Over 2,000 years ago the Xandians were forced to flee their world by a horde made up of dark forces that had spread throughout the universes like a plague. The Xandian king and a handful of nobles stood alone on the wall against wave after wave of the horde forces as the last remnants of the Xandian people fled through a portal to the planet of earth. They've been fighting and protecting this planet from being overrun by evil ever since.
The horde continues to grow stronger as the Xandians have gradually had their forces diminished. When their queen is killed their last hope switches to the potential powers of an eleven year old boy whom no one has told may be the greatest magical force of all time. The day comes quickly for him to embrace his birth right and fight to save not only his own people but all of the people of earth and ultimately of the universe itself.
Living in a lighthouse as a child led me early to a love of reading. Despite what you may have been told the life of a lighthouse keeper's son is not all Glamour and Parties. There's a lot of time when there really isn't much to do besides wonder if the fog horn has finally made you deaf or watch your dad pull fishing lures out of different parts of people's bodies. (You'd be amazed!)
Two of my favorite houses growing up!
I read. I read a lot. We had a 'reading caterpillar' around the room at my school where every time you read a book you put your name on your color paper and hung it up. The teacher had to give me two colors because it was looking more like a worm than a caterpillar. I devoured CS Lewis before moving on to Tolkien. Reading has continued to be a big part of my life. I've moved into Alternative Realities by guys like Stirling and my guilty pleasure is Zombie novels. I can't seem to get enough of them!
I like reading about the extremes people will go to to survive. The ones who can rise above the rest and keep their sense of right and wrong. When humanity crumbles around them these flawed heroes stand tall and try to make their way. They go from struggling to pay the phone bill to struggling to keep themselves and others alive. I like to see how this either hardens or breaks them. I think these stories speak at a very primal level. I enjoy the journey greatly as I get to tag along seeing how the survivors manage and how the experience forges them into something more than they were.
I look forward to sharing the journey with you all!
I wrote the book so this review may be slightly biased! The book itself is out on Amazon and I really enjoyed writing it. Writing has kind of replaced reading for me lately. With both I love to immerse myself in the story and really live it in my head. Writing it all down just takes a LOT longer than reading a story!
A brief synopsis if you're considering checking this one out. It's a tale of magic set in the modern world. A tale of a boy who finds out he has an extraordinary amount of potential for magic. I can't go into too much detail without having to put up a lot of spoiler alerts but if you like epic fantasies and anachronisms mixed in with your modern day D&D with some light political intrigue you should enjoy this series. Book 1 is available now and I've already started Book 2. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
I loved reading this story! In fact I couldn't put it down until I finished it. The main character was such a likeable boy that I was rooting for him. I hope he survives all the author's adventures for him. Good job!
I cheated and read the entire series before reviewing. Read these books. Great characters and plot with the bonus of having the series already completed. Seriously. Read.
What an outstanding premise. I don't often read fantasy books, maybe I should. Loved the characters and the way they were developed. I think that there maybe too many "main" characters to follow, however, I'm doing it. There are at times, what I consider grammatical errors and word usage errors. I do not understand the use of "drug" when in my estimation it should have been "dragged". These don't impact the book in any way. But, I think my 8th grade grammar teacher in me had his hackles raised. Loved the book so much I couldn't put it down until it was finished and that was at 4:30 AM. WOW! Can't say that about too many books. After finishing, I immediately went to Amazon looking for the next installment and found out it is due to be released this month. I can't wait. Please let it be advertised widely so people like me can find it readily.
I enjoyed the world-building and back story. The author spent the right amount of time on each and I never felt like the book dragged in an effort to get either across. The plot, itself, was also well-constructed and it was clear the author put quite a bit of thought into it.
I felt the character building was flat, however. The premise of an 11 year boy stepping out of a fairly traditional, boring life and thrust into a leadership role where he has to immediately perform is a tough sell. Not impossible, mind you, but tough. And I just never felt like the author built the protagonist up enough to be able to sell that he can immediately become this amazing, near-perfect king. Things come too easy to him and everything is too pat, IMO.
Overall a fun read, but you need to be willing to look past some pretty glaring character flaws.
I enjoyed the concept of this book, although I had a hard time reading through the grammatical and spelling errors. I hope that this book will be edited more appropriately in the future for a smoother read.
