Buffalo police detective Lauren Riley risks her life to close the book for good on a killer who's never paid for his crimes.
When cold case detective Lauren Riley returns to work after being stabbed by a fellow police officer, it's clear that her troubles are far from over. The body of a young woman has been found in the same woods as a murder victim from one of Lauren's most horrifying cases. It doesn't take long for Lauren to be back at square one confronting David Spencer, the quietly deranged man she could never prove was a killer. Lauren convinces the police chief to put together a task force to uncover the connections between the brutal slaying of both women and the murder of two cops. But things go south quickly, forcing Lauren into a deadly game that she can't afford to lose.
Cold Case Detective Lauren Riley is back on the job after being stabbed in the line of duty. She and her partner, Shane Reese, find themselves investigating a body dumped in the woods in the exact same site as a victim from one of Lauren's previous cases. She quickly recognizes the tie to David Spencer, a clever kid whom Lauren helped get off on a murder charge while she was working as a Private Investigator. Once he was acquitted, Lauren realized he was a cold-blooded psychopath, and she's been haunted by it (and him) ever since. Lauren is put on a Task Force investigating the killing--and the unsolved murders of two cops--but she quickly realizes she may be the only one who can stop David, for once and for all.
I really like the character of Lauren Riley--she's a tough yet vulnerable cop who knows her stuff, and I've been following her since the beginning of this series. This book tied up some things, but left others hanging, and I have to admit, I hope there is a book four out there? I also have to say, to prove my devotion to Lauren, my ARC copy had issues with the "f"s in the book (e.g. Sheriff = Sheri; office = offce; files = les, etc.) and none of the text messages were in there, and I still read it, because I needed to know what was happening to Lauren. A final copy will be fine--just pointing out how much I care about these characters!
We have a small cast here, but do get some new blood, mainly in the form of the task force gents. Two, of course, suspect Lauren for the cop killings that happened in the second novel, but one, Jack Nolan, seems to be a good guy. Poor Lauren, she can't catch a break. I would mention that this book will make more sense if you've read the first two. Redmond explains things, but the backstory is easier to comprehend (and those first two books are good). Still, don't let that scare you away from this one.
These cases are personal for Lauren, and I found some of this book stressful, as I care about her and Reese, and I was worried about them both! If you're less invested, you may not be as concerned. No matter what, it's an interesting book--we think we know our suspect (David), but we're never quite sure, and there's a lot of angst and intrigue in trying to track him down. I always enjoy how the city of Buffalo is almost another character in these books, and it's very clear that Redmond knows her police procedures.
"She'd been waging a one-person war against him, and she was losing. She had to take this further before anyone else got hurt."
Overall, I definitely recommend this one, especially if you've read the earlier books, enjoy a good police procedural, or are on the hunt for a strong female protagonist. Redmond's stories are always interesting and sure to suck you in. 4 stars.
I received a copy of this novel from Midnight Ink and Netgalley in return for an unbiased review.
Holy cannoli – WHAT AN ENDING.. Each book in this series has been exceptional but this was definitely the crème de la crème.
Murder, tasks forces, main characters lives in danger, revelations, and one heck of a showdown made this one exciting book. These cliffy's are killing me but each book is so worth the read.
This is how it's done. Sitting on Lauren Riley's shoulder as she goes about searching for a sadistic killer. A well written, fast paced police procedural. Lauren's life sure isn't easy. Her work life her home life and her personal are a mess. Where is her sanctuary? That is one tough woman. Even with all that i enjoyed my time in Lauren Riley's world.

Thank you to net galley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book it was a wild ride with this book
Lauren Riley and her partner Shane Reese have been through a lot in this series - but they remain committed to finding murderers as they work cold cases. Her life is sort of a mess; she has two grown daughters, an ex-husband who is an attorney she keeps running into, a side business as an investigator, she was (literally) stabbed in the back by a colleague, and most of all, she's been unable to prove David Spencer, a real creep is a murderer. Now though there might be a chance. The corpse of a young woman who went missing months before is found in the same spot as another victim - so is there a serial killer? Lauren is certain she'll finally be able to get Spencer but she runs into conflicts with the, you know, law. There's some twists, some drama, and a cliff hanger of an ending. I read the first book but not the middle one and I was fine with this because Redmond provides back story. These are great characters. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Thank you Netgalley and Midnight Ink for sharing the next installment of this series. Ms. Redmond has another winner here in book 3 of her Buffalo detective Lauren Riley series. I was fortunate to receive the 2nd book through Netgalley and liked it so much I immediately bought the first. I recommend reading them in order to fully understand the histories of the characters. Overall, I highly recommend this title and the series and hope there are more to come.
A story that starts very slow and because i haven't read the other two books in the series, i felt like missing something but so big. I was intrigued because i always look for different and unique mysteries to be solved and this story did hold my attention after the first quarter more because as i said, it starts slow but when it picks up, it's just don't stop! Crime after crime, the guilty person is trying to cover his traces but the detective Lauren won't give up so easy in finding the culprit. It's a mystery crime story, a Cold Case episode even (which i love) with so many turns and twists that will keep you wanting more and more. The ending was brilliant but i still have questions that i feel like weren't answered but hopefully, there will be another book in the series.
A Means to an End (Cold Case Investigation #3) by Lissa Marie Redmond
September 2019 fiction, suspense, book series Midnight Ink Rating: 4/5
I received this digital arc from NetGalley and Midnight Ink in exchange for an unbiased review.
I was excited to read this new installation of the series since I was able to preview the first two books!
I wouldn’t recommend reading these books as a “stand alone” in order to fully understand the cast of characters and their relevance.
The murder isn’t over until the killer stops deriving pleasure from the crime.
Lauren Riley is a cold case detective working with her partner Shane Reese. Divorced with two adult daughters, she takes on cases as a private investigator on the side. She has a complicated relationship with her ex-husband Mark who is an accomplished attorney.
In the first book, she agrees to take on a PI case for attorney Frank Violanti, with whom she has been adversaries on many cases. She is annoyed to discover that Joe Wheeler, a former fiancé, is involved with this high profile case. Lauren ends up seeking assistance from unlikely sources to assist her investigation. Ultimately, she is left frustrated and dissatisfied with the results of acquittal in the Katherine Vine murder trial.
Next, a year later, Lauren is stabbed in the back while working late at the Precinct. Her partner Shane Reese had just left the office and returned to retrieve his baseball hat when he finds her bloody body on the floor. It seems pretty obvious that the crime was an “inside job” since the cold case files were kept in a secure location.
Why would anyone want to steal the Cold Case Murder Book? It seems there is a “mole” leaking information regarding investigations. Being a victim doesn’t stop Lauren from investigating her own case. She won’t stop until the person is apprehended unfortunately cases aren’t as cut and dry as Lauren would like. This book ends with another question mark regarding the involvement of a former client who was acquitted in his murder trial. Why does he continue to taunt Lauren? What is his end game?
In this latest installation to the Cold Case series, it is 4 months later on a cold March day in New York when Lauren and Shane arrive at a crime scene. Apparently, two hunters found the gruesome corpse of a woman in two pieces. It seems that Brianna McIntyre, a 22 year old, went missing last May after telling friends she was meeting a man she met online in a coffee shop. Manny Perez, the state police senior investigator, had consulted Lauren and Shane since he noted that Amber Anderson’s body was found in the same spot 2 years ago and murder case remains unsolved. There are no coincidences when it comes to crime and they fear they have a serial killer on the loose. Unfortunately, Lauren is certain she knows who is responsible and will do anything to see justice finally served.
Although this book ties up all the loose ends from the prior books, the characters are well developed and I could easily see this evolving into other books.
Redmond has written a great new story about Lauren and her partner in the Cold Case department. Picking up where the previous book ended, we follow Lauren's re-engagement with her police work and continuing healing from the stabbing that almost took her life. Obsessed with catching her old menace, David Spencer, Lauren skates very close to a line that could destroy her working relationship with her partner, as she participates in a special task force that could be the break she's been waiting for, a way to finally convict Spencer, but it also endangers those to whom she is closest. There a jaw-dropping ending scene, and I am anxious to read the next book in the series.
Having read book two of the series, I was excited with the opportunity to spend more time with cold case detective Lauren Riley. Still recovering from a stabbing, she is confronted by a new murder too similar to one from her past that still haunts her. In her workman-like way, Lauren fights to bring justice despite obstacles that make her job more difficult.
The novel opened up at a crime scene about 60 miles from Buffalo. The basic structure of the novel was established in the first chapter. The crime scene belonged to Chautauqua County Sheriff Office. They were supported by the New York State Police, the Garden Valley Police because the body may be a missing person from their jurisdiction, and the Buffalo Police because the ID found near the body was of a woman missing from their jurisdiction. Let’s say that the atmosphere was not collegial between some of the agencies present. Later the Buffalo Police Cold Case Detective Lauren Riley suggested the formation of a task force to investigate the cases. The agreement is for only one person from each jurisdiction to be on the Task Force. The State Attorney General person would oversee the Task Force. This split Riley from her partner Reese. The main storyline grew from this beginning.
One of the major themes in this novel was conflict and strong feelings. Reese grew more distant with Riley. Riley strongly believed that the murder of the present victim was David Spencer who left a previous victim in this same exact spot. Unfortunately through her efforts Spencer was not convicted for that murder. The Garden Valley Police representative wanted to investigate Riley and Reese for the unsolved murder of a Garden Valley detective who was Riley’s ex-husband. Riley and Reese were investigated initially for that murder in the previous novel in this series. You might feel now that you must read the first two novels before reading this novel. I do recommend reading them first, but it is not necessary. The background is explained that I believe is adequate for understanding the actions in this novel.
This novel did capture my imagination. The mixing of the twists, turns, and misdirections within environment of conflict did make an interesting and engaging novel. This is one of my major criteria for high star ratings. This novel did not capture my imagination to the level of novels that a rate with five stars.
As for the aspects that may be objectionable for some, there were about two dozen f-bombs and about four times of the use of lesser vulgar language. They were all in character or context appropriate for the situations. There were not any graphic sex scenes either. This language did not pose a problem for me, and I believe that for most readers this should not be a problem.
All of the threads and storylines were tied up at the end except one. This was left as a teaser for the next book in the series. I call these endings after a season finale of Dallas TV series that I call who shot JR. I normally drop at least one star rating when this type of ending is used. This ending did not bother me here because a follow-on novel clearly was expected by the end. The other aspect a little troubling for me was that Riley’s behavior was not in character as the end of the novel approached.
Based upon the above I rate this novel with four stars. I did enjoy reading it and do recommend reading it. I am looking forward to reading the next novel.
I have received a free kindle version of this novel through NetGalley from Midnight Ink with a request for an honest, unbiased review. I wish to thank Midnight Ink for the opportunity to read this novel early.
Another great story by Lissa Marie Redmond. I enjoy Lauren and Reese as characters. Their partnership and friendship are believable. Lauren helped to get David Spencer out of a murder charge. Now she has realized the mistake she has made. In tracking down David she is not only jeopardizing her own life but the lives of others close to her. Will her obsession with David ever end.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Lauren Riley is back on the job after suffering from an attack from a fellow officer.
As she and her partner Reese been called to a site where a young woman was murdered and dump and Lauren believes it the work of David Spencer.
When Lauren suggest to form a task force to investigate these murders she will have to work with someone new who isn't her partner Reese and it driving a wedge between tbem as Reese distant himself from her as she works with her new partner Jack she start to be at odd with everyone because she is determine to believe that David is connect to these murders because she still feel guilty for helping setting him free.
I like the character of Lauren she been through hell and back and she not afraid to step out to get justice serve she reminds me of Lily Rush and Olivia Benson characters on this tv show Cold Case and Law & Order Suv.
It had some great twist and turns as the play catch and mouse with David and the ending was good that it leaves you wanting the next book.
I received a free copy of this book from netgalley for an honest review.
I felt this book was well written and did a good job of building the story. I haven't read the prequals but this didn't hinder the story for me. There was a good overview of past issues explained throughout.
The thing I struggled with was the fact that the guilty party was always known and there wasn't a twist which I'm used to in these sort of books. I expected to get to the end and find that Reece had killed the others because if his love for Riley but maybe that's just because of the books I'm used to reading.
There was good suspense at the end and a good ending which leaves people wanting to read on about what happened next.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have not read the previous two in the series but that didn't hinder my enjoyment this book. I really enjoyed this and found it really held my interest throughout I will be getting hold of the other books in the series.
A MEANS TO AN END by Lissa Marie Redmond The Third Cold Case Investigations Mystery
Cold Case Homicide Detective Lauren Riley has been through a lot. Recovering from a stab wound, her obsession with David Spencer, the man she unwittingly helped beat a murder charge, is going into overdrive. When another missing woman's body is found, Lauren is positive David is the killer. Several agencies come together to work the crime, but as positive Lauren is that David is to blame, several other officers think she's not only deranged, but guilty. With a new woman gone missing Detective Riley will pull out all the stops to finally stop Spencer, no matter the cost.
The third Cold Case Investigations Mystery continues to show the gritty world of police detection in Buffalo, New York. The dark wintry atmosphere of a never thawing Spring in Buffalo emphasizes the desperate nature of the characters here. Detective Riley has changed, not only mentally, but physically. No longer the attractive woman, her cases have been draining the life out of her, literally as well as figuratively. Forced to fight for her own good name as well as to prevent more deaths Lauren Riley will go to any end, by whatever means necessary. While her shining armour and bright idealism had long been tarnished by the reality of decades of real police work, she's now entered the no man's land.
In A MEANS TO AN END all of the loose pieces from the first two books in the Cold Case Investigations series are tied up as Detective Riley finally finds vindication. The final scene between Lauren and David is a culmination of their fascination, attraction, and mutual obsession. Their lives entwined in such a way so as to ultimately lead to their destruction.
A MEANS TO AN END is a heart pounding journey into the dark side of human nature. Stark realism is captured as one women is forced to decide to what lengths she'll go to to find justice.
FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me an e-copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.
This series isn't like most with respect to being able to read each book standalone. Instead, it continues the story which began in book one, namely the aftermath of the acquittal of David Spencer and the obsession catching him that has plagued Lauren ever since her part in this. So, with this in mind, please do start from book one and read in order. Also, like the other books in the series, the story does not fully end here...! So in this, her third outing, Lauren has just returned to work after recovering from the stabbing at the hands of one of her own in the last book. Still troubled about what has been happening, her world is once again blow apart when the body of a young woman is discovered in an all too familiar place, sending shudders up her spine once again. Pleading her case to her bosses, she finally manages to persuade them to set up a task force to investigate. But will it be a case of be careful what you wish for as she still faces battles with those supposedly on her side? This latest instalment had all the elements I need to make a good book a great read. Yes, to be honest, I am not the biggest fan of unresolved stuff left dangling at the end of a book but this series is good enough to put all that aside for the moment and just sit back and enjoy the ride. Enough concludes to make this a good episode in its own right but it's obvious that there's more still to come. And I'm really looking forward to finding out what! It's fast paced and the story gets on with itself very nicely without any superfluous padding or waffle. There is enough description to colour the action without distracting from what is going on. Returning characters develop nicely throughout and the new ones fit in well. All in all, another winner which I have no hesitation in recommending to fans of the genre. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Cold Case Detective Lauren Riley is back doing what she does best, investigating murders. A woman has been murdered and her body dumped in a wooded area, an area where a previous victim was once found. Lauren has survived being stabbed by a fellow officer and now will not rest until she gets justice for the victim and hopefully before there are more victims. She has a mission that she cannot fail…proving that David Spencer was guilty of murder and has continued to kill. She unwittingly helped to acquit him of the first murder and now she won’t give up until he is in jail or dead. An exciting follow-up to the second book in the series “The Murder Book”. Ms. Redmond’s writing style is crisp and moves the reader along eagerly waiting for the final explosive ending. Lauren is a slightly flawed character who knows she was scammed by the murderer once and has no plans to allow him to get away again. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Retired Buffalo homicide detective Lissa Marie Redmond continues her engaging Cold Case series with an exciting entry that advances all of the plot lines.
Cold case detective Lauren Riley has almost recovered from being stabbed by another policeman. But she's still doing physical therapy and recovering mentally.
And she is still troubled by her belief the man she helped get off of a murder charge in the first book of the series is a serial killer -- as much as she hates that phrase.
Now a missing woman's body has been found in the same remote location the body of her suspect's girl friend was found previously.
And as determined as Riley is that she knows who did it, other police officers think she might just be obsessed and out to get an innocent man.
It's a great entry in this regional mystery series set in Buffalo. (The suspect even lives in Clarence?) The first book coincided with our move here, so it's been a bit of a comfort to have a local author/local setting cranking out quality books regularly. I can't wait to find book four waiting for me at the library later this year.
Love this author’s way with words. The story flows very smoothly as the plot unfurls.
I should say that this is the third book in a trilogy that features Cold case detective Lauren Riley. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the first two books and this book cake to me in a round about way. The author was scheduled to speak at a local book club and a friend lent me this book.
As Lauren Riley becomes part of a cold case team, she is deeply convinced that their chief suspect should be a man who has already had a few brushes with law enforcement. The trick for detective Riley is how to catch a killer who is fiendishly clever and, at the same time, charismatic. The author liberally sprinkled the story with landmarks and icons unique to Buffalo, New York which makes the story that much more enjoyable.
I can’t say more without giving away the end. Looking now to see when the author’s next book will be available. 😉
Oh Lauren, you really don’t do anything the easy way and overall I’m glad you don’t. She’s pretty much had it up to here and wants a conclusion to this little nightmare she’s found herself in over. I love the relationship developing between her and her partner. The procedural parts of the mystery are very appropriate. I adore her daughters. We get just enough of them to know why she loves them so much but not too much. The characters good, bad and peculiar are all very entertaining. I’m glad she has a gal pal and the pooch. Life would be too bleak without them. The conclusion worked and was a long time coming.
Okay before I even begin to tell you what I thought about A Means to an End by Lissa Marie Redmond I am going to go on record and say that there should be TWO disclaimers listed in the beginning of the book. The first should state that the reader should be forewarned when reading this book that when they get to just past the middle of the book, you will NOT want to stop reading until you get to the end. And then they should also state to the reader that when they get to the very last page in this book, they will feel A LOT of emotions and need to be left alone for a short time after closing the book to get their emotions in check before going on with their regular lifestyle. A Means to an End is the third book in her Cold Case Investigation Mystery series and, boy, does Redmond know how to capture the readers attention immediately and keep a strong hold on you until the very end.....and even then, the reader is left wanting more !! And that is especially true with this third book because of the way Redmond ends the story.... Lauren Riley is obsessed with David Spencer, who she helped get away with murder !! She didn't intend to and didn't know what she was thinking when this all happened way back in the first book in this series, A Cold Day in Hell. And her obsession boils over in A Means to an End and she will do whatever it takes to put him in jail where he belongs. Unfortunately Lauren sees red when it comes to David Spencer and no matter what her partner Reese and everyone else says and does, she feels she has to do this alone !! I would tell you more about Lauren and what happens in this story but I do not want to give ANYHING away and I feel like I might if I keep typing !! I really cannot say enough to encourage you to read this book. I honestly think that if you are a fan of this series or this author, it is a given that you will read it. However if you aren't a fan of either you will be once you read one of these books. You will have to read all of them and like me, Redmond will be on your list of authors to following and books to read. I cannot wait to see what happens with Lauren in the fourth book........
A Means to an End is one of the Cold Case Investigations series by Lisa Marie Redmond. The series follows the investigations of the Cold Case Squad in the Buffalo PD, namely Lauren Riley and her partner Shane Reese.
Lauren has returned to work following being injured on the job. Her assailant was a fellow police officer. She has her sights set on David Spencer as the offender in a number of murders, after she and Reese have been called to yet another young woman found murdered and dumped. The numbers are stacking up and the evidence, speaks to Lauren of Spencer’s guilt but is not swaying many of her colleagues. Lauren is already beating herself up after having played a role in Spencer being acquitted of a previous crime as a result of her relentless PI work, a side-hustle she has now abandoned. She knows Spencer’s is good for this and intends to pursued any lead relentlessly.
Lauren is at odds with a number of her colleagues who are assigned to a newly formed Taskforce to investigate the murders/disappearances. So much so that a couple of her colleagues have her in the frame for murder.
Who can Lauren trust? Reese, and what about her new partner on the Taskforce Jack Nolan? Is Lauren fixated on the wrong man? Will Spencer get the better of them all?
I didn’t know this book was part of a series when I began reading it. There are two previous instalments A Cold Day in Hell and The Murder Book. There is enough information to allow the reader to put it all together without negatively impacting the reading experience, The reader still gets a great handle on Lauren as a character. She’s likeable, brave and ballsy professionally, and has no regard for her own personal or professional safety. She’s somewhat irreverent and an absolute emotional mess as far as her personal life goes.
Reese and Nolan provide strong supporting roles and are both great characters future story lines might be developed around. There is a good balance between the detective-work on the one hand and the personal aspect for most of this book. I’m not really sure about the possibility of a romance appearing in the next instalment and I’m not sure it’s really necessary but I will definitely be reading with interest to see what happens with Lauren Riley and the Cold Case Squad.
Thank you Lisa Marie Redmond, Midnight Ink and Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I rate this 4.5 /5 and recommend this as a must read for people who love crime and courtroom dramas and thrillers.
This is due for publication 8 September 2019.
Review to appear on goodreads and also on my page Instagram @aplace_inthesun
“She didn’t want the sex, not really. What she had desired most was just to be close to him. To feel something other than numb or mad or frustrated. She had failed miserably in her attempt. She wasn’t the hotshot twenty-something young detective anymore. She was a middle-aged woman with bags under her eyes and saggy pants, who should have been focusing on her victim and not on herself.”*
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cold case investigator Lauren Riley can’t stop her obsession with David Spencer, the young serial killer she helped set free by poking holes in the case against him. Now, more women are dead, and she’s been implicated in the murders of two police officers she suspects he killed. She is assigned to a special task force investigating the murders, which drives a wedge between her and her partner. She becomes attracted to a man in the team, while others believe she is guilty of killing the officers. Meanwhile, the stakes rise in her cat and mouse game with David. Another woman is abducted. She’s determined to save David’s latest victim and make him pay for his crimes-even if it kills her.
Lauren is a tough woman. Her ex-husband used her as a punching bag. In THE MURDER BOOK, she was stabbed and left for dead. At work, she’s something of a pariah. Yet she keeps driving forward to right the wrong of David Spencer’s acquittal. While she’s a fantastic detective, she isn’t afraid to step outside the boundaries of the law to see justice served.
A MEANS TO AN END explores Lauren’s relationships with her coworkers and friends, particularly her relationship with partner Reece, who ticks both boxes. She’s aware of the consequences of her actions. In fact, she’s still dealing with the ramifications of going rogue in THE MURDER BOOK.
Lauren makes for a great lead in that she’s strong, yet flawed. Her relationships are complicated. Her passion is a force. She isn’t always a likeable character, but she’s someone who commands attention and respect. Someone who is driven by a deep-seeded belief system. This third installment of the series has the potential to uproot Lauren’s life and threatens all she holds dear including her sense of identity. I can’t wait to see what is in store for her next.
Thanks to NetGalley and Midnight Ink for the opportunity to experience this book in advance of its release.
*Please note that my review is based on uncorrected text.
After thoroughly enjoying "The Murder Book" by Lissa Marie Redmond, I was very happy to receive this third book in the Cold Case Investigations series.
In "A Means to an End," Detective Riley is set on making sure that the person that she holds responsible for multiple murders from the previous books gets put away for it. In general, we know who the 'bad guy' is throughout the book and have very little reason to think otherwise, so the book is not a mystery the way that the second book was. I read the second book in the series without having read the first one and still liked it. I enjoyed the third book because I had the background from the second book. You could probably figure out the story without having read the first two, but I recommend reading the first books (or at least the second one!) before going into this one.
More than anything else, I enjoyed the character development of Lauren Riley from the previous book and into this one. She is not always a likeable (or relate able) character, but I have never outright disliked her or hated her for her choices (I think it's always hard to enjoy a book when the main character is awful). I felt that the supporting cast was a bit bland at times- hence, the four star review. Yet, I am very happy with this installment to the Cold Case Investigations. It was a quick read and I would recommend it to others who are interested in the genre.
Thank you Netgalley and Midnight Ink for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was so happy to be given another Lissa Marie Redmond book for review! :) :)
As the third installment in the Cold Investigations series, A Means to An End opens with Detective Lauren Riley and her partner, Shane Reese, called to a wooded crime scene. The body of a young woman has been found in the same location as a victim of one of Lauren’s most haunting cases. She becomes, by her own admission, obsessed with finding the killer who she suspects is a man she once helped set free.
Initially, I was drawn to this series due to a familiarity with the setting, Buffalo, NY, which also hooked me on the series. Plenty of local color in this entry to peak my interest including a visit to Lily Dale, most known as a center of the Spiritualist culture.
I highly recommend this series, and particularly A Means to AN End, to those looking for a crime novel featuring a dogged, somewhat rogue cop and her partner with just enough detail without being overly graphic. Plus there’s a touch of romance and family connections to complement the twists and surprises that kept me turning pages. The dynamics between Lauren and Shane play a key role in this series and take a big turn in this installment.
FYI - even though this series can be read out of order it works best, in my opinion, in order.
Note: I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This is the third book in the Cold Case series; this could easily be read as a stand-alone book, but I feel that anyone reading this book would read the first two books because they are great. Detective Lauren Riley and her partner Shane Reese are hunting a killer, a man who Lauren is quickly becoming obsessed with. Her obsession is seen by others on the force and they think she has blinders on and cannot see past her own theory, but she feels it kin her bones that she is right. This book was a slow burn at first, enough to keep you reading and interested but then all of a sudden, boom, you are hooked. There were revelations in this book that surprised Lauren more than it will the reader. Lauren gets a task force assigned but then she goes off on her own when peril gets much to close to those around her and the ending, well, what can I say about that, other than, hurry up with the next book in this series!
Great book, great series, looking dforward to the next one!
Thank you Lissa Marie Redmond, Midnight Ink and Net Galley for a chance to review this book.
The series is growing in strength with Lauren Riley's Cold Case Investigation. I have now read all 3 books in the series and surely the author has provided some exceptional writing. The story begins with the discovery of a body where different police forces are involved. A task force is formed with a single member from each jurisdiction. It's not necessary to read the books in order coz enough background data is provided so that the reader doesnt miss much but I think to understand the dynamics of Lauren's single minded obsession of David Spencer it's best to read them in order. All 3 books ends with a cliffhanger that makes me look forward to the next in the series but am not sure if I will be the sole voice here in that I wanted the friendly and warm relationship between Riley and Reese to continue.
