Release #48 is a Seventh Doctor and Mel story

Penelope Faith is a writer I don't know all that much about truth be told. I remember kind of enjoying their Dark Shadows audio 'In The Twinkling of an Eye' but wasn't too fond of it overall. This isn't at the fault of their writing, but rather because of how consistently good the Dark Shadows audios were in their incredibly high quality. But I've always wanted to give their who-related work a go. Since it's Christmas I decided to pick this one up and give it a listen.
The Doctor's old friend Reverend HT Ellacombe has been out of touch for too long and he's worried. When they arrive in a small Victorian village, The Doctor and Mel soon realize that a devil with two hooves walks among the denizens. Something very strange is going on this winter and it all connects to The Doctor's old friend, but how can he be involved? Time will tell, but sometimes it's better to not find out.
Penelope Faith has written a terrific short trip that is gorgeously atmospheric, creepy, and full of subtle humor. It's a story that sits right at home in Season 24 considering how The Doctor and Mel are characterized here, but it also feels somewhat Hinchcliffe with its underlining gothic tone. It is a very simple premise, but Penelope manages to make this work to their benefit with a fast-paced engaging listen that is full of good ideas that are well executed. For once it's a short trip that doesn't need more time to expand upon its ideas, it's perfectly paced out and put together.
Overall: I'm honestly surprised by just how much I loved this once, wasn't expecting too much but this was brilliant! 10/10
