Bone Chimes is Rufty's first collection of short stories and I have to say that I think it's some of his best work. There are so many gems hidden away in Bone Chimes that each new story you read will be your new favorite that replaced the story before it. The development is excellent and has a very 1980s heyday of horror cinema to it. In case you were wondering, that's a good thing in my book. The influences of Stephen King, Robert McCammon, Bentley Little, Charles L. Grant, John Carpenter and David Cronenberg are all there.

Love Seat felt like it was made next door to the factory that built Stephen King's Christine. The Chomper felt like it was set in Grant's Oxrun Station. The Wager, Bruce Smiley's Ultimate Death Machine, and Bedside Manner had that great Twilight Zone feel to them. But the one that made me look uneasily over my shoulder was Gearhart's Wife. That one was full of creepiness and atmosphere that Rufty ladled on with a very large spoon. I kept thinking to myself, what would I do if I were loan officer. This may sound like blasphemy, but I think when he's not trying to paint the pages red, Rufty's best writing comes to the surface. He spends his time crafting atmosphere and the characters have that extra je ne sais quoi that breathes life into them. All in all, Rufty has something for everyone in this collection and I can't say enough about it. Get your butt over to Amazon and click on it immediately.

BONE CHIMES, by Kristopher Rufty is a collection of some of his short stories. This is the limited edition, H/C Thunderstorm Diablo version.

Favorite stories of mine included "The Chomper", "Gearhart's Wife", and "The Night Everything Changed". A great collection overall, with some resonating more strongly than others.

I typically don't like short stories, but I enjoyed this book. For some reason, I find horror shorts are hard to follow, and don't really explain anything. I often have no idea what is happening. However, I really enjoyed reading these stories!!

Collection of Great Horror

Rufty kills it in his first collection of Horror tales. Great twists you don't see coming. The story Wager is one of my favorite shorts now. A most read collection.

This guy sure does like rape. Werewolf rape, home invasion rape and spousal rape.

If you have Kindle Unlimited borrow this one just for The Chomper and Gearhart's Wife. The rest of this collection is best ignored, unless rape is your thing

Historically, I'm not a big fan of short stories but I'm trying to make more of an effort to broaden my horizons at least in the horror genre. For some reason, short horror stories are more palatable to me. Having said that this book was amazing. Kristopher Rufty really nailed it. I don't think there was a bad one in the bunch. There were a few that I liked more than the others:

Love Seat - a love story between a man and his couch.
Something Out There - a werewolf story with an unhappy ending
Gearhart's Wife - dedicated fan meets his hero, and then things slide right off the deep end in a truly unexpected way

If you're a horror fan and you haven't read this book - what are you waiting for? Thank you to the Horror Aficionados group for making this one of their monthly reads with author commentary.

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Bone Chimes was such a weird and unhinged collection of short stories! I enjoyed this more than I was expecting to. A few were genuinely scary, some were kind of comical, and others were just downright creepy. We have death machines, sentient couches, werewolves, men giving off Norman Bates vibes, creepy hillbilly circus clowns. I feel like there's something for everyone to enjoy! But only if you're into extreme horror 😉.

This is definitely worth checking out and gives a good introduction into Kristopher Rufty's work!

Kristopher Rufty has added some disturbing and eerie vibes to my life with this short story collection! The collection is full of small horrors, exposing our psyche's dark and disturbing crevices!!

The Chomper–Homeowner’s association has never been as bloody!

Love Seat – a magical and riveting chair make for one man’s fantasy

Something’s Out There–a chilling camping trip for two turns vicious.

The Wager–lover’s friendly video game turns morbid

Black Garbage Bags–Little Doug will never see his father the same way again

Bruce Smiley’s Ultimate Death Machine–a machine where you can get revenge on your enemies

Bedside Manner–a wife is held hostage in her home by a maniac only to be saved by her “hero” husband. Or was he?

Gearhart’s Wife–An infamous horror director with a fetish for his movie props

The Night Everything Changed – creepy carnival workers called Haunchies who want to set up camp in the fields of an occupied farm.

Pleasantly surprised with this collection and even more excited that there is an actual Bone Chimes 2!!! Such a great and thrilling collection!

Good read!

It is rare that I read a book that has multiple stories in it and like most of them. I actually liked all of these! Definite recommend!

"That way I can bathe in her death... I want to smear her patronizing essence all over me, absorb the finality in knowing I've beaten her."

Bone Chimes is Rufty's first collection of short stories. From a gated community offering blood to a magical love seat to a camping trip gone wrong to a morbid video game challenge, each story was eerie and disturbing. My expectations were kind of high because with a cover like that, I was expecting them to be a lot more spookier. But overall, this was a fun collection of stories. Some were unique and some I enjoyed more than others.

Out of the 9 stories, my favourites were:

The Chomper
The Wager
Bruce Smiley's Ultimate Death Machine

I'll have to get my hands on Bone Chimes 2 to check it out.

3.5⭐️ rounded up.
