Unexpected allies. Unexpected betrayals. Unexpected abilities.

The last thing Jax ever wanted was to be a weapon. Her abilities are unpredictable at best, but there’s no one else with enough power to take on Jastren and his mental manipulations. She doesn’t have to do it alone, though. Not only can she rely on the unwavering support of Lir, Rym, and her human friends, she also ends up with help from a surprising source.

Meanwhile, her twin brother Jace—his body controlled by Jastren, and the shattered pieces of his mind locked inside—has become a monster. The struggle to hold on to what’s left of his humanity has left him weak and more confused than ever before. Every thought, every impulse, and every memory has the potential to destroy him—and everyone else around him.

The futures of both the humans and the E’rikon are on the line, but as ulterior motives and political machinations are revealed, it becomes clear that the betrayals aren’t restricted to only one species. Can Jax and Lir get everyone to work together in time to prevent the two species from destroying each other? Can Jace find some measure of redemption for all he has done? And will Jax be able to harness her powers without losing herself?

*Spoilers for Broken Skies #1 & Fractured Suns #2 (but the 1st paragraph is safe to read)*

Shattered Stars was a brilliant and emotional conclusion to the Broken Skies trilogy! It was action packed, emotionally gutting and I found myself on the edge of my seat desperately needing to know what was going to happen next. I can't recommend this series enough! If you haven't started this trilogy yet, definitely go grab the first book while it's free here. I thought the best way to review the final book was to list some of the reasons why this series became an instant favorite of mine. And they are -

✮ A realistic heroine that continually grows -
A few months ago I had one friend: Jace. Somehow along this strange journey, I’ve picked up a whole group of friends. Some of them have even become like family. A lump forms in my throat. I was so irritated with Jace for suggesting I needed to get out more, that I needed to try more... Who knew it’d be his kidnapping that precipitated my ability to overcome my fears? - Jax

Jax has come such a long way from being the girl who stumbled over her words and and had many panic attacks in Broken Skies. I loved watching her progression throughout this trilogy as she grew into such a strong, confident woman! But the best part was how much faith she found in herself. She put herself in situations to help others, she protected her friends, and the lengths she went to learn her powers was impressive! Jax is definitely one of my favorite heroines!

✮ A swoon worthy book boyfriend -
His eyes sparkle, and everything he’s feeling washes over me. Desire. Lust. Nervousness. But, most of all, the warmth and light of love. He leans down and puts all of those emotions into a kiss.

From the first moment I met Lir, that charming, sarcastic alien quickly won my heart. He pulled me in with his words and actions, and I loved seeing how sweet and thoughtful he could be to Jax. And even though he made mistakes, it made me love him that much more. I was completely infatuated with Lir, can you tell? Plus in each book we got to see certain moments that showed how strong his love was towards Jax. The things he did, ohhhh it was breathtaking.

✮ A power couple -
He lifts my chin with two fingers and smiles softly. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For pulling me out of there. For wanting to protect me”— a kiss to my forehead—“for being you,”— to the tip of my nose—“for being mine.” His lips brush against mine, softly at first, then harder as he pulls me into his lap and I turn around to frame his hips with my legs. - Jax and Lir

Jax and Lir are now a force to be reckoned with. While they each have their own strengths, together they seemed unstoppable. And their faith in one another, along with the sacrifices they made was such a beautiful thing to watch.

✮ So many other characters to love -
I stammer. “You know that. I mean, I couldn’t even link with you out there in the courtyard. How exactly do you expect me to learn to fly this thing when I haven’t even mastered the basics?”
Rym laughs. “The basics? Mind-to-mind communication isn’t exactly basic.”
“Still, you want to risk everyone’s lives by letting me try to lift us up into the air and transport us hundreds of miles?”
“Why not? What better motivator is there than a life-or-death situation?” His expression is perfectly serious for a moment, then a snorting laugh escapes his mouth. - Jax and Rym

Flint, Rym, Jace, Peter, Emily, Stu, Ethan, and so many more became so important to me while I was reading this trilogy. They each stood out, had their own voice and I loved how unique each of their personalities were. I appreciated that each of them played such an important part to this series. And I loved even more how they helped weave the story together. I dare you to try and not get attached to them too!

✮ I was on the edge of my seat -
The color leeches from Daniel’s face, and my smile only grows. He takes a step back, the gun in his hand forgotten. His bravado is gone. Every single drop. And this is going to be so much fun. - Jax

There were so many moments I was beyond nervous for what was going to happen next. It wasn't just because there were so many characters I loved and I was terrified that they would die (oh gosh and some of them do die *sobs*), but it was because there was so much up in the air. There were so many different variables and motives that it was hard to tell at times what would happen next. Which made this series so much fun to devour figuring out all of the clues! But at the same time, there were countless ways for them all to fail. And it definitely seemed like failure would be so much easier than success at times. So this book and series was a huge page turner for me. I couldn't get enough of it.

✮ Additional POVs -
I’m unpredictable. I’m dangerous. I’m absolutely in-fucking-sane. And I’m not going to get better. - Jace

In the first book, it was just Jax's POV. Then in the second, we got to alternate between Jax and Lir. And that made me love Lir even more. But in this final book, we get to be in Jax and Jace's head, Jace is her brother if you need a refresher. And to start off, I wasn't sure how to feel about that. Yes I was gaining more knowledge about what was going on, but her brother's a little crazy ya know. But as the story progressed, I started to realize that the knowledge we were gaining from Jace came at a huge price. You see, I connected with him and his chapters gutted me to the core. He was so broken and the pain and suffering he was going through was more horrific than I ever could have imagined. The farther I got into this book, it felt as though I couldn't escape Jace's chapters without tears in my eyes. His pain was so intense and raw. But it was more than worth it because I never once thought the words Jace and redemption would ever be in the same sentence. But wow, I was proven so wrong. I loved having his POV added to the final book.

The Broken Skies Trilogy was filled with peril, heartbreak, action, lies, betrayal, love and I was definitely glued to the pages. I can only hope that all of my friends pick up this trilogy! It's emotionally breathtaking and a must read!

This story was fast paced and attention grabbing from the first page. This is not some easy plot that you can guess at the 30% point. No, it makes you think and gasp and cry and rage! And if you are a fan of Sci-fi like me you will appreciate not only this story but HOW it was written. It’s almost a throw back to the older authors with their deep world building and danger from multiple directions. Such great story telling.

Jax is one of my favoritist and most memorable characters I’ve had the pleasure of reading about. I could read about her forever. She’s feisty, intelligent, responsible and incredibly vulnerable. She has no qualms about fighting for what she believes in. One of the things I love about her is the fact that half the time she is playing it by ear. She has no idea how to handle everything going on around but she just doesn’t quit! I can relate so hard to that you guys. She is forgiving and isn’t too proud to accept help when she needs it. I mean, yeah she can be a stubborn little shit too but the good outweighs the bad. 🙂

Lir is so understanding, like the perfect counterpart to her wildness and impulsiveness. He grounds her when she needs it and doesn’t try to control her when she gets wild. He just accepts her as she is and loves her. This little alien boy has grown and matured over the course of this series. I think maybe even the most in this book TBH. I really enjoyed this aspect of their relationship. It evolved into something we don’t often see in a Science Fiction/Dystopian.

I’m sad to see this story end, hopefully we can get a novella from her cause I need just a little it more to satisfy my love of this world and all its players.

I received an eARC of this book from the author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.

Shattered Stars
is the epic, heart-wrenching conclusion to Theresa Kay's Broken Skies trilogy. Picking up where Fractured Suns left off, Jax, Lir, and their friends find themselves at the mercy of what is left of the US government. Please note that if you have NOT read Broken Skies or Fractured Suns that there are spoilers to those books in this review. Read at your own risk from this point on. The story picks up at a fast pace right from page one as Jax and Lir flee her old home and doesn’t slow down. I found that I couldn’t read it fast enough. I needed desperately to know what would happen at each turn of the page right to those final words “the end.” Because of the fast pace, I’m not sure how to summarize this book without giving away spoilers! I’ll just say that the final battle among Lir, Jax, and Jastren is here and it is epic!

Jax has to be one of my all-time favorite heroines. Theresa Kay has written her amazingly well. It’s refreshing, really, to see a character who starts so broken in the first book become the heroine in the end. The growth is tremendous, and as the reader, we get to experience it with her. She’s fierce, snarky, loyal to a fault, and out for blood in this book. Yet she’s also confused. Things she believed to be true aren’t and things she believed false are true. Her world has been turned upside down, and despite it all she comes out stronger for it.

And then there is Jace. So the first book is told exclusively in Jax’s perspective, the second is told from Lir and Jax’s perspectives which made me really fall for the alien boy, and now in this final installment we get Jax and Jace’s perspective. At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about getting Jace’s POV. To be honest, I was just as angry at him as Jax was and ready to jump through the pages and murder him slowly. Then his first chapter proceeded and my heart broke, like shattered into a thousand pieces that were then stomped on by an angry herd of elephants. From Jax’s perspective, we know that Jace was her rock, her best friend, the only person she loved and the person who kept her sane all those years without their father. She’s built him into this unstoppable force, really she’s idolized him. Then his first chapter begins and as the reader we realize just how wrong she was to do so. This poor broken boy 😭Jastren has destroyed him. He is barely hanging on by a thread, but he knows he has to find Jax, he has to keep her safe, and he has to kill Jastren. I never thought that I’d say this after reading the heartbreaking ending of Fractured Suns but here goes: there is redemption for Jace after all.

All the characters in this series have become vital parts of Jax’s life and I love how the author implies this, showing how they all work together and how they inherently trust one another. Living during what they feel is the end of times does that to people. While Jax grew throughout the series, the other characters did as well, especially my alien boy. Lir starts the series as a headstrong, prejudice alien who only wants to get home. Then the events of the second book broke him. He is now as broken as Jax was in the beginning and seeing him this way is truly heartbreaking. He’s slightly unstable, yet it’s his love for Jax and hers for him that brings peace for Lir. I loved reading as their relationship grew and it culminates in this final installment.

Overall, I truly loved this trilogy! This final book wraps the series up for Jax and Lir in a beautiful way. The nonstop action, the suspense of not-knowing what’s real and what’s not, and Jace, my beautiful broken boy, and the unstoppable bond between Jax and Lir created an epic, heart-stopping ending to the series. If you are a fan of scifi, alien dystopias, and enjoy a little romance AND haven’t started the series yet, grab a copy of Broken Skies (free on all ebook platforms) and start binging today! If you’re a fan of the series, I promise Shattered Stars doesn’t disappoint!

I adore Ms. Kay's novels and characters for many reasons. She not only convinced me to read Sci-Fi by teaching me to keep an open mind with trying new genres. I have thoroughly enjoy watching as she continues to show growth in both story and character development, which is highly evident in this installment.

Theresa Kay has delivered an emotionally wrenching and satisfying end to her Broken Skies trilogy. This installment continues to be packed with action, determination, heartbreak, and plenty of breathless moments. Despite being a hesitant heroine, Jax has grown into a believable and determined leader. Readers get to learn more about secondary characters, villains, and family.

My only warning/warning is to be aware that you will need tissues, chocolate, and a friend that is reading it at the same time!

MY THOUGHTS
So, I absolutely loved the first two books in the series. I was super excited to read this book but shortly before this book came out, hard times came to my family. At the time, my reading changed. I gravitated toward feel-good books, and this book was put on the back burner. Fast forward two years and I finally read this book.

I did not enjoy this book as much as the previous books but it is not the book's fault. I was at a disadvantage and did not remember everything from books one and two. My reading tastes have also changed. I used to love to read alien books, and while I still find books with aliens interesting, I do not gravitate to them anymore and I do not read as many dystopian books anymore either. Even though my tastes have changed and my memory was not the best, I still liked this book and it read like a solid conclusion to the series. It took me a bit to get into it because of my whole memory thing, but I ended up becoming invested in this book. There is a lot of action in this book and it all felt like a climax. I found the abilities interesting and I felt like I really understood more about Jax's abilities.

This book is also from both Jax's and Jace's POV. The book mainly follows Jax, but there are the occasional chapters from Jace. In this book, Jace is in terrible shape. Controlled by Jastren, losing himself and his sanity. It was terrifying to see his state of mind, but his perspective was clearly different from Jax's. The book does focus a little on family and friendship, especially the fact that Jax feels like she is losing her family, but since so much happens in the story, most of the book focuses on trying to defeat Jastren and getting the two species to work together (which is very difficult). Most plot lines move so quickly that there is no room for a break in between.

Of course, there is romance in this book. I will admit that I kind of sped-read through some romance scenes because they are a bit too lovey-dovey for me. Jax and Lir are now bondmates, which is pretty much the alien equivalent to married. Again, most of the focus was on the plot, not the romance (which I was thankful for), but we do see (or hear?) how they support each other through their telepathic connection. Although, they also have their fair share of trouble.

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I did like this book. Would I have enjoyed it more if I read it earlier? I probably would have, but at that time, I was avoiding dark books (especially ones with death), so I would have had a difficult time reading this book. I am glad that I finally got around to finishing this series and I am glad that I discovered this series in the first place.

This is the third and, I believe, the final book in the Broken Skies series. It's been a long time coming for me, I remember reading the first book way back when it was first released two years ago. And while I am sad to see the series end, I am happy with how things turned out.

Thanks so much to the author for sending me an eARC for an honest review. As always, all opinions are my own.

Before I get too far into this review, please be aware that there will likely be spoilers for books one and two as this is the third book in the series.

Alright, so this book follows Jax and Lir as they continue to forge an alliance with the humans and E'rikon. It's been a while, but I believe that the story picks up soon after book two ends. Jax and Lir are also working towards finding and taking down Jastren, who has Jace held captive. I can't really say too much more without spoiling things, so I will leave it at that.

As in the other books, I loved the characters. Jax is just as kick-butt as she was in the first book and her relationship with Lir is swoon-worthy. I just love the two of them together! Lir is also just as wonderful as usual. I really loved the dynamic of their relationship and the ways it grew in this novel.

Plotwise, things were a little slow to start. I think I was just so used to the first book being so action-packed that I was expecting more from this one initially. But, I did enjoy the more character-based development that happened throughout the book. There were times when not a lot of action was happening, but the characters were hashing out their issues that had been left to fester for so long. A couple of times I had to stop and question what was the end goal for this book because there was more character development than plot development, but once I figured that out, I got more into the novel. There is definitely lots of action later on, but the beginning is more character-driven.

I really liked the alternating POV between Jax and Jace. I've enjoyed Kay's writing style since book one, so I knew that wouldn't be an issue, but I was a little worried about the similarity of the twin's voices. Luckily, they were quite distinct and I had little problem distinguishing between the two. Jace's mind is so broken as a result of his interactions with Jastren and it was fascinating to see the differences between his and his sister's perspective and thought processes.

The only issue that stood out to me was the connection/link communication thing. I'm sure it was explained in an earlier book, but it's been so long that I don't remember. Anyway, they communicated through it by thinking to each other instead of talking because it was quicker and easier. I kinda felt like that doesn't make sense. I guess if the other person is already in your head and understands your thoughts before you can formulate a sentence, then it's quicker, but as a reader of the story, having to read their thoughts, it wasn't quicker. And I understand the necessity in a public setting where you want a conversation to be private, but there were times when they were alone and still thought things to each other. I know it's a nit-picky detail, but it is one that comes up quite a bit throughout the book.

Overall, I think this was a really great alien series and would definitely recommend it!

Thank you to author Theresa Kay for providing me with an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Find this review and more on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Shattered Stars is the absolutely riveting conclusion to Theresa Kay’s Broken Skies series and is a fast paced, deeply engaging tale that brings what has been a thrilling series to a heart pounding ending.

Jax Mitchell has been through so much since her twin brother was kidnapped and Jax set out to rescue him from the group of aliens know as E’rikon that had taken him. Since setting out on her quest, Jax has discovered some startling truths about herself including the abilities that make her the most dangerous weapon there is. She’s also learnt unexpected truths about the E’rikon race as a whole and about the war between humans and Earths alien “invaders”. She’s found new friends and fallen in love, and as Jax and her bondmate Lir attempt to prevent her grandfather from destroying two whole races in his fight for power, Jax and those she loves are in for their most dangerous fight yet. And no everyone will make it out alive…..

As far as sci-fi series go, Broken Skies is one of my absolute favourites. In the tradition of the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout and The 100 by Kass Morgan, Broken Skies is a stellar series that features a personable main character, thrilling romance and a fast paced and highly entertaining storyline. I just adore the series Theresa Kay has developed and have enjoyed every moment of this journey with Jax and Lir whose romance is one I have immensely enjoyed.

Jax has been a fantastic heroine to follow from start to finish, and I’ve loved seeing her grow so much out of the course of the series. She’s come into her own as her relationship and romance with Lir has given her confidence in herself and those around her. I’ve simply adored the romance between Jax and Lir. It has been electrically charged, endearing, swoon worthy and so very beautiful to witness blossom.

Continuing on where the last book left off and following in the footsteps of books one and two, Shattered Stars is a well written and action packed read. I’m really sad to see this series come to an end as I have truly loved it so, but Theresa Kay has concluded it so well. Edge of your seat moments weave with beautiful displays of friendship, family and romance.

Shattered Stars is a really heart-wrenching ending, with Theresa Key not holding anything back. Lives are on the line and there are loses, with Jax unable to prevent some of those she loves becoming casualties of war. A thrilling series from the opening chapter all the way to the final page of book three, Broken Skies ends in spectacular fashion with Shattered Stars and I have no doubt the characters will live on in my hearts always.

I waited years for this book and was so happy to finally have it but at the same time I'm sad I don't want this series to end.
This book was fast paced and action packed, put some tissues next to your book because you will need them. I loved Jax and the way she developed from helpless with panic attacks to a strong young woman. I loved al 3 book covers. I loved the world-building. Fantastic series don't miss out!!

Please write a book about Rym and Kai and Gavin and Trel and a 15 year future book about Ethan and Stella.

I truly enjoyed the whole series, i laughed, cried, got angry etc. The development of the characters was fantastic and super realistic. I’d have given this book 5 stars, except the ending disappoints me. I wish we found out more about the city, about Rym etc. We never found out about his feelings on his fathers death, how Trel was either for that matter. Perhaps finding more answers about exactly what Jastren was planning with the half breeds etc. There was so many other ends i wish were closed. Nonetheless i truly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend!

Trilogy

Shattered stars is a very appropriate title for this book. It’s the end of the trilogy but it was filled with much death and sadness.

I am only giving two stars because while the first two books let us experience what they were feeling and live what they were living, I felt like this book was filled with useless facts about a race that doesn’t exist. I found myself skipping through because certain terms and back stories didn’t really enhance the story at all.

I might have missed some important parts but the story lined just dragged and then plummeted. I would definitely read from this author again, but was not a fan of the third book.

What an incredible conclusion to Jax's journey! Everyone connected to her will face their destinies in this book, so prepare for an emotional finale. If you have a bond with specific characters and their arcs take a downward turn, it will certainly pull on your heartstrings.

I truly appreciate the plot twists in the story, it keeps my mind busy, and I'm pleased that we get to experience not only Jax and Lir's perspectives but also Jace's viewpoint. This adds layers to his intricate character and enhances our understanding of him and his choices so far.

The only reason I'm not giving this a five-star rating is that there are moments when the timing feels off. After all the action, the pace of the next story slows down, allowing events to unfold at a leisurely pace, which doesn’t quite make sense.

That said, I would watch the movie adaptation if it makes it to the screen. It would be incredibly exciting with all the action and the brilliant characters!

Does anyone know if Theresa went ahead with her plan to write another book that includes the other characters? If such a book exists, please let me know!

Too many deaths. I understood Jace’s – he had done so much that he needed to redeem himself and by sacrificing himself he was able to atone for some of it. Then we had Peter which was sad but I accepted the death of another likable character that mattered to Jax but Emily was one death too many, and in my opinion unnecessary. Or if you were always going to kill Emily then Pete’s death was unnecessary, especially as we had already had a major character death in Finn in book 2 as well as Jace in this one. I liked the friendship that grew between Rym & Jax. And I liked both the secondary characters of Rym & Gavin and would be happy to read more about them.

I have no words.....

I truly hope that this trio of books don't end here. It can! But that would be too simple. I can see this more like an introduction to a world of races learning to live together.
I know. It sounds soooo typical. NOT! I really wish I were a guinea pig test subject for a following. Here I am an "80's" teen and would have given my right boob for books like this. But then again, I read Anne McCaffrey a d other but the point is I do not recall books so empowering then as now.
Guess I'm going through another childhood. I hope this was not the end. An excellent read that I loist track off

A brilliant trilogy

This is the last in a great series of sci-fi romances. It has a good balance of action, politics , prejudice, betrayal, ambition, greed and of course love. I recommend this series to any fans of this genre who enjoy a what if aliens lived here scenario without be bogged down by science and politics . And of course romance fans. I look forward to reading more of Kay's work .

A good trilogy

Well this final book is a very emotional ride. There is a happy ending for Jax and Lir however they lose lots of friends and family along the way. The book has a solid storyline and the characters are well written. I love the bond between the two main characters and the fact there is no one trying to become between them. This trilogy was a good find .... Highly recommended...

A ridiculous amount of “good guys” die in this book. It felt like either the author was trying to make the story more dramatic, or just didn’t know how to give every character a satisfying ending so instead she killed them off. For no good reason. 3 deaths within less than half a day. That’s not counting the “bad guys.” Lots of death overall. Happy to finally be done with this series. I put it down so many times because the characters annoyed me, but still wanted to see how it ended.

Great wrap up for a fun trilogy

I enjoyed the end of this trilogy. The pov branched out into multiple perspectives, all story ends tied up nicely (without giving away spoilers here!), and Kay did justice to her characters, both good and bad. (IE she didn't suddenly pull an Allegiant). Great series I'm happy to have bought and read.

I don’t know what happened but this 3rd book just felt like pulling teeth to get through. The long rambling thoughts that were often repeated multiple times and lent nothing to the story. The characters even started to grate on my nerves. I skimmed over a lot just to get through it. I’m really bummed because the series started out so strong.

Great series

This book is the conclusion of the Broken Skies trilogy and is worth readers to take a chance with. So many emotions you face while reading this story I believe it to all come together for a great story. Check it out

This was a great end to a great series, well worth the long wait.
The author mentions at the end she might write a sequel from Rym's perspective and I sooo hope she will. Please, Theresa Kay, please give us more books in the Broken Skies world.

I was so happy that I found not only this author, but this series. It let me float away into the story and it was very difficult to put down. I am about to start another series that she has written. I recommend anyone who likes a great story and being present with the book to read this.

Great trilogy with a satisfying ending

I loved all three of these books, and the last one gave me solid closure. I will miss these characters though! Great balance and dynamics, with a solid scifi that has a fresh twist to it.

Outsanding

I have really enjoyed this series. The storyline and main hero and heroine are outstanding. They are complex and interesting. This is a well written and thought out series. I cannot wait to see where Theresa Kay goes from here.

I really enjoyed the ending to this series. It wrapped everything up well and had some great tension! I had a hard time putting it down, which lead to some really sleepy days!! lol. It was worth it, though. I will be reading more by this author.
