YA'LL. I didn't ask for a historical gay romance featuring an Amish boy in the 1980s, but I got it.
Our story revolves around two main characters. Theo is an Amish boy on his Rumspringa, which, if you don't know, is when a young Amish person can leave their community for a specific amount of time and enter the outside world. It is a chance for them to interact with society and decide where and how they would like to spend the rest of their lives. At least, I think I'm right. I definitely had some working knowledge before reading this manga, but come on, it's a manga. I didn't check out Wikipedia or anything!
Anyway, Theo is in his early 20s, I think and is just starting his Rumspringa when he meets Oz at a bar. Oz is as far away as you can get from Theo's naivete. He works as a waiter and also earns money by having sexual relationships with men. Oz is also a former dancer, and part of the story follows Oz's backstory as he tries and fails to enter into the dance industry and how he ended up working at the bar when he meets Theo.
Now, if a story can simultaneously be adorably pure and also sinful, I think this story is just that. Oz and Theo become close friends when Oz gives him a place to stay and makes sure that he gets a good job, but we all know that that friendship becomes a relationship before long. The interesting part of the story isn't necessarily that relationship, but more about what Oz and Theo bring out in each other. Oz has a past and has given up on his dreams, while Theo is really only just now seeing the full scope of the world. They are very different, but, at the same time, they really complement each other well.
The conflict of the story, thankfully, does not come from the fact that these are LGBTQ+ characters. I know that doesn't fit with the time period, but it was lovely to see conflict that didn't come from disapproving and abusive family. There might have been few examples of Oz not being treated particularly well, but, for the most part, the conflict is not about their sexual orientations, but rather how they will navigate life together having come from different backgrounds.
I loved this manga for so many reasons. The background provided for the characters added much needed depth, and the historical element was new and interesting, something I haven't seen done much with this particular brand of story. Definitely recommend!
