A straightforward thesis on Ikea's core philosophy, "Democratic Design". Many companies have convoluted mission statements full of buzzwords and vague promises, but this one is very straightforward: form, function, quality, sustainability, and low price. It's an image heavy book (so a very fast read) made up of several examples of Democratic Design in practice, showcasing the designers and design process of both popular pieces and commercial flops.

It all gives an interesting look into a huge, unusual company that seems to actually care about creating quality and affordable products for its customers and the planet.

Being image heavy with somewhat short chapters of just a few pages, it felt a bit airy, like they could have been a bit more substance to the images and stories. It did feature the designers, but I would have liked to hear even more from them besides the sparse and perhaps sanitized quotes. Many of the projects seemed to be potentially high demand, stressful jobs, and I'm curious to see how their experience as employees truly was.

This is a great book. The book describes how to design, how to cooperate, how to make mistakes. I love this approach to design and life.
