I am a big fan of parenting books, blogs and podcast, and this book is up there as one of the most influential and meaningful that I’ve read so far. Whilst I’ve learnt so much from the likes of Dan Siegel and Janet Lansbury (and I adore their stuff), Sophie’s book was exactly what I needed as a mum with 2 kids under 2 who were not sleeping. I wanted desperately to stay connected with my kids, but had fallen into a black and white belief around sleep and care for babies and toddlers. For so long I felt so happy and thriving when I fed to sleep, coslept, and had them sleep in the sling. But as my 10 month old started having his daily sleep in the car and both boys waking consistently at night (and me starting to feel a disconnect from that), when I found Sophie’s book, it really did seem like the last piece of the puzzle. There can be so much connection, love and peace around bedtime that doesn’t include rocking them and feeding them (although there is a lot of connection with that as well, I had just reached a point where things were changing). I felt that any ‘training’ was wrong. However I would describe this book as training for parents more than anything. I learnt quite a bit about respect for my children, where I thought I was respecting them to my fullest already, I found that I had more space to listen to them and be with them in their feelings. For fans of Janet Lansbury, this book quite aligns with her short article about baby sleep and listening to our children’s needs. So I got a lot out of this book. But just as it is with any parenting advice, take what speaks to you and sits with you best. I have just found that I don’t have to be so black and white. And I still have plenty of opportunities to have both my boys in bed with me at times, but I have a clear expectation of them at bedtime (and they have expectations of me to play and listen to them at night- and I hope they will always know I will do those things for them). So I’m getting the best of both worlds and I feel that they are too.

I have 3 children under 5. Reading sleep play love actually put my mind at ease about the sleep patterns and regressions babies and children go through, and that in most cases it’s completely normal! I love that she breaks it down by ages because I forget with each child how much they sleep in the beginning haha. I have a 2 month old and thanks to Sleep play love he sleeps through the night! The book also gave me so much insight on transitioning my toddler into her own bed and making her room comfortable for her. My 5 year old also started kindergarten which has thrown everyone off but I changed naps slightly with the books help, and changed bed times. They all sleep 12 hrs every night! If you want to find a loving and kind approach to getting more sleep for everyone you must read!

One of the best parenting/sleep books out there!!! I have read a few and I hands down this one was the best. I had a toddler who wouldn’t sleep EVER and after reading this book and implementing some changes I learned from reading this book my daughter has been sleeping regularly through the night! Highly recommend

this book is absolutely amazing. The guidance is great, gentle and makes sense. Understanding a baby and child as a whole took me on a much kinder parenting path, For me and my girls. I would recommend this to every parent new or old! I only wish I’d read it before the birth of my first Bub.
