From Dav Pilkey, creator of the #1 New York Times bestselling Dog Man and Captain Underpants series, comes Dragon, the heartwarming hero adored by Dav's youngest readers! Pick a book. Grow a Reader!
This series is part of Scholastic's early reader line, Acorn, aimed at children who are learning to read. With easy-to-read text, a short-story format, plenty of humor, and full-color artwork on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and fluency. Acorn books plant a love of reading and help readers grow!
Dragon is very responsible, but sometimes he makes mistakes. When he's tired, he accidentally reads an egg and fries his morning newspaper! When he sweeps his dirt floor, he can't seem to sweep away all of the dirt and ends up sweeping a hole into the center of his living room! And when Dragon goes grocery shopping, he buys more food than he can fit into his car! Using his trademark humor and heart, Dav Pilkey illustrates the fun side of chores and responsibility.
This Acorn edition contains brand-new bonus content, including how-to-draw pages!
David "Dav" Pilkey (b. March 4, 1966), is a popular children's author and artist. Pilkey is best known as the author and illustrator of the Captain Underpants book series. He lives near Seattle, Washington with his wife, Sayuri.
Fun little books this series is. My favourite episode was when the dragon opened a door to... Oh wait... was it really a door? :D I liked the author's tutorial for how to draw a dragon! Also I didn't know that proffecional artists can use usual watercolors, not some fancy paints, for a book that supposed to be published! Makes me to perk up, and I bet knowing this confirmed fact inspires any child to continue to draw or starting to draw :)
My four year old grandson asked me to read him this book about a dragon who is not too smart and keeps getting into trouble. It was a cute book with good illustrations and my grandson was clearly familiar with it and able to help with the story.
Because Dragon is so tired, he doesn't complete any of the household chores correctly. He also waters his bed and combs his teeth. What are the food groups these days? Take a visit to: http://www.mypyramid.gov/ Compare the approved groups to what Dragon holds to be true. dairy group = cheese curls bread group = doughnuts fruits and vegetables group = catsup meat group = pork rinds chocolate group = fudge pops
This is a funny story about Dragon, who has a bad day. Nothing seems to go right and our girls laughed out loud at the crazy things he does. We've really enjoyed the books in the Dragon series by Dav Pilkey and look forward to reading more of his books.
Hilarious. I loved Dragon's shopping trip for the 5 basic food groups: cheese curls from the dairy group; doughnuts from the bread group; catsup from the fruits and vegetables group; pork rinds from the meat group; and fudge pops from the chocolate group. A dragon after my own heart!
Third in the series. This time Dragon has a series of mishaps as he doesn't pay attention. Elementary readers will love the silly humor and fun illustrations.
This was one of my favorite childhood books, so I loved being able to reread it. Dragon is simply trying to go about his day, but sometimes he can’t quite think straight. He is such a precious character, remaining blissfully clueless. The cartoon-like illustrations really add to the comedic circumstances that make up his everyday life and reflect his bubbly yet chaotic personality. Starting off with Dragon himself, he is blue; typically, blue is associated with “disobedience” (Moebius 259). Disobedient would not really be a descriptor of Dragon’s personality, but it seems throughout the book he disobeys conventional rules of society. This definitely is not a negative quality as it does not harm him or anyone else, it’s just what adds to his harmless and gentle personality. There is also always color present throughout the story. His surroundings are always rich and brightly colored, indicating exhilaration, and there is always some sort of pattern (Moebius 259). It is interesting to see the placement of the pattern, or what type of pattern it is. The sky typically has spirals, dots, or stars. The use of various patterns and different shapes mirrors Dragon’s thoughts, whether it be confusion or happiness. The spiral pattern usually appears when he is thinking, or when he is confused about something (happily vacuuming his grass lawn, for example). Dragon is such a sweet and precious character and shows readers that they can do anything they set their minds to, even if it does not seem conventional. This would appeal to kindergarten to 2nd grade and is sure to make them laugh.
I found 2 of the Dav Pilkey "Dragon" tales at my local thrift store last weekend and couldn't wait to share these with my class. I was unaware of these titles and was delighted that none of my first graders knew about them as well. Dav Pilkey's Dog Man titles are VERY popular with younger children at the moment so I always love sharing an author's other lesser known work with children to try and help promote the "exploration of an artist" trait I do myself (and have always done as a enthusiastic reader). Both of these titles were very enjoyable. The illustrations are cute and Dragon is a very likable character. I'm ashamed of myself for not checking out Mr. Pilkey's other work.
Also, I love that these are "chapter books". Many first graders have the assumption that all chapter books are picture-less novels. It was nice to point out to the students when it was time to read a new chapter and make predictions on what they thought would happen in the following chapter. Speaking of students, they enjoyed both of these titles very much.
What a contrast to Captain Underpants! Miss 3 loves C. Undies so I thought I'd try some of Dave Pilkey's other works. His Dragon books have come as a pleasant surprise. A very different tone, morals are more about kindness and helpfulness, and Miss 3 has enjoyed them.
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Dragon does a lot of silly things in this book, like making his own breakfast (frying a newspaper, reading an egg), sweeping the floor that creates a huge pile of dust, and shopping for food. It's a hilarious story that children will enjoy one of Dav Pilkey's adorable picture book characters. After you finish this book (and the entire Dragon series), I recommend Dog Man and Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot by the same author, which both of these book series has illustrations, easy-to-read sentences, and trademark Flip-O-Ramas.
I know Dav Pilkey is more well known for his other books, but these deserve more love (only 1,000 ratings? Seriously?). These books are so sweet and funny and perfect for your 4 year old dragon loving kiddo. Also, it is a good book for a mom who might be looking for a book that levels up from picture books into chapter books, but still contains plenty of illustrations. Chapters are short and good for a quick story before bedtime.
"First, he read an egg and fried the morning newspaper."
Dragon wakes up groggy and does everything wrong, including opening a closet door instead of a front door, thinking it is dark out already, and going back to bed. He accidentally makes a basement for his home. I definitely agree that there should be a chocolate food group! My daughter laughed a lot at this. Silly humor.
A book that wouldn't be boring to read with an early reader child. Actually made me chuckle.
I have to admit, when he made the mistake of sweeping the dirt off of his dirt floor, I loved his response: "Looks like I've made a basement." If only we could all look at mistakes as opportunities.
My 5 year old kids thought that the book was good, but nothing magical. We haven't seen the TV show that this is based on, so that may be part of it. My kids are in kindergarten and I thought that this book was aimed at kids slightly younger than this.
A cute story that I read a couple of times to my toddler. I think it went over her head initially but after the first read, she loved it and would try to read it to me. Her favorite part was when Dragon ate all his food and couldn't fit into his car.
This is my second graders' favorite series. They are accessible to even my lowest readers, engaging for higher readers, have endearing pictures, a wonderful message, and so much humor. Highly recommend! I just wish there were more than 5 books in this series!
This is a tale of the many mishaps of dragon. However, he doesn’t let that get to him and continues to enjoy his day. This provides a great learning tool that mistakes happen, but it’s okay we’ll pivot and figure it out. Also dragons, who doesn’t love dragons.
