This review makes me sad. I went in to this Bible study with very high hopes. It is absolutely beautiful. The graphics inside are clean and trendy, and it looks great on a coffee table. But sadly, I didn't get much out of it. There are several reasons that I came to this conclusion. I wanted so badly to love it. So much that I just kept giving it chances. Even after I hadn't gotten much out of it, I kept going back because I was so hopeful. The study is specifically geared to those who haven't read the Bible through, as a study guide and accountability plan. But that wasn't the issue for me--even though I thought the actual plan was poorly thoughout. I mean, one month he has us reading several small books of the Bible, but another month he has us read Psalms AND Proverbs (Psalms alone has 15o chapters). But that wasn't what got me. I kept going. Then as I read through the study, I noticed that some of the books of the Bible that are quite long, in fact only have one or two pages of his commentary/study/questions. What?! How is that a Bible study. The book of Isaiah--chock full of prophecies about Jesus--only has one reflection page? Really? But I kept pressing on. When answering the questions, I felt lost. I mean, really lost. Like I should have had an answer key that was missing. I mean, the Bible was supposed to be the answer key, right? But I read through the verses he said, and still couldn't understand what he was getting at with his questions. Should I? I think the point was for me to just look deeper into the verses than surface level, but I felt like I was always getting the answers to his questions "wrong" or missing something. And the thing is, he never says why he asks the questions. Just poses them. So essentially some of his questions actually made me feel stupid for not getting what he was getting out of the study. But I WAS getting something out of my reading. Just not the answers to his questions. Then there were some questions that were kind of like "duh" questions. So I posed this issue to the others in the Bible study group. And they were all feeling the same way. Like they were answering some of the questions with big ole question marks. I mean, all of us. One of the leaders said we were overthinking it, that there wasn't a right or wrong answer. But my thought is, then what's the point. If I'm answer with a question mark and feeling worse after reading this.... I mean, the Bible can often times be confusing enough until you have study it a lot. Why make a Bible study book that is also confusing....? Anyway, maybe this would be a good book for someone who enjoys abstract questions. Or maybe if you haven't studied the Bible before and just want the plan and accountability. Although, there are a lot of those for free of the YouVersion Bible app.
Or if you want a really pretty, Bible based coffee table book.
I thought this was a study Bible, as in a Bible that included additional translations, notes to enhance understanding, maybe maps and timelines, genological documentation, critical vocabulary with meaning or translated understandings for the purpose of study, along with maybe some of the journaling and questions that the Study Bible actually does have. These books are not the Bible, nor will they truly help you delve into deep study of the Bible. They provide a key verse to sum up each book of the Bible. If you are new to the faith, have never read the Bible, or have questions about what is happening as you read the actual Bible, these books are NOT for you!
I didn’t do this study by reading every book. The study was much too broad for that. I expected a lot more detailed study then it was. I have another Bible study that will be more like I thought this would be. It was ok but I’m not anxious to do the New Testament like I thought I’d be. Just my opinion.
Okay, let’s just start off with the fact that this book is supposed to be designed for people reading through the Bible for the first time, and all the way through (front to back) right? Wrong.
There’s many questions in the very beginning of the book (very beginning of Bible) that were about something from the New Testament.. so I’m sitting there like ?? how am i supposed to answer that if this is my first time reading through the Bible ? like I clearly wouldn’t know how to answer this question. and it left me feeling stupid and confused that I couldn’t answer a simple question like: “How are things different now that we are under the New Covenant?” How is this question relevant in relation to Judges, IF i’m reading the Bible through for the first time?? Why would I want to go forward MANY chapters in the Bible to answer one question that I don’t even fully understand.
Also, if this is truly a Bible study then why would I have to go back through the study to fill in answers for questions I didn’t understand the first time around. I guess I just don’t understand the design of the book. It’s a really aesthetically pleasing book, and it looks super pretty, but i don’t understand it.
Another thing, THERES SO MUCH BLANK SPACE. Zach, I love u man, i really do, but why would u give us so little space to answer the questions and leave so much black space above. the text is small enough, but it seems squished in there and my answer also has to be squished to fit, or I won’t write in all that I want to say because i don’t have the space. I don’t have enough room to write out an interpretation or even my thoughts except for above the question or in the margin. I don’t want to have to do that , and don’t understand why it’s designed that way in the first place.
The point of a study is to better understand the material… this just made it more confusing, and to be honest I’ve cried more than a few times because I was so frustrated and confused with this book. I guess initially I thought it would give me a better grasp of the Bible and what I was reading but it didn’t come across that way to me.
I am really grateful for this Bible Study and I really wish I could honestly give this a higher rating. Both books in this study are really beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. The structure of the Bible Study really challenged me to stick to it week by week and read through the Bible, for the very first time! It’s week by week breakdown allowed me to not feel overwhelmed, and each week was manageable. I felt the author had really great journal questions and commentary helped me connect the scriptures and make them applicable to my life.
The only reason I am giving this Bible Study a lower rating is that these books are FILLED with errors. Misspelling words, accidental repeating paragraphs/questions by mistake, etc. For the study on Philippians, the whole first page was an accidental repeat on the commentary and questions talking about Ephesians. It seems as though they accidentally copy and pasted it to the next weeks study. All of these errors made it sometimes confusing to figure out what the writer was talking about.
All that being said, I really hope the author will be consider re-editing and rereleasing these Bible Studies in the future. Overall, I had a great experience with this study and would recommend it to those who love an aesthetic approach to studying the Bible.
A solid way to journey through the bible cover to cover if new to spending time in the Word. If consistently in Scripture and deeper in your relationship with God, I’d recommend looking at other “bible in a year” options as some of these questions and things in the workbooks seemed a little more surface level for my walk with God. Granted my journey was a little more than 12 months bc #life but still happy I got to experience walking through the bible cover to cover for the first time with Windahl’s encouraging workbooks and the vibrant graphics within:)
Every year, I try to find a companion study to the Bible to help broaden my lens on reading, interpretation, or perspective. Zach did a great job putting together an easy, weekly program to follow along with. The prompting questions definitely shone a light on some things I hadn't thought about before. I would recommend it to those seeking more context on the authors, audiences, and themes of the books. Throughout the year, it kept me focused without feeling too heavy or burdensome.
Excellent book on the Bible. Starts correctly with Genesis. Mentions the 400 years of slavery of Abraham's descendants.
Bible has incredible scientific accuracy like round Earth 🌎 and the hydrologic cycle and jet streams and man from soil and much more. See book by Rat Comfort for more about this!

For new Christian for sure , not enough context for important chapters a 4 chapter book like Ruth has so much context but Isaiah has only 1 page . There is a lot of empty pages filled with graphics which could have been used for more context.

Questions are a bit ambiguous. I have looked at a talking point guide or something to go along to help. There is a fee to join the community. I would not recommend.
I loved this Bible study. It was closer to a guide that kept me on track, but I learned things I never knew before about the history and the cultures of the time that made the Bible make more sense.
It is very broad, which is good for new Christians, and it lacks enormous amounts of detail that could overwhelm people. It focuses on implementing Christianity into your life. The inside of the book is also well designed and beautiful.
That being said, it simply wasn’t what I was looking for. I wanted something detailed that I could really dive into. Not something bad about the book, it just wasn’t what I was looking for.
