Although this book is definitely a bit outdated and may have some children wondering what a tape deck is it is still a wonderfully cheering story. The events will have children on a gentle emotional roller coaster as they follow Judge Benjamin as his family leads him into all kinds of strange escapades as they choose to vacation in Canada and what it takes to get one dysfunctional family there in one piece.
The reading is simplistic and easy to follow so for children who are comfortable with reading chapter books I would truly recommend this one. There aren't as many pages as those books written for older young adults while the occasional sketh drawings helps to break-up the read for those who may not be quite used to a lengthy novel.
What makes the book especially endearing is that it is told from the viewpoint of Judge Benjamin who is a 200-pound Saint Bernard. Along with him, the O' Rileys and many other secondary characters have such a nice development that it is hard to think of them as just fictional characters. Instead they will come out of the pages to greet you.
Again another older book that should be a classic to children and one that hopefully will stay a favorite to many readers - young and old alike - for more time to come.
