Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon

Rate this book
This book has seen unprecedented demand. The first printing sold out in a matter of days. The second printing has now finally made it to the publisher and the books are back in circulation. This particular edition seems to have struck a vital nerve among readers. Designed to be read by all Christians regardless of sect or denomination. This edition has a unique appeal perhaps because unlike almost every similar publication over the last 50 years, this one's "appeal-to-authority" is not that of the scholars, but rather the authority of Prophets and Apostles . In the world of Bible publishing "annotation" has been a staple for decades. However for readers of the Book of Mormon, it is a new concept, making this release a first-of-a-kind.

The familiar text has been treated in three unique 1st, LITERARY treatment of the text; 2nd, addition of 250 "INSIGHT" pages; 3rd, use of vast amounts of COLOR in a variety of forms.

The editors chose the 1920 (public domain) edition of the text, which content has not been altered; The formatting and literary presentation of the text has been revised, altered and enhanced extensively. e.g. combines verses into coherent paragraphs, then adds descriptive headers within chapters. Verse numbers are superscripted; poetical stanzas shown in their Hebraic forms; quotation marks and indentation identify voices of speakers, and much more;

Ancient Hebraic writing forms such as psalms, chiasmus, parallelisms, etc. are shown in-context along with font colors which establish textual hierarchy.

Over ten years in the making, this volume gives powerful testimony to the fact that the Book of Mormon is indeed a rich Hebrew literary masterpiece centered on Jesus Christ and translated through the gift and power of God. The chief-editor of this annotated edition, David R. Hocking of Raleigh, North Carolina, began the project as a way of enhancing his own study of the Book of Mormon.

In addition to wonderful illustrations and photographs, this edition of the Book of Mormon gives historical and archeological evidence. I also loved the quotes from prophets that accompany passages. There is a big push to "prove" that the location is in the eastern United States. I'm not sure that I'm convinced because I've believed for so long that the Book of Mormon peoples inhabited the Central American area, but it was interesting to read with a different setting in mind. It doesn't change my testimony of the Book of Mormon, no matter where the events occurred.

My friend Alex Carr gave me this edition after I wrote the "A Little Deeper" series back in 2018. It was a very kind and generous gift.

I tried REALLY hard this year to read the Book of Mormon slowly, doing the weekly reading assignment and no more. I added the last few assignments this week because I'm going to Boston and taking this huge book would be too hard. I really stink at reading things over weeks and months. I wouldn't have done well when books were serialized. (I don't even like waiting for the next episode of the British Baking Show to air.)

Honestly this edition looks attractive at first glance. Expensive, but the publisher took time to make people wowed by the leather and gilt pages. However, the notes and annotations inside are not good scholarship. For example, they have a picture of the skeleton of a tall Irish man who died in America and try to pass that off as ancient bones showing taller than average people once lived in the heartland area. They rely heavily on other "artifacts" that have been proven fraudulent. It's more destructive to good Book of Mormon scholarship than anything. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Read the actual Book of Mormon, not this pablum.

Had this "commentary" for a while, and read through it a fair bit. If you want a textbook example for how to desecrate a sacred religious text, this is it. Loaded with scriptural misreadings, outright error, and bad writing. Don't waste your money or your time.
