He's world famous. The most eligible bachelor in Hollywood. Owns the stage and thousands of hearts around the world. The bassist of Unquiet Mind. Rock royalty.
But he's none of that to me.
To me, he's just Wyatt. The teenager I met in my best friend's garage. I promised him he'd never get into my bed or into my heart. It turns out I lied.
Anne Malcom has been an avid reader since before she can remember, her mother responsible for her book addiction. It started with magical journeys into the world of Hogwarts and Middle Earth, then as she grew up her reading tastes grew with her. Her obsession with books and romance novels in particular gave Anne the opportunity to find another passion, writing. Finding writing about alpha males and happily ever afters more fun than reading about them, Anne is not about to stop any time soon.
*Small spoilers from previous books * If you know anything about Unquiet Mind and all the previous characters who got their own book you knew this book would be great but after reading it I have to say it’s epic. Emma and Wyatt met when Emma was a young girl struggling to survive on her own and Wyatt was a 17-year-old boy who even then had girls falling at his feet. When they met both were attracted to the other but Emma did something no other girl ever did, she said no.
Years have gone by and they have grown closer through life and while making sure their friend Lexie was ok. Even when Emma wasn’t ok she was always their for the people she loved and cared about, and While Wyatt was jetting around the world girls at every stop Emma was still the girl who none could compare to and the girl he could always count on. Attraction was always there but Emma would never put up with Wyatt’s crap.
When Lexie’s life was put in jeopardy both Wyatt and Emma found comfort in each other and it changed their relationship and yet it didn’t. Then Emma took a step she never thought she would and at the end of their time together Emma never would have guessed what would happen and more importantly what other consequences would come. Now Wyatt and Emma’s life have been turned upside down in more ways than either could have guessed. One thing is for sure nothing can ever be easy for these two strong volatile people but the other thing that’s is certain is that no one could be more perfect for the other.
I loved this book, but honestly I knew I would however I never would have been able to guess how much I would love this book. It was so good to be back in this world not only to see the previous main characters but also to finally see Wyatt find his perfect match and that also being someone who kept him on his toes. Wyatt is a typical Rock star who gets what and who he wants. But Wyatt also loves fiercely when someone is brought into his life that he cares about. Emma has a hard shell that’s almost impenetrable with good reason. At the same time Emma will do anything including neglect herself for those she loves.
These two big characters couldn’t be anything but huge when they came together and they are but not only them but also their story. Watching them fall in love was amazing and watching them grow and find their way together as well as their own place in this world makes this book something special. From the very first page I was hooked on this book. Anne Malcom does such an amazing job drawing us in and hooking us. She has the ability to create characters that aren’t one or two dimensional but real and complicated chracters. I wish I could put into words how great this book is, it’s a book that you can’t put down but then never want it to end. I fell asleep while reading this book and not because it was boring but because I didn’t want to put it down and I didn’t unless I absolutely had to (like falling asleep involuntarily). It’s also a book I look back on and wish I could read again for the first time. But since that’s not an option it will be on my re-read list.
"I don't write songs, words," he rasped. "I'm the melody guy. But babe, you're too chaotic to put into a melody."
Between finishing this book and writing this review I put myself on hold. Because I wasn't quite sure how to rate this book fairly. I rarely give 2 stars or lower. Usually I put myself through the process of DNF and not rating a book. However this book held my interest long enough to finish it, still in hope it might get better.
"The notes, the chords, the way his fingers thrummed at the strings - it was music. No, it was art. Because somehow it was full of pain, of anguish, love. Us."
Sadly to me it didn't get better, and there were only few parts I really liked and enjoyed. But they were the minority. I'd like to name a few things that bothered me: - To me this book is full of negativity. Both characters saw themselves as unworthy to love the other or to be loved by the other. They had mostly different reasons to believe so, but the core of those thoughts was the same. Even the banter between Emma and Wyatt which were supposed to be funny were only semi-funny to me. Mostly they argued about the same topics. They constantly fought each other and themselves on how they are not in love with the other. - To me there was no character development, no real development in their relationship. From the beginning to the end it was constantly the same to me. Nothing really changed. - I simply couldn't establish a connection to either of the character. They felt distant. I couldn't feel them or with them. - The book was mostly written in Emma's POV and the very few times we got Wyatt's POV it was quite short, written in third POV and I couldn't see a reason in the storyline why exactly at that point in the story we got his POV. It felt uncoordinated and to me it didn't add any value to the story. - The beginning - the first 15% felt like a wrap-up of events that were happening in the first 3 books so that I kept asking myself if these are kind of important to the story. Even though I haven't read the first three books I'd like to say, I wouldn't have need to have those first 15% to understand Wyatt's and Emma's story.
"I had some bone-deep feeling that things were falling apart so they could fall into place. And I'd fought against it precisely because it felt so right."
To whomever is reading this review: Please, go and make up your own opinion by reading this book. If you love the blurb, if you love the cover, if you loved the other books in this series, I'm pretty sure this book will fulfill your needs. Only because it wasn't a book for me, it still can be a book for you. Yes, I had my troubles reading it, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have the same troubles.
To the author, I'm truly sorry my first book by you wasn't something for me. I'm always one who writes honest reviews. I write them like I felt the book. I'm a defender of honest reviews, even though the "bad" ones are the hardest ones for me to write in hope I pick the right words without offending the author.
I've tried multiple times with this author but I just don't think this author is for me. I find all her characters too juvenile and ditzy for me. It's annoying.
"I met him when he was a teenage boy playing bass in my best friend's garage. It wasn't love at first sight. No fireworks. No butterflies. Nothing. Nothing to warn me that in the years to come, this boy would turn into a man. One of the most famous rockstars in the world. And he'd ruin my fucking life."
Wyatt and Emma were quite the ride! Extraordinary. Everyone knows I fangirl Anne Malcom pretty hard and this book is a perfect example of why.
It's brave. It's honest. It's funny AF and it's also gonna rip your heart out at times. I might have sent her SHOUTY CAPS messages A LOT in this one, but I still love her. Buckle up for an emotional roller coaster with these two!!! Love isn't always easy.
I'm not referring to characters we've met in previous books. I'm talking about the same characters with different names, the same words, the same sameness.
Note to authors: Angst is not a plot. It's a weak plot device, as well. Angst should be an organic product of a story rather than the engine.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and I voluntarily reviewed it. Thank you Anne Malcom!
Anne Malcom has a certain style to her writing. A flair. Her voice is unique. It has beautiful flow and is saturated with personality. It is so uniquely and soulfully Anne. This book was no exception. If anything, she took her writing to the next level with this book.
Mistake’s Melody will frustrate you. It will make you want to rattle both Emma and Wyatt, but it will all be worth it because you will love every single page of it. Their story will resonate with you. The words will speak to your heart and your soul. There is a certain poetic aspect to Malcom’s writing that just hits you in the gut. It’s not flashy, it’s not trying to be fancy, it just is. It has it’s place and it breathes with the story.
Malcom tackles some hard subject matter, and has been in her latest books, and she always does it with such respect and grace. She beings awareness while keeping the issues honest and un-hollywood. She does them justice flawlessly.
The Unquiet Mind series will always be one of my all-time favourite series. I feel at home with these characters, and I always take my time reading these books, because I want to experience every fucking syllable, just like when you listen to a song, and I mean TRULY listen to a song, and feel every note’s imprint on your soul. THAT is what Malcom does and THAT is why I love her writing.
I am sad to say that this book was not for me. I have loved the first few books the author wrote esp Making The Cut but I feel all her books feel a bit the same lately. Wyatt is one of the reasons I don't like rockstar books, random hook ups, drugs, drinking etc. But Melody also has sex with random men so at least it's not one rule for him but different for her. I feel all the authors heroine seem to be the same lately. All feisty, dreadful backgrounds with either emotional or physical abuse or both. They are all strong, argumentative, fight my corner heroines, and there's nothing wrong with that I like a strong heroine but it feels like they are all like it. I loved Lucy in Firestorm but it's getting old for me. I would recommend reading the previous books in the series as this book runs alongside in timeline for the first part so there will be major spoilers if you haven't read them. The Hero and heroine meet before the band hits big and is still playing in the garage and are in and out of each other's lives for years. We get time jumps with each chapter at the start, a month, a year etc. During this time you get a vibe that Wyatt is interested in Melody but she doesn't catch on to this and they never get involved romantically or should I say sexually, as these 2 don't do relationships. What I don't understand is that he series paints out a huge bond between the band and esp a few friends like Lexi and Mia but they feel incapable of extending that love and loyalty to a girlfriend or boyfriend.
For me when the Hero and heroine have a conversation and he utters the words " I never want kids" the rest of the story was pretty obvious. There are hints at the next story, Noah, who surprise surprise has a really messed up childhood too. It also seems the ending follow the same formula as the other books but for different reasons Melody almost dying at the end. There was no huge ex-drama, there is small interaction with a security guard Melody slept with and also no intimate details of anyone other than the Hero and heroine.
Sorry it's a negative review, the writing is good but it just feels depressing.
HEA, if you can call their relationship a happy one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Emma and Wyatt met fighting, and they've continued for almost a decade. Wyatt - 1/4 of the group Unquiet Minds and Emma - the sad girl whose parents were completely destructive in a way few will ever understand.
After many years of fighting separately, the time is right for Wyatt and Emma to fight together. Unfortunately Wyatt is going to continue to make some piss poor decisions. And when he's done making those mistakes he might find right where he was always meant to be.
"True art makes you uncomfortable," I said, moving to stand. "It makes you question your life after and before looking at it. It makes you imagine what the artist was living when they painted it. But the answer is they were living the painting."
Don't be afraid to get stuck in with Wyatt and Emma, you won't regret it! Even though it takes Wyatt and Emma a little longer, it's all that much sweeter for the love they lose, and gain, and fight to get back."
For everyone of Anne Malcom's stories I have to be in the right place at the right time, but with all of them I come away a little bit more loved, a little bit stronger that she loves these characters, and her stories enough to share them.
Of all the books in the series this is the most character driven its a change of pace from the MC involvement and I loved it.
Wyatt has always intrigued me he was always so closed off. I just knew when we got to see the real him he could be a complete surprise. The author doesn't write weak women and Emma is another strong opinionated woman who doesn't make things easy. Like me your probably used to the man being the a****le in the story but get ready because Emma is going to shock you.
It's probably strange but I loved the snarkiness of their relationship all their arguments are like foreplay. Both Wyatt and Emma have had difficult pasts that have shaped who they are and how they act. Loved that she doesn't give in too easy and that she makes Wyatt work to prove himself. They have a bumpy road to navigate with both making frequent mistakes. Love isn't easy and the road these two travel is no exception.
The author is one who tackles many genres with ease, I'm looking forward not only to the next in this series but also what else is to come.
Once again, I have fallen in love with this series. This is the series that introduced me to Anne and I haven't looked back. The characters are full of life and depth, you can't help but fall in love with them. Emma and Wyatt have been dancing around one another since they were teens. It has never been easy for either of them. Life has not been kind to them in their younger years. They both were raised in situations that scarred them, emotionally, and it stayed with them into their adult lives. Each using whatever they could to just numb or hide the pain. Through it all they have loved each other, they are probably the only two people that could ever be the one for the other. There is a back and forth, both fighting their pull to one another but also know deep inside that they'll never find anyone that will ever accept them. A monkey wrench is thrown n to the mix that neither expected. It definitely makes things more difficult. You are laughing one moment, yelling the next, and in between you get a few aww moments. It's an awesome story, and I loved it, but I have to admit at least twice in this story I hated Wyatt. I can honestly say I have never hated one of her characters, I did Wyatt in a couple of moments, he did redeem himself of course, in the best way possible, but I still found myself with my jaw almost unhinged, wanting to reach through my Kindle to slap him upside the head. The other thing that made me sad was the realization that this series will end with Noah's story(which I can't wait for). I know it can't last forever, but a part of me wishes it could. You become so immersed in their lives you feel as if you are living it right there with them. It's like that with all her stories. One of the many reasons I love her and her work. If you haven't read anything by her? you really need to. You will not be disappointed.
I have been looking forward to Wyatt’s book and it is so good! He is so much more than meets the eye... so dreamy! You know those stories where the hero is a huge asshole that you just love anyway? Well, in this story, the heroine is the huge asshole, but she is loveable af. I couldn’t help but root for Emma and Wyatt all along, despite their stupidity sometimes. This is a great story full of emotions and angst. I loved it and all of the books in this series and the other connected series by this author. They are all great reads. Definitely recommend!
Heart-wrenchingly beautiful, this book owned me from the very first word. It deserves so much more than 5 stars.
Wyatt and Emma have known each other since they were teens. Before Unquiet Mind was a household name. Before...
That was before. Before the fame. Before they fell. Before the hurt and pain of a love that would forever be tainted by their pasts.
This book wrecked me. These characters came alive on the page. And I was all too ready and willing to consume every word they spoke.
Emma grew up in a house that had no love. Wyatt was constantly belittled and never knew his true worth. Together they found they were enough.
"I loved you when I knew it was a bad idea. And I knew that it would end in pain. But I did it anyway. I don't blame you for breaking my heart, Wyatt. I blame myself for letting you."
All of my emotions were left in pieces on the floor while reading this book. The push and pull, the angst...gah! I wanted to shake sense into both Wyatt and Emma. To get their shit together; to be happy. Their love was like a rose, beautiful to look at but you will bleed from the pain of thorns.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review! This book broke me then put me back together again. It was amazing- seriously a 10 star read. Emma and Wyatt fought long and hard, went through some serious ups and downs and ended up happy. I love their sarcasm and snark. Emma is hilarious at times. This book was awesome and I love that we get to see a lot of Sam, Lexie, Kill, Mia and Noah. I'm sad that the series is coming to an end after the next book. Definitely recommend!!
I liked the book but Emma was too much for me. Her constant bickering, yelling, and just anger got so annoying. I think you can be "hard" without all of that. I enjoyed the last chapter and epilogue the most haha
No. You will not find previous books in this series on my blog. I like to read the page from the ass, so I reached for the fourth part of the series. You asked me, too, whether it is a story about the Killian theme and Lexi and only now, after reading the answer you can not. Although it is very often they appear here. But more about that in a moment. I just wanted to add that the cover to "Melody's Mistake" is another prettiest cover, right next to "The Kiss Thief" 2019 years. Okay, I not yadda yadda.
Emma's best friend Lexi always tried to keep out of the way. The girl had a tough childhood, her parents do not necessarily want to have a baby and smack it at every opportunity. Best friends was just Emma and Mia Lexi. They przygarnęły her to him and helped spread its wings. Emma had contact with Killian, who was the boyfriend Lexi and relive their parting as much as Lexi herself. The girl knew the other guys from Unquiet Mind, but tried to not fall in love in them, because he knew it was not going to end well. For it is they are rock stars. But Wyatt Summers, whom I first met when she was seventeen years came to her heart for a long time. And although the girl stubbornly refused to fall in love, so Wyatt worked on it all at once harder and harder. And one day, after a good dose of tequila we both forgot and ended up in the bed. Emma remembered about that night and regretted it. The more that a month later she had to remind her about Wyatt, because one-time sex has brought results, which both wanted to avoid.
For the first dozen pages to the end I could not be found in this position. Mainly due to the fact that it was still described Lexi and Emma was on the sidelines, although she is the main character. But after one situation I understood the author's intention, and after that everything was in its place, and Emma actually led the way in the whole book, to the very end. Anne Malcolm Emma and knowledge built on the adventures of Wyatt (not necessarily happy) with Lexi. At the beginning we jump every week, month, year, or several years, and there have been cases cited by the Emma Wyatt could meet and get to know. Only after this passionate night, the whole story has focused around the two protagonists and pulls.
Wyatt is the bass player in the band. I must admit that very well author wove his career, hearings and passion for bass in the whole book. Emma finds herself in art, although her passion here relegated to the sidelines, because the effects of the night with Wyatt were to be felt over the next several years. The characters are really well to create what more we have to return to old, familiar to us from earlier books and characters are all nicely connected with each other. Lexi does not feel the excess, which had not Emma, would form the main entry turned.
Very, very I like it, like Anne Malcolm presented the relationship between Wyatt and Emma. Although they slept together and are to be connected forever by this one night and although Wyatt from the beginning trying to convince Emma to himself and recommends to her, like a peacock she further has it deep somewhere and tells him to get lost. To the very end! I thought, and it will eventually agree to a relationship, but no! This zaparte still went in and said, "I do not love you," "Wyatt is not us", "we are not together." It came out really great and I liked it. Stubbornness Emma knows no bounds!
"Melody's Mistake" is the fourth volume in the series "Unquiet Mind," but while reading this do not completely feel. You can read this item as a single piece and you will not feel unsatisfied. Great, addictive reading, which is written so nice language that makes you want to read it. I would definitely recommend!
A common occurrence whenever I read a book by Anne Malcom, major book hangover! Emma and Wyatt’s love story is not an easy one. They both had horrendous childhoods that have affected them into adulthood. However, they are both survivors and had the strength to move on and make something of themselves, but still riddled with scars. We definitely get more of Emma’s pain so I was able to empathize more with her. The early years for her were tough and so heartbreaking, but she dragged herself out of the gutter all on her own, even though there were so many who were willing to help her. She already had some major trust issues so when Wyatt hurt her, he almost destroyed her. Due to his own upbringing, he stayed away from her because of his fear of inflicting more pain on her, instead he hurt her more than anyone else. But with the help of his bandmates, he realizes his mistakes and makes it his mission to protect her and have her in his life.
Another beautifully written story of two broken souls who finally find what they were denied when they were children. They are absolutely perfect for each other. I loved it all!!
3.5 I have to say, I had mixed feelings about this book. Did I want to keep reading it and see what happened? Yes. Was there some things that I didn't expect in the book? Yes. Was I like come on already, we know you are a 100% badass and don't want to love anyone? Yes. There were times that I thought the author believed the reader have dementia with all of the reminders of what happened previously in the SAME book. It wasn't like it was in two books back, nope darlin, we just read about that, no reminders needed. Also, the dual medical revival stunt was a bit lame. Overall, I enjoyed Emma and Wyatt's character. I liked the banter and chemistry. Good book for a quick read on a rainy weekend.
Anne Malcom has done it again!!!! As soon as I read the first page I knew I was a goner. It was time to lock myself away and devour Emma and Wyatt's story. Anne has this magical gift of bringing the characters to life. I don't want to give anything away cause this is must read for all. I laughed, cried, yelled and was heartbroken for these two but the emotional rollercoaster ride is so worth it.
I absolutely recommend this book and the Unquiet Mind series!
Anne Malcom has done it again! The continuation of her Unquiet Mind series has left me absolutely floored and even more in love with this series than I was before.
Emma and Wyatt's story isn't easy, but goodness is it worth it. These two will forever be in my heart. I yelled, laughed, I swooned, I teared up.
Emma is officially one of my favorite Characters in this series. She's so strong and beautiful.
Trust me when I say you need this book!!! I absolutely recommend it!!
I’ve been waiting for this book forever. I’m sure it’s been forever. But, part of me knew it would be a tough read. I should never doubt the incredible story telling of AM. She is amazing and this story is amazing. I think in any other author’s hands I would have hated both of these characters. They have serious commitment issues, but AM overcomes all this and whenever I was afraid too much angst and heartache would break the story, she pulls me back into the light. She never lets the story go into complete train wreck mess level. We are in good hands. The epilogue made my romantic heart sing- beautiful. I can’t imagine liking this book as much as I did if I hadn’t read the first books in the series. I love this series. I love AM. And I loved Emma and Wyatt- finally!
Book 4 of Unquiet Mind. PLEASE read them in order... you don’t want to spoil it for yourself.
Wyatt & Emma were as stubborn and difficult as I knew they would be. Both come from a very damaged past- parents that had no business being parents. And now they have to figure out how to do life together. Spoiler alert...it doesn’t come easy. Or peacefully.
I really enjoyed this book from Anne Malcolm. It was the first I'd read in this series, but it didn't make a difference that I hadn't read the first 3, I still got pulled in.
Mistake's Melody lost a star for me because of the mid section. I'm all for a bit of push and pull, but the constant, seemingly never ending back and forth between Wyatt and Emma got tiresome after a while. I found parts a bit predictable, but enjoyable never the less. Also, it's in desperate need of a proof read. It had obviously been edited, but there are parts that make no sense due to words not being removed and also repeated lines that should have been deleted - I read an ARC, so this may have been fixed up for the final copy. I'm not a big fan of the switch between 1st and 3rd person with different POVs either, but it wasn't so often that I couldn't read it.
All in all, I liked these characters and I intend to go back and find out the story behind Lexie and Kill as they really intrigued me.
ARC given by the Amazing Anne Malcom. Ill tell you she is becoming one of my ultimate FAVES!!! I’ve read all the books in this series and I will say that Wyatt is by far my favorite… OMG I absolutely loved him and Emma… I loved the feistiness of Emma and the complete Alpha of Wyatt.. There were a few times I wanted to hit or punch both because of stupid shit that went down. Wyatt has always been so closed off… or putting on a front.. I was sooooo happy when we got to see the real him.. this made me love him even more. . Neither Emma or Wyatt had Merry the best upbringing.. but I think that helped define the relationship and help them find the love that had always been there.. buried deep down.. If you love sexy rockers def check this one out.. Anne is the best!! I soooo can not wait for Noah.. I think his is going to be absolutely epic!!
Sweet Holy Hell This author. If ever I need someone to rip me apart, make me laugh, make me cry, and then put me back together again then she is the author to do it to me. EVERY. TIME. The way that she writes characters that have so many layers of pain but still manage to be survivors astounds me. She creates a visceral sensation that is unlike just about anything I have ever encountered before when it comes to reading. I feel it in every ounce of my being. She gives me words that I didn't know I wanted or even needed. Case and point, this story, I loved both Wyatt and Emma before but had no idea I needed to know more than a true glossing over of their story. Well, that is a lie because I would take a story written about the milkman from this author.
In typical fashion, this author created a story that was flawed, beautiful, and bumpy. It dealt with a pretty heavy subject (a couple of them in fact) which was refreshing to see broached. Her characters were jaded and bore the scars that their childhood had left on them. They way they showed their affection in their bantering and fighting had me laughing and also feeling sad for them. Yet, I understood it because it was safer to hide behind that then to show the fear of what feelings were lying underneath the surface.
I could relate to Emma in so many ways, having lived a tumultuous childhood myself. It is hard to let the cynicism go and trust especially when the life that has been dealt has proven that love comes with conditions. She uses words and sarcasm to keep people at bay because it is safer. Even though she truly loves Wyatt, it is easier to push him away especially after he makes a mistake regarding how he handled a certain situation.
"You can't turn all those mistakes and try to make them a fucked -up melody." Her tongue is barbed and at times lethal and would give an adder a run at being the most vicious. Yet in the same breath, she has the jokes, and sarcasm, and glib one-liners that make her endearing. Her fears are legitimate and her struggle for self-worth is heartbreaking.
Bless Wyatt's heart for seeing all the chaos and standoffishness and realizing that a rose wouldn't be a rose without thorns. He is equal part a charming devoted gentleman juxtaposed with sexy rock-god. Some of the passages he said to Emma in order for her to see his true feelings was the stuff of legends. AND, the stuff he said to make her see her self-worth was even better. My jaded black heart just about grew out of my chest.
"I know," he whispered. "that's why I want you to marry me, to spend your life with me. Because you're not my fan, you're my equal. And if anyone's going to worship at someone's altar, it's gonna be me." He kissed the side of my neck. "Because of your cynicism, because of your pain, your strength, your scars...Your heart, your smile, your damaged and magnificent soul. I don't give a fuck if the world worships me. If you don't. I just give a fuck if you're by my side, not at my knees."
Also, Add in his dirty talking mouth, sweet lord I just can't with this guy. I had no idea he would become one of my favorite heroes of the many amazing ones that this author has written but he did. I guess the old saying is true, its the quiet unassuming ones that we need to watch out for. Dimples help too.
"But I'm an asshole who's gonna eat your pussy, 'til you scream, fuck you 'til you can't remember your name and make sure everything you need is at your fingertips. So you got a problem with that?"
Like every book this author writes, there is an underlying message that offers so many things but especially hope. In this case, it Mistakes doesn't necessitate something that is bad or that shouldn't have happened. How they are handled determines if someone is a disillusioned victim or whether they, in turn, grow from it. Often times, or at least in my case, it is the Universes way of giving me just what I need to propel me forward, teach me a lesson, and help me gain the insight needed to open up and allow myself to be both vulnerable and resilient. This author wrote two of my favorite books last year and already in the first month of this year has sealed another favorite. I cannot wait to see what else is coming from her.
I’m not sure where to start with my review of Mistake’s Melody from the Unquiet Mind series. I wasn’t even 30% into the book before I was blubbering through the tears and shooing everyone away from me because I was so deep into the characters. One of the things I love most about Anne Malcom’s writing is that her characters are never shiny without imperfections. If anything she has a knack for putting her characters flaws front and center and making us fall in love with them instead of revolt against them.
In Mistake’s Melody when learn the story of Wyatt, the bass player for Unquiet Mind and Emma the best friend to Unquiet Mind’s lead singer Lexie. The book starts out in a sort of flash back mode, but I love that the author doesn’t leave us in flashback for the majority of the book. One thing I am personally not a fan of is when a book has flashback, but it’s either every other chapter or the first half of the book. Sometimes a flashback can become unnecessary to the story and we end up with more information that we needed, thus leaving me bored and skipping pages. This story does not do that at all. Anne does a good job of giving us the information we need from the flashback and then moving on. Once we are in “present day” of the book she dives into the now of who Wyatt and Emma are and I have to tell you that Emma is probably one of my favorite characters from all of Anne’s books. She’s so emotionally flawed but strong and even though as a reader I wanted her to break through so she could be with Wyatt, I loved that she never let him get by with anything. If he does something that screws with her, she holds him accountable. It seems like it books, even when the heroine is strong, she constantly gives in or doesn’t hold strong to her feelings, but Emma never does that. It’s not about holding a grudge, it’s more about not allowing him to just get away with screwing up. Wyatt of course has his own set of issues that he is dealing with as well so between the two of them it seems like they just running into brick walls instead of breaking through them.
If you haven’t read the book then you might want to stop here because this may be a spoiler issue for you. When Wyatt and Emma finally come together there is a huge conflict that happens and then even bigger than that, Emma ends up pregnant. Now, I am a total sucker for an unplanned baby in a romance. I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea and honestly I have read some books where it just felt like they were throwing a baby in the mix because they didn’t know what else to do but I loved this happening with Wyatt and Emma. Again I am total sucker for this trope but with everything else that happened in the book it made sense to the storyline.
I loved getting to read about the characters from the other Unquiet Mind books and how they all played into the relationship between Wyatt and Emma.
Loved this book, it is a great addition to the Unquiet Minds series. For those of you that have read the other books in this series, I think we all knew than when Wyatt, the band bassist, fell for someone it would be epic. When seventeen year old Wyatt met Emma, his band mate Lexie’s best friend, he was intrigued because she was one of only a few females that refused to give him the time of day. Wyatt, as the rest of the band, had grown up in less than ideal conditions with parents that failed miserably in their responsibilities. He cut ties with his family and promised himself that he would not perpetuate the misery they inflicted on him by making children of his own. He took to being a “Rock god” with the appropriate fervor and took full advantage of all the rock and roll life style had to offer. And though he slept his way through a plethora of women, one stayed on his mind and he kept track of her as a friend. He relished the fact that she refused to give him a free pass to be a jerk and called him on his bad behavior. Nor did she ever reach out to him for anything other than conversation and friendship. Emma was raised in an extremely cruel and abusive environment and left as soon as she turned 18 and could legally do so. She had no advanced education or skills but set out to be a self sufficient, strong woman. She struggled for many years and though her friends had become huge successes and had the world at their feet she never asked them for help or confessed her dire straits to them. She became a well know art procurer and travelled the world obtaining art pieces for wealthy buyers. She built a reputation as a badass in her field never refusing an assignment no matter how dangerous the environment she found herself in might be. She made a success of her life and like Wyatt had no thoughts to ever settle down and raise children as she had first hand knowledge of how miserable the life a child could have with parents that cared only for themselves and she had all she could do to take care of herself. Emma had grown up with Lexie and her mother as her surrogate family and always showed up to support them. When Lexie was hospitalized she came to be by her friend’s side and during this visit, things between her and Wyatt changed, they became closer, taking physical comfort from each other while waiting to see if Lexie would recover. The sparks of attraction that always existed between the 2 of them became more and they eventually acted on that attraction with a surprising result. Now they find themselves needing to make choices about what to do and how to move forward with the feelings or to just part forever.
This story has to have one of the most beautiful covers I have seen with an epic story that has made this one of my top reads. I seriously could not get enough of this book, I did not want to stop reading the story for anything and at the same time, I did not want to finish reading. I am a massive fan of rock star reads and I have to say this story has to be my favourite because I could not get enough of Emma and Wyatt. But also one big thing that made this such an incredible read is the writing of this story. Anne Malcolm incredible writing skills creating moments in this story that completely ripped my heart out and then crack up laughing in the next few pages. This goes to show how well written the author did with this story.
Emma was the strong heroine that had a lot of heartbreak and pain that she carries around with her form her childhood. But she does not let anyone in enough to know what she endured in her life. There were times where my heart completely broke at the emotions and insecurities that she had about herself. I absolutely loved the way the sarcasm and snark that she always gave people. there were a lot of times she made me crack up laughing with the banter she got into with the other characters.
Wyatt was the hot rock star that had a lot more to him than just being the partying playboy. He was really sweet and loving towards Emma throughout the story. He came off as a jerk sometimes in the story but it is obvious that he acted that way because of his own insecurities that he carried around with him. There were times were he completely melted my heart with the things that he said to Emma and how much he loved. Wyatt has to be one of my favourite heroes of a rock star romance.
Mistakes melody really suited the name of this story because the characters make a lot of mistakes in the story but their love together was too strong for them to walk away from each other. I found these two characters were perfect for each other and loved the way they always fought with each other. I loved the way they showed their love for each other in the most unconventional ways and I could not get enough of them. I cannot wait to read what more this author has in store with this series.
This was rough. I almost never give two star ratings (I’m very much a person who’s scale starts at 3-stars) but this is my second in two months... Eek.
First of all, it’s my own fault for trusting a recommendation that said I didn’t need to read the series start to finish to understand this book [Who is Ava and Steven?! (Was that his name?) How is Lexie’s mom in her late thirties with a child who I think is supposed to be 25?! (More on that below) What is this gang that gets brought up like twice?!]
But more than that I wonder if maybe what I read wasn’t the final draft? Is that possible? While I do enjoy picking up on the smaller mistakes (mainly grammatical and spelling errors) for the sheer fact that it points that everything has faults no matter how good - this just read like it never saw an editor. While the contradictory statements back-to-back paragraphs, wrong words, and incomplete thoughts plagued the story there were worse things that needed an editor.
I’m talking about the timeline (because while I’m bad at math I know for a fact the years don’t line up), the first 40-odd pages that try (and fail) to summarize what all happens in the first three books, and the character name drops (from a quick search on Goodreads I think spans atleast three different series?)
I will say that this book, for all its faults did have some redeeming qualities. I loved Lexie - I think she was my absolute character, which I think comes from the fact that she is the most fleshed out. Which makes sense considering her and Killian’s story was two books (thank you Goodreads). I also loved Wyatt’s relationship with her. I find especially in romance novels author’s heavily rely on enforced tropes that men don’t know how to handle women and I didn’t feel that between Lexie and Wyatt. While later you find out he was using his concern about Lex as an excuse to call Emma, I definitely felt that the friendship between them was real.
All in all, I don’t plan to read anything else by this author. To be honest I simply don’t care about her characters enough to try and read that many books to decipher her bad writing.
P. S. This might be the longest review I’ve ever wrote.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Does Ann Malcom know how to write anything that doesn’t destroy me in the best possible way?!?! This woman… she just slays me! Every single time I open a book with her name on the cover, I know… I just KNOW… it’s going to rock me! Mistake’s Melody hit a high note! The Unquiet Mind series is one of my top favorite series. If I could get this entire series made an audiobooks… my year would be made! I seriously binged these books before Mistake’s Melody. I’m so glad I did… I love the feel of this group of friends.
So Wyatt and Emma were the couple I’ve been lusting after. I just knew that they were going to be a trip… and they did not let me down! Miss Malcom shows us how talented of a writer she is with this book… it’s so honest and in your face. But Anne Malcom brings humor and heartbreak to this story as well. I just knew it would though… with a character like Wyatt and Emma, it was going to happen. These two show you that love isn’t easy… love is work… love can be brutal.
Anne Malcom writes like a dream. You can’t help but feel like this is a real and true story and Anne’s just chasing them and jotting down all their stupidity and wonderfulness. I think that’s one of the reasons that she’s such a great author. You FEEL everything in her words and it feels like truth. I think Anne’s trademark fun and humor is perfectly shown in this story… it’s this perfect balance or love and snark… and HEAT! I can’t forget the love and heat that intertwines its way through her work. I loved this story and would throw all my stars at Mistake’s Melody if I could… it deserves all the stars!
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.
