Creativity is all around us. Not in art galleries. But on the train, at work, in the street outside, and in schools, hospitals and restaurants. Creative vision exists wherever people are.In this entertaining collection of real-life stories, Dave Trott applies his crystal clear lens to define what genuine creative vision looks like. It is problem solving, clarity of thought, seeing what others do not see, and removing complexity to make things as simple as you can.The timeless lessons revealed here can be applied in advertising, business and throughout everyday life. By seeing things differently, you can think differently, and change the world around you.Dave Trott shows you how.
Dave Trott is a creative director, copywriter, and author. Trott studied at the Pratt Institute in New York City, majoring in advertising before going on to found the advertising agencies Gold Greenlees Trott, Bainsfair Sharkey Trott and Walsh Trott Chick Smith. In 2004 he was given the D&AD President's Award for lifetime achievement in advertising.
After having read two of Dave Trott's books (One + One = Three and Predatory Thinking), I felt compelled to read his latest book. I couldn't put it down. So many lessons to learn and I think I will have to read it again so as to relearn them. A compelling and exciting book. Highly recommend it.
One of the best books I've ever read. If you like creativity, you will love this book. Each chapter is short but very insightful and inspiring. I would strongly recommend you to read it.
Creative Blindness is a compilation of short, inspirational stories that give insight into the world's well-known and relatively unknown creative minds.
This is the most underrated nonfiction book I've had the opportunity to get my hands on. As ridiculous as it may sound, I could feel my brain expanding after finishing each chapter, and this is my second read (I plan to reread this book every year). Trott's words were handpicked and every sentence packed a strong punch. The book was barely 220 pages and took me around 2.5-4 hours to read.
I'd recommend Creative Blindness to everyone who wants to broaden their horizons and find creative solutions to the problems around them!
very insightful and eye opening book! so many of the stories were honestly bewildering, and i love that these kinds of stories spark creativity. everything is possible, you just have to think differently.
Very interesting stories with a small takeaway from each. I expected a bit more meat on how to "cure it", but it was an entertaining and useful read anyway.
To write this review properly, I should write in short sentences.
You see, Dave Trott has a unique writing style in which he tells a story through a bunch of short paragraphs to hold on to the reader’s attention.
Along the way, he taps into the real world stories of a bunch of people who challenged the status quo in some way and overcame creative blindness.
For example, there’s a mechanic who suffered from prostate cancer and wanted more men to get checks. He knew that statistics alone wouldn’t convince people, so he offered male customers 20% off their MOT if they had their prostates checked.
Not by him.
Another example comes via America, where Californian girl scouts wanted to sell more cookies. Weed had recently been legalised, so they set up shop outside dispensaries.
The good thing about this book is that Trott doesn’t tell you how to think, instead opting to show you, which indeed is the lesson behind one of his stories.
The navy didn’t believe a new type of engine could be as effective as it was until they saw a ship with it winning in a tug of war.
Great book, full of thought provoking stories that deserve to be properly digested, and routinely gone back to. Dave writes like a writer should: for an easy and pleasurable reading. As I was reading the book, I sometimes found myself thinking about how well these stories were selected by Dave to translate a certain message, as if they were invented for that purpose. With that said I conclude with one thought: When I grow up I want to be as knowledgeable as this gentleman. A worthy read for anyone that's even remotely interested in creative thinking.
Trott provides stories and examples of different people demonstrating creative genius in real-life situations. With a broad rage of examples, the author comes with a great question on the role of digitalisation and big data, saying that it play a huge part in marketing, but we must not lose sight of the fact that creativity is one of the last advantages we as humans still possess over technology.
This book is more of a compilation of stories to help us see how creativity has been done before. Its an eye opener to read these stories some are hilarious, some are clever and some are beyond my imagination.
However, don't expect a framework or any how to on marketing or creativity in this book. Its a good book to give you an idea and possibilities of creativity works.
I’m glad I picked this one. I don’t have high expectations but it’s simple and delivers the messages. It uses stories which make it light and interesting for the readers.
It won’t make you a master of advertisement nor teach you step by step about how to make ads but it addressed mindsets you need when doing marketing / creating adds. I feel it also useful for our life overall.
As mentioned in the title, the book offers tons of true stories on how creativity was used to solve problems in the past. I felt informed when reading each of the stories rather than experiencing any kind of deep connection since everything was short and random. I personally could finish each of the story in less than 10 minutes. This book is just OK to me.
Dave Trott is always Dave Trott and it’s compliment.
เดฟ ทร็อตเป็นนักโฆษณาที่เล่าเรื่องเก่งเป็นบ้า และยกแง่มุมหลากหลายเรื่องมาเล่าให้ฟังเป็นบทสั้นๆ ที่จำง่าย (story telling is the best way to make people remember and adapt on life) เป็นอีกหนึ่งเล่มที่คมคาย ตลก และนำไปใช้ได้จริงมากกว่าหนังสือการตลาดบางเล่มที่บอกว่า “สุดยอดเทคนิคการตลาด”
"Creative Blindness" this book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to improve their creative thinking skills.
Trott's insightful and engaging writing style makes the book a pleasure to read, and his practical tips and techniques can be applied to a wide range of situations.
The content of this book is cool, fun, and full of good case studies.
Such an easy and entertaining read. Dave Trott is probably my favorite ad guy. He doesn't talk about how great he is, but instead what he has learned from other people.
