An award-winning gospel songwriter, Evie Rhodes crafts chilling tales of supernatural suspense. Years ago when Micah Jordan-Wells was born, a rift was created between two worlds. Today, Micah is a detective in New Jersey-a local hero for bringing the merciless killer Silky to justice. But Micah's world is about to be turned inside out by a monster from another dimension, one with whom Micah shares a terrifying link.
Evie Rhodes was born in Newark, New Jersey. She authored the book, “EXPIRED” which was critically acclaimed to be “One of a Kind!” Black Issues Book Review called Rhodes a Master writer, gifted and skillful. Romantic Times Book Reviews said of her work it holds the reader’s attention as if the pages are magnetized. Publisher’s Weekly lauded her for telling it like it is for many teens in (and outside) the hood who struggle to deal with a violent society that all to often embraces money over faith. Evie Rhodes is a Philanthropist at heart, and her many works, be they Novels, Song Lyrics, Short Stories, or Poems as well as her cache of works speak to her love of humanity.
*Spoilers ahead.* This was a very disappointing read. There was no depth to the characters. It was filled with an overabundance of cliches. And, the author tried to cover too many contributing factors in the plot, i.e. mental health issues, spiritual issues, religious issues, etc. without exploring the complexity of either topic adequately. In addition, the plot was disjointed. For example, Micah and Shaughn are identical twins. However, it states later that one of the twins had a different father. Identical twins are the result of a single egg/sperm combination. I won't go into the science. However, it seems that Evie Rhodes didn't bother with the science at all. Yes, she had a religious reason for that particular plot detail. However, it just didn't really do enough to add to the premise.
Another plot point that didn't make sense was that Micah knew who Shaughn was, but there is no mention that Micah had any recognition that they looked alike. Then there was a mention of a porcelain mask that may have caused Shaughn to look like Micah. When witnesses identify Micah, who is a renown homicide detective, as being the perpetrator of several homicides, wouldn't he (or someone else) have immediately thought of Shaughn, who looks just like him, as a possible suspect, or as someone was trying to frame him. What happened to an explanation of the mask she talked about? If the mask was a psychological process that Shaughn used in an attempt to mimic his twin, there wasn't a sufficient account of that process. In addition, the way the author handles mental health issues is atrocious. She demonizes schizophrenia, psychosis, as well as dissociative identity disorder. The therapist immediately blows confidentiality out the window when discussing a previous patient. Then, he jumps to a conclusion that the origins of the issues are spiritual in nature without first exploring other causes. There are more than enough stigmas associated with mental health without books like this adding to it. The premise had potential. However, the author just didn't put enough research into how to handle the many overlapping topics she brought forth in her novel. I knew one chapter into this book that it was a waste of time. However, I was committed to finishing the book because I paid for it. Now, I realize that the time I wasted was much more valuable than the cost of reading this book.
Love this book from beginning to end it had me at the edge of my sit so many times. It was a fight against good and evil in the spirit but here on earth. Micah the main character I truly enjoyed him. I've never knew this author existed until I ran up on her in the bookstore she is amazing love when a author is so detailed in their books make you fell like you are there.
