This review is more like sharing my experience, in addition to positive feedback on the book. In the event that others might be looking for help, I hope that this is enlightening.
I like DD Kelsey. I subscribe to his newsletter and find his missives extremely practical and helpful; his care for others really comes across. His book is quite educational and informative regarding how our insides were created to interplay and connect. For many, as well as myself, this is good information to have. I have knee arthritis, so I was greatly anticipating the exercises and helps at the end of this book. For me, there were only a few that I am capable of - at least at this point. I have been trying to find someone who understands what I am experiencing. My recent visit to the local Orthopedist revealed only that my arthritis has gotten a bit worse over the past two years, but they seemed helpless in regards to counsel for improvement. It is not simply "pain in the knee" that is addressed in numerous YouTube videos, and in large part what I feel Dr. Kelsey is speaking to. I'm not a runner, so the final chapter for those wishing to resume the activity does not pertain to me. I just want to be able to walk again without fear of collapsing unexpectedly. Well, and I would like to hike again. However, I did find help in his direction regarding soft tissue and joint therapy and am utilizing that information.
My hyperextension injury of a few years ago caused trauma to the back of my knee, leaving me unable to fully straighten it. It was through my doctor visits at that time that I learned of my arthritis and diminished cartilage. Traditional physical therapy was of very little help, I was sorry to find. However, I worked my way back to good health by way of Richard Bedard's Saving My Knees blog and book counsel. Via his site and the chatter in the comment section, I began using a recumbent bike and bought a few pairs of Hoka tennis shoes, once I could walk again. That's also where I found out about DD Kelsey, who Richard speaks very highly of. Dr. Kelsey's newsletter helped further (as is also included in his book) in advising the use of a vertical incline plane for continuous passive motion. Added that to my home exercise room.
Unfortunately, I am now experiencing knee buckling. This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgIob... was spot on, describing my personal challenge. Not good news, but a feeling of discovery, nonetheless. For now, it's a brace and a path of exercising for recovery for me. I'm taking it, like everything else, a day at a time. Hope this helps someone else who stumbles across my review (no pun intended) in their search for help.
I expected this to be exercises to help with arthritis but most of the book was devoted to anatomy of the knee, suggested supplements, and the need for machines or devices to improve the knees or joints. There are some exercises at the end.
