Debra Hart is moving on. Maybe. Hopefully. One day.

As a radio show host, Debra spends her mornings as Miss Lonely Heart on air, empathizing with all the broken hearts in the Denver metro area. She spends her evenings watching old musicals and trying not to think about the guy who broke up with her and subsequently fell in love with one of her best friends. Alone in a new city, Debra questions where she belongs and who she is now.

When she stumbles into the indie music scene, Debra meets singer Ben Price. Rock star appeal, with a day job as a worship pastor, Ben is everything Debra wants to avoid. But he’s determined to be her friend, and it so happens she could really use one. Because try as she might, nothing seems to erase the anger and betrayal she feels.

It’s time for a new dream. But how does she start over when the pieces of her broken past remain lodged in her heart?

No, no, no I was not ready to say goodbye to Debra and Ben or this setting. I’ll start with the setting. I LOVED it! I’m quickly becoming a fan of Denver and the surrounding areas. This is the third book I’ve read in the recent past that has been set in this amazing part of the country. I’ve never been in real life but Im dying to take a trip and maybe just move there. Now for the the plot. LOVED IT! This author knows how to write a swoon worthy romance and a swoon worthy hero. Oh goodness, Ben is super hot. Oh wait, I was on the plot....okay so I have to say that although technically this novel is a stand alone I would not recommend it without reading The Last Summer first. I just feel like I would have had a hard time enjoying After the Rain had I not read The Last Summer first. I enjoyed the dating, friendships and following the characters careers. To me, Debra was not very likable in the first book and I continued that same feeling for her through this book as well. She just struggled with life so much and even though I didn’t particular like her or relate to her she was a “real” person. And now, Ben. Ben Price is one dreamy hero! He is kind and handsome. He knows what he wants and pursues it. He was so patient with Deb and I loved that about him. He falls hard and fast for Deb. and he never wavered with those feelings. You have got to love that in a man! I really, really hope there is another book in the works because this one ended too soon and I need more!!!

I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to post a review.

After the Rain is an emotional story that will grab your heart, all about GROWING. Much more than a romance, it is especially relevant for all 20-somethings searching for home and friendship. It’s one book I will reread with a happy smile (and I know I’ll see more layers of the characters upon a reread!).

I wasn’t sure I would 100% like Debra because of things that happened in The Last Summer, but wow how people (or characters) can be surprising! Seeing her life through her perspective not only made me think differently about events that happened in the previous book, but made me have more empathy and understanding of her behavior. This story, for her, meant change and pain and things that weren’t comfortable or what she expected, but by the story’s end, her identity is stronger and her life is a different kind of happy.

I especially enjoyed all the music aspects of this story, from a rockstar hero (who is the. kindest. ever.) to the music/theatreish quotes at the beginning of each chapter.

Let’s talk about the ROMANCE! It’s wonderful. Ben, the hero, is dimensional and complex, even though we never read things from his POV. (A feat worth noting because I think it requires major writing skills to write a main character this way!) The way Ben loves Debra just as she is mirrors God’s love for us, something not shied away from in the story. And Debra sure doesn’t make it easy for him. 😉 Faith and all its challenges, struggles, and even doubts are candidly expressed and remain an important part in Ben and Debra’s lives.

Amidst all the emotional complexity and slow growth of Debra’s relationships with her newfound friends, the adventurous side of Colorado living is included (rafting, hiking, zip lining, ohmy!)! I enjoyed this aspect, especially, because my family vacationed in CO many times when I was growing up.

I also really loved the friendships and “normal” things of the story, like falling asleep in the car on a long drive, toddler shenanigans, neighbors. Community. How change sometimes means discomfort and a new kind of normal. And how, through all of this, God remains constant, even when it’s hard to hear Him.

Thank you to SLB Tours for the review copy. This is my honest review.

I just closed After The Rain and feel like I just left a really great therapy session.
After reading The Last Summer, I did not like Debra, nor did I really feel bad for her. Now? I feel like I connect and relate to her on a deep level. This goes to show you that you never know a person’s story until you know their thoughts & feelings and also, that Brandy Bruce is incredible at introducing you to the soul of her characters.
This is a deep and honest and raw story of rediscovering who you are when you can’t go back to the person you once were.

Wow

I love this story. It’s one of love and everything that goes with. I love watching Deb grow as a person....she was able to find out who she really was through heartbreak. I also love the God connection in this one. This story made me happy but left me wanting more of Deb and Ben. Speaking of Ben....y’all know he was added to my mile long list of book boyfriends....happy Reading!!!!

"I decided then....my dance with God might look different now, but I was still willing to dance. In fact, this dance seemed more real to me."

So if you haven't read The Last Summer prior to reading this book, you will likely sympathize with Debra from page one of the book, maybe even empathize with her. After all, Debra was the one who was spurned and then one of her best friends and her ex got together pretty quickly after she exited their life in Texas. I read the first book and was absolutely Team Luke (her ex) and Sara (one of Debra's best friends)....and didn't care too much for Debra then and felt my irritation rise in this book at first as Debra wallows in her self-pity, anger, disillusionment, and doubt. And yet, I felt drawn to Debra's honesty, tangled-up mess of emotions, and palpable heartbreak after losing a part of herself from the break up and not knowing who she is anymore. She is confused, alone, lonely, and running away from God, friends, and family when she meets Ben in Denver. And Ben is the epitome of God's love and grace, one who never lets go and pursues with patience and unconditional love even when Debra runs away. This is a story of God's grace reaching down, even to those of us who feel abandoned or don't feel worthy. This is a story of growing up, maturing in life and love and faith and friendship, and looking at the painful past through those matured eyes to offer forgiveness and learn from the pain. If you’ve ever had your heart broken or felt lost and wondered who you are and where you are going, you will see Debra. And yet the best part of her story is what she does to come out of the ordeal as someone more mature, yet still true to herself. I am glad that I traveled this road with Debra and saw her at a place of contentment at the end of the road.

There's a quote on the cover of this book that says about how Debra's story will remain with you long after you've finished reading. It's so true. But I find that happens to me after every Brandy Bruce novel I've read. How the characters linger in your mind. How real they felt to me even though I know it was fiction. They call you back to reread their story and learn new truths. This book is a must read for that reason alone.

Engaging, relatable, and honest. After the Rain was a compelling read about change, healing and letting go of hurts and disappointments. With authentic characters, heartfelt emotion, a lively indie music scene and a vivid Colorado backdrop, this book was a great story to sink into and experience. I really enjoyed it!

This was a wonderful story of what it's like to pick up the pieces after your life is shattered. I'm so glad that the author told us Deb's story.

I didn't connect with this book as much as the last one. Mostly because I was bothered that no one seemed to be concerned about Deb's spiritual health. She is hurt and mad at God and not sure if she believes. I totally understand how, going through what she did, she would feel that way. Everyone around her was basically like "Yeah, your relationship with God might look different". On the surface, this is so true and I wanted to cheer them on. However, as the story progressed, it bothered me because no one seemed to be concerned (including the Christian guy she is dating) weather or not her faith has any impact on her life again.

I still liked the book and I plan to read more by this author

AFTER THE RAIN was a beautiful, bittersweet, emotional roller-coaster romance. Inspirational romance readers will fall in love with these characters and connect with the heroine's journey to find herself. Highly recommended.

Goodness. This story. I loved these characters! Loved them! Except when I wanted to shake and yell at Debra. She was so scared and stuck sometimes that she kept sabotaging herself. Drove me crazy! Ben was a saint. He put up with it all and hung on when there were so many times he could have quit. I loved some of his lines the best, like "If you love me and I love you—please stop breaking up with me." That one totally cracked me up. It was so Ben and so what Debra needed to hear. I did get frustrated with Debra being so devastated after her breakup. I get it to a sense, but I feel like too many girls put their happiness in someone else's hands. Maybe that was part of the point. I was happy that Debra worked through things and figured it out—or at least enough with Ben's honesty and willingness to push when he needed to so that they could have their happily-ever-after. Or whatever version was best for them. Sometimes we have these dreams and we forget that dreams can change or can be the same, but look different than we'd planned and that doesn't make them any less. I appreciated that this story wasn't just about the romance, but about Debra figuring out who she was, what role God would take in her life, and what she wanted. Those are all things all of us struggle with at one point or another, if not on an ongoing basis.

One of my favorite quotes:
"The difficulty with happiness being tied up in another person is that we have no control over that person. So they have the power to destroy our happiness."

In the end, was it what I wished for? This story was full of so much heart. Great characters, genuine faith-filled moments, swoon-worthy romance, and all the feels. I loved it!

I do not care for romance novels. I find the characters are heavily clichéd, the relationships unrealistic, and the plots overly dramatic. That being said, I recognize that my love of science fiction and fantasy is the same coin in a different currency.

I do, however, love good writing. And Brandy's writing is why I finish her books. Her writing uses fantastic imagery and conveys a sense of grounded realism, her characters and their interactions could be real people I know. Brandy writes about real life situations and then weaves romance into it with gentle subtlety. She leaves room for dreams and magic, yes, but is not afraid to show how messy life can be.

But this is a review of After the Rain.

In The Last Summer, I was able to empathize with Debra. She endured a veritable hammer to her life and circle of friends that left her shattered. Finding her again in Colorado, we meet a few new characters and follow on Debra's journey of growth and maturity. At times frustrating and irritating, other times cathartic and content. I did not particularly care for the romantic tension between Debra and Ben, and I found myself hoping they would develop a strong friendship over passionate romance. But I also don't care for bacon, which; I am told, makes my opinions a little less valid. Regardless, After the Rain was an enjoyable read and another welcome addition to my library. I will continue to watch out for more of Brandy's books, as her writing and voice are what have brought me back, and will continue to keep me coming back.

After the Rain perfectly continues Debra Hart’s story from The Last Summer, allowing readers to see her in a different light. Hers is an emotional story, for sure—and one I’m ecstatic that Brandy Bruce decided to share because I loved it.

Debra is trying to move on from the hurt and heartbreak of losing not only love, but friendships, too, yet starting over is no easy task. Understandably, her faith is a little shaky, and she has feelings aplenty of anger, bitterness, doubt, loneliness, and uncertainty of who she is, where she belongs, and what she should dare to dream next. Then, she meets Ben Price—and though Debra’s wary, his determination helps to push her along the path toward the healing and growth (and romance!) she needs.

I’m so glad that there’s more to Debra’s story. Though I absolutely loved The Last Summer, I still hoped for a better outcome for her. Luckily, Bruce writes it well, not disappointing in the least, and delivers a story easy to recommend. Definitely read this book (and The Last Summer, too, of course).

If you read Brandy Bruce’s The Last Summer, you know there was one person whose story ended with pain and heartbreak. I am so glad we get to read Debra’s continuing story. And Bruce once again pulls out all of Deb’s emotional upheaval.

In After the Rain, Deb is struggling to let go of the anger and hurt from not only losing the man she fell in love with but also her closest friends—her family in a sense. She sees herself as a shadow of the woman she was before.

In spite of some bitterness toward the two people who shattered her dreams and drove her away from Texas and everything she once knew, Debra is brave and courageous. While she doesn’t see it, God has something beautiful on the other side of her pain.

For everyone who has nursed a broken heart, had their entire world pulled out from under them, wondered if God cares, or felt alone, Debra’s story is one you must read. Going through the fire is painful, you will get burned, but the beauty that comes after the refining? That’s a symphony of life not to be missed.

This one touched my heart. Disappointment and heartbreak are hard to reconcile. It’s even harder to figure out who you are after your whole identity is part of someone else. Deb and Ben struggled but held faith.

Brandy Bruce's After the Rain is the follow up to her novel, The Last Summer. I read The Last Summer on a whim and was surprised by how much I loved it. Brandy was a new-to-me author at the time and I had no idea what to expect. If like me, after reading The Last Summer you may have found yourself frustrated with the character Debra. Well, let me be honest here - to say I was frustrated with Debra was a gross understatement. Alright, the girl just flat out got under my nerves. I didn't want her around. Her choices frustrated me, her personality bugged and I just wanted her to get out of the way of Luke and Sara's happiness, hehe. I was hesitant to pick up After the Rain after learning Debra would be the main character, but admittedly curious what kind of journey the author would take Debra on.

Overall I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed getting to know Debra on a deeper plane. I wouldn't say that I loved her as a character or that we would be close friends in real life, but I appreciate where she was coming from now. Her character growth was satisfying to see and her struggles relatable considering all she'd been through.

The hero, Ben Price is a good guy. His patience with Debra was endearing. His love of music and serving as a worship pastor at his church was great to see. It was his love throughout the book of his position as a worship pastor that made his choices toward the end of the book puzzling and honestly disappointing. I don't want to spoil anything for future readers, so I won't elaborate, but his choices came across as regression in his walk with Christ. I expected a man in a leadership position to be a bit further down the road in terms of his desires, goals, dreams and pursuits. His choices would have made more sense and I could have understood, even rallied behind in a way, if his faith was new. He was presented as a pastor in his church and his priorities didn't reflect that, which was disappointing to me as a reader.

Again, overall this book was enjoyable. I loved Debra and Ben's interactions, getting to know Jason a bit more. I am looking forward to book three, as I would love to learn more about Jason. He was such an endearing character in book one and even more so here, in book two.

Okay, I know it’s only February, but After the Rain, by Brandy Bruce, a new-to-me-author, is most certainly going on my Five Favorite Books of 2019 list! I ADORE the characters, was pulled into the emotion of the story very quickly, believed the plot, and sighed upon reading Every. Single. Chapter.

Sigh… Sigh… Sigh…

This story will stay with me for quite some time. Upon learning that After the Rain is the second book in a series, I’m dying to go back to read book one, The Last Summer (Sarah’s story.)

I connected to Debra almost immediately—not because we have many similarities, but because I became part of her. I felt her heartbreak, fear, uncertainties, and burn of betrayal. And at the same time I yearned to push her out of her protective cocoon, to take a chance on becoming a lively butterfly.

Debra is one of the most realistic main characters I’ve come across in sometime. She feels like a friend and confidant, one I don’t want to go away for any length of time. I want her story to continue and to be able to follow along beside her.

And Ben (sigh…) Adorable, kindhearted, and (perhaps most importantly) patient, Ben. He is the ultimate male. He isn’t a superhero donning a red cape. He isn’t a knight in shining armor. He’s a spiritual man, wearing an understanding heart and genuine smile. And if that isn’t enough, he sings like a songbird. Wowza. Be still my heart.

The secondary characters (even the ones that are only mentioned via dialogue) add so much to this story. The backdrop of Denver, with its beautiful scenery and unique perks, is a character of its own.

With themes of faith, freedom, friendship, and following your true path, this story wins on every point. Read this book! I am certain you will love it.

On a five-star rating system, this book is a solid ten.

What happens when you've lost the love of your life? You start over, right? Well, that's what Deb does in Brandy Bruce's sweet novel, After the Rain.

I have yet to read the previous book, The Last Summer, but I believe it is a bit of a "prequel" or so to this book. That being said, I didn't feel like I missed anything by not having read it yet. (Believe me, it's on my list to read soon!).

Anyway, I hoped into this story without much of a background or understanding (how I prefer to start books) and was captivated, and a little saddened, by Deb. She is real, honest, and raw, and I LOVE that about her. This truly is a story that shows her character growth and I really enjoyed that.

Then enter BEN. *Sigh* Hello Colorado man with long hair and musical skills. He's your average rock star without the 'start' attitude and I really liked that about him. I also LOVED that he had a past. That may sound weird, but I'm a lot a little over characters in Christian books being so sparkling clean that you can't identify with them.

As for the story itself, it pulled me in in the way that Brandy has with her writing. I saw it first in Looks Like Love and am really growing to love how conversational of a style it is. It makes you feel like you and her main character are best friends and you're walking her story with her.

Without any spoilers, I'll say that this was a super sweet but emotionally involved read. Things don't just instantly get better (like real life) and there is a believable tug of war going on between who Deb was, who she is, and who she's becoming. It's a beautiful, slightly complex, but ultimately fulfilling journey!

I recommend it to those who like sweet romance, Christian fiction, and stories that have emotional tension.

Liked the main characters of Deb and Ben very much . A refreshing story of a jilted woman whose boyfriend wanted one of her best friends instead! The story unfolds as Debra moves to another state with a new job at a Radio station...no family or friends nearby.... With a multitude of emotions, counselling, hard work, she is introduced to worship minister and potential rock star Ben. A kind hearted, loyal thoughtful guy.....the relationship develops, and Deb promotes the group who get snapped up as a supporting band for a famous rock band....photos of Ben and other woman, jealousy, and time apart make them realise what they really want.....each other 😀.
Lovely read 😃

Topping my list of most-anticipated books of 2019, After the Rain proved to be a bit of a different story than I expected and so much more at the same time. I'm an avid lover of Bruce's debut with Bling! Romance, The Last Summer, and fell head-over-heels for that hero and heroine while finding Debra my least favorite of the group for no reason other than simply being different from her. Knowing how much I loved The Last Summer and how badly I wanted a positive outcome for Debra, I eagerly jumped into After the Rain.

Bruce's sophomore contemporary romance proves just how talented a writer she is. She took a vivacious, bubbly emotional character from The Last Summer and turned her into a mature, cautious, thoughtful heroine in After the Rain. Debra's emotions are so beautifully portrayed in this book that I actually myself felt her heartbreak, questions, doubts, and uncertainties. By the middle of the book, when Debra's outlook begins to shift ever so slightly back to her The Last Summer-self, I found myself thinking "atta girl." Bruce's use of themes and symbolism are superb in, lending depth to this already-strong story. Add one God-fearing, kind hero and a cast of characters I sincerely hope return for their own stories, and After the Rain is one book I will be recommending on many lists in 2019.

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book since I wasn’t a fan of Debra in The Last Summer. Well, I need not have worried. Bruce took a broken character and gave her new life and placed her right in my heart. And Ben…. SWOON. Both characters have flaws but that just makes them easy to relate to, though I must confess to wanting to shake both of them a couple of times lol.

Ben falls hard and fast for Debra, he’s a worship pastor, and he leads a rock band. Um…. hello. Pretty much the definition of swoonilicious. There’s a lot more to him than that, though. His compassionate and giving heart, his patient and steady pursuit of Debra, and his determination to redeem his backstory – all of these contribute to his swoon factor as well.

After the Rain can be read as a standalone but it’s really best understood when read in light of the events in The Last Summer. Without it, readers may not realize the depth of Debra’s heartbreak – or how completely it has affected her since. I loved that the author has Debra in counseling; we need more Christian fiction with believers in counseling. It’s healthy and wise and sometimes necessary to move forward in life. It doesn’t mean you don’t trust Jesus enough; it means you’ve fallen in a pit of some sort and need someone to give you a hand up.

Bottom Line: Denver and its music scene comes alive under Brandy Bruce’s pen. Faith is a key element to the story but it’s not overpowering or preachy. It does, however, paint a beautiful picture of how Jesus meets us where we are, no matter how far we’ve fallen or how unsure we are about Him. Debra and Ben have great romantic tension, and their love story – while not without its pitfalls and obstacles – is sweet and heartwarming. A must-read for anyone who has ever longed to belong.

It’s been 8 months since Debra’s heart got broken by Luke - the man she hoped to spend the rest of her life with, but he chose her friend Sara over her. Since then Debra has moved out of Texas, found a job as a co-host of a morning radio show, made a friend, but she’s still just a shadow of the lively girl she used to be, singing in church every Sunday, hanging out with her pack of friends. She lost her previous life, her faith, her voice. Her heart is filled with anger and bitterness, and definitely isn’t ready to love again. When she meets Ben Price - the lead singer of an indie band slash worship pastor of a local church, Debra tries to keep her distance, but Ben is so persistent in trying to befriend her, she has to give up eventually. Is feeling alive again worth the risk of getting hurt, though? Ahead of Debra lies the rocky road of rediscovery of who she is and where she belongs - what’s waiting for her at the end of it?

“After the Rain” is the sequel to “The Last Summer”, which is the story of Sara - one of Debra’s closest friends, who turns out to be the love of Luke’s life, though she never meant to break her friend’s heart. When Sara was the protagonist I didn’t like Debra very much, I must admit. I felt sorry for her, of course, but I considered her an obstacle on Luke and Sara’s road to happiness. I’m glad Brandy Bruce decided to give Debra her own story, which made me understand her better and changed my attitude towards her.

Writing this review, I want to say a bit about three aspects of the book. First of all: Debra’s character development. At the beginning, even though it’s been months since the break-up, she’s still deeply hurt and can’t help feeling bitter and betrayed - it shows especially when she’s giving relationship advice as Miss Lonely Heart on the radio. When Debra begins therapy and meets Ben she starts to open up for new people, new experiences, and finds her passion for music again, but it’s a slow and painful process, she doesn’t just forget about everything she’s went through. I think the author did a great job showing it’s not entirely true that time heals all wounds, but healing a broken heart requires also a lot of strength, acceptance and a willpower to let go. And even though some events change us forever, it’s okay to be different, as long as we can find happiness again.

The second thing is music, which plays a significant role in this novel. I love books in which the main character sings or plays some instrument, so ‘After the Rain’ was perfect for my taste. While it takes time for Debra to enjoy performing again, there’s also Ben who sings, plays guitar and uses his gifts for God’s glory - what’s not to love? He’s also handsome, sweet, incredibly caring, and ready to fight for love - sounds like an extinct species, I know, but I believe men like that still exist in this world. Back to music, the characters use it to express their emotions and feelings, escape from reality, praise God, and for Debra finding her voice is also a sign of healing. But the author shows the other side too, a danger of diving too deep into showbusiness without a strong foundation.

Speaking of foundation, the last but not least of those 3 main aspects of this story is faith. When her hopes and dreams got shattered, Debra feels like God abandoned her, she’s not interested in atttending any church, and singing in worship band again is out of the question. But Ben shows her that every person’s path looks different, and his own patience for Debra reflects God’s patience and love for His people. I love how Debra’s story conveys the beautiful truth, that even when we’re walking away from God, He never abandons us - His help might look different than what we’re hoping for, but He’s always there and His arms are wide open. There was only one thing I didn’t like regarding the issue of faith in this book: one of the characters makes a choice I personally don’t think a godly man should make, choosing something else over serving God.

‘After the Rain’ is a beautiful story about healing, learning to let go of the past and letting oneself love and be happy again. Brandy Bruce made me laugh and cry again, and I hope to have the privilege of reading more of her books in the future.

I wanted this book to go on forever and ever, I had to start pacing myself or else I’d finish it in a day! I was hooked from the start as the plot contains some of my absolute favorite things.

I’m obsessed with music [thought I can’t sing to save my life, I live and breathe music!!] so Ben being in a band was an automatic draw. I also have an embarrassing secret dream job of being an alternative radio host and Debra just happens to live that dream life. To top that all off...the book takes place in Colorado, a place that I have been dying to explore for most of my life.

So naturally, those three elements may have made me a little more biased considering it felt like the author was catering toward my every need in a beautiful love story. However, this book is so much more!!!

Let’s start with the character development. I adore broken-hearted Deb and I felt for broken-hearted Deb. She came out of a horrible situation and became a much better person. Instead of falling for a new guy straight off the bat, she took time to heal her heart before giving it away again.

The relationship advice given by Miss Lonely Hart was cathartic and much needed. I’m in a world of Milos so it was nice to be reminded not to settle for anything less than my very own Ben Price.

The religious undertones are nowhere near subtle but Debra is such an asset to this theme by constantly questioning it and thinking for herself. Church life is such a beautiful component and is executed quite well to the point where it became essential for Debra’s character growth. No matter where your faith lies, you’ll find merit in this story.

This is the PERFECT romance novel and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I used my kindle highlight feature to save some important notes because this may or not be my new dating handbook. Well done Brandy Bruce, I love your mind and the story it created! Shelving this one with my favorite book boyfriends and this will definitely become a serial re-read.

My only note is that I loved Paige and I felt let down with the lack of closure. Debra really opened up to her and grew close, where does their friendship go from here??

I also had no idea The Last Summer was related to this one ( I thought they were stand alones). You definitely do not need to have read the previous book to get into this book but I wish I knew beforehand. I love the fact that Brandy Bruce decided to write Debra a happy ending! I’m tempted to pick up The Last Summer so I can read about Luke and Sara in a different perspective, such an interesting tactic on the author’s part!

No more Miss Lonely Heart!

My rating is 4.5 stars

From the first page, my heart cried out and I was invested in this story! Not because I had read and loved the first book – this one is a treasure on its own.

It isn’t often I think about the girl who is dumped so the heroine can get her guy when I read books like The Last Summer. Most of the time, the author is having you feel for the heroine and details all the reasons the other girl is wrong for “him”. Well, After the Rain is about the other girl. The one who was left behind. Rejected. Not good enough.

At least that is what Debra feels. Her devastation over losing Luke (on Christmas Eve!) led her to move away from Texas to Colorado so she can start over. And her grief has her family concerned enough she finally ends up going to a counselor.

In Debra’s poignantstory, she has to learn to live again. To hope again. To trust again. To love again. Prepare for a heart-wrenching journey as she struggles to get her life together and see that life can look different and that not everyone’s faith looks the same.

Ben was great! His deep love for the Lord, his heart for worship. Wow! I loved the way he was able to see into Debra’s heart and wasn’t afraid of her rejection. He seemed to know intuitively how to work his way past her defenses to provide what she really needed. It was amazing how he didn’t give up on her after the many ways she continued to reject him.

Don’t think this book was all heartache and tears, though! It was full of hope and had many touching moments as Debra’s heart began to open up. The fun non-dates that Ben took her on were great.

After the Rain results from the events in The Last Summer. Both are such compelling stories, though this stands alone, be prepared to want to re-read the other once you’ve finished this one.

I would not recommend it for a younger audience.

After the Rain is a sequel to The Last Summer, but reading the first book is not a requirement for reading the second. Brandy Bruce tells the story of Debra. She is coming off a bad break-up (from The Last Summer) and has re-designed herself and moved to Denver. Debra, a radio announcer, almost accidentally finds herself in the role of Miss Lonely Hearts, which is not necessarily a good role for her considering her recent horrible break-up. At times her bitterness comes out and gets her into trouble with her boss on one occasion. In Texas, Debra was active in church and tight with a group of friends. In Denver, she is avoiding church and has made just one friend. Almost blaming God for the breakup. She spends time with a counselor as well as time alone contemplating her life and what she wants to change. The counselor doesn’t necessarily give Christian advice. “I think you’re very spiritual, Debra. I just think it looks different for you than it used to, and that’s absolutely okay. Your journey is your own.” Paige introduces her to lead singer of a local secular band, who also happens to be a worship pastor. Debra’s journey from “rejected” girl friend to engaged is a rough one. She encourages her worship pastor/band leader boyfriend to try the tour circuit which means he leaves his role at the church and travels for four months. The story is well-written with likable well-developed characters, but worldly pursuits take precedence over Biblical ones.

Potential problem areas – I usually donate my review copies to the Christian school library where I work – I don’t have much that appeals to my teens. Unfortunately, I will not be able to donate this one as there are many bar scenes and drinking of alcohol which is not appropriate for my audience. I’m not even sure this book would find a place in a church library. I realize that many Christians visit bars and drink alcohol but having spent many years on and off a Native American reservation and in school situations, I have seen first-hand what alcohol can do to people and their families. I hesitate to highly recommend any book which promotes this type of behavior. (Matthew 18:6, Romans 14:21)

I have been looking forward to this book since I found out there would be a sequel to The Last Summer. I will admit that Debra was not a favorite character of mine from the last book. She was too bubbly and happy and more importantly she was standing in the way of Luke and Sara’s happiness. So needless to say, she was not a character I had grown close too. However at the end of the last book and the meltdown she had, I began to feel for her.

After the Rain is Debra’s story, and wow! What a story it was. I think I like it even better than the The Last Summer. Eight or so months later Debra has moved on literally, from Texas to Colorado and has found a new job as a radio talk show host. But she is very unhappy, still angry, hurt, bitter and lonely. Getting inside of Debra’s head made me really feel for her, even though I felt she held on to the hurt for too long, I understood. She was deeply wounded, her dreams were crushed. She was heartbroken and the hurt went deep enough to shake her faith.

Enter Ben, worship leader and rock band member, who sees Debra as someone he would like to get to know better. He was so patient and loving to her it made me want to cry. These two certainly had some ups and downs in their relationship and Ben has a rough back story as well. I was so glad that Ben did not give up on Debra and continued to pursue her even when his own heart was breaking.

This was an emotional, uplifting, romantic read and I am so glad that I have had a chance to read author Bruce’s work. I cannot wait for more from her pen, maybe even more about these friends.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

I loved this book! Brandy Bruce is one of my favorite authors and “After the Rain” is one of her best books yet! Honest. Romantic. Real and not afraid to address serious issues like abortion and depression.

I loved how music and a radio show played a key role throughout this story. The therapy sessions were pivotal for Debra (the heroine) and Ben (the hero)’s parents were such a lovely couple. I loved the way they treated Debra and connected with her. Themes of family, friendships, forgiveness, hope, heartbreak, the healing power of music and God's saving grace were beautifully woven throughout this story.

Ben and Debra’s relationship was like a rollercoaster and a whirlwind romance combined! The author did a great job developing their time together and was not afraid to test their relationship in so many creative, true to real life ways.

This story was multilayered and so wonderful! The characters were completely engaging and well-developed.

It truly was an enjoyable read!

This story is about learning to breathe again after a crushing blow to the heart, learning to take one step at a time and re-learning how to trust that God's goodness- and His plans- are best. I empathized with Debra's pain, loneliness, and anger as she trudges through her not-asked-for "new" life. And then along came Ben! Ben made this story for me. His easygoing temperament and almost child-like playfulness makes him easy to like right from the start. I appreciated his genuineness and his giving nature with both Christian and non-Christian friends alike. It took some time, but his gentle yet persistent pursuit of Debra opens the door to a whole smattering of blessings and introduces her to a love beyond her wildest dreams. Readers of The Last Summer are sure to join me in cheering for Debra as she finally finds the happily ever after she deserves!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. A review was not required but was voluntary and contains my own thoughts and opinions.

“Knowing who we are takes years. Twists and turns and mistakes and growth.”

After the Rain is the story of a broken, hurting, realistic heroine trying to find her way after the crushing heartache of rejection. As Debra makes a new life for herself in Denver away from her group of friends, she meets other friends, including Ben, a worship leader/band singer, who takes an interest in Debra. The author created some fascinating, endearing, and multi-layered characters that came alive on the page and drew me in from the first. I loved the growth I saw in Debra as she got to know her new friends and began to get over her heartache.

“The difficulty with happiness being tied up in another person is that we have no control over that person. So they have the power to destroy our happiness.”

Brandy Bruce is a talented writer who can bring out all the emotions. Her adept weaving of uplifting messages of healing, forgiveness, of hope brought an additional dimension to this gripping story. I’ll be looking forward to more books from this author in the future. 4 1/2 stars!

To say I loved this book doesn’t begin to cover it. Beautiful story about loss and finding oneself. Loss is so wonderfully described in Debras story of feeling rejected, and of losing a sense of self, of struggling to trust again, of healing, of rediscovering a sense of self, of doubting, of being willing to let God speak to your heart.

There were so many good themes in this book. Through the ups and downs, Debra has to discover her real home. Ben gets a second chance to chase his dreams, but will it cause him to lose at love.

And being a lover of quotes, this book has many, here are just a few of my favorites
What if one devastating moment changes who I was forever? Chpt 1
Beauty starts inside, then comes out and draws people to you. Chpt 4
You’re trying to find yourself- but I already see you. Chpt 13
There is no growth without rain. Embrace it. Be the storm. Chpt 20

Highly recommend this book

Okay, so I'll admit that after reading The Last Summer, which I loved, I was really looking forward to reading this book, but not super excited that it was about my least favorite character of the group.🙈 Well, Brandy Bruce made me love Deb!! I felt her emotion and the stress of all the changes in her life, because I've been there. And by halfway through the book, I was totally rooting for her to once again find love and find her faith again.

Oh, and yep, once again Brandy pulls in all of these side characters to not only add to Debra's story, but have amazing stories of their own. So yes, I will continue to recommend this new author and read whatever she comes up with next!!❤
