Adam Blade is the house name for the Working Partners Ltd. ghostwriters who write the Beast Quest and Sea Quest series.
Adam Blade is in his late twenties, and was born in Kent, England. His parents were both history teachers and amateur artists, and Adam grew up surrounded by his father’s paintings of historic English battles – which left a lifelong mark on his imagination. He was also fascinated by the ancient sword and shield that hung in his father’s office. Adam’s father said they were a Blade family heirloom.
As a boy, Adam would spend days imagining who could have first owned the sword and shield. Eventually, he created a character – Tom, the bravest boy warrior of them all. The idea for Beast Quest was born.
When Adam grew up and decided that he wanted to be a writer, he was stuck for ideas – until he remembered the old sword and shield, and the imaginary boy he had created when he was young. Adam decided to bring Tom fully to life so that readers could go on the kind of adventures that he always wanted to when he was that age… And still does, even though he’s grown up!
When he’s not writing Beast Quest books, Adam enjoys visiting museums and ancient battle sites. His main hobbies are fencing and football. He also spends a lot of time at home running around after his two exotic pets – a tarantula named Ziggy, and a capuchin monkey named Omar. These little rascals were the inspiration for two of the Beasts that Tom faces on his Quest – Arachnid and Claw.
Sadly, Adam does not have his own Fire-Dragon or Horse-Man. But he really wishes he did!
The Beast Quest series is clearly written for a younger audience and with this in mind it has the perfect mix of adventure and tension. Tom and Elenna continue their journey to rescue Avantia from the curse of an evil wizard and this time they have their hands full with a temperamental mountain man. Exciting and light hearted, this was a fun read.
This first series is quite appropriate for younger children with plenty of illustrations. Every book features a problem for the local people which must be resolved by Tom and Elenna, with their trusty horse and wolf. Tom does have a sword but in this book he doesn't kill anything, putting the magic sword to good use in other ways. A mountain dwelling giant has been driven mad by the imposition of a blindfold by an evil wizard. The damage he is doing causes earthquakes and landslides. How many fantasy stories do you see using the landscape and natural disasters as a challenge? This is a great way for young readers to learn and they can relate the disasters to television news. Each of the stories is set in a different environment. They are all very exciting and encourage both helping others and thinking your way through a problem.
The kids will love the good quality collector cards in the back of these books. If buying secondhand do try to get books with the cards. This is an unbiased review.
I read this book in one sip to take my mind from Thousand Orcs by RA Salvatore (which I am enjoying so much). This book was a little boring. Well I guess from now on, will be like this. First we are introduced to some poor characters which were attack insert name of the beast here , then they meet Tom and Elenna. Afterwards they do a chore or two for some small town which got themselves into trouble; and then go straight to save; not kill or harm; the beast while Tom do all the work and Elenna, that frail yound girl, gets into trouble, and Tom usually have to help her too. In the end the beast gives something to help Tom in the next book Quest and never to be used again. In the end the Magician comes and congratulates them and says off you go, you lazy youngsters, you've go more work to do, that us men cannot.
That's it. If you change a word or two, the second and third book and I think the next few ones, will be like this.
Oh well... This is what I get for reading childrens books.
To właśnie tam zamieszkuje kolejna z Bestii, którą zgodnie z legendą znaleźć można w miejscu zwanym Gniazdem Orłów. Mowa o Arccie, górskim olbrzymie. Zanim Malvel przejął nad nim kontrolę, dbał on o to, aby górskie miasteczka bez przeszkód otrzymywały zaopatrzenie. Obecnie jednak robi wszystko, aby utrudnić karawanom dotarcie z towarem do celu - zrzuca olbrzymie głazy, blokuje drogi, powołuje do życia błotne lawiny.
So the only reason that I found this book was because I am currently helping this charity called Seeing Ear by editing books for their online library.
I would probably have never found this book without them, but I found it very good. It is a children's book and has lots of pictures/drawings throughout the book which would help a child understand the story. But it's a very interesting book, and at 18, I still found this book engaging and fun to read.
If I can find the others I will actually read the first two in the series and then continue the series because I have grown to really love Elenna and Tom!! And Silver, the wolf!!
Obviously not as enjoyable for me but for a 11 year old boy this series has been great! He is just getting into fantasy and loves following the characters through their adventures. We read this series a chapter per night at bedtime.
I think my son liked the book most for the fantastical elements but would have enjoyed it more at a younger age. The sentences are structured more for younger readers and the plot is predictable when read by older readers. We are going to finish the series though.
I think the book Cypher the Mountain Giant was a boring book. That book I recommended to elementary school. I didn’t really like it because it could have been more interesting. I could of like if it had more action. I think this book would be for people interested in fiction books. I would like if it was not much fantasy. It was not a horrible book or good book.
I did not like this book because I like boulders tumbling down hills. I also did not like this book because I did not like the part when there was a rock slide and a mud slide. I enjoyed this book because I liked the part when the main characters freed Cypher the mountain giant from the golden chain.
By Cyper the Mountain Giant, the Beast Quest series has developed a strict formula (though the first book varied slightly).
Step One: During the prologue, a handful of brand-new characters are attacked by a Beast and narrowly survive.
Step Two: Elenna and Tom reach the approximate area of the next Beast. Conveniently, they run into the survivors, who explain the hardships of the area and their encounter with the Beast.
Step Three: Elenna and Tom start to turn around the lives of the unlucky locals, usually including the prologue's survivors; they'll likely have to deal with a quick crisis or two before they can set out to complete their main task. Why Elenna and Tom are the most competent two individuals in all of Avantia in spite of their pre-pubescent age, I couldn't tell you.
Step Four: Elenna and Tom go to fight the Beast. Tom tends to do all of the work; Elenna either helps or is busy playing damsel in distress (and I really hope to see her get out of that rut in one of the upcoming books).
Step Five: The Beast, now freed, gives Tom's shield a blessing of some kind, and the wizard Aduro shows up for pointless congratulations. The end.
All in all, if you're looking for a series of short, formulaic fantasy novels to help ease a young child into the genre, the Beast Quest series isn't a bad place to start. I can't say I highly recommend it, but it should at least be entertaining to the target audience (RL3, around ages 5-8).
The third book in the "Beast Quest" series, in which Tom and Elenna head for the mountains to free Cypher, the giant, from Malvel's mental domination. This book, like the two before it, moves along at a breakneck pace, with little room for character development. Elenna in particular is slighted as "the sidekick," and she has little to do in this one other than trade quips and be imperiled.
In each of the books there is a sequence where Tom demonstrates his supernatural abilities; in this book he manages to swim through a liquified mudslide and pull himself out onto a boulder one-handed, in addition to doing some amazingly deft dodging work to avoid Cypher's attacks when they finally face down the giant. Ordinarily I might roll my eyes or groan in exasperation at such a character's miraculous deeds - after all, isn't Tom the access character with whom the readers should identify? - but in this case, from the first book it has been established that Tom is super-human: better, stronger, faster than the rest of us. Keeping this in mind, I don't grumble about how "unrealistic" the fantasy action is; instead I read it like an Ancient Greek Myth akin to Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion. Beast Quest is really sort of "The Young Adventures of Ajax" (or Perseus, or Achilles, or Odysseus, or another Greek Hero, take your pick), and as such I have been enjoying them.
Picked this up as something I could try reading with my kids. They loved it and honestly I had a hard time stopping at the end of a few of the chapters. It was 10 chapters and the action was consistant enough to keep a 6 and 8 year old interested. If your kids like fantasy adventure this would be great for them!
My seven year old thought it ought to be rated 4,5 star (and the half star was because he did not like that the prologue and the first chapter of the next book was in it).
As an adult I thought it at times to boring and with strange choices of which details to describe. Ok as a childs book but gave nothing to me
For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-CycleThe more of these books I read, the more I wish they were a little more creative. Each one pretty much follows the same story arch, which is rather predictable. However, I could see them being very popular with young readers, especially those who are a bit reluctant about reading in general. The similarities between this series andEmily Rodda's Deltora Quest series grows with each book, but I find these much more straightforward and slightly repetitive. I am blown away by the fact there are over 80 books in the larger series, but again, I guess I can see young readers really binging on these. The adventure and plot in this book were still interesting, but after the first two books, this one is pretty predictable. Quick, simple read that is entertaining, albeit very similar to the first two books in the series. I found books 1-4 in the clearance bin so I will read the next book, but so far I'm not enthralled with the series enough to continue passed that.
A simplistic plot line to follow with language which is accessible for key stage two and upper key stage one. There are some pictures which I think children would like to see and possibly inspire their own drawings. The climax to the story was not as exciting as I thought it would be which is why I have only given it 3 stars. I would like to read a different book from this series to see if it is any different.
what was that first of all I thought that Tom was called Alex and don't get me started on his freind girl she looks like Micheal Jordan and some how they break rocks with a sword A SWORD LIKE HOW... I don't get it at all and the nice wizard comes back like just saying "you killed the monster yay we did it" ha you didn't do anything besides watching a 12 year old fight a 500 foot beast with a girl who looks like Michael Jordan like I just give up
Third entry in the Beast Quest series sees another successful beast freed from its trap, no spoiler there really did you expect anything else? Team Glade continues its theme in generic story with some entertainment although surely there will be some differences soon, as this same plot line can't be repeated one hundred times can it? Then again....
Tom is a character in the book. Tom and Elenna are going to free arcta the mountain giant. Arcta is a mountain giant who protects the land of avantia but he is now under the control of the evil wizard malvel. So Tom and Elenna have to free him. I liked that Tom and Elenna free all the magical beasts from malvel the evil wizard.
Adam blade really makes you feel inspired. His stories are adventurous because there are things like landslides beasts etc. Its fantasy because there are wizards and lots of other very very exciting things and last it is fiction because there are so so so unreal. Its also very mysterious because it makes you think what is going to happen next, so you keep turning pages quickly.
Out of the first three entries in the BQ series, I found this to be the dullest. Of course, being the third in the series, the repetition and lack of new ideas becomes more and more apparent. Yet, the mountain giant lacks the exotic fascination I found the first two monsters to bear. The village "sub-plot" feels forced and muddled. Meh.
