The Pack #1

The Pack

Rate this book
Jess Carter only wants to finish out her senior year of high school. No friends, no boyfriends, and definitely not an insanely hot, overprotective guy who might possibly be her mate. No thanks. She only came to the tiny town of Banks, Idaho to make sure her dad doesn't do anything too crazy. Like buy the local motel where you pay by the hour.

Dangerous stalkers and a group of students known as the Pack are the opposite of what she plans on, but that doesn’t change the fact that she has zero intentions of getting involved.

At all.
Period.
End of story.

Except, the stalkers are after her, the insanely hot guy is one of the high school coaches, and the Pack….well, let’s just say the name suits them.

With nowhere else to turn, Jess must rely on the Pack to protect her, but in doing so, she becomes caught up in a brewing war over territory and power. One that may cost her everything.

Mild language. No cliffhanger. HEA guaranteed.
A paranormal, shifter romance.

Despite the naked man on the cover, this is very much a YA story taking place in high school. Yet another lesson learned to actually READ the blurb.

I soldiered through it! Not bad, very basic, simple story of shifters in a small town. This was like twilight, but with only werewolves.

The author had to know that if she wanted to write a book about werewolves she not just could, but she would overpass the average. The message is just there starring at you through the entire book: “I am confident and I am relaxed, I will not force this story down your throat”. I am not complaining about its boldness, I am praising it. This was the best book about werewolves that I’ve read this year, so far; with a strong lead female character, an engaging plot, few but defined secondary characters and not a too annoying male interest.

I was a little bit reticent in starting The Pack because of its description in which it's let on that Jess will have a crush on her coach. I am not a big fan for a student-professor love relationship. It’s just a little disturbing for me. But the rest of the description sounded so good that I just had to give it a chance. So I started reading the first page and just in the first paragraphs I found three new words (three!!) so I wondered; Who is this author and what’s this book about that has a better and a higher vocabulary than a lot of pretentious books that recommend themselves as being for a proficiency level?

Things that it would have helped to know in the beginning of the book:
• The coach is not really a coach. He is not there for the teaching (I know that doesn’t seem to make sense, but I can’t describe it without revealing details, important ones)
• The new town is not that small ( it’s big enough to have a college)
• Moving at a new high school in you senior year may seem hazardous but it’s not the end of the world

Jess
The smell of exhaust fumes hit me as I stepped off the Greyhound bus and into my new life. The driver didn’t even bother getting off since my luggage consisted of the duffel bag slung over my shoulder. I hadn’t taken two steps before he was bumping back over the shoulder and onto the road.
Guess Banks, Idaho wasn’t a hotspot for travelers.
I considered my options, which were exactly nil, and let out a sigh. I was literally standing on the side of the highway with no phone - thanks again, Mommy Dearest – and no real idea of what to do next.

I liked Jess. For the first times in a werewolves novel she is not jumping at a chance to figure out what’s happening. She doesn’t keep to her bench, either, but at least she is honest with herself. Honest enough to recognize that she wants to know some things about her new colleagues, just to satisfy her curiosity not more than that.
She came on foot to meet her dad in a motel in a small town out of nowhere. Her parents had recently divorced and her mother’s tantrums had reached the rim of the glass for Jess, so she had decided to take the next ride to go live with her dad. She arrived in this town, she enrolled in the high school and she stumbled upon coach Dom who more or less plowed her in his way of questioning. ‘Who is she’ ‘Why is she here’ “She doesn’t go to this high school”. She evaded this questionnaire, but then in the cafeteria she couldn’t help but observe this group called ‘The Pack” gathered together at the table in the middle of the room.
The new school is a tad weird but the real blow comes from her father that told her, when she got back home, that he had just bought the motel and he wanted to invest in it.
“Well, Bunny,” he started and I interrupted, “Dad, no”, already suspecting what he was about to say.
“I only used a little of your college fund: he said in a rush, like that made it easier somehow.”

Her father is like slime. Malleable. A bit lenient, a bit ignorant to his surroundings, so much so that she feels that is her duty to watch over him. That part seemed so real and authentic that it chilled me. I like it. That is a part of reality, a kernel of truth that in the real world parents put themselves before their children from time to time. Her dream was to go to the Brown University and does money had to cover her tuition, but not anymore.
I love that she doesn’t fall in a pool of tears contemplating how hard her life is. She goes on.

But the real ‘plot mover’ is the occurrence that in a day, when walking alone towards home, two boys in a car chased her. She escaped, barely, with the help of Dominic, but they continued to be a nuisance in the days that followed. They harassed her, trying to catch her because, apparently she was special.

The narrative just flows. There is this part where Dominic is in his wolf form, Jess knows that it’s him, she pats him on the head and tells him this (remember, she was supposed to know nothing of the Pack’s world but she proves that she is perceiving);
I squeezed him tighter. “I know it’s dangerous. Foolish.” He snorted and I smiled into his inky black fur. “But there’s this guy. He’s younger, has sandy blonde hair,” I was interrupted by a growl and giggled. “Let me finish,” I admonished, squeezing a little harder than necessary. “He’s great, but he has this guy who would lay down his life for him. This guy who is a little grumpy,” another growl interrupted me so I added, “Okay, a lot grumpy. But he’s honorable. Honest. Kinda of good-looking. And massive. Oh my god is he huge.” A shaking chuff met my words and I grinned. “He’s looking for a mate. Not that he said as much but I can read between the lines.” Those golden eyes swung to mine and I stroked the soft fur of his cheekbone. “He’s all low key, but I feel it too.” He stared at me unblinkingly and then his tongue curled out and swiped my chin.
I sat there for a second, stunned, and then shouted, “You licked me!”

She is smart. She doesn’t drag. She isn’t purposely foolish. She has common sense. It’s a breath of air, really to read something that is not forced and cramped into a form. This book is interesting, dynamic and a quick read.

It deserves your time.

It's odd that for a YA book that doesn't have any sexual content in it and stays purified to only a light kiss, that the cover would have a nude man standing there. Sure they are shifters but geez! :) Overall it's a good story, and I have to say it needs another book - the author in the afterword mentioned she wasn't sure if she should make it a series or not, but she totally should. It didn't feel complete. The frustration would be since this is YA we won't see much steam when their relationship advances. I liked the "pack members" and for once they weren't ultra powerful and were underdogs of a sort. The ending helped that though and I'm curious about what happens with the women. The dad was fun at times but he got on my last nerve until the last 10%, in which he won major brownie points again. At least a sequel we could explore more with him finding his way in the pack as assistance now that he knows the truth, right? Pacing was a bit slow, which hurt the rating a bit since not a lot actually happened for the page content, but it was still hard to put down. Full review to come.

I don't read a lot of NA books as I often don't identify with the characters anymore. But this one sucked me right in. I'm going to write this review for all three books as they are all connected.
Yes there are mild cliffhangers between the first 2. Just enough to keep you interested in how things work out.
It's low angst. Good shifters, bad shifters and the humans caught in the middle. Secrecy and surprise developments. Although plagued by the usual plot holes you get in Shifter stories, the author has put a lot of thought into her world building which kept the story interesting. I won't say it's a complex story but it was thoroughly enjoyable fluff. (Perhaps a bit more than fluff?)
The last book pulls all the various elements together in unexpected ways. It was a little more violent than I expected but not to the point it bothered me.

And the epilogue 5 years later was a nice way to wrap it all up. Although I wish it had mentioned what Jess ended up doing after high school...

Jess was a fun character. One smart cookie with no TSTL moments, at least not any that weren't believable. She decides to move away from her mom to live with her father for her last year of high school. He moved to a small town in the middle of Idaho to start a new life after the divorce. When Jess gets to town she finds that things are rather odd about some of her classmates.
She becomes the catalyst of change.
I wish Dom's character had been a bit more fleshed out but he made for a pretty sexy H.

I can see why the story gets compared to Twilight, but I didn't think it was any more remarkable a similarity than half a dozen other books I've read about the paranormal in high schools. *shrug*

I listened to the audiobooks and Beth Roeg does a fine job reading. Paul Brion reads the few chapters from Dom's POV, but he's a little lack luster, even though his voice is nice.

**I’m leaving the entire series as a 3 ⭐, but this is for the genre… a teeny/YA PNR. I only read for content. (possible buddy read with my nieces- the cover threw me off) Basically, this isn’t anything I’d read on my own (I’d probably 2 star it) , so FYI… if we tend to like the same things. The blurb says no cliffy, but the couple’s storyline follows the first 3-books (Dom’s POV from book 1 is the 4th) and can’t be read as a standalone. **

Despite the sexy cover, IMO, this series falls squarely within the YA PNR lane. The first three books are told from the h’s POV and she acts very much the teenager she is. This isn’t a grown-up feeling series.

The book follows Jess, a HS senior as she moves to a new town to spend time with her father where she soon infiltrates the “hot kids” group that doesn’t socialize with the other students… referred to as the pack. (very Twilighty) Jess finds herself smitten with the older (I think only a few years) broody PE teacher/football coach/ fellow pack groupie, Dominic.

The” feel” is very HS. The h is immature-ish acting, (not so much childish, rather green with life/overly dramatic) and there’s a lot going on with her classmates. The relationship between Dom and Jess doesn’t go beyond kissing, but there is a rapey theme throughout as the rival pack wants to kidnap Jess to rape/impregnate her. There’re a few abuse/roughing her up scenes while the baddies try to get her to their lair. (hitting, slapping, lots of threatening, etc.)

Bottom Line- This is a tough one to label because the whole forcing breeding females to mate the bad guys (kidnapping/imprisonment, there’s even one female that they killed two of her non shifting babies) is a theme that carries on through the later books which could be too much for younger YA readers, but the characters aren’t super mature (she lives with her dad, friends are having relationship problems, teen angst, etc.) which might be off-putting to older YA readers. As an adult, I needed more juicy meat on the bone. Regardless it’s free to read with KU, so you can try for yourself.

The story was very well written and had an extremely unique story line that I have never encountered before.
I was hooked from the beginning to end.
This is definitely a YA romance though, for me personally it would have been 5* had it not been YA. But that is just my humble opinion.....
I would love to see what happens to the other characters too, especially Anna and Caleb.
There was intrigue, suspense, and a whole lot promising to be sexy times that would have been awesome.
Jess and Dominic were definitely an great match. I have to say I absolutely loved how Jess’s Dad took everything in stride in the end and d*am the way he actually stood up to her Mom was freaking AWESOME, even though I really wanted Dominic to bite her!!
If your looking for a really good quick YA Shifter Romance then this is definitely the book for you....

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Overall, this was a sweet, light read. Derivative? Definitely. It was like Twilight 2.0 with werewolves instead of vamps, and blessedly without the love triangle. But I enjoyed it for the most part.

What I did not like was the willful ignorance of the MC, Jess. She took 'ostrich burying its head in the sand' to a whole new level. I ask you....do any of these MC's ever read paranormal or fantasy novels? Or watch movies? Or hell, just be aware of pop culture? Let's take stock of what happened that Jess witnessed:
1) guy is eerily attracted to her and her to him
2) he kissed her neck and now she can feel it still, and if she touches the spot, he knows
3) their group is referred to as "The Pack" by other students
4) wolves are howling and fighting outside her window
5) guys have been chasing her and stalking her who mentioned "bitch in heat" and raping her
6) they talk about their respective lands and how they don't trespass and a potential war
7) wolves are following her
8) they seem to be able to communicate or learn about things faster than even text msgs explain
9) AND HE TURNED INTO A GIANT FUGGIN' WOLF IN FRONT OF THE TWIT after she was attacked by a man and a rabid-seeming wolf that somehow coordinated with one another
And somehow she is still denying that they are werewolves? REALLY? /facepalm

Once she got over that though and finally acknowledged what was happening, it was fine. (As it was early on before everything smacked her in the face.)

Not the best read ever, but was a nice, light change-of-pace. I hope the author does decide to make this a series though. Because as a stand-alone, it is quite dissatisfying. Too many threads left unresolved, and the romance only partially settled. Definitely YA.

Won't go so far as to recommend it, unless I see more from the author in developing this story.

UPDATE PROGRESS NOTES:
84.0% "Okay, here's what I don't understand... If only mates can have children, and mating can only be done intentionally, with both parties wanting it, having sex, and biting one another (again, with intent)... then how can the Hadleys kidnap and force breeding females to give birth? I wouldn't think rape/passing breeders around would do anything to produce children. There is an inconsistency issue here."

60.0% "Uh...where the hell did she get the gun? I know they discussed it, but there was no mention of him giving her one." (was resolved a bit later, but was still abrupt and weird because she shouldn't have had that easy access)

55.0% "OMFG...you are still trying to deny this? You watched him turn into a wolf RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, you twit! This chick takes avoidance to a whole 'nother level. Self-delusion."

46.0% "GAH.. TSTL secret keeper extraordinaire here :("

44.0% "Ridiculous MC. Intentionally and knowingly burying her head in the sand, not wanting to learn who is stalking her and why. Refusing common sense protective/preventative measures to ensure her safety. Making stupid decisions left, right, and center. *sigh* What on earth is with all the "I don't want any connections"? As though making friends when you will be somewhere for a year is going to prevent your plans."

38.0% "Uh...what? It took them five minutes to make a 10 second phone call and then walk from the motel room to the manager's office? Okaaaay."

4.0% "OMG...the Twilight parallels here are almost too much!
Forks WA > Banks ID
Leaving Mom to move in with Dad for senior year of HS
"The Pack" all live together and are avoided by all the other students
Strange attraction/affiliation with said ostracized group
And I got all that in the first 12 pages. LOL"

In the first chapter, I felt like I was reading Twilight.

Jess, the Fmc is petty and starky, I love her! She actually got me out loud, giggling. What i don't like is her keeping her head buried in the sand. Girl...... you they are werewolves. Cmon, join the party.  I still enjoyed the mystery and suspense.

Oh ... boy... this had some dark themes. I was shocked, especially at the ending with a rival pack. The rival pack made me physically ill. Yuck.....

Anyway her father is so unserious and so funny.

The book doesn't focus on the taboo relationship, that sometimes I forget she's in high school and he's a gym teacher. Also, this isn't spicy at all. Book cover made me think this was a spicy why choose romance, but hey, I was still pleasantly surprised. It has an engrossing story, so I didn't miss the intimate moments. Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of sexual tensions

I'm curious if the series will stay light or go darker.

This read more like a fanfiction, with several elements pretty similar to a certain teen vampire story. Things kept happening and the characters just went on with their days without too much discussion or emotion. How is Jess okay with her dad using most of her college fund to buy a random motel? How does any decent parent let their child be treated like crap by the other parent? Why aren't people more freaked out when they learn about the supernatural things going on?

Either way, this was not my favorite and I won't be reading more.

Loved loved loved this shifter book! I mean, I’m not really picky when it comes to shifter books but this one is in my top five for sure!

Jess is extremely independent, due to the fact that her mother is a conniving, deceitful, manipulating homewrecker who also happens to be a gold digger. So when her mom chose the selfish route and left for greener pastures, Jess stepped up and took it upon her self to look after her heartbroken father and precocious little brother. And the family is pretty close in this YA. I love when the family plays a prominant role in the MC’s life. It shows a level of thoroughness that I appreciate so much. She has mad family support in this book. So it’s consistent with her character to not take crap from the male MC’s when they try to give her shit and /or make decisions for her. I really love how she isn’t lost in the story, but chooses to instead not know everything, even when its offered to her. I mean, she does figure shit out but she is only involved as much as absolutley possible. And it works in this book so well. I didn’t get frustrated with her not wanting to know everything.

I thnk a lot of that is due to the shifters in this book. They aren’t your typical alpha possessive asshole’s. Well, there are ‘good’ shifter’s and ‘bad’ shifter’s. The ‘good’ ones are pretty decent. They go to school, have friends and homework and they aren’t mean to humans for no reason. They are pretty regular honestly. Now in this shifter family, there isn’t a lot of family introduced. It’s basically the teenagers show. Which isn’t as odd as it sounds. Shifters generally keep to themselves and its not unusual for them to deal with some issues without involving elders. They do make appearances but they are not as involved as Jess’ family.

I loved the plot of this story, it was easy to follow, yet had enough depth and obstacles to keep my interest. And there was some intense ‘moments’ sprinkled in that was unexpected and appreciated. The whole concept of the mating situation in this book was cool and different. I flew through this novel, and then I flew through the next one. And I can’t wait till the third one!

The cover is misleading. This is a sweet and clean YA book so I am not sure why the cover shows a nude man.
Besides that... I really enjoy werewolf/shifter romances and this one is great. The characters were brought to life and the world of shifters was believable and place I didnt want to leave.
I hope there is more coming for Dom and Jess and the werewolves. I just couldn't get enough of them!!

So I read like the first couple lines of the summary and a couple reviews and didn’t really know what to expect here but had high hopes.
Basically Jess leaves her cunt of a mothers house to go live with her dad who moved to some tiny town far away after literally letting a dart in a map choose his location after their divorce.
He ends up buying the run down motel they’re staying in and spends basically her entire college fun renovating it.
Jess at first is pissed, the college fund was the only thing backing her life long dreams at attending Brown. After living in Banks for a bit and making friends she starts to sing a different tune and isn’t hating the place so much, especially when she keeps running into the towns most eligible bachelor, and the schools gym teacher Dom.

Things I liked:
I really liked Jess and her take no shit attitude. Her mom was a total twat and she doesn’t cave to her.
She also isn’t a total idiot, while she does put herself into not great situations a few times I can understand the why. Especially when she doesn’t actually know what the danger is.
I liked the slow burn between she and Dom as well, their relationship is pretty cool.
As is the relationship with her dad, he brings in a lot of humor.
Side characters are also good and have their own little romance blossoming.

Things I didn’t like:
There is no sex here, and there really should’ve been a few times. The intimate moments honestly felt seriously lacking especially the bathroom/bedroom scene.
I don’t remember ever actually finding out how old Dom is so the “forbidden student/teacher” aspect fell REAL flat. His character didn’t seem older or forbidden at all but more like your classmates older brother that still lives at home and considering they’re seniors it’s not a big deal. Even though we learn later he had already gone to college and come back so he’s at least 25?

So really my biggest complaint is lack of sexual activity. After reading a few reviews of the next books I’m worried it continues in which case I will not be. It’s a good story, not great, maybe cause I was hoping for something more “adult” and yes I know one half the main character is supposed to be a hs student. But the rest are wolf shifters soooo....

Verrrry YA and wholesome… which would have been perfect if I was 20 years younger. Very mild with a little bit of excitement. Not enough to get me to read through the rest of the series.

My review will probably not be a good representation of the book, fair warning. Because this book tricked me. This was a sheep in wolf's clothing. No, I didn't get the saying wrong. This was a book with a provocative cover, categorized as romance. Romance with a half naked man implies something that this book didn't deliver. This was a YA book. Plain and simple.

There is nothing wrong with YA. But I just don't enjoy them like I used to and I tend to avoid them. So to find a book that looks like this in the category that I shop in, kind of just ticked me off. I should have known when the MC was in high school. But I got this on a list for taboo, teacher/student romance. Ugh puh-leez. This was so tame, he was barely older than her and all they did was kiss and that was in about the last 90% of the book.

If I went into this knowing it was a YA book, I would say it was a great book. There was good suspense, everything wasn't revealed all at once, it kept a good pace. I stayed interested wanting to know what was going to happen next. It was a good story. And that's why it gets 3 stars from me. even though I wouldn't have purchased it had I known how tame it was. Actually I used a credit!

Which brings me to my next topic. The narrator for this audiobook, was good...sometimes. She didn't have an annoying voice, and some of her voices were good. But I didn't care for her voice for the H. And sometimes I thought she said things in an acty way. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but it sounded like a high school play sometimes, instead of sounding like adults talking to each other. So it makes me wonder if I would have liked this book better if I had read it, and not spent an audible credit on it.

Totally recommend this book!!!! Eeekkkkssss!!!! Lol It’s like a cousin of Twilight!!!!! Shapeshifters woot woot!! Can I just say I want to find my own Dominic 🤪🤣😍 Has some pulse racing moment without being risqué!!! Be considered a New Adult/Young Adult genre! Loved the writing— immediately captured my attention & escaped into this world! Mark of a great book/author when it pulls you in right from the beginning true escapism!!!! So many great characters the chemistry between our leading duo is off the charts!!!! The dialogue/suspense—can tell it’s just the first book in series it sets up the overall arch! Definitely be reading more in this series & from the author!! Would recommend this novel!!!!

Every now and then I'm in the mood for a book about shifters. Unfortunately, there are not that many good books out there. This one, sadly enough, belongs to the much bigger group of bad shifter books.
First off, I cannot get over the fact that nobody seems to be bothered by a so-called "romance" between a teacher and a student. I don't care if Jess is 18. She's a student. He's a teacher. It's a gross abuse of authority.
Other than that this was the typical YA superficial nonsense that has been sprouting out of every nook and cranny since Twilight. The characters are two-dimensional Mary Sues and Gary Stews. THere's no real plot other than poor innocent Jess needing rescue. There's no world building. This book is just a whole lot of BLAH and MEH.

This is a quick, cute read. I can understand why people compared this to Twilight but with wolves. I don't really see the comparison, except they are both teenage girls who moved to a small town with secrets.

Jess, the main female MC was being ignorant on purpose and I loved that about her. She wasn't a stupid teenage girl, she knew it was something going on with Dom and "the pack" , but she was trying to keep her distance.

I enjoyed this more than I thought and I am extremely curious to see where the series is going.

This certainly feels like a Twilight spin off, however I still enjoyed it. I liked the world the author has established, and find it interesting how the mate bonding works.

I liked the connection between Jess and Dominic, strnage as it might be. What I didn't like about Jess is how she WANTED to stay ignorant of what was going on around her. There were several times where she could have asked and gotten info but she willfully wanted to stay out of things and keep her head down, that got old, since as a reader I wanted to know all the things and Jess wasn't letting us.

The Pack

The mystery of the pack wasn't as mysterious as the author seems to think it was. I do have an issue with Dominic being a teacher because that blurs lines between students and teachers that should never be crossed. I like Anna and Brandon. Jes was not someone who I really like or could like. The whole breeding female concept was disgusting. I will read book 2 whenever it comes out, but there are better shifter romances out there. 2.65 stars

I have not read a good shifter story in a long time! A werewolf book that didn’t involve a harem. It was a sweet love story and I’m already into the 2nd book. There are some grammar issues and sentences missing so a few times it was hard to understand but moving to school I. The middle of nowhere and meeting the pack changed Jess’s life forever as she’s being hunted. The only one that can save hero’s the intimidating school coach whom she’s also drawn to. This book was super good check it out
