseamnă să fii un bun prieten.
🧒 Per total, a fost o carte frumoasă, ușurică (se poate citi într-o singură zi) și plină de momente emoționante. Cred că aveam nevoie de o astfel de carte și sunt fericită că am reușit să o citesc anul acesta. 💗

O carte dureroasă, am citit-o în același timp revoltată, înduioșată și cu un nod în gât. Se citește ușor și repede - are doar 155 de pagini - dar se uită greu, sau, mai bine zis, e din genul cărților care nu se uită, căci nu poți ignora sau minimaliza cele citite. Recunosc că, până să citesc această carte, nu știam mare lucru despre taberele de refugiați, știam doar că ele există. Nu realizasem faptul că seamănă într-un fel cu niște lagăre, și nici ce cumplit sentiment de lipsă de apartenență au cei ajunși acolo, goniți de război din țările lor, mai ales "minorii neînsoțiți", cum sunt personajele cărții, copii ai nimănui, nu doar orfani de părinți ci și orfani de țară, orfani de propria identitate. Încă un semnal de alarmă - dacă mai era nevoie - împotriva războiului, al răului profund și ireversibil provocat de acesta! Cartea e scrisă la persoana întâi din perspectiva unui copil de zece ani, Copilul E, și ne introduce în lumea lui și a tovarășilor lui de joacă și de suferință - în ciuda situației imposibil de grele în care se află, sunt copii, si se joacă! - dintr -o tabără de refugiați.
