Yeah, that about sums me up.
Hi. I’m Cole. Xen. Whatever you want to call me; both are true, and both are lies. My pen names are multitudes, my nicknames legion. Tall, bi/queer, introverted author of a brown-ish persuasion made up of various flavors of Black, Asian, and Native American. I’m cuter than Hello Kitty, more bitter than the blackest coffee, and able to trip over cats in a single half-asleep lurch; I’m what happens when a Broody Antihero and a Manic Pixie Dream Boy fight to the death, and someone builds a person from the scraps left behind. Beardless, I look like the uke in every yaoi manga in existence; bearded or not, I sound like Barry White. About half my time is spent as a corporate writer, and the other half riding a train of WTFery that sometimes results in a finished book. Romance, erotica, sci-fi, horror, paranormal; LGBTQIA and cishet; diverse settings and diverse characters from a diverse author.
Sometimes I shout about things on the internet. Usually intersectional feminism and marginalized voices, and whomever’s punching down in those directions today. Sometimes human sociology, the psychology of sex and gender, and my own gender non-conforming arse (he/him, by the way). Sometimes I get really mad at Stephen Hawking and nerd out all over the place about hairy black holes, and believe it or not, that’s not a terrible pun or even worse innuendo.
That’s it. I’m a huge dork. My humor’s so dry it could empty oceans. I’m a native Southerner from the New Orleans area with zero Southern accent; I’m a mess of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-lingual influences; I have two cats. I wake up at daft hours of the morning to go running. I crochet terrible, lumpy things that never really turn into anything. I’m older than you think I look. I’m much more shy than my fury makes me sound (signifying gods only know what, but probably nothing). Recently I decided, at 36, that I needed to restart my life and move cross-country, so I tossed 75% of my possessions in the trash and randomly trucked it to Seattle. I’m in love with books and music and technology, and they war with each other for dominance and sometimes come together in a beautiful confluence. Most of the physical books I own are strange, obscure, out of print, overseas imports, or any combination of the four. Most of the physical books I used to own were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, and have been replaced with the infinite library on my Nook. My wallet has a dangerous attraction to anything with pages; it flirts and teases and gives its all, until there’s nothing left but emptiness and ruin.
There will always be things you don’t know, and I won’t tell.
But ask me late at night over live music in a seedy bar, and you might just get an honest answer.

The relationship between Mal and Seong-Jae is steadily evolving. It is sweet, fun, erotic and everything in between. The first 25% of the book was so hot. These two know how to set the sheets, table, desks, kitchen counters on fire.

I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Mal and Seong-Jae have me on a chokehold. 🥺
***
“I…I am not sure I mind your pace, I just…” Seong-Jae exhaled. “…I fear I will trip and drag you down with me.”
“Or you’ll trip…and I’ll catch you.” Malcolm nuzzled under his jaw. “Do you trust me to catch you?”
“…yes. Yes, I…I do.”
That, he trusted more than anything.
↠ the first 23% was chefs kiss. i loved how we were able to have a whole scene with Malcolm and Seong-Jae as a couple without being interrupted from a call of a new case. it was cute seeing them have intimate moments, conversations and banters. 🥺 one thing i’m scared of when it comes to their relationship is the secret Seong-Jae has been keeping from Malcolm about Sila. i understand what Seong-Jae is trying to do, especially when it comes to protecting Mal (even though i’m 100% sure Mal will fight for him 😭) but i have a feeling, the longer he keeps it, it will put a strain between them once everything is revealed. aside from that one secret, what i appreciate about their relationship is the way they talk about their feelings. i love how Malcolm is so blunt and honest about how he feels for Seong-Jae. it’s refreshing bc i’ve read lots of books with constant misunderstandings cause the couple won’t say how they truly feel (one misunderstanding is fine bc i love drama and it makes me emotional af but if it’s repetitive throughout the book?? no thanks). 🤷🏼♀️
↠ the case in this episode was heartbreaking. i love little kids (both irl and fiction) so any time they’re in potential danger always leaves me terrified, but what Seong-Jae had to do just to save her, i can imagine it’ll eat at him and i hope he’s gonna be okay. 😭 i also hope we get updates about Melanie and her aunt from time to time, please.
↠ although Sila has never made an actual appearance to Seong-Jae yet, i swear his presence seems to loom over the scenes and i’m nervous once the face-off (whenever that will be) comes into play. 😳
HA, i’m sorry for the long paragraphs when it comes to Mal and Seong-Jae in these reviews, i’m enjoying (most of) the cases, but i’m not gonna lie... the romance/characters are mainly what i look forward to every time i pick up the next book in this series. 😅

"Come on. Let's get through this. You can hide behind me if you need to."
"...if this is you trying to pretend once again that I am not taller than you, it is not working."
"I still have a good fifty pounds in pure muscle mass on you."
"I am aware how heavy you are, Malcolm."

Mal and Seong-Jae know each other for two months. Two. Months. So I guess, it's safe to say that this is pretty insta-everything firing on all cylinders and yet...
We are talking about book #8 in this series here, so with both guys at the very beginning of their relationship (if you can call it that at all), it feels more like the epitome of a slow burn and goddammittohellandback I'm still addicted to each and every cuddly and bantering moment between these two, I share their pain, empathize with their insecurities and feel the urge to worm their very last secret out of them. *side-eyes Seong-Jae*
And that is all I have to say without wanting to sound like a broken record. March can't come soon enough!

4 “You are going to completely fucking ruin me.” Stars!
Thoughts:
Malcolm and Seong-Jae are in their own version of domestic bliss. This bliss while chaos ensues behind them, secrets are still not being fully shared, and they are still figuring out how their relationship works is my dessert of choice. Yes it is dessert because of all the ooey gooey sweetness I got from them in this book! I’m in a fluffy sugar overload with zero complaints.
I would like to put it on record that Malcolm Khalaji is top tier boyfriend material. He listens, he follows boundaries, he reassures, he compliments, he cooks, he is a little possessive (“and you are…” “taken”), he questions, he teases, he pleases, and he is such a simp for Seong-Jae Yoon (which aren’t we all)! What a man.
My little heart goes out to my boy, Seong-Jae, in this book specifically. I have never wanted to hold and cradle a man who would tower over me so badly then at the end of this book.
The case for for Collateral Damage wasn’t long, but it was brutal. Any case involving a child in any way is. The care of how this was handled is remarkable. Cole McCade has handled every case carefully and skillfully each time.
I thought sh*t might hit the fan with our main antagonist, Sila, who has been sneakily hiding in the background of every book, however it did not happen yet. I know it is coming soon though! Can’t wait to see what the next book has in store!
Thank you as always to the lovely, lila for this buddy read! Our invisible Mal&SJ tattoos are not invisible in our hearts because they consume our thoughts in the best way!
P.s. A little tid bit of information I learned which I have to share is that omr is used in this story and I googled it and here are the results: the word omr in the Persian language means life, so when you call someone omr-am, you are calling them your life force. IF THIS DOESN’T MELT YOUR HEART THEN I DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL!
Would I recommend this and to who:

Quotes:
“…I fear I will trip and drag you down with me.” “Or you’ll trip…and I’ll catch you.”
“You are beginning to grow on me.” “Yeah?” “I’ll call that progress. Just last week you hated me.”
“You wreck me, Seong-Jae…and sometimes I can’t keep it inside.”
“Do you still think this is a bad idea?” “Yes … That does not mean I want to stop”
“You bring out so many things in me just by being you. There’s no specific way you have to be with me. You’re already with me. Wherever you are in relation to the other people in your life…with me, you’re right here. And that’s all that matters.”
“We’re all broken. All of us, broken and yet trying to pretend we’re some version of whole we’re supposed to be.”
“You snarl at me to sleep when I’m working myself ragged. You sing me to sleep when I’m restless. You drive when I’m too tired. You bring me food when I’m not well, you listen when everything inside me aches, you tell me it’s all right to feel the way I feel when this job hurts.” He chuckled. “It’s like being hugged by a hedgehog…but it’s still a hug.”
“You know it only turns me on when you get violent.”
“We have hope, Malcolm. And we have each other.”

“You don’t have to change into someone else to fit this mold of boyfriend. I don’t want you to be anyone else. If you want to be with me… just be you.”
Collateral damage (S1E8) deals with a really difficult case of domestic murder and the disapparence of the child of the victim and her husband. I was so scared for the little girl, I skipped the trigger warnings because I wanted so badly for her to be okay!
Also, Malcolm and Seong-Jae are more and more beautiful every chapter! They are spoiling me all my future book couples but I don't care, they are worthy!💞✨
“You know how kintsugi ceramics are made, don’t you?”
“Yes,” Seong-Jae frowned. “Broken dishes are pieced back together using gold or silver to bond the pieces, creating a new type of art.”
“And sometimes, the shattered and the rebuilt pottery is more beautiful than the original.” Malcolm paused for a moment, then continued more quietly, “You are like that. Maybe you’re as broken as the rest of us… but the way you put yourself back together into something new, something better, makes you even more beautiful.”
❀~✿ ❀~✿
“Malcolm,” he whispered, and tangled his fingers into that tumble of ashfall hair, drawing him down to steal his mouth in a kiss. A kiss that felt like something more...because if Seong-Jae was kintsugi, then Malcolm was every shimmering thread of gold stealing into all of his cracked and hollow places, and knitting him into one piece.
Please, he thought, () do not ever let me go.
I do not know how to hold together, without you.

NO BUT BEING BACK WITH THESE TWO LITERALLY FEELS LIKE BREATHING AGAIN AFTER BEING DUTCH OVENED.

Books have just been feeling kinda mid lately. Even the good ones haven’t given me as much joy as they should have.
THIS SERIES AND THIS WRITING MAKES ME HAPPY AND EXCITED TO BE READING AGAIN??????
Literally why did I ever stop reading about these brilliant, fantastic, engaging, smart men who are catastrophically FUCKED for how deep their feelings are starting to grow, and they both know it.

I forget how brilliant their set up is.
How smart they are.
How dedicated to their jobs they are.
How willing they are to talk about how fucked their jobs are and the toll it takes to keep investigating murders every damn day.
The intimacy in Cole’s writing is next level.
And the domesticity in this book in particular........? JINDNBJGKDBDKJEV KIXDJUBLFKASMVEGK NDSK no words to explain. only keyboard smashing.
The boundaries, the permission, maybe one of the my fave BJ scenes ever, the trust, the consent!?!?!

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*A Bit Boring But Still Cute*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
The eight book in the series picks up about two weeks after book seven, it's been nearly two months since Seong-Jae came to Baltimore and he and Mal became partners. Things has changed a lot for them as they are now in an exclusive relationship, being vulnerable with each other and sharing their past. Except, Seong-Jae is hiding something and Mal is too good of a detective not to notice. Overall, I like this one for the relationship part. I do have to be honest and say I did actually skim a bit in this one. It's not bad or anything, it's just that sometimes the writing because... too much? Too boring? Anyway, I still enjoyed it so on to the next one. I really liked Mal showing his possessiveness. I want more of that please.
“It annoys you that I’m gentle with you?”
“Yes.”
“Does it?” Malcolm murmured. “Or is that what you’re really afraid of? That you don’t know how to be gentle with me in return?”
“…it is a possibility…”
“You are. In your own way, you are.” Even with his face hidden against Seong-Jae’s throat, Malcolm’s smile was in the warmth in his voice, the steady grip of his hands against Seong-Jae’s flesh.

The Characters:
The list is a bit long so I've put it in a spoilers tag.
“.....You’re already with me. Wherever you are in relation to the other people in your life…with me, you’re right here. And that’s all that matters.”
“Is it?” Seong-Jae asked, heart in his throat. “Is that really all that matters?”
“It is to me.” Malcolm enveloped him in a tight embrace, holding him as if he was something precious, and buried his face against Seong-Jae’s shoulder. “I’m easy in the end, Seong-Jae. Simple. If I want you, I want the you I came to know long before I realized I had feelings for you. You don’t have to suddenly change into someone else to fit this mold of boyfriend. I don’t want you to be anyone else. If you want to be with me…just be you.”
Fuck. Fuck, Seong-Jae had not meant this conversation to turn this way, to dig so raw and deep at his emotions. Swallowing roughly, he turned his head to rest his cheek to Malcolm’s hair. “Even if who I am is completely broken?”
Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M).
Series: - Series, Book Eight.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Malcolm ‘Mal’ Khalaji.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes, I think so.

Will I read this again in the future? - Unsure..

This was such a gut punch entry into this series. I know McCade commented on how there are a few quicker snappier books leading up to towards the season finale and they really effectively ratchet up the tension.
Seong-Jae, my poor baby, like you needed any more trauma. But also I am wanting to shake you a little bit for sitting on your secrets and not being honest. Seong-Jae has had so many opportunities to come clean and HE JUST ISNT! and I can't help but feel that Malcolm would be within his rights to be upset when it all eventually comes spilling out.
Every Neanderthal moment Malcolm had over Seong-Jae cause of how fucked up he is over him breathed life into me. Their dynamic is so perfect lol.
Considering how little page time Sila has realistically gotten I don't think I've encountered a villain who has made me so nervous in a long time. Every book I pick up in this series I feel anxious it'll finally be the one he makes a move in lol
I am constantly in awe of the emotional intelligence McCade demonstrates with how he writes his characters. In reading through what he has chosen to share of his personal history and experiences you can appreciate where that perspective has come from. These books have regularly been some of the most quietly efficient critiques on toxic masculinity culture that I think I've read.
The fact that McCade can sit there reflect on plot choices and writing decisions and say "Am I showing this to portray the evidence Malcolm and Seong- Jae are dealing with, or am I just showing it to horrify the reader? If the answer is the latter, then I know I need to make a different choice.". Fucking amazing; if only more Hollywood studios had the ability to employ empathy like this we might not need to still need to view movies by way of the Bechdel test in fucking 2025.
The fact that 10 days ago I didn't even know this series existed and now it's an integral part of my DNA is fucking wild to me.
Malcolm Khalaji was very much in love. Not that he would ever admit that. Especially not out loud. And especially not to the prickly, defensive, occasionally homicidal live wire of a man he was in love with. He liked his body parts attached and particularly unmutilated, thank you.
This was such a gut punch entry into this series. I know McCade commented on how there are a few quicker snappier books leading up to towards the season finale and they really effectively ratchet up the tension.

Not me being on eight book and I started this series five days ago. It just shows how addicted I am to this. I never thought I'd love this series so much, but here we are, I will probably finish the first thirteen books in (maybe) a week.
I’m pretty scared and anxious because they are already together and it’s not the end of the season yet. I guess the next books will hurt a little bit, but I hope relationship between Malcolm and Seong-Jae will only get stronger by it. This two don’t have any break, just constant secrets and new cases. I know it’s their job but I pretty much love them and I they deserve a break.
Some of my favorite moments (as always):
Jealous Malcolm is my favorite Malcolm. Okay, maybe not entirely, because I love his sweet moments with Seong-Jae, so maybe it’s my favorite second thing.
Yeah, definitely this type of moments are my favorite.
Can't wait to read the rest of the books.

“That would be a yes.”
“Tch.”
“You know it only turns me on when you get violent.” “I am fairly certain you could be aroused by someone breathing,” Seong-Jae snarled."
“And here I thought you had impeccable gaydar.” He lingered on Seong-Jae with a longer, shrewder look. “And you are…?”
“Taken,” Malcolm growled sharply, brows a thunderhead."

“Malcolm…” Ah, Seong-Jae… Malcolm’s eyes burned, but he never stopped touching Seong-Jae, holding him, rubbing over his back to remind him Malcolm was here, Malcolm had him, Malcolm wouldn’t let him go. “Just hold on to me,” he breathed again. “Just hold on.”
Yeah, definitely this type of moments are my favorite.
Can't wait to read the rest of the books.

This is not the first case in which the characters are manipulated to commit inhuman acts and leave physical and mental injuries to their victims. God, how I hate the puppeteer😤😤. He is everywhere. And he knows which buttons to play to push Yoon down the path that took him so long to recover from.
The end was... painful. Yoon, you deserve to be protected😪.
"But for the moment... he drew back to look down at Seong-Jae, into those haunted, damp-glistening eyes that for once reminded Malcolm just how young Seong-Jae was, that ten-year gulf between them leaving Seong-Jae stripped of some of the armor time had given Malcolm. And yet it only made him want to protect Seong-Jae more; to hold him and shield him when he could not shield himself."

Oh, those two. I'm trying to read it really slowly to enjoy it for as long as possible. Which isn't that difficult. I'm totally exhausted after every book, even though they're so short.
Wanting Malcolm was an entirely new kind of masochism, and Seong-Jae still was not sure how to deal with it. 🖤🖤🖤

Vejamos futuramente.

Damn Sila! You can feel him pulling his strings everywhere and know the web is tightening and the tension of wondering where that is going to happen, when, who will be damaged as bait for the ultimate targets is unbearable.
However, I'm very happy with the togetherness we're getting, to see Seong-Jae and Mal with each other, that's the bright spot in all the dark. I love how easily they are what each other needs, when they need it,without it having to be stated or asked for. *swoony-sigh*
I equally enjoy the investigative side of their partnership, watching them work together to put the facts of the case in line and figure out the bad guy. Now though, their personal relationship is also twined up in that, not as if they can really separate it. I think that will make the working side stronger as well.
A whole month? *whines* As opposed to longer, I guess. *still whines* *sigh*

There’s a warning at the beginning of this book. It made me pause. Mainly because a couple of these books have been gruesome. And well outside my comfort zone. But I decided to continue on. And I’m glad I did. It’s handled well and I was happy.
Just thought I’d put that out there.
After the traditional opening crime scene. We get to spend some quality time with just Malcolm and Seong-Jae. This is wonderful. It also gives both the reader and the characters. Time to breathe. The previous two books have run them ragged. And me along with them. So this was beyond nice.
Bring on the next one...

Poor Seong-Jae, this case will haunt him. Particularly because it's obvious this was exactly what Sila wanted, to crack SJ just a bit more before shattering him completely later. Also, poor Malcolm, I hurt for him because he knows SJ isn't being honest with him, is actively lying to him about something important and it's confusing and hurting him 😔
I don't generally binge series, especially when it's this long, and I'm remembering why. I find it emotionally exhausting and even though I would normally love something to bits, my interest starts waning. And I feel like I'm getting to that point quickly (commitment issues, hello? 🙈). On the other hand, I fucking NEED TO KNOW >_< BUT I'm seriously starting to nitpick because:
- these past two books seem way less edited, there are so many typos and doubled words (normally I wouldn't pay attention to that when I'm immersed in something)
- every time SJ calls Malcolm "old wolf" or "old man" (he's been doing that since the beginning) I'm now like what the fuck do you even mean by old, he's in his early forties, what do you meeean 👀
- and the very last scene here, with Malcolm trying to comfort Seong-Jae with physical touch... I'm probably starting to project and that's not good. It was the first time I felt uncomfortable reading about these two and that's not supposed to happen right :( To me, it read like Seong-Jae didn't want to be touched this way but could not say no to Malcolm, and it made my skin crawl. And I know I probably just read it wrong but that means I'm not in the right headspace to continue right away because I'll totally ruin the experience for myself and I refuse to do that because this series is brilliant and deserves better 😤
Oh, and to add a very unpopular opinion in general 😅 extensive graphic descriptions of a blowjob bore me to tears and you bet I'm skimming hard (a cock is and never will be a particularly interesting body part to me, #sorrynotsorry).
Maybe tomorrow I'll wake up in a completely different mood and will continue immediately...but I think I'll need to give it a break for a few days, even though I'll think about these two beautiful assholes constantly.
Take care y'all ❤️

“Malcolm’s eyes burned, but he never stopped touching Seong-Jae, holding him, rubbing him over his back to remind him Malcolm was here, Malcolm had him, Malcolm wouldn't let him go”
I hate when there are children trapped in the cases. Humans are so unpredictable, yet they have a damn intelligent brain to think before act.
This time, there was a case where the wife was murdered by the husband and he fled with his daughter.
Seong-Jae is still grasp of things related to his past. I don't understand the reason why Seong-Jae hides things from Malcolm. I don't think whether Malcolm knew those secrets he would ever think to let Seong-Jae go. He adores him, looks after him, cares about him. Seong-Jae is so stubborn that he thinks he could protect Malcolm by keeping secrets from him. Oh boy, I wish his brain will be clear after this one.

It’s no secret this has become one my all-time fave series’ and Collateral Damage continues to feed my addiction in all the best possible ways.
So let us do what we do best.
Shorter than it’s predecessors, the story is tight, plays at a quick beat and, although granted not quite as surprising and twisty as those we’ve experienced so far, brings a case that still keeps you on your toes from the very start. And all whilst Seong-Jae and Malcolm’s feelings for one another continue to deepen.
I’m just not in the mood for dead bodies right now when I’m more interested in the very live one in my bed.”
Onto episode 9 and I can’t wait to discover what Cole has planned for us in A Single Bright Candle’s Flame.
...if Seong-Jae was kintsugi, then Malcolm was every shimmering thread of gold stealing into all of his cracked and hollow places, and knitting him into one piece.”

Another wonderful episode from Cole McCade! Malcolm and Seong-Jae are just so adorable together. This book shows them a bit settled into dating, trying to figure out each other's quirks. I just love when Seong-Jae calls Malcolm old wolf! It suits him! And Malcolm referring to Seong-Jae crow of a man in return is awwww! *sigh*
They have this kind of closeness as if they've been together for years. They just get each other both at home and at work. More details are uncovered about their pasts. Malcolm and Seong-Jae are not afraid to be vulnerable in front of each other. It's those comforting moments between them that I loved the most; they were so raw and honest, so heart-felt and tender.
The case this time strikes a cord in Malcolm. Time is of the essence, but with no leads both men feel useless while they play a waiting game with the murderer. Tough choices are made, and they can't turn back the time. But in the end all that matters is that a life is saved even though the illusion of happy childhood is gone for good. It was thrilling, edgy and a little desperate. But Malcolm was there to pick Seong-Jae up. But the best part is what is still lurking in the shadow. Who is behind all this?
It keeps getting better, more exciting, more intimate and very personal. I loved every page of this book! From disgruntled Seong-Jae with his hatred for Swabey's food, Malcolm's fear, Sade's teasing, Anjulie's sorrow to the killer who in the end would not let go! It was awesome!!! I highly recommend it!

That was rough 😣 I wasn't expecting to get so emotional this episode, but well, the author decided to do that.
These two are beautifully soft together when they let their walls down and I fcking adore them. I also quite enjoy Seong-Jae in his full "hedgehog" form. Sila is still a nuisance and I'm dying for Seong-Jae's secrets to finally come to light. That ending was brutal and I'm really anxious about how that's going to affect Seong-Jae and Malcolm 😖

Turns out I forgot to review this. I was likely flying into the next book like a crazed person. Is this the book where Seong-Jae is likened to hugging a hedgehog?? That was probably my highlight. I can’t recall specifics here as the series has all blurred together but I’m sure I loved this instalment.
I am truly impressed by the authors musings at the end of these stories - the way McCade discusses his character development and the choices he makes are beautifully thought out and have such depth to them. Much respect 🙏

I admit I came out of reading this with some conflicted feelings. I felt like we got plenty of Malcom and Seong-Jae together at the same time that I didn't feel like we got enough - but I think that is mainly because Seong-Jae still isn't telling Malcom about Sila so he's holding that huge part back from him, and from what we get in this, those parts in his past that involve his addiction and Sila.
It's obvious that the husband who kills his wife got photos of her - just hanging out - with her boss from Sila, but of course Seong-Jae doesn't tell Malcolm, and Malcolm knows something is up.
I also felt like Seong-Jae was too hard on himself for what goes down at the same time I completely understood.
But none of this is to say it detracted from my enjoyment of the story. I think all this just made the story that more interesting and complex and human, which is what I am absolutely loving about these stories.
I also had a quick reaction of
So I actually loved all these things that were included in this book because it was so real and complex and difficult to read. But I loved how Malcolm was always there for Seong-Jae no matter what, and he was very serious in telling Seong-Jae to lean on him when he needed to.
I also love how McCade has given a - pretty safe to say - very sexual person in Malcom, but when Seong-Jae says "not today" Malcolm just goes "okay" as if it is that simple, and Seong-Jae realizes that it is that simple. I loved that moment, and Seong-Jae realizing that, when in the past his lovers most definitely did not make it that simple.
It's showing that no matter how sexual a person you are, it is never okay to push sex on someone, whether they're not your partner or are your partner - and it isn't the end of the world to not get sex every once a while in a relationship if your partner isn't in the mood for it.
Anyway, that's all to say that I loved this installment. I only gave .5 off because it felt too short and I wanted more, and I got frustrated with Seong-Jae keeping the Sila secret from Malcolm, even though I understand he needs time...I'm still like "you lied to Malcolm's face and then got indignant when he called that out as if you don't know you're lying to his face!" Hmph.
But that's a small thing, and it is early days in their relationship, so I know I need to give it time. Doesn't mean I have to like the lying - or that it makes it okay.
But I'm already bummed I have to wait a month for the next one. I'm loving this series so much! And I definitely want to see Seong-Jae get to a better place after how this one ended.

Moral boundaries blur, lines cross, and even as a secretive puppetmaster watches from the shadows both Malcolm and Seong-Jae must make a choice. ...

Another day, another crime on the streets of Baltimore. Their relationship is building, both in private and professionally ... but there are other factors at large. People from their past ... some we have met, some we have not met.
... happiness can't, and lost happiness can't be somehow magically recovered like the sand once the hourglass has fully tipped over.

One or two aspects are frustrating but I guess that just keeps it more interesting for the next instalment ...

Nothing good ever comes of remembering old things ...

I saw a hundred thousand blackbirds
Just flying thru the sky
And they seemed to form a teardrop
From a black haired angel’s eye
That tear fell all around me
And it washed my sins away
Now everything is cool
Everything’s okay ...
(John Prine)
My reviews can be a bit vague but I won't apologise for that. I would rather them be vague and "spoiler-free". I sort of skim some reviews prior to reading the book and then go back and read them properly... and what some might think is NOT a spoiler might be one for someone else - just saying.
Steller writing again by this author ... I said to myself, I will just read this one and take a little break but, of course, I won't. I will be diving into the next one!

Please, he thought, as he wrapped both arms around Malcolm and drew the old wolf down atop him, bringing their bodies together, locking warmth to warmth, emotion to emotion. Do not ever let me go.
I do not know how to hold together, without you.
Be strong honey. He's here, he always will be. 🌼✨

I don't know how McCade does it - 8 books into the series and every single one a 5 star read. That's some belter writing, that is.

Reread #2
Stay...
.................
Reread #1
"because if Seong-Jae was kintsugi, then Malcolm was every shimmering thread of gold stealing into all of his cracked and hollow places, and knitting him into one piece."
Enough said.
....................................
GAHHHHHHH!
My poor SJ!
This episode was so heatbreaking and sweet.
I loved the fact that SJ was averse to sex here, and I LOVED how Malcolm handled it.
Their discussions and their cuddling was so sweet.
The case was ok. And the little girl is ok. Thank God for small mercies.
Onward to book 9!

« Malcolm started to turn to the Camaro, but then stopped, just lingering on Seong-Jae before half-smiling. “Thank you.”
Seong-Jae cocked his head inquisitively, tangled black hair drifting across his brow. “For what?”
“For still being my partner.” Malcolm’s smile widened. “And sometimes my boss, Detective Lieutenant.”
Seong-Jae snorted, rolling his eyes. “Were you worried our partnership would change?”
“Yeah. A little.” Malcolm shrugged. “But it just feels…”
“Stronger,” Seong-Jae finished without a moment’s hesitation.
“Yeah. Just that. » .
These two...
Detective Yoon:

Detective Khalaji

This was short but perfect like everytime with these boys!
It started where we left them…in Malcom’s house (for a change haha). I love their relationship. Ok they don’t talk about all of Yoon’s past but hey like I said this is a new relationship. One step at time.
I LOVE Malcom:
« Malcolm’s voice hitched, and he nuzzled into Seong-Jae’s throat, his beard rough and scratching against Seong-Jae’s racing pulse. “You know that bowl on the coffee table?”
Seong-Jae blinked. That…was odd… He frowned. “The black one? The kintsugi bowl?”
“Yeah.” Malcolm nuzzled deeper into him, his hands firm on Seong-Jae’s body. “You know how kintsugi ceramics are made, don’t you?”
“Yes…” Seong-Jae frowned as he pictured the bowl—deep with high sides, black lacquer branched with gold veins holding shattered pieces together, creating delicate and erratic natural patterns. “Broken dishes are pieced back together using gold or silver to bond the pieces, creating a new type of art.”
“And sometimes, the shattered and rebuilt pottery is more beautiful than the original.” Malcolm paused for a moment, then continued more quietly, “You’re like that. Maybe you’re as broken as the rest of us…but the way you put yourself back together into something new, something better, makes you even more beautiful. »
WOW. He's incredible and he just doesn't realize how much. This is why I love him so bad. He's natural, so ‘IN’ this relationship. The way he looks at Yoon...Love it.. I don't see him giving up on Yoon after discovering his secrets. And it's only because I have his POV all along. I know how he feels. While Yoon doesn't. Yoon is still testing this relationship. Her limits. This is the first since a long time when he can finally be himself without being judged, mocked or anything else. I can't blame him for wanting to enjoy Malcom as long as it is possible (because trouble are coming 🙈).
Yoon is unique. I love everything about him. From the way he talks (😍) to the way he loves (all his heart). He's really a thing of beauty. He gives as much as he gets. He's totally "in" this relationship too. This is why I can forgive him about his "lies" because he's afraid of losing all of this. Comprehensible.
A really great investigation. A narcissistic jerk who imagines that his wife belongs to him. The end is traumatic.

And thanks to Gabrielle who is the only one in this who cares about Sila 😂. It's like she's gonna find about him before Malcom. It would be epic. I really like her. Slowly she’s becoming one of my favorite characters in this. I’m so curious about her and…😏. You know who I’m talking about if you are reading this series. Hope this will make progress soon 😏.
Can't wait for the next book. Yoon's family: we are coming for you 💃💃
