From an Australian TV scriptwriter comes a sparkling debut novel where the quest for love will surprise you.
An insightful look into the world of reality television, in this debut novel from former scriptwriter Kaneana May. We follow the story of three women involved with the TV dating show 'The One', reluctant contestant Bonnie, ambitious producer Darcy, and sometime viewer Penelope.
All three women are in different stages of relationships, or non-relationships, Bonnie has fallen head-over-heels for her high school sweetheart Ollie, even though he has a fiancée, Darcy is trying to get long time boyfriend Drew to propose and Penelope has recently walked out on the love of her life. However as we know the course of true love is never smooth, and we relive the hope, the grief and the temptation with the girls. Will Bonnie get over Ollie and find love with Ty, the suitor on 'The One'? Will Darcy be able to pin Drew down to set a date? Will Penelope be able to come to terms with her decision?
As the season on the show goes on all does not go to plan, and as things spiral out of control for Bonnie, Darcy and Penelope, we find ourselves hoping for the best outcome for each of them. Will they find 'The One'?
I really did enjoy this book, the look behind the scenes of a reality television show was highly interesting, showcasing the intensity of feelings amongst the contestants and the pressure the producers are under in the chase for hard earned ratings. The novel came over as authentic and the characters realistic, we find ourselves rooting for them as the book goes on. So, do they find true love? You'll have to read it for yourselves!
I recommend this book to all lovers of Contemporary Fiction, Romance and Reality Television.
My thanks to Harper Collins Australia for an Uncorrected Proof to read and review. The opinions are entirely my own.
*https://theburgeoningbookshelf.blogsp... I will start by saying I’m a bit of a Bachelor tragic. I like getting right into the drama of the show and trying to guess who will be going home each night, checking Twitter every few minutes to see what other viewers are thinking, which contestants everyone likes or dislikes. We viewers have very distinct opinions about everything that is said and done on the show.
I originally rated the book 4.5 stars because, for me, there wasn’t enough viewer participation in the story. However over the next few weeks I kept talking about The One to anyone within earshot and especially while I was watching episodes of The Bachelor. Which made me think this is definitely 5 star worthy.
The One follows three women during the screening of a reality TV series where an eligible bachelor dates a number of carefully chosen women, eliminating one each episode until he is left with ‘the one’ he chooses to spend his life with. Darcy is a producer on the show, Bonnie a contestant and Penelope a viewer.
I loved all the behind the scenes producing of the show and all the drama between the contestants. It was exactly as I imagined it would be.
This is a cute and funny RomCom that highlights the ups and downs of love and the strain of long distance relationships and shows all we really want is our own happily ever after.
Kaneana May touches on topics of miscarriage, IVF and cancer with deep sensitivity. The three main characters were very relatable. Darcy hides behind her work rather than taking the time to re-evaluate her relationship with boyfriend Drew. Bonnie’s anxiety and self loathing cause her to run rather than stand up for herself. Penelope shuts herself off from people as she has already suffered too much pain and loss.
The One is a romantic novel that reminds us that love may be where you least expect it. A story that had me laughing out loud and surreptitiously trying to hide my tears as I read the last few pages in a busy coffee shop.
I am eagerly looking forward to seeing what Kaneana May comes up with next *I received an uncorrected ARC from the publisher
“The One” – reality TV which the viewing public devoured every season. But this year the predictable but exciting show would be much different. With the studio based in Sydney, the twenty two young women who had succeeded in their quest to be on the show headed there from all over Australia. Darcy and Mel were the people in the front line with the contestants, coaching them while the cameras were ready to roll. All the women were in lockdown in the hotel – no phones, nothing to connect them to the outside world.
Bonnie had arrived from Port Macquarie, shattered after learning the news from her ex. As she joined the other contestants, she wondered what she was doing. This really wasn’t her thing…
The on-camera dramas were suddenly overshadowed by a much bigger concern. What was going on? Why was it happening now; this year; this season? Could Darcy and Mel sort it out?
The One is the debut novel by Aussie author Kaneana May and it was filled with drama, angst, love, relationships and predictability. I’ve never been a fan of reality TV and reading about the artificial and staged show hasn’t created an urge to watch any I’m afraid. I have seen the high ratings for this book and feel that romance fans will enjoy The One – it just didn’t “do” it for me.
With thanks to HarperCollins AU for my uncorrected proof ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
First of all I have to admit that I am not a reality TV fan at all. I have never watched an episode of Married at First Sight or The Bachelor - ever! And this book is all about finding The One... on national TV... and I loved it! I was sucked right into this story right from the very beginning and read this book in a weekend binge. Once I started I just had to keep reading to see who got their happily ever after. It was a wonderful change from my usual serial killers and police procedurals. To top it all off it was set in Sydney and written by an Australian author. I can't recommend this book more - it made me laugh, it made me cringe, I cried and I was invested in the lives of these 3 women - what more can you want from a story.
The One tells the story of 3 very different women - Bonnie Yates, Darcy Reed and Penelope Baker. Told from alternate points of view we learn their stories, their hopes and dreams.
Bonnie just wants to be happy but she falls too hard and too fast for the wrong guys. When her ex-boyfriend from high school returns to town, fiancé in tow she needs to get away or risk falling under his spell again. Her sister has applied of Bonnies behalf to the dating reality show The One and nobody is more surprised when she is chosen to be on the show. When she gets there she feels a connection to the bachelor immediately, but struggles to get along with the other women in the house.
Darcy Reed is the career driven producer on The One - a show that is pretty much The Bachelor. She has been in the same job for 4 years and is desperate for a promotion and knows that she has to make this season of the show the best one yet. Her long time boyfriend moves back to her hometown to take up a teaching role, leaving her alone in Sydney doing the long distance thing. Can their relationship survive her job and the distance?
And lastly we have Penelope who takes longer to get to know. She has packed up her life and moved away to a small seaside town where nobody knows her and she can keep her secret to herself. She just wants to be left alone.
This is a wonderful Aussie book that reads like a TV show or movie - one that I would absolutely watch. These women are completely different but deep down all they want is love.
Thanks to Harlequin Australia HQ, Mira and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased..
I’ve met Kaneana May a few times at local library events, and I was excited to learn she had realised her dream to publish. Her debut, The One, is an engaging and emotional contemporary novel.
Using her experience in the television industry, May connects her characters by their participation in ‘The One’, a (fictional) reality television show in the style of the worldwide phenomenon, The Bachelor. To be honest, I abhor reality shows like The Bachelor/The Bachelorette, Married at First Sight, Love Island etc, so this aspect of the novel wasn’t particularly a draw for me, however I imagine fans of those shows will enjoy the idea of peeking behind the scenes of The One.
The One unfolds from multiple perspectives. Darcy is the ambitious producer who works long hours to ensure the success of the show, to the detriment of her decade long relationship with her high school sweetheart. Bonnie is a reluctant contestant, trying to put distance between herself and the man she believes to her ‘one’, who is about to marry someone else. Penelope is dealing with an unspecified heartbreak, of which ‘The One’ seems to be a painful reminder. And then there is Ty, the ‘bachelor’, a last minute replacement on the show, whose heart is not really in it.
Through her characters, May explores the the complexities of relationships. There is passion, anxiety, romance, regret, desire and heartbreak, as they all grapple with their questions about love. I had some empathy for Darcy and her situation, though honestly I would have preferred a different ‘ending’ for her. I was less sympathetic with regards to Bonnie and her relationship with Ollie.
Well written, combining drama, humour, pathos and romance, I really enjoyed The One, congratulations on a great debut Kaneana.
A visit to the set of E Street (one of my own favourite Aussie sitcoms) thanks to her cousin, provided author Kaneana May with an early appreciation for the television industry. May injects this lifelong passion for film and television production into her debut, The One. Kaneana May’s first novel was a highly entertaining read.
The One offers a behind the scenes insight into all levels of a reality show modelled on a similar format to The Bachelor. The One looks at the lives of three different women, who are all tied to the same television production. Bonnie never thought she would end up as a contestant on The One, but a series of wrong choices in the boyfriend department has resulted in an unconventional search for love. Will Bonnie find her happy ever after? While Darcy, a workaholic and producer on the set of The One has relationship issues due to the unrelenting hours on the show. Can Darcy salvage her relationship and ensure that The One is a hit with viewers? The final viewpoint of The One follows the life of Penelope, a woman who has left behind a trail of heartbreak and pain. To escape her private pain Penelope has thrown herself into The One. The show provides Penelope with some much needed solace. The One is a story that intertwines the lives of these three different women as they are engulfed by the power of The One.
The One surprised me. Kaneana May’s book proved that I shouldn’t be so quick to judge a book based on the genre category and cover design. I expected The One to be a standard chick lit and women’s contemporary fiction offering. However, this book goes much further, delivering a story that encompasses private pain, relationship dysfunction, disappointment, setbacks, work/life balance, IVF, miscarriage and terminal illness. There is also perfect side serving of mystery, as May works to gradually unfurl a series of life changing secrets withheld by her characters.
There are three female leads that direct the proceedings of The One. I liked how May chose to use differing points of view within the range of her reality television show format. Life through the eyes of a contestant, an on set producer and a follower of the series is presented. Each character was explored in detail and there was a sense of familiarity to this set. These women came across as authentic and almost ordinary at times, which was a good thing as I was able to make a connection to all three protagonists. May exposes their lives, warts and all, which I appreciated very much. The periphery cast also provide well timed moments of humour, conflict, contention and semblance.
With such roles as a script assistant and script writer to her name, Kaneana May has applied her industry knowledge to full effect in her first novel. Although I have to confess to avoiding reality television shows such as The Bachelor but I did appreciate the insightful glance of this industry May was able to apply to her novel. What interested me the most was what happened when the cameras stopped rolling. I enjoyed the mishaps, problems, high emotions and the overall politics of the show. There are moments of lighthearted comic relief and rushing elation, but there are also some crushing sequences. It was interesting to see how this all played out for the characters. I was surprised by the final fate of the protagonists that I followed in The One, it hit me a little harder than I expected. I was clearly more attached than I realised!
If you are looking for something a little different from the usual romance fare on offer in the contemporary fiction field, The One may be just what you are looking for. I’m keen to see what Kaneana May conjures up next!

The One is book #61 of the 2020 Australian Women Writers Challenge
Three women, three issues, all involving happiness.
Bonnie seems to have no luck in the love stakes, her ex has a new girlfriend and is shocked when her sister sends in an application on her behalf for a reality dating show. Darcy is a career girl and has been in a long-term relationship that seems to be going nowhere. She gets the opportunity of a lifetime to produce a new TV Show which will show everybody that she has what it takes to succeed. But at what cost? And does this city girl want to move to the country for the sake of love? Penny has just broken up with the love of her life but has a secret. Will this prevent her finding happiness in the future? Enter a reality show where an eligible bachelor is presented with an opportunity to find a new love of his life. Will they all find The One? I really enjoyed reading this novel. I became completely invested in all the characters within and I now will see reality television from a different point of view! The main characters were well crafted, and you couldn’t help but laugh out loud at some of the contestants who finish up on the tv show – the rivalries and competition for the affection of the man had me laughing out loud in parts!! Poor Bonnie, who really didn’t want to be on this show as she still had feelings for her ex. Darcy wanted to prove herself and be a top rating producer. Penny is in such a difficult position and doesn’t know where to turn. Their worlds come together and the outcomes… well, you will have to read the book to find out! Its hard to believe that this is a debut novel. The author’s writing flows beautifully with the stories of the three women, and it kept me turning the pages until the very end. She has used her experience as a screenwriter and knowledge of the television industry to craft a very entertaining novel. We have another talented new Australian author in our midst! Thank you to Harper Collins for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Bonnie is on the wrong side of 30 and just wants a happily ever after but keeps picking the wrong guys. When an ex returns to town and she can't shake her inappropriate feelings, she flees and becomes an unlikely contestant on dating show ' The One'. Darcy is a producer on the show and her own love-life with her long-term boyfriend is floundering. She wants a promotion but how can she save their relationship while producing flawless TV? Meanwhile Penelope has relocated to a small seaside town to hide away with her secrets and nurse a broken heart. But she can't seem to quite escape with 'The One' broadcasting everywhere...
This is the debut novel for this author and I think a lot of readers would enjoy it. When I read the synopsis it reminded a bit of an American TV show called UnReal that is a fictional look at behind the scenes of a show similar to The Bachelor, which is the same premise as 'The One'; except that TV show is quite nasty in parts whereas this book felt nicer and the producers in the book were still manipulative but not psycho like that TV show haha. We swap between the three lead female characters: Bonnie, Darcy and Penelope. All were fairly likeable in my opinion although I couldn't relate to them a lot in terms of their love life dramas. I have to say that I did find the storylines a tad predictable. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. I was looking for a lighter read and this one did fit that for me. If you are looking for a romance with a soap opera feel to it, then this is the book for you.
I am sooooo not a fan of reality TV - just the ads on TV for The Bachelor and the like make me roll my eyes and switch channels.
However, this debut novel by former screenwriter Kaneana May intrigued me, and it was wonderful to get behind the scenes (albeit fictionally) to see the machinations manipulations of a reality show.
I liked all three of our ladies - Penelope, Darcy and Bonnie. My heart hurts for each of them in different ways, and can see the strength behind their decisions.
I liked that I knew quite a few of the areas where this book is set, and could get a good visual in my mind as I was reading.
The road to finding true love is never smooth, and as each of our ladies is at different forks in the road when it comes to their paths. I loved how their stories intertwine - unknowingly- and how we see each of their thoughts and feelings as they story grows.
And the last 15% of this book - wow!
This was a wonderfully written story, and Ms May's screenwriting past shows in this.
I enjoyed this story, read it in one day, and I look forward to seeing what she brings us next.
I don’t watch reality TV or the Bachelor, I decided to read The One and see why everyone in Australia is talking about this book?
Darcy Reed’s the producer of The One, she works long hours, she’s under a lot of pressure and her boss is always giving her a hard time. Due to her being so busy, her relationship with her long term boyfriend Drew is on the rocks and she doesn’t have time to sort her own love life. Darcy wants a promotion, the current season of TV show needs to be a hit, have excellent ratings, and you can see why she has no time for poor Drew!
Bonnie Yates has a successful photography business, she assumes she has done badly in her interview for The One and she’s shocked when she discovers she been picked to be one of the twenty two contestants. Her first love Oliver James is back in town, it’s the perfect opportunity to get away from him and he’s a temptation she doesn’t need.
Penelope Barker arrives in the quiet seaside town, she’s a loner and has a secret. She keeps bumping into frazzled mum Lara, she has two young children and is keen to be friends with Penny. Ty Peterson is this season’s eligible bachelor, his fiancée broke of their engagement, he hopes to mend his broken heart, and he’s ready to settle down.
The One is a story full of drama, romance is complicated, and so is what happens off camera and behind the scenes. The three main characters are connected, it's about life and all the associated pressure. At work, in relationships, maintaining friendships, having children, not having children, society’s expectations, finding love, and sadly illness. I really enjoyed reading The One by Kaneana May, I can see what all the hype is about and five stars from me. https://karrenreadsbooks.blogspot.com/
Lights, camera, romance! Calling all fans of The Bachelor, I’ve found your next read. Whether you just watch for the melodrama, or you are a hopeless romantic at heart, this book needs go go on your TBR.
Set against the backdrop of a fictional reality TV show on which twenty-two unlucky-in-love women vie for the affections of the same man, The One is a witty and engaging contemporary romance novel. I loved the behind-the-scenes glimpse at how a show like The One is produced. As you’d expect, the contestants often find themselves in somewhat awkward situations, which made for plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.
The One is fabulous debut. It has endearing, credible characters, natural dialogue, and a great storyline... what more could you ask for?!
Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of this book from Harlequin Australia in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this book so much! I inhaled it in two days, because I just couldn’t stop reading. I was looking for a lighthearted romantic novel, which I got. What I also got though, was really clever storylines, complex characters, laugh out loud moments and heartbreakingly raw parts too. Plus, a behind-the-scenes look at reality TV which was even more addictive than watching it. A 5 ⭐️ read!
I haven’t watched much reality tv since big brother 2000, I was an addict!! So I wasn’t expecting to love the dating show insights like I have. I had no idea! So that part was great. I was expecting the love stories to be silly, I’m 41 and settled; but instead I loved them all!! I laughed, I cried, I connected with them all...I’m so glad I’ve found my one!!
I really enjoyed this book, and considering this was a debut novel, it was even more impressive.
It tells the tale of unlucky-in-love Bonnie, whose sister persuades her to go on a reality show to find a romantic partner. There is a young woman who is working on the show, Darcy, who is having her own issues and then there is Penny. All of these women's lives intersect in this book and how things pan out is very interesting indeed.
The behind-the-scenes look at how reality TV is produced is fascinating and considering this is an Australian author who mentions places I am familiar with, it is doubly interesting to me. The ending of the book felt a little bit rushed; I was getting so emotionally involved with the characters that I didn't want it to end!
4.5 stars from me - looking forward to reading another book by this author.
Copy kindly received via Harper Collins Australia in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately I had to DNF this one. It wasn't holding my attention at all. The story line seems like a good idea, and I am sure others will enjoy this, it just wasn't for me.
Another one that’s been sitting on my TBR forever. Honestly, the start was a bit confusing – it’s written in third person and jumps between three women, whose stories only later reveal how they’re connected. Basically a Bachelor rip-off with a twist. The second half flowed much better, and I enjoyed it a lot more than the slow, slightly messy beginning.
Australian viewers have become increasingly familiar with reality TV shows over the past few years. Shows such as Big Brother, The Bachelor, Love Island, Jersey Shore to name a few. I confess to being an lover of the earliest Bachelor series particularly - favourite couple ever #TristandRyan!
The debut novel of Kaneana May combines her own love for reality TV and her background as a scriptwriter on numerous Australian drama series. The result is The One set in New South Wales, Australia.
The One alternates three point of views:-
Bonnie from Port Macquarie is cajoled by her sister into going on The One, a bachelor-ish reality TV show where she is selected to be one of the women vying for Ty's affections. Bonnie has a complicated relationship with her ex who has just returned to town with his fiancee.
Darcy is a producer on The One who and is well versed in organising love for everyone's viewing pleasure. When it comes to her own relationship with her high-school sweetheart Darcy things are tending towards being beige and a number of things are not sitting comfortably with her. The more serious Drew gets about settling down and living in their (tiny) home town (Gloucester for all you Aussie peeps) the more Darcy struggles to imagine being content with this lot in life.
Penelope is a bit of an enigma. Not much is known about her except she is running from something or someone. We learn she has lost her mother and sibling in tragic circumstances but in the early stages of The One it's not immediately apparent how she fits. We only sense her discomfort at The One an we wonder?
The One follows each woman's journey and their stories slowly unfold. The characters in this book are so real and easy to imagine both in front of and behind the camera. This was a book that made me smile (ALOT) and has an ending that gives the slightest ache in your heart. No spoilers here!
Such a fun look at what really goes on ... or does it?
I was fortunate enough enough to meet Kaneana May at an author meet and greet last week. Such a friendly and open presentation about her own path to the completion of this work.
You don’t have to be a fan of reality tv to enjoy The One by Kaneana May. This debut novel is an engaging, witty, humorous and touching story about finding happiness and love. You can’t help but root for the three main characters as you eagerly turn the page to discover if they find their happily-ever-afters.
I enjoyed following the journeys of the highly relatable Bonnie, Darcy and Penelope and discovering how their stories are intertwined. They are very different women at different stages in their lives and I empathised with them in their efforts to juggle their career, relationships and life aspirations. I appreciated that all three women weren’t perfect (who is?!) and may not have always made the best decisions, which made them even more authentic. I also enjoyed the use of multiple character perspectives, which mirrored the sense of a change in scene on a tv show, the story flowed easily and this novel had me so entertained I binged through it the one sitting!
The drama and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the production of such a show like The One was a lot of fun and had me laughing out loud. I was also delighted to discover hidden depth to this novel despite the fun reality tv premise with an exploration of how messy life and love can be. For me, the ending of the book felt a little bit rushed, there was enough there to delve a little further, in particular with Darcy and Penelope’s storylines.
Overall, The One was such an enjoyable read and I recommend this novel to lovers of contemporary fiction and romance. I look forward to reading more from Kaneana May in future.
Thanks to Harlequin Australia and Netgalley for providing me with a copy for review.
This book surprised me. All the way along I was enjoying my read, without getting overly invested. I've been reading it most of May, 20 days, which is an unusually long time with me. The beauty of it though, is it was increasingly easy to pick up again and take up where it left off, and the further I read, the faster I read, if that makes sense, so that I read the last 30% last night and ended up in buckets of tears... It felt comfortably predictable, until it wasn't predictable at all. The ending (like, the very last pages) caught me on the hop and left me thinking about why characters do what they do well into the night. I've never watched The Batchelor, or The Batchelorette, but I will take a look at reality TV where the subject draws me. I loved SAS Australia and am a sucker for Ninja Warrior. Cooking shows? bleh. Anyhoo, I did find myself enjoying the character of Darcy as the producer of the reality show, and getting a look at what producers do in putting those packages together. Bonnie was good fun. Initially I found the Penelope storyline dragged, and I did guess the twist involving her, but right at the end it was Penelope's last pages that left me staggered. She was amazing, brave, and her partner so beautifully solid. Loved it.
A lovely read about three women, centred around a TV reality dating show called 'The One'. One lucky bachelor is hopeful to meet his match from the women selected for him. The book follows the story of Bonnie, a slightly reluctant contestant on the show; show producer Darcy, time-poor and always-hoping-for-that-promotion-which-is-dangled-over-her-head-to-make-her-work-harder; and Penelope, a woman of mystery struggling to stay aloof and anonymous when she moves into a small country community.
Apart from an amusing (and sometimes appalled) insight into reality television, this book is a deeper look at relationships, and how you can't invent love, or in fact turn off love when it strikes. And love may not exactly lead you to everlasting happiness.
Intrigued? This is a lovely read, both amusing and sad, as the reality show heads towards the inevitable final ceremony. Definitely worth curling up with.
Thanks to Harlequin Mira Australia and Beauty & Lace Book Club for the review copy.
Though Im no huge fan of reality TV I have found myself hooked into them from time to time. Like many others I guess 😊
When I had a chance to speak to Kaneana May at a recent festival I was intrigued by her debut novel The One, and bought her book for a long flight.
The One is a beautifully written story about relationships, the search for love and what people will do in the name of it. I love how the characters are real with flaws and conflicting emotions pulling them in different directions.
Though it is fiction it is interesting to read about what goes on behind the set of reality TV. All in the name of ratings/money.
I will certainly look out for more novels from this author. Congratulations Kaneana May on an awesome book.
This is for you Monni Bags! I feel like this book has an overall meh to it. I am not sure if I will really remember it or got that much out of it. It’s a light read and is relatively interesting but I was not left dying to pick it up again. I think by about chapter 5 you could probably determine where this book is heading. You know who will get together and that’s probably all anyone would care about. I was not too invested in any of their relationships though to care that much. It did get me in the feels with Penny telling Ty she was dying. I think I am just getting a bit emotional as I get older and will cry at the drop of a hat. It’s a 2 and a half from me. Nice easy read but really did not need to be 400 pages

This book had been in my TBR pile for a long time. I was going away for the weekend and needed something on my Kindle and something which was light-hearted. The last book I read made me so emotional I thought this would be a nice romance, smiles all around kind of book.... well - it was but it was also gut-wrenchingly emotional! I enjoyed it and it certainly went deeper than I expected. I am still feeling the emotions from finishing it this morning.
