First things first: the subtitle "a captivating guide" is really appropriate. This book is captivating and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Babylonian history.
I have read several books on Babylonian history recently, and this one was the best so far. It begins with a description of daily life in Babylon and then moves on to its history and the gods they worshiped.
The part about daily life and Babylonian history was very well written. Unfortunately, the part about Babylonian mythology came up a little short. You did get a brief glimpse into their pantheon, but that's about it. I would have liked to read more about their gods and their relationships to each other.

This is my absolute favorite type of history; this book covers the leaders as well as the clothes, foods, and gender roles of the ancient peoples of this Mesopotamian region. I love to hear as much about the people and their culture, gods, and mythology, as about their wars. I was flabbergasted to read how much the Greeks got from the Babylonians -- yet the Greeks get all the credit. It is staggering how much information is stuffed in these few pages. Bravo, Captivating History!
Readers get a feel of the Code of Hammurabi through the words and the image of the black stele (upon which it is written). After reading this, one realizes being a physician in Hammurabi's time was a precarious profession. According to Hammurabi's 282 laws, a miscreant's punishment was terrible, swift, and sure.
One observation that the author makes about the 'great flood to wipe out humanity' myth is that it occurs in almost every major religion across the globe, including Australian Aboriginies, Babylonians, Christians, Hindi, and many other indigenous tribes throughout both American continents. A particularly interesting section was about the Babylonians and the Bible. In all, this is a very satisfying explanation of the Babylonian Kingdom and culture.
This is great overview and brings together in summary fashion all the players/peoples & tribes of the Near East and how they interacted with Babylon. It is good too by listing the actual historical players/kings. It explains the close relationship between the priestly caste, military caste, & ruling caste. The translations from ancient texts are not good and disparate, better translations exist especially for the Creation Myths. It does a good job of pointing out the Jews are just one of many people who like others believe their God to be THE God.
So this book effectively gives a brief overview of the history of the Babylonian empire, but the reason I gave it two stars was because of it's strange uncharacteristic and often strangely structured writing style. It seemed a. It plain and boring in places and even a few writing mistakes. All in all it can be a nice general quick overview but there are definitely better books out there.
Very basic overview, but that is the point of the book. Diction is okay. Instead of presenting a timeline of Babylon it presents sections like "culture", "art", instead of progressing in timeline order. Okay but not great.
