Can’t believe it took me this long but wow what a book and what better time to read than now. It’s a first hand account of the Donbas War in 2014 and the only book written by an organizer of the rebellion.

52 men crossed from Russia and took Slavyansk without firing a single bullet and kickstarted this war. Ivan Strelkov/Girkin was the leader and started a Russian spring that he thought would unite all Russian speaking people after he took Crimea months previously. Thousands of everyday workers came to join the cause and became battle hardened troops but Russian support never came and once it did Girkin was kicked out.

It’s up there with the best I’ve ever read and is so detailed to the point it explains random soldiers call signs. Excellent writing and a primary source that explains why the Donbas is as bad as it is.
