Ben Brooks (born 1992 in Gloucestershire) is the author of the novels: Grow Up, Fences, An Island of Fifty, The Kasahara School of Nihilism, Upward Coast and Sadie, Lolito, Everyone Gets Eaten, and Hurra. Writing for children, he has published the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller Stories For Boys Who Dare to Be Different, Stories For Boys Who Dare to be Different 2, Stories For Kids Who Dare to be Different, The Impossible Boy, and The Greatest Inventor. His first non-fiction book for adults, Things They Don't Want You To Know, was published by Quercus in September 2020.
He contributed the story Kimchi or a Partial List of Misappropriated Hood Ornaments to Frank Ocean's Boys Don't Cry, accompanying the release of 2016 album Blonde.
I have promised to be, above all things, honest in the reviews that I write and so it's for that reason that I must confess that I wanted to dislike this a lot more than I did. These books at the moments for rebel girls and boys who dare to be different conceptually bother me; they speak to ideas of gender in children's literature, for this is what this is, really, and they speak to the state of those ideas being in a somewhat complicated and, perhaps, quite a troubled space. And, because I am somebody rooted in the classics of British children's literature, it seems to all stem from the mid-twentieth century and the notions we have of girls and of boys in the books of that second golden age that still so heavily comes to influence the state of children's literature today.
And yet, and yet -
That strapline bothered me. Boys who changed the world without killing dragons? It's so specific, so madly, utterly, wilfully specific in tone that by perpetuating said tone, that surely it perpetuates a myth of masculinity that the book itself is trying to defy -
And yet, and yet -
That title. Why stories for boys who dare to be different. Different from what? Why is it daring? The transgressive act only becomes transgressive when rendered as such; perhaps this should be a form of normalcy that we should be trying to understand as such. Surely in making something the other, we perpetuate that otherness -
And yet, this isn't a bad book. To be frank, it's actually pretty good.
But I still have questions to resolve, and I will resolve them and I will do so with the full and frank acknowledgement that this is a good, kind and thoughtfully constructed book. It is representative, inclusive and frequently moving, encompassing characters such as Nicholas Winton, Taika Waititi and Lionel Messi. There's elements of it still to challenge, and on fully legitimate circumstances and not 'grumpy scholarly' circumstances. Louis Braille is included and yet there's no acknowledgement of the fact that much of his entry cannot be read by those he sought to help. Similarly, the entry for Junot Diaz suffers from recent events, and I was concerned by some of the looser rhetoric involved in other entries such as "It's time to take their country back". That's a problematic phrase, not in the least for its implicit politicking, and it's a phrase that, really, means very little. And sure, a very young reader might not pick up on that angle, but they'll pick up on the language. The phrasing. And it's that sort of thing in this book that matters and should be fought over, fiercely.
These books are having a moment and I welcome the effort that Brooks has done towards making his contribution a pretty damn good book. I suspect much of its problems come from the hobbles of frame and circumstance, and that I'm maybe demanding a lot of it that perhaps it can't quite achieve in such a context. And yet, I'm unapologetic in doing so because these books - as evidenced by their raw and fierce popularity - are clearly needed. I just ache for them to, somehow, become something more than what they are at present.
(Barack Obama)
Beautifully designed book with great pictures and inspirational stories! I think it’s great value as it has a lot of content that provides good role models for Kids. It’s going to be given as a gift. I’d say it’s ideal for older children aged around 8+ and young teenagers.
I really love Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, so I was really excited about this one... unfortunately, it really isn't up to par. A lot of the stories are great, but I feel that a fair number of them de-emphasized actual achievement and I'm left a bit puzzled as to how to navigate what feels like the over-representation of transgender "success", there's a definite agenda here and while I'm all for transgender rights there's something about this positioning that I find quite inappropriate.
What I find particularly weird, however, is the tagline's "without killing dragons", when the sixth story is of a leper who defeated a larger army in physical battle with the power of prayer. That... doesn't sound like a boy who dares to be different at all, even if it is an interesting story.
As a (curious) (with no head for hard science whatsoever) parent, I'd've loved to see a touch more informative pieces about all the wonderful men in the book; as an avid ballet-goer and a John Green fan, I can't help but appreciate that both John and Sergey Polunin are mentioned.
As some other reviewers have noted, this book definitely poses several interesting questions who are looking at this book from a feminist perspective. On the one hand, there is the fact that as a short biography book, each entry lacks a certain amount of nuance regarding how some of these figures are problematic and that means that some people who deserve a certain amount of criticism don't get it. Those who have mentioned this make a good point, but I'm also curious about how we view the text that is there, because there was a lot of inspiring material here, but more often than not it gave me mixed feelings.
There were a few entries that I Just Liked and was happy to see them, including John Green, Taika Waititi, Christopher Paoloini, and Daniel Radcliffe. Waititi's entry was good because it focused on his background as a Maori filmmaker and even mentioned Hunt for the Wilderpeople, which is an excellent film. I'm definitely biased towards these guys because I have enjoyed their work as artists, but I do think it's no mistake that 75% of them are white. Part of this would come from my own bias, but the other half would also have to do with the fact that they are written to lack marginalization. What I mean by that is, for example, John Green has discussed his experiences with mental illness—but that is not mentioned, instead focusing on the inspiring story that comes from The Fault in Our Stars (which, come to think of it, could be inspiration porn). Daniel Radcliffe's dyspraxia is framed in the same way that most other disabilities in this book are framed: as something that is "overcome," as something that would have prevented these men from living meaningful lives if they had let it stay in their way.
In other words, those were some of my favorite people, but still. Those mixed feelings stayed on.
And those mixed feelings just continued throughout. On the one hand, I cannot deny that all these men have made really impressive contributions to the world. With their endurance, intelligence, leadership, and creativity, they definitely changed things. Furthermore, I think it's great that boys might grow up following men whose masculinity was rooted in protecting the environment, resisting injustice, educating themselves and others, communicating accessibly, and taking pride in their heritage.
But then I think:
What about the fact that Roald Amundsen is credited as the first person at the north pole when Natives probably had made it there before? Why did Brooks decide to list Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt as "Chief Joseph" when the former is his real name—or, at least, his birth name? What did his family call him, and isn't it worth mentioning that his name was changed to Joseph due to the spread of the settler's religion? On that note, what of Uyaquq? It is so cool that he invented a written language for his people, but shouldn't we also question the missionaries that allowed his language-writing to happen? The people who came "spreading the word of Jesus and the Bible" were colonizers, after all—can't the problems with that setup coexist with Uyaquq's amazing achievements?
How should we feel about Baldwin IV. On the one hand, his military victory would seem to contrast the book's goal of portraying boys "who changed the world without killing dragons," but is his violence meant to get a free pass because he was defending his homeland? (If so, why not feature more indigenous men who resisted the efforts of colonizers?) Is he getting a free pass because he is disabled? Is the fact that Baldwin is pictured in full armor erasing his disability, or does it avoid mischaracterizing someone who we probably couldn't portray accurately? What are we to do with Nick Vujicic, whose entire entry seems to fall under the realm of inspiration porn? In a book meant to inspire anyway, are all the entries that deal with disability for naught?
I definitely didn't like that they decided to deadname Alan Hart (the first trans man to get sex reassignment surgery), especially without noting that many trans people are very uncomfortable with people knowing/using their deadnames. Why not include more trans men, too? One significant thing this book did was include the work of modern boys who have taken a stand on something even though they are not adults yet. Why not include someone like Mack Beggs, who is forced to wrestle on the girl's team at his school? Why not include anybody else? This book did a much better job with addressing gay men, but I will say that sometimes it fell into the trap of prioritizing people who support the LGBTQ community, rather than LGBTQ individuals themselves (see: Barack Obama, Daniel Radcliffe, etc.).
I feel like this book was conscious about including men from a variety of races and countries, which is great. The one thing I would say might be missing would be the inclusion of men who worked in the Civil Rights movement. By that, I don't necessarily mean Martin Luther King, Jr. or Malcolm X, because while those two were incredibly important, it took a lot of other men and women to make the Civil Rights movement a thing. Why not include Bayard Rustin, MLK's right hand man, or James L. Farmer, who organized the Freedom Ride? I realize it's a book with limited space, and indeed my own understanding of the world leads me to prioritize the events that took place in what is currently the United States. But still. It's telling to me that while there were men praised for their work for, with, and sometimes as women, people with disabilities, Natives, colonized groups, and, yes, people of color, the people characterized as explicitly fighting against racism were Frederick Douglass, Trevor Noah, and Barack Obama. Not that they didn't/don't, of course. But they sure as heck are not the only ones.
These thoughts consist mainly of my initial reactions; there is much more to say about the people represented in this book and what they did. If I am ever blessed to have nephews, I think I would get them this book. I would want them to see a work where men are celebrated for supporting their daughters and drawing attention to injustice and fighting to make the world a better place. I would hope that this book would inspire them to be that kind of boy. But on that same token, that kind of boy is not without his problems...
Great book for showing diversity, creativity and bravery to young people. Great art which compliments the stories of these interesting humans really well. One of those books for every school library. Highly recommended for schools of all levels.
Ensinnäkin, tän kirjan suomenkielinen nimi on yksi epäonnistuneimmista, mitä tiedän.
The title pretty much sums up this book's contents. It highlights the contributions of 77 different men in alphabetical order. Many of us are accustomed to seeing the names of famous individuals, almost always males, who served as rulers or presidents or fought this or that war. But here the men, boys too, are of a different ilk. This diverse collection of males wrote music, invented things, gazed at the stars, found fossils, danced, sang, grew their hair long, and led a movement to eradicate child labor in sweat shops, among others. There is something for everyone here, and many wonderful examples of boys who chose different paths, thereby making the world a better place for all those around them and possibly charting the course for others to follow them. Each one receives a page of description and a full-page illustration. This volume would be a nice contrast to a steady diet in which the guy always slays that dragon and rescues the princess or starts a war. This would be a great addition to a classroom library since it opens readers' minds to the possibilities of not following the norm but making a difference in your own unique way. Who says that boys have to be violent? Perhaps there is a better way.
I was sent a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I don't think I've ever had such a hard time rating a book. The thing is, this book has some great ideas and it's trying to achieve beautiful things - erasing our toxic notions on masculinity and teaching little boys (and girls) that boys can be something more than muscles and sports and whatever old-fashioned notions we grow up with. And I think this is truly wonderful.
Unfortunately it falls in the category of books from the recent trend of books presenting great humans but not offering more than a short biography and a nice illustration. It does not stand out from the crowd when it comes to this, but as I said, its purpose is great and I think boys and girls should read this book for this reason only!
This book is a very good admirer for those who are afraid! This book teach every boy and even girl to follow their dreams. There is always a hope in the dark if you have the courage to look for it; then nothing will stop you. Not even the countries, Mafia, Hitler or any other person. This book contains stories of men and boys who follow their dream; maybe they are not famous or even the world doesn't know their names; like Tank Man that no one know his name or what happened to him, but he did his job in saving people, in being brave!
This was such a wonderful book. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing Ben Brooks got inspired by Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women to write this version about boys and men. I'm really glad this book tells the stories of 100 wonderful men that did amazing things without the need of violence, "manning up" or supressing feelings like boys are taught to do stereotypically. I think it teaches a very good lesson about what masculinity means, and that you can be an equally valid young man even if you choose not to follow the stereotypes. I've discovered men that I haven't heard of before who achieved incredible things and deserve more attention for their actions than, for example, famous athletes or artists that are looked up to for being good at kicking a ball or playing an instrument even if they are bad people who did horrible things.
Being Argentine, I'm proud that Lionel Messi was included here, because I think he's a good man that fought for his dream in spite of all the obstacles in the way, and I do believe he is an example for young boys, unlike Maradona, who may have also been a very good football player 40 years ago, but he is known to be a drug addict, a sexist, wife-beater pig who should not be looked up to. I would have been very mad if he was included in this collection of stories.

Even if this is a kind of "plagiarism" to the Rebel Girls books, I appreciate the concept was used for good to depict positive male roles in this collection and I encourage every adult to read this to young boys and teach them how to become fine men while avoiding toxic masculinity.
Oh my, what a fantastic book! I remember one time when my son was young; he asked me why there were no books about boys like him - boys who were not interested in sports, had a huge heart, and just generally seemed to be invisible. This book is for those boys - the boys who feel they could be as great as a football star in things they care about.
Brooks' book highlights 77 men who changed the world because they believed in themselves. Sometimes it just takes a little time, patience, and a lot of faith to find where one belongs.
My favorite people included in this book are: Patch Adams, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, Roald Amundsen, David Attenborough, Jesse Eisenberg, Jim Henson, William Kamkwamba, Sergei Polunin, and Vedran Smailovic.
We need more books about different kind of heros, champions, pathmakers, and strong characters.
