Because the Egyptian artist’s ideal was the achievement of a timeless reality, not individual artistic expression, preliminary drawings, by their very nature individual and spontaneous, assume a special significance in Egyptian art. Drawing formed the basis upon which the arts of wall painting, temple relief sculpture, and architecture were formed. Often preserved merely by chance on papyrus or wooden boards, tomb walls, or stone or pottery fragments, Egyptian drawings make it possible for us to penetrate beyond the formal aspects of Egyptian art to a more intimate and direct contact with the ancient Egyptian mind. In the first section of this book, William Peck describes the historical development of Egyptian drawing and the tools, theories, and techniques used by the artists themselves. He also provides a detailed examination of the complex interrelationship of Egyptian drawing with painting, sculpture, and hieroglyphic writing. The second section consists of a superb collection of illustrations, many in color, arranged according to the varied subject matter found in Egyptian Man, Woman, The Royal Image, God and Sky, Music and Dance, Fable and Humor, Hunting and Combat, Animal Life, and Architecture. Each illustration is accompanied by a detailed description and is fully documented with regard to historical period and source.

ولأن أكثر من نصف الكتاب عبارة عن صور (148 صورة) للرسم على شقف من الحجر الجيري وعلى البرديات والتعليق عليها، فهذه بعضها ولكن بدون التعليق.

الكتاب يضم فصولا عن الفنون المصرية القديمة يتحدث في فصوله عن قواعد النسب والمنظور عند رسم الأشخاص علي الجدران او أوراق البردي، كما تحدث عن الادوات الألوان المستخدمة في العمل، ضم الكتاب كذلك فصولا عن رسم الرجل والمرأة والصور الملكية والمعبودات المصرية القديمة، كما اهتم بالحديث عن الرسوم التي صورت الموسيقي والرقص والرياضة كالمصارعة والمعارك الحربية والحيوانات والعمائر المتنوعة.
كل ما مضي يعتبر عادي جدا لدي معلم تربية فنية مثلي يعرف كل ما ذكره المؤلف، لكن جديد الكتاب في فصل خاص بنقد وشرح لبعض الصور والرسوم التي تعتبر اسكتشات أولية للرسم قبل التنفيذ علي الجدران، هذه الرسومات تعتبر كنز حقيقي لأي دارس يريد التعرف علي العملية التعليمية للفنان في زمن المصريين القدماء، فهذه الرسوم موجودة بالكثير من الكحت والتعديل فيها يتضح من خلالها عملية التعليم التي كانت تتم من الفنان المحترف للفنانين المبتدئين.
الكتاب جولة ممتازة في زمن قديم ثري لم نحيا فيه.

Despite one philosophical error in the book concerning an "aspective vision" , as opposed to the Met Museum's "idealized" one, this book is a tour de force on the subject. I guess they made it in anticipation of the Met's Tutankhamen exhibition that premiered in the Fall of 1978-Winter 1979 that I sent my parents to (my mother was a huge Egyptophile) as a Christmas gift. Tens of drawing, a solid exposition and a fine sociological understanding of the era. I learnt alot about the earliest forms of drawing, a stick on clay, and how drawing permeated the whole of Egyptian culture and technology.
Excellent.
