Rate this book
She thought they had the perfect marriage...
Tamra never dreamed she would marry someone like Mike Mitchell: handsome, rich, a wonderful husband... until she finds out that Mike is having an affair. But Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Mike Mitchell should have remembered that before he made a fool of her. Because Tamra knows something about Mike. Something he did. Something evil. And she was prepared to carry the secret to her grave. Not anymore.

To make matters worse, Mike’s daughter Madison has come to visit for a few days, and Madison doesn’t like Tamra. Well, that's too bad, because Tamra doesn’t have time to argue. She’s too busy ruining Mike’s life while remaining, on the surface at least, the perfect, loyal wife. But when Tamra's plan spirals out of control, she finds that things are not what they seem. And now, it's too late.

If you're gonna bring the lightning and thunder, you're gonna get hurt, too.

Tamra Mitchell meets up with her husband-to-be in an elevator, followed by a tryst in this fellow's fancy car in the parking lot. Bad decisions all the way around.

Mike Mitchell is a successful businessman who has been encouraged to run for governor in North Carolina. With second wife, Tamra, in tow, Mike attends dinner party after dinner party in his honor. Tamra hosts gatherings in their home for potential donors. Everything seems to be going according to plan until it isn't. Mike's daughter, Madison, arrives home unexpectantly from college. She and Tamra toss daggers across the room always hitting their target.

Tamra's suspicious nature has her checking Mike's pockets after he leaves for work. What she finds there will set this weather vane spinning. The room lights up from the sheer voltage emanating from within Tamra. She knows something deep and dark about Mike. Perhaps it's time to pull this sharp and thorny object out of her bag of tricks. But revenge can be a double-ended sword drawing blood from both sides.

The Loyal Wife could have been a powerhouse of a read. It had a lot going for it initially. Acting solely on impulse and fiery anger, Tamra barrels into situations without brain engaged. I think that's what was needed in this one......a bright, analytical woman who could lock intellects with any man and set traps like a bounty hunter in Alaska. Instead, we got Tamra who tilts to one side in her six-inch Louboutin heels. What she perceives as problem-solving skills only trip her up and pivot her towards people she should avoid like the plague.

Take this one out for a spin and see what you think. It's a fast read and fills the bill for a beach or poolside read. No heavy lifting here. Kinda weirdly good......

Well,

This was a strange and quick read. It would be best to call this a novella. I'm not sure how to present my review so I'm going to provide a list.

1. The main plot is fine, believable even, but much of the story is ridiculous.

2. The writing style is not very good and often not very realistic. It's like a high schooler wrote it.

3. The "news" articles were laughable. I have never seen a news article written that way. I can't imagine any editor allowing them into print.

4. Errors:
Below is a paragraph I copied.

"I cock my head at him. There’s a bit of perspiration on his top lip. I wonder if I’m making him nervous. “She’s been murdered, Frank. You honestly believe that it will go away?” That makes him wince, and I honestly can’t tell if it’s because I brought up her murder, or because I used the Lord’s son’s name in vain."

I'm sorry but I don't see the Lord's son's name. Do you?

5. The two rich women calling each other 'girlfriend' made me laugh out loud and then I just felt sorry for them.

6. The whole thing has a rushed feeling. There isn't much back story and what things you do learn is just thrown out in a ho hum manner. There is only one actual surprise, the who. By the time you get to it in the final 10 pages you basically really don't care.

7. The "epilogue" is just stupid. A nice tidy fairytale ending. So unrealistic that my eyes rolled far back into my head and I saw my brain.

8. There is absolutely nothing to connect you with the characters so it's impossible to guess who might be doing what and why.

I think that covers it. A soap opera episode would have been a better use of my time. I have no idea why this has high reviews but I should have listened to the low ones. I only read to the end because I gave up $3.99 for this, whatever you want to call it. If I could I'd get a refund. I can't see myself ever reading something from this author ever again. I have a list of authors to avoid. Now there's a new name on it.

(2.5) But I acknowledge my rating may not be fair.. Ive developed a huge pet peeve in books- I HATE when 1 thing happens & immediately the main character loses ALL faith or trust in somebody close to them. But I'm talking about this issue to the extreme.. An example (not from this book) would be that a wife gets a hang up call- so she immediately put trackers on her husbands phone & car because obviously he's having an affair (or maybe plotting to kill her!)😂 No matter that they've been married without incident for 28 years! You get the picture.. I understand that books are just stories & that the author has complete artistic license.. But it's just hard for me to swallow. So yes, besides this book being somewhat dry & predictable, the relationships between characters came off as completely unrealistic to me. Now if it wasn't for that issue? Still not for me. I just didn't feel connected to anyone & the story (in my opinion) was just kind of silly.

12/9/20 I'm rereading to see if I still hate this. I've since read all of Natalie's books and loved them so let's see......

------
I thought the first chapter or two were pretty interesting. The reader is grabbed right away by a certain plot point. But beyond that, it is clear this is a poorly written book. I don't say that lightly because I am NOT a good writer. Who am I to make that claim? But I think it's pretty clear this is bad writing.

Rushed writing, without much depth. Characters not fleshed out, and all intolerable and unlikable. Motives are extreme and unexplained. There needs to be real backstory and insight to Tamera's motives, proper storytelling. She does some crazy stuff but the hard work of crafting a story isn't present. Loose ends, weak characters, weak writing, a fast and forced ending. A wrap up so stupid my eyes almost exploded from rolling.

It was a fast read, but it was an elementary read. It is as if the author thought of 4 or 5 ideas and then just filled in the space around them with random words.

I've now read all seven Natalie Barelli's books, and they are perfect if you are looking for a short, fast-paced popcorn thriller. I especially love a revenge plot, and this book hooked me right away. Tamra was also one of my favorite types of characters: sarcastic, probably a sociopath, but also endearing in a strange way that I find myself rooting for them (not sure what that says about me lol). I do wish there had been a better editor though, as I had some issues with the dialogue and there were a few mistakes that bothered me. For example, Tamra is supposed to be 33 and Mike is 52, but later it is mentioned they're 17 years apart. Also, the book is set in Greensboro, NC, and Crabtree Valley Mall is referenced...but that is located here in Raleigh. Aside from those issues, it was a very fun read, and I am eagerly awaiting Barelli's next novel!

This was an intense read! Tamra was certainly the loyal wife, in her own demented delusional way. There were tons of twists, in fact I’m still spinning a bit. The ending was a whirlwind for sure. I definitely enjoyed it and the last half of the book flew by!

This was unfortunately really terrible. I have changed my rating system where I only give one star to books I DNF, but this one is tempting me to do it anyway. I guess I won't begrudge the second star because I didn't guess the ending - I thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong. I like being fooled.

But on the other hand, the writing was so poor and the characters all did and said things that bore no resemblance to actual human behavior, that I don't really blame myself for not guessing.

This could have been a really cracking book but while I enjoyed reading it, it was certainly not Barelli's best work. The saying "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" pretty much sums up the story.

Tamra comes from the wrong side of the tracks but managed to snag herself a very eligible husband, handsome and successful businessman Mike Mitchell. Mike also has political ambitions. A few years ago he had a fling with a co-worker and Tamra forgave him and helped him cover it up. But when she finds a pair of flimsy panties in one of his pockets she vows revenge. She's not going to forgive him this time. This all coincides with Mike's teenage daughter from his first marriage arriving unexpectedly, having a break from her mother. The girl, Madison, seems to really hate Tamra.

As the revenge plot progresses it gets a bit silly. Tamra does some things which leave you wondering where she parked her brain. There are quite a few twists and turns which keep the entertainment value high. There's also a fair bit of of 'things are not as they seem'. I think its a good beach read.

while i found the story to be engaging, i don't think i've read a book with such a stupid main character before. i mean, honestly, it was like this woman had absolutely no impulse control or the ability to consider cause and effect - she's already jumped into it headfirst. i enjoyed the book overall but i found myself thinking, "why are you so damn stupid, lady?" every other page.

Main character is whiny and frankly, an idiot. Entire conflict could have been easily and obviously avoided. Very repetitive writing. Earned stars for the twist ending, but the ending is not worth reading the whole book.

There are some pretty gaping plot holes in this book. None of the characters motivations and behaviours make any sense. Except for Frank, the corrupt man of god. I’d say the author pretty much nailed him.

I don’t know about you, but if I witnessed my husband run his lover over in the woods, my first instinct is not to bury the body and play happy families for the next 2 years. You can bet your arse, we are having a conversation about it, with and without the cops.

If Lauren is not having an affair with Mike, then why does she behave the way she does? Whispered conversations in the middle of the night, why does she agree to give her an alibi and then tell the truth to the police, knowing it means her friend will likely get arrested? Why does she run straight to Mike after their fight and then prevent Tamra from entering her own house? The whole thing reads like the author changed her mind at the last minute but didn’t bother to do any edits.

Mikes behaviour makes no sense. At all. If he’s innocent of everything but the affair, which his wife already knows about, why would he lie to the police about it when his wife is being questioned and potentially about to be arrested for murder? Why tell her to tell the truth, then lie to the cops? Why does he text her to come home, and call her friend because he’s worried after he’s just set her up to go to jail for murder?

Maddie. Do I believe this kid is clever enough to pull of this ridiculous scheme? Nope. Not even a little bit. 6 months for hit and run and then, boom, she’s totally reformed and going to med school. Sure. Can you get into med school with a criminal record? I’m not convinced.

Tamra gets 2 years in jail for burying a body but the person who actually killed her, blackmailed her family, attempted to murder her step mother by shooting her in the head in cold blood gets 6 months? Sounds legit.

And then, after all the really fucked up things they ALL did to each other, everything is forgiven, they’re all friends again and everybody lives happily ever after and go on the Ellen Show.

What. The. Fuck?

2 stars is a bit generous for this one
Somewhat disappointing as psychological thrillers go but would make a good lifetime movie.
My main problems with this book is the dialogue did not ring true, ie best friends do not talk to each other in such an awkward forced way. If you have nothing better to read this could entertain between books

3 Stars!

I'm super behind so this will be short.

This book is a great example of “ nothing is as it seems.’ The main character Tamra, is one crafty bitch BUT some of it backfired on her. I'm not a big fan of “falsly accused” plots and I really hated all the characters. The ending was NOT AT ALL what I expected, but in a good way.

Tamra was something else... not to say her husband wasn't. Heck, most of the characters were a piece of work. I kind of didn't like anyone in this book. I wouldn't have been shocked if any of them had "done it". It was an okay read/listen. I was hoping for a little more of something to pull me in. I will check out some of Natalie Barelli's other work and see how I like it.

I have to confess I skipped some pages here and there. I would have stopped reading, but soldiered through to see what happened. Tamra was really annoying, and the dialogue between her and Mike often didn’t make sense.

In which there is a couple where the husband asks his wife to pretty please help him drive his mistress to get an abortion. And it.....doesn't end badly.

Lol. I mean, yes, it eventually gets bad, but not for that reason. Which is CRAZY to me.

This is one of those where the twist is that it's not what you thought all along and in fact is something that's so ludicrous it hardly makes sense.

But I enjoyed the ridiculousness so id probably listen to more by this author.

Still. I wish I'd gotten a story about a wife exacting revenge on her philandering husband for taking her for granted one too many times after she's stuck by him through things even the church didn't envision when they came up with wedding vows.

Domestic Thrillers / Women's Psychological Fiction / Psychological Fiction

What will happen when The Perfect Wife will find lace panties in her husband's trouser pocket? Naturally she thinks he's having an affair, and she wants revenge. She also have to deal with her husband's hostile daughter from his first marriage who comes to visit them.

Started off okay but became disjointed quickly. I didn't enjoy the writing style nor that I was told, instead of shown. I want more depth and integrity in characters! I should have sympathized with Tamra but I found her reactions and actions annoying, immature, strange and stupid. Couldn't relate with her at all. Doubt she loved her husband. I think she was more interested in being Mrs Mike Mitchell and everything that came with that position.
Her husband and step-daughter were no better.
And after all the damage done, the redemption seemed a bit far-fetched and too neat in the end. It was okay but not very original or interesting.

For the past 6-years, Tamra has been the perfect trophy wife to her husband, Mike. She supports his political and career endeavors, keeps up with their social appearances and events, has sex with him on a regular basis and even tolerated her three wicked step children. What more could Mike ask for? But when Tamra discovers that Mike is having an affair, she feels a fool. How dare he do this to her, after all she’s done for him?

Tamra wants to leave Mike for disrespecting their marriage, but she soon realizes that everything is in Mike’s name: the house, the money, everything. And thanks to the prenup Tamra signed, she would get none of it. Without a college degree or any money to her name, Tamra would be put out on the streets. No, a divorce is not the answer to her problem. Instead, Tamra decides to seek revenge. For Tamra knows Mike’s deepest, most hidden secret and he’s soon going to find out just how bad of a mistake he’s made. Tamra could shatter his perfect life in an instant, but she doesn’t want him to be put out of his misery quickly. She wants him to suffer—for that’ll make him never forget that he cheated on the wrong wife…

The Loyal Wife by Natalie Barelli is a twisted domestic suspense that’ll have you rooting for the slightly insane, scorned wife. This book had a lot of potential—a wife seeking revenge on her cheating husband? Count me in! But that storyline only lasted the first third of the book and then I lost interest. The ending was rushed and wrapped up too perfectly for my liking. I wanted to like this more, but it was a letdown—2.5/5 stars.

Tamra never dreamed she would marry someone like Mike Mitchell: handsome, rich, a wonderful husband... until she finds out that Mike is having an affair.

You can imagine the ensuing events in this psychological thriller by Natalie Barelli. Or maybe you can't. After all, there are some twists and turns in this one, more than a few of which I did not see coming (surprising, I know). At the end of the day though, I have to knock it a bit because of the ending. I'm not going to spoil it, but in no way, shape, or form can you weave such a story and then give it the ending that you did Ms. Barelli. I just can't get behind it, as it was completely underwhelming in my opinion.

All things considered though, this was a very nice quick read, and the style with which Barelli writes had me breezing through one page after another, anxious to get through the next passage, the next page, the next chapter.

I'm wondering if I read the same book as all these other reviewers?
The writing was awful-- it was choppy and there was absolutley no depth to the story. I didn't like any of the characters; the shocking twist wasn't at all. Thankfully the book was short and free.

I love Natalie Barelli's writing style. She keeps me guessing! Just when I think I know what the ending will be ,the plot twist floors me!! I have read two books now And neither have been predictable. I highly recommend this author. This and The Housekeeper kept me up past bedtime to finish.
