This was the first time I read a fan translation of a chinese novel, and yes, it's mainly because of The Prisoner of Beauty—an upcoming drama which we don't know yet whether it would get locked up in a dungeon for the eternity or break free from the shackles.
I was reading this book fully knowing how red flag Wei Shao is, BUT I wasn't prepared for the marital rape, that thing disgusted me the most. Nothing can justify that part of him. I am fine with his ruthless and bloodthirsty side, it was sexy, but I would never forgive the way he treated Xiao Qiao roughly. HE MADE HER CRY MULTIPLE TIMES.
Hopefully the screenwriter didn't include that disgusting part because overall this book has a nice storyline. No unnecessary misunderstandings because Xiao Qiao is a clever woman who always stands up for herself (love you babe) and no men could blame her because she is always right.

ML is a trash, rap*st, a pig a big walking red flag. I only kept on reading for the Main Character, the FL, she is the only reason I have given this 1 star, 1star is too high for this trash. IF Song Zuer and LiuYuning's drama "The Prisoner of Beauty" is not based on this novel I would have dropped it a couple of eps in, but the drama's fate is uncertain and I want to know what happened to the MC so I pushed through reading, skipping the 🤢🤮 parts.
It's heavily plot-based. We encounter political intrigue, war, violence, betrayal and most of all, the inherent patriarchy present in ancient Chinese setting. All of these only makes the situation of the leads unfair and acts as an obstacle to their road to happily-ever-after. To be honest, the novel was just this🤌🏻 close to a tragedy.
Xiao Qiao, the youngest daughter of the Qiao family of Yanzhou, is unparalleled beautiful. She transmigrates from modern times with the memories of the original Xiao Qiao's tragic previous life. So just like her peers, she embarks on the journey of reversing the fate of herself and the people around her.
Unfortunately for her, she is now in a war-torn era where the imperial dynasty is at its last leg with various warlords competing for the Supreme position. To protect her homeland, her uncle forces her to marry the only son of the Wei family, Wei Shao, the Marquis of Yan.
The problem, though, is that Wei Shao's father and elder brother hit the bucket in front of him in the battlefield because of Xiao Qiao's grandfather's betrayal. So there is already a family feud in place on the road to happiness.
On the other hand, Wei Shao, the male lead, is ruthless and cruel, ambitious, egotistical, often aggressive towards the FL. He is bent on exacting revenge on all those who harmed him and his family and ultimately unify the central plains.
Now, I admit that the romance in this novel may not be for everyone. If you want a doting ML whipped for the FL from the get-go or a healthy lighthearted romance, then this is definitely not for you. It is plot-heavy slow-burn romance where the female lead navigates through her hostile in-law family and the male lead gradually comes to truly love another person and be considerate of others, especially other than himself.
I definitely fell in love with the characters and their romance. I LOVED Xiao Qiao. Even in an frustrating situation like the one she was in, she was aware of her shortcomings but that did not stop her from using her advantages to work through and stand up for herself. She was in no way a doormat, she understood her situation, understood herself.
For Wei Shao, I didn't have much expectation, especially after reading the part of his previous life. He was an able conqueror for sure, but he didn't have any aura of a male lead. But his character development was *chef's kiss*😩😩🤌🏻🤌🏻
I went from being indifferent to falling in love with Wei Shao too. Especially his side stories were hilarious. Those complaining about him being harsh towards his wife, I just want to say,
1. Xiao Qiao was literally the spawn of his family's enemy. Because of her grandfather, he saw his father and brother die in front of him. His mother grieved for more than a decade. The whole Wei family could only rely on his old grandmother Mrs. Xu.
2. Do not forget, the FL may be a modern soul but Wei Shao was born and brought up in a patriarchal society where men can do whatever they want even having three wives and six concubines. He was a product of his time. To me personally, the most important was that he wasn't stuck as an egotistical pedantic from start to finish. But that he was capable of change! (Just so you know, Wei Shao was monogamous from the start in the current timeline).
Nobody changed Wei Shao., not even Xiao Qiao. He changed himself. Wei Shao became a better person for Xiao Qiao.
If we go by the standards of a stereotypical male lead, then Bi Zhi may be the only one who was in love with and doting towards Da Qiao in the whole novel.
Mrs. Xu was the real MVP, for sure!
Chen Rui was the biggest clown🤡🤡
I absolutely LOVE this novel. If you're into serious historical Chinese novels, don't be afraid of the low ratings. Give it a go. Trust me, you won't regret it!
4/24/24 heh this novel had a lot of sexual content considering censorship especially some rather kinky shit - all not explicitly described so shout out to the author for the masterful fancy footwork there.
I was actually ... 😅 after reading this kinda glad the drama won't air cuz the casting I saw just DID NOT fit the characters in my head and I could not see them playing it. Unless everything was TOTALLY changed. ML was a giant asshat, which in part I get, but also not cuz, giant asshat, putting all your hate on FL ... not exactly the behavior of a good/true man. Still definitely engaging enough for me to keep going though. I think for the first third honestly other than FL it was the characters other than ML that kept me going. He was almost the baddie here, so far.
C+ ~*~*~*~*~*~*~ 😐 the site only has chapters 120-130 (which 🫠☠️ explains a bit) and worse the site blocks ad blockers and is a nightmare of spammy ads
Found the full novel & started reading again on 4/18/24) ~*~*~*~*~
C1 😱 why is the emperor killing his concubine - oh to prevent them from falling into others hands. Bleh seems this translation was taken from elsewhere so there are 😱 no quote marks?! So I couldn’t tell at the end was she speaking to him?
C2 yikes so she was ~36 or just 20 when she died in the last life (not quite sure what they mean by past 20 years of the previous life) but she’s 12 now. (Sigh) and has been having nightmares since she was 10. Uh O.o sudden 2 year jump? (and their dad is 21 years older than them)
C4 glad her cousin escaped with her lover - hopefully they have an excellent life ❤️
C6 omg 🤦🏻♀️ I thought she was ok with marrying the Marquis but no she thought her dad could get her out of it/protect her. Girl. 😐 I get it thought daughter vs the safety of 200k people… I like that her aunt still cares about her daughter tbh 😹☠️💯 love how FL crushed the toe of the asshole who suggested the marriage alliance
C7 *narrows eyes* ok FL’s uncle & deceased grandfather are pieces of shit … so he was gone the entire half month (or longer?) FL has been there? I was about to be mad he didn’t go get her himself or meet her… I don’t like his shit servant though. 😡🔪 he better fall for her fast!
C10 I get there’s a grudge between the families but it’s a weak bitchass little man that takes his anger out on an innocent woman. Fuck this guy. I hope she goes & lives her best life and he CRAWWWWLS to win her. 😒 I hope that shit Wei Liang falls for her too.
C11 lol I like the “eat your heart out, asshole” look 💪💯 Chun Niang has redeemed herself from me thinking she is a pig teammate
C12 😱 she got kidnapped. Welp.
C13… uh LiuYan kidnapped her. Huh. When she thinks about “this era” I wonder if it’s the translator or did she transmigrate & have the memories of her past life? Or is it just a rebirth? 🤷🏻♀️
O.o so it’s “love at first sight” for Chen Rui who is ML (Wei Shao’s) enemy?
C17 smart girl I KNEW she was the one who set the fire! 💪💯❤️
C20 🙄🙄🙄😒😒😒 of fucking course there’s a girl cousin there dude’s mom loves and oh look here everyone already treats her as a concubine despite ML not taking her as one for 2 years. And there’s a mentioned yet unknown OTHER girl too. 🙄😒 and great her MIL loathes her. I get it but also ugh. Poor FL. Wish she could live anywhere else. So creepy he’s 22 & his mom is trying to shove his cousin at her - glad he flat out refused but. Ugh. Also JFC his mom is like a 4 yo. 😹☠️ her trying to explain setting his things aside - but 😱 him saying he’ll live with her (well, there now - same thing)
C22 Aha! And it’s finally disclosed! FL is a transmigrator! No wonder! (And I wonder which Wei family member she met at the shop)
C24 🙃🫠 FL has passively collected 3 men now. The ex fiancé (LiuYan), ML’s ~enemy (ChenRui), & ML’s cousin WeiYan.
C31 damn his mom is low. Sucks to be personally drugged by your mom. Hopefully he stops giving way to her now.
C32 lol 3+ handies to relieve him. I’m glad she bit him before he went further with penetration though. Go girl.
C36 lol EAT YOUR HEART OUT DUDE. Everyone wants to see your wife and even the great painter GaoHeng thinks she’s fascinating!
C40 JFC his mom is the worst in so many ways. Heh though FL was happy to be coitus interruptus. So amused the ~second time he tried (last c?) she literally kicked him in the face & he told her not to this time but was a one minute man and she laughed at him. Lololol
C43(& end 42) we finally meet ML’s white moonlight. 😒 Su E Huang
Yo 😱😅 c46 4x in one night - after the failed attempt as soon as he got back 🫠
JFC c52 it was the mom/her shit ass servant who ordered the box tampered with they are the WORST Oof a) I like how smart he is B) smart (but… ~dangerous?) of her to open the lock before him. Loved her honesty & directness though
🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ her brother is a pig teammate too poor FL
C56 awww I’m glad ML ran into ChunNiang & learned FL’s period hurts her
C57 O.O not sure how I feel about WeiYan dismissing his concubines Lol ML is allergic to the cat he got FL. And 🙃🫥🤦🏻♀️ author is good at writing subtle kinky shit (the foot job, cousin in law jacking off to the mural he made of FL…) but for actual sex man I dunno if it’s censorship or not but it’s 😖
