'Other than the woman’s blood-covered body splayed facedown in the grass, it could have been any typical upscale Floridian backyard.'
And so begins Margot Hunt's latest novel, The Last Affair. I mean, come on...could there be a more enticing, macabre first sentence? Although I own two other Hunt books, this was the first I've actually read, and let me tell you, I was in it, friends. This book was my worst kind of addiction. I didn't want to stop reading. I can't resist a good domestic suspense, and something about Hunt's writing was so utterly absorbing.
All three points of view, those of Nora, Gwen, and Abby, were intriguing. I particularly enjoyed Gwen because she was just so damn diabolical. It's not often I find characters I simply love to hate.
So why my 3 star rating?
Three reasons:
1. The killer was beyond obvious. Like, so obvious it's almost insulting to the reader.
2. The entire conclusion--the timeline was wonky; the reasons behind the killing didn't work; and the epilogue was just silly.
3. This book brought absolutely nothing new to the table.
Final thoughts: Despite a few issues, this was a fun, easy read...perfect for the beach.
