Robin Woods is a former high school and university instructor with two and a half decades of experience teaching English, literature, and writing. She earned a BA in English and an MA in Education.
In addition to teaching, Robin Woods has published six highly-rated novels, eight creative writing workbooks, and has multiple projects in the works.
When Ms. Woods isn’t teaching or writing, she is chasing her two kids around and spending time with her ever-patient husband.
Although this workbook does feature a couple of my poetic writings and Robin Woods and I go waaaay back, I can still offer a legit review. I write, yes, but I also teach, and this booklet, as well as all her other Prompt Me workbooks, are my go-to for bell work and creative writing sprints. This one is romantic in nature but packed with safe tween to teen content perfect for the classroom.
“A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.” -Richard Bach
These words of inspiration begin the newest in Robin Woods’s ‘Prompt Me’ series. ‘Prompt Me, Romance’ is laid out like her others in the series, giving all of us writers-to-be her signature creativity and enthusiasm.
My feelings remain the same about this version as they do her other ‘Prompt Me’ workbooks... __________________________________ Who better to help with getting your writing juices flowing than an English teacher AND published author?
Robin Woods, the talented writer behind the ‘Prompt Me’ series and ‘The Watcher’ series, brings all of us wanna-be writers another round of creative inspiration.
In ‘Prompt Me Again!’ Woods continues her masterful layout for different ways to get your fingers typing! Her take, “Prompts are meant to be inspirational, not shackles,” and “If one [...] doesn’t work for you, move on. If it doesn’t work [...] today, it might tomorrow.” immediately relaxes the reader into feeling confident in experimenting with their many ideas.
My favorite sections to use are Picture Prompts, Choose a Path, & Dialogue Prompts. I also enjoy the journal section - particularly for the sporadic ideas that pop up while using other parts of the book. And, finally, the reference section is a fount of guidance when you just can’t quite find that word or expression that you need.
I highly recommend this book for aspiring and seasoned writers alike. ________________________________
However, as this one focuses solely on Romance, there are many more bonuses highlighting specific information you’ll want/need for your own romantic tale, including: The Standard Romance Story Arc, Stages of Intimacy, and understanding Love Languages. And, again, the Reference Section is filled with words and phrases you’ll find particularly useful for a lover’s adventure: Barriers in Relationships, Words to Use in a Romance, and Tastes & Aromas.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I would LOVE to write a book for Hallmark’s Publishing company. (And maybe have it turn into a movie on the Hallmark Channel. ;) A girl can dream...) As this is not the normal genre in which I write, I found this workbook immensely helpful and inspiring.
Again, I highly recommend this book for aspiring and seasoned writers.
Prompt Me Romance has all the good pieces of the other Prompt Me books--killer prompts such as picture, dialogue, 1st person, 3rd person, choose your path, etc.--PLUS fun romance additions! From tips on those intimate scenes to love languages and flower symbolism, Robin Woods adds a lot of helpful resources for ANY writer, not just those for whom romance is their preferred genre. Practicing with these exercises and using these prompts will make the relationships in any story more authentic and well-rounded.
